Review: It has been a while since Umbo released any new music but now he is back on the Austrian label Resense with a superb pair of edits on this essential little 45 rpm. Kicking things off is 'Grits' which is a hard hitting bit of b-boy funk and breaks with old school soul vocals and plenty of horn stabs powering it ever onwards and upwards. '23h' is a little more seductive but no less busy with tightly woven bongos and congas peppering the high speed funk groove. Fantastic stuff that we hope is the start of much more to come from edit king Umbo.

Review: This project, which translates to "The Way of Music" in English, is a collaborative initiative spearheaded by Groh, founder of the esteemed Polish hip-hop label JuNouMi which was established in 2002. It marks a fusion of talents between Polish and Japanese artists and commenced with Twardowski crafting music using samples from Japanese albums followed by the inclusion of MCs KANETSUGU and Prykson Fisk. DJs 1an from Tokyo and DJ Eprom from Warsaw joined the ensemble while the design, handled by Magorzata "Mauko" Korczak, explores Japanese Shod? calligraphy. Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018. One was captured at Moscow's Magnetone studio during Lee's visit for the premiere of a movie documenting his prior recording with The Soul Surfers, and the other was recorded remotely with The Soul Surfers at their Nizhniy Novgorod headquarters and Lee at his London studio, The Shop. The collaboration is a fruitful one with two sublime and timeless funk cuts featuring some bittersweet replaying of classic melodies.

Review: Producer Soul Supreme is back with another 7" record, delivering two new phat'uns to that subsection of fans who prefer things on the wonkier side. Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

Review: UK Northern soul-food wholesalers Kent Dance are experts in procuring and supplying and continue to stick their necks out in this regard with a brand new reissue of The Soul Children's 'Standing In The Safety Zone', backed up by Sylvia And The Blue Jays' 'Put Me In The Mood' on the flip. The former track is an androgyne vocal soul, car-stereo'ed burst of joy, on which, despite the overarching feel of ecstasy, we hear duetting singers Anita Louis' and John Colbert's lyrics sing of remaining in one's comfort zone, which depending on the interpretation could either be heard as sardonic or earnest. Sylvia and co.'s B-side sounds as great as ever, being the breathy, flirtatious number it always was, yet with its best elements fleshed out ever-further by this 7" pressing.

Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. This one has romantic sax notes and gentle grooves with jazzy keys finishing it in style.

Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and multiple TV performances, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Organic and authentic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 track 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' didn't get much attention at the time - his attempt at doing disco wasn't well received - but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is expressive and powerful against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This single has both Say She She's cover - as well as the original - on a 7" disc.
