Taking The Stand (Thes One remix)
Taking The Stand (instrumental)
Review: Alongside the wicked new 7" 'Dues And Don'ts / Fraud Fades', Amsterdam producer Soul Supreme simultaneously drops another 45 - of no less import - this time enlisting the fiduciary flows of American producer and emcee Thes One. 'Taking The Stand' includes both the original vocal number and the instrumental on the flip side, with Thes One musing on life's (in)justices, trials and negotiations as Supreme the wunderkind himself segues through wildcard turntable scratches, knocky drum hits and blue-note piano hits.

Summer Cyde
Review: Smoove AKA Jonathan Scott Watson brings us Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride for the most recent Wack Records release. The producer is known for using his cut up style of east coast flavor. On the A-side, 'Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride' uses Pharcyde tracks and edits them seamlessly like a DJ would. Focusing in on the original instrumentals, he creates a jazzy sound with them. 'Summer Cyde' expands upon this theme while using the all-time classic 'Passin Me By' in the mix. This is like having a dub plate of Pharcyde cuts to your own personal bag. Sounds like these will never get old.

2 N The Morning (0:11)
Review: Throwdown Records throw down a fresh reissue of Ice Cube's stone cold classic 'You Know How We Do It', first released as a single from his fourth studio album Lethal Injection (1996). Emblematic of Cube's signature West Coast G-funk, this one's replete with the glissando'd whistles and smokey funk motifs we all know and love from the frozen rap hexahedron, who confidently assures us of us already knowing how he does it. There's no messing with Cube; the track appears alongside the original B flip '2 N The Morning', which ups the bombast to boomier, increasingly sexual nighttime ends.

Review: Rapper Isao Bito mesmerises here with his fluid delivery in 'Ashita no Joe Rap.' "Take it! Take it! Take it!" echoes as a potent punch line that will leave you locked in and ready for more. This miraculous 7" single remixes a renowned tune and blends the iconic 'Ashita no Joe' intro loop with Schooly D's fierce drums, complemented by deft scratches. Isao Bito's rap mastery elevates the track to perfection, stirring primal emotions as it goes. The persuasive flow captivates with sheer intensity as a dynamic exchange of punchlines ensues. Utilizing original multitrakcs from the home of Rick James and The Supremes, Smoove gets his swirv on and delivers two uptempo hip-hop bangers, curveball-tinged with the instrumental backings of Motown. On the A, 'Empty World', we hear an attention-grabbing Nas mashup ('Life's A Bitch'), while the aforementioned artists are equally as well fused on the much more positive B-side.

Review: Snips is back with a bang on his own label Barbershop Records. This time out he offers up the fresh Nebuer EP which is a project undertaken in which he mixes up sample-heavy house and hip-hop sounds, all in a style with which he has become closely associated. The artist has recently become a father for the first time and so that life event was a big influence on this studio work and each makes a specific reference to the different steps on his journey into fatherhood. That makes this a truly personal work but also one that never forgets the club and so the beats remain heavy, compelling, and packed with soulful flourishes.

Review: Heat Rock add yet another breaksy heater to their repertoire and, in so doing, welcome two wicked producers from across the pond into their roster; Altered Tapes from Chicago, and Double A from New Zealand. The former stalwart goes in on an infamous flute loop from The Beatnuts, working in phat kicks and sawn-off breakbeats for a pacier, dancier instrumental version. Double A backs this up on the B with, dedicating a prayer and an amen to the same Dirty South classic. A must-have DJ tool for the aspiring breaks-purveyor.

It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

He shows his class here with two deep and stylish joints for High Water Music. 'Do Your Dance' is up first and has nice low slung and dusty kick drums, organic finger clicks and muttered vocals for a late night feel. He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Here Kero Uno remixes a couple of his tunes and ups their funky quotient to make them more suitable to dancefloors. First, he flips 'Spanish Joint' into a key-laced and funky workout with low-slung, hip-swinging grooves sure to seduce next to the zippy synth leads. On the flip is his hot take on 'Feel Like Makin' Love', another bona-fide gem full of heart and soul.

Review: Coming to Trad Vibe, French music production duo Boar & The Badlibs impress us to no end with their 7" singles, of which their latest 'Bossa Nova Rico Suave' now becomes a part. The track is a clean nuevo-bossa-nova exercise, underlaid by a pumping backbeat making it equally as worthy of an eclectic hip-hop or downtempo mix. We're sure the nominal pun on 'Madlib' isn't without its inspirations. The King Most remix on the flip side is just as neat, drawing on samba while pinning down a bustlingly percussive groove.

Review: This is a special yellow version of this classic hip-hop gem from Jive Records who put out the KRS One rap classic 'Sound Of Da Police'. Besides the popularity of its uniquely catchy 'woop woop' refrain, this early 90s gem was the second and final single from KRS One's debut album Return Of The Boom Bap and importantly criticises the hypocrisies of the American justice system, as well as the horrors of racial profiling and police brutality. Sample nerds will also enjoy this classic's sampling of several greats, including licks by Grand Funk Railroad and Sly And The Family Stone.

Can't Hold It Back (5:14)
Review: Funky Dividends is a label that aims only to preserve classic hip-hop gold as it is - they don't do remixes or edits or mash-ups, they just present stone-cold heat. The label has done so before when it comes to The East Flatbush Project, but each and every time the music sells out so this is a reissue of their clastic-era and golden boom bap gem 'A Madman's Dream'. The snares hit crisp, the bass swings down low and the bars are fresh, with distant flutes adding some mystery. On the flip is the slightly more raw 'Can't Hold It Back.' Two essential hip-hop tunes from the halcyon days.

TF Megamix (4:53)
Sardines Is The Word (4:43)
Review: EDdits master DJ Bacon returns for two of his boxiest yet on the usual 7". Bacon's production style betrays a kind of Buddhist mindfulness, or at least a minimalism, in its approach; all you need is a good beat, ever-so-slightly abstracted from its original context, to arouse the excitations of both mind and body. The fact of not knowing the sample's origin is part of the art; this condition of not knowing fetishises the breakbeat, by partially obfuscating knowledge of where the sample came from. Titles like 'Sardines Is The Word' and 'TF Megamix' are likely coded allusions to these original desiderata, but only the most hardened connoisseurs, a secret club in which Bacon and a select few others surely fraternise, would know exactly which sample sources these are. Thus we have the continued recreation of DJ Bacon as a purveyor of cool; one which enables us to enjoy the slick roundedness of these beats more than we would if the game was given away.

This red hot double shot kicks off with 'Message Like It's Hot', which as you can probably guess form the title alone mixes up a Snoop Dogg classic with a stoney cold hip-hop classics. It's the bars of the former that are dropped over the shimmering lead synth and 80s analogue beats of the latter to make for something simply irresistible. 'Witness Up' is another big one with two more hip hop cuts smashed together in seamless and effortless fashion. Pure fire.

Review: When it comes to crafting party-starting joints featuring classic hip-hop and R&B vocals, few producers can match the output of Gallic rework fiend Jerome Potin AKA Moar. He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Flipside 'HH' is equally as funky and accessible, with cut-up edit effects, rubbery slap-bass sounds, jangling acoustic guitar chords, warming synths and the lead vocal from a much-loved R&B jam. Tons of fun!

It is an indie exclusive via Chrysalis and comes as much of the American pioneers back catalogue has been made available for the first time digitally and via several vinyl reissues. The track details Ocean's memories of his youth and a time when someone close to him died - someone who had taught him lessons that stayed with him - and so naturally the theme of mortality features a lot. Review: Common is a giant of the hip-hop world and his eternally loved 1994 long player Resurrection is one of the best things he ever did. 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is an iconic tune taken from it, and one that is said by many to be one of hip-hop's great ever tunes. It is so admired because of its great lyrical twist and is now on 7" for the first time ever. This vital rap record is timeless and a perfect personification of hip hop which finds Common lamenting what the genre became and how commercial it was after a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s. A gorgeous sample of George Benson's 'The Changing World' is the icing on the cake.

DJ duo Organic and Nick Bike are no strangers to the received edits format, but in their productions, they bring an extra odd, trappy flavour to the mode. On the A-side, we hear Organic lay down a chuggy trap remix of George Clinton's 'Atomic Dog', with canine bowwows and blaring G-funk whistles all in tow. This new one features a pair of pearlers from Jaheim Hoagland, a US r&b singer with some 480 odd credits to his name dating from the year 2000 onwards and including several solid albums. 'Just In Case' has a classic soul sound with buttery smooth vocals and plenty of male yearning over sophisticated production. On the flipside is 'Diamond In Da Ruff' which rides a nice deep hip hop beat and has great interplay between vocalists as a tender flute adds further depth to a real smoocher of a song.

This re-cut version of Markie's classic ode to unrequited love has been remixed and remastered to sound better than ever. Released in 1989, far before the concept of the "friendzone" had crystallised and become a popular meme, we can hear its nascent stirrings in this subversion of original-era hip-hop, in which Markie crudely and comedically spans disgruntled, dejected raps and twinging croons, all expressive of the pain of rejection.

Koralle - "New Levels" (feat Illa J) (2:49)
Modern Sound Quartet - "Chartreuse" (2:33)
Review: An Italian library gem reimagined by beatmaker Koralle and rapper Illa J. An indelible new instalment in Four Flies' Reloved series, 'New Levels / Chartreuse', comes bundled with the original instrumental from late 70s Italian ensemble Modern Sound Quartet. With the aim of the series in mind - which is to put a modern and urban spin on tunes from Italian golden age soundtracks and library music - Koralle deploys his unique jazz-funk sound to create a smooth and stylish hip-hop beat to which Illa J adds irresistible swag and coolness. More than a remix, 'New Levels' takes 'Chartreuse' into the world of contemporary hip-hop and rap.

Rule Of Mind (5:14)
Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most apply named labels of them all. Once again here it brings the serious funk heat on a tidy 7" from The 9th Creation. Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

Nick Nack - "And Ya Say" (Nice It Up edit) (3:50)
Altered Tapes - "Still Runni'" (Bossa B-boy Flip) (4:17)
Review: Few labels are better at saving up big cut-and-paste tunes from the world of hip-hop, r&b, funk and breaks than Heat Rock. Here they come again with more of the goodness, firstly with Nick Nack. His 'And Ya Say' roll deep, with smooth bars flowing freely over the leggy drums. On the reverse, Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take of hip hop classic 'Still Running' in the form of a shuffling Bossa B-boy flip which has Latin percussion and ass-wigging drums. Both of these are floor-friendly cuts that pack in plenty of heritage.

BoomBaptist - "Krush On You" (Queen B remix) (4:37)
Review: Heat Rock Records's 124th outing is also the final 45rpm in their 7" series. It packs a real punch with its bad boy sounds from Cutso (from the Bay Area) and Boombaptist (who hails from Texas). Cutso goes first with the filthy dirty and low slung bass bumps of 'LKMBMT' (Yagoditgowinon) and its Afro vocals and jerking rhythms. On the flip things go slow with BoomBaptist's 'Krush' (Queen B remix) layering up heat-damaged chords and warm boogie bass under some smart bars.

Black Nostaljack (Aka Come On) (feat Run & Kid Capri - Kid Capri mix Tape remix) (3:51)
Review: Bronx titans Camp Lo came out strong when they arrived in the late 90s on Profile Records. Of the many sure shots on their debut LP Uptown Saturday Night, 'Black Nostaljack' was a cool, funked up party jam to get every nodding their approval. It's a classic kind of hip-hop, like an East Coast version of People Under The Stairs, and it sounds super fresh on this 7" from Get On Down. As well as the original version on the A side, the flip features the jacked up 'Mix Tape Remix' from Kid Capri, which turns the heat up good and proper if you need to get the crowd freaking.

Review: Get On Down take another trip back into the history of hip-hop once more to give you two crucial cuts on a tidy little silver 7". This time around we're sliding to 1997 as Wu-Tang Clan made their collective return with second album Wu-Tang Forever. After the seismic impact of 36 Chambers, the Staten Island stronghold went off to explore their own independent avenues and returned to the group dynamic with more skill than ever. These two choice joints from Wu-Tang Forever are stone cold classics, within and beyond the Wu-Tang canon. 'Triumph' was a hit single, but 'Heaterz' remains a true fan favourite thanks to True Master's tough beat and a knockout verse from Inspectah Deck.

Review: US rap royalty Nas's 'Ultra Black' features producer Hit-Boy and was released in mid-summer 2020 as the lead single from his thirteenth album, King's Disease. Lyrically, Nas pays homage to all things Black as he draws on his black heritage and African-American culture while the beats remain deeply laidback with jazzy chords up top. In an interview at the time with NME, the rapper said the song "represents love" although some interpreted the lyrics as a diss towards singer and rapper Doja Cat. This 7" features the vocal version and an instrumental.

Be Great 2 (4:01)
Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. The rhymes are slowed and stretched to match and the whole tune has an aspirational mood that permeates you're being. 'Be Great 2' is continuation that seals the deal.

Review: Gamm has become known for its edits of disco, house and jazz classics but back in the day it used to drop red hot hip hop reworks of golden era sounds. It seems they are now getting back to that with this new three party 7" inch series which is focussed on the American east coast. Lee Gomez aka Wipe The Needle has produced these beats, which are all new, but the vocals will be recognised to hip hop heads. Classic producers are referenced in the sounds here such as Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Dilla and DITC. They make for a couple of dusty and ageless joints that will turn the head of any hip hop fan.

Review: The Gamm label you might know as a relabel source of disco, jazz and Latin edits. But did you know that it originally started out in the hip hop world? Well a new series of releases this year has taken it back into its roots. This third one features two top Wipe The Needle remixes. The lazy swagger and jazz-rap styles of Street Smartz's 'Metal Thing' takes you deep into a world of pillow kicks and starry-eyed chords from the golden era. Big L's 'Put It On' has slightly more crisp boom-bap but still plenty of cosmic melodies as well as smooth bars.

The Big Throwdown (Muro instrumental edit version) (4:32)
Review: Japanese digger doyen Muro returns to one of the most important OG rap records of all time; South Bronx's ultra-funky, politically-sharpened block party jam "The Big Throwdown". The edit titles say it all; Muro's vocal edit really flexes Mike Serrette's vocals right down to the iconic gutsy 'huh!' chant and the big backing vocal rhythm while his instrumental version lets that groove run loose as the plucked bass walks cut through with charm and the keys spiral out of control in the best way possible. An stone cold classic.

Review: German label Oonops Drops is ever more essential if you ask us and tidy 7"s like this prove why (as does their mission to focus is on "sustainability, climate protection and socio-cultural values".) 'Bird's Lament' is a top tier tune from Slick Walk x Sneaky with live drum breaks and serene strings making for a reflective late night vibe. On the flip of this limited edition and clear slice of wax is Avantgarde Vak with the sweet hip hop sounds of 'Keep Ya Eyes Up' then Toshiyuki Sasaki with his sublime 'Toshi's Bonus Breaks.'
