Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

'I Got You' tops up the trailblazing, quickfire repertoire with a dust-caked window into the past, by way of well-crafted, surround-mixed breakbeats and a gritty gospel sample on the A. Review: 'Practice What You Preach' is a standout track from the German funk band Poets Of Rhythm's debut record of the same name, first released on Soulciety in 1993. After a long hiatus on the albums front before a return to the limelight with a follow-up Ninja Tune LP in 2001, these guys nonetheless remained surely active on the 7"s circuit, which has sustained them since then. Little did we know or predict, however, that there existed a part two to the same track, which is essentially an instrumental version of the original 1993 track. On the B comes a fresh funker formerly released under the alias Mighty Continentals, with the band's Bo Baral laying down a rare solo guitar situation and singing about, well, god knows what.

Review: Darvid Thor, Henry Jenkins and Hudson Whitlock (of the bands Karate Boogaloo and Surprise Chef) founded the low-key Frollen Music Library in 2021. Now aided in kind with a public release of their works by Spasibo Records, a heartwarming dialogue is facilitated between two isntitutions by way of a new four-track EP. Hand-picking four sweet treats from two earlier releases put out between 2021 and 2022 respectively - 'By The Phone (You Rang?)', 'Jaw Breaker' and 'Sei Cardigani Di Ball' all hailing from the former's Sweet Treats Vol. 1 compilation and the final track '1/4 Cup Of Sunflower Oil' from the following year's The Fretted Neck' album - these tracks are laid-back, nonchalant refractions of talent, across which the aforementioned cycle through said covers of Ennio Morricone, Pierro Piccioni and Piero Umilliani's standout score cuts with ease.

Review: As the Mad About label hurtles towards release number 100 it looks to the talents of Webster Lewis and The Spirit of Atlanta for two more fiery gems on a very useful 7". There are hints of Library music in the noodling melodies of the A-side jam 'El Bobo'. It has jazz-funk keys and organic drum rhythms gently tumbling below the Rhodes magic up top. The Spirit Of Atlanta's 'Freddie's Alive & Well' then picks up the pace with a more high-speed and 60s-influenced jazz-funk sound featuring some buttery smooth vocals up top. Review: Spasibo Records present a fresh 7" by the Vicious Seeds, hailing from St. Petersburg. With vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik taking centre stage (Chizhik isn't usually a member of the band), 'Village Hassle' makes for a cleverly collaborative rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul release. The titular A-side flaunts Chizhik's vibraphone via the mix alone, fleshing out its low-end elements against a driven instrumental backbeat; 'Monthly Rainfall', meanwhile, goes for all-out slow-jammed soul by way of cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks run through short-release springs.

Review: You can always count on Nautilus to deliver the most sophisticated covers of soul and jazz standards. The Japanese jazz funk outfit have a pristine approach to their craft, but they also know how to edge their own personality into the versions they lay down. So it goes as they approach the monumental 'Move On Up' by Curtis Mayfield, which is no small task. The actual cut on this 7" is the DJ JIN re-edit, which makes the track fit comfortably on a 45 but also makes sure it works for the DJs out there. On the flip 'Beyond The Redemption' has a more uptempo feel thanks to the sharp angles of the drums and the ascendant keys gliding over the dynamic low end.

Review: The Great Revivers is a funk and library band with a focus on organ laced grooves that hails from Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was formed around a decade or so ago from members of bands Wake&Bake! and The Reggaenauts and has put out a steady stream of very danceable 7"s since then. 'Adventures Begin' is their latest and it comes on the Spasibo label with lashing of loquacious saxophone and some nice loose, live drumming. Both of these tunes are imagined classics reimagined that have a fresh West Coast jazz-funk feel and arrive on 45rpm together for the first time. The A-side has a rocky feel and is a version of The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau', while over on the other side Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' gets a new psychedelic twist. Review: We hold our hands up, we don't know anything about Cheeba's Prestige Allstars and cannot find much out either. Echo Chamber Recordings though have got them on this limited 7" and the music is a steamy mix of Afro and Latin funk that comes in two different versions. 'Dig This!' (vocal version) is a raw cut with plenty of hard-edge drums and James Brown samples that liven it up next to some big sax energy. On the back side is the instrumental which is only slightly paired back and still has lots of James Brown mic work.

Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Review: Founded by Roy Ayers in Cincinnati in 1976 as a vehicle for his songs and productions - though, interestingly, he was never a member of the band RAMP recorded and released one album, 1977's sun-soaked jazz-funk opus, Come Into Knowledge. This fantastic 45 from South Street Records' new South Street Soul offshoot showcases two of the set's most admired and in-demand cuts. Edwin Birdsong and William Allen share production credits with Ayers on 'Daylight', a shuffling, dewy-eyed, afternoon-ready delight whose slow groove, meandering synth solos and blissful female vocals recall another Ayers' classic 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine'. Review: James Mason's 'Rhythm of Life' - one of the long overlooked but now celebrated musician's most popular cuts - has never appeared on a seven-inch single before, in part because its' six-minute length made it more suitable for 12" singles and LPs (it first appeared as the title track of Mason's 1977 debut album). Dynamite Cuts have decided to address this by preparing their own (fully licensed) seven-inch edit, which successfully chops down the high-octane, spiritually inspired jazz-funk gem without losing any of its energy or soul. This time round it comes backed by another classic cut from the Rhythm of Life LP, the more laidback, spacey synth solo-sporting jazz-funk warmth of 'Good Thing'.

Review: The work of legendary drummer turned library musician Klaus Weiss continues to be reissued. For this series, Dynamite Cuts are looking back on a mid-1970s series of EPs released by Weiss originally for the famous library Sound Music. Carrying a minimal production that still has appeal for the modern listener (don't Dynamite know it), the four tracks here are curt, squelchy and beat-centric, with highlights including the clavichord-wacky 'Frogs', the sonically obese 'Productive Facilities', and the space-age drum freakout 'Coordinates Meeting'.

Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: Nick Ingram is a criminally lesser-spotted artist whose credits stretch back to 1998, among which include his various instrumental and production contributions to the band The New Electrics, as well as single contributions to compilations by NME and Melody Maker. Review: These two tracks from Mike Bandoni and Chip Wickham have been a long time coming. The two stablemates from the 'Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band' have been discussing a collaboration for years and now; and it's finally in the bag! Mike brings his trademark killer funky drums (recorded by the legendary Malcolm Catto), percussion, Rhodes, bass and vintage guitar vibes to the party, whilst Chip delivers some sublime and highly complimentary work on sax and flute. Review: Two masters of the free / improvisational jazz form, Don Cherry and Jon Appleton, are rare to come by these days. Both artists are highly sought after and difficult to find on the second-hand market, so a reissue of their work - especially together - is the perfect kind of treat for our Thursday morning tasting sessions. This reissue of "Don" comes in 7" format, and its wonky, spaced-out horns and subtle electronics are every bit as strange and daring as they were back in 1970. "Jon", on the flipside, is just as twisted, and possibly even further out there into the ether. Bloody hell...1970! Highly recommended.
