All This Love That I'm Givin' (3:53)
Maybe I'll Find Somebody New (3:25)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Reggae For Roy (3:07)
Review: King Most is a revered American edit and remix master who is back with yet another big vinyl drop. This one is the first on his own new KM label and has already, we're told, been getting some high-profile plays from the likes of A-Trak. The A-side pairs off two epic classics - 'Bam Bam Tom Tom Club' has that languid, ass-wiggling groove you know and love with a twisted reggae vocal to make for something brilliantly original. The B, meanwhile, is a vinyl-only exclusive packed with Jamaican sunshine. 'Reggae For Roy' is perfectly organic and horizontal with its new reggae beat delivered under a classic Roy Ayers vocal.

Review: With both tracks now coming out for the first time on 7" vinyl, the 'Liquid Love' and 'What's The T?' 7" single is a must get for all Roy Ayers fans and serious music collectors, not least as 2023 witnesses Roy's final ever tour of live dates. This release is a fitting tribute to the career of one of the most influential musicians in global Black music history and each track represents his virtuosity as a vibesman and his versatility across genres. 'Liquid Love' is taken from the 2015 BBE released album of Roy's unreleased material, Virgin Ubiquity II and is a wicked mid-tempo track where Roy's vibraphone complements an amazing female vocal arrangement to create harmonies and melody over a tough-as-you-like breakbeat, bassline and keyboard riff.

2 N The Morning (0:11)
Review: Throwdown Records throw down a fresh reissue of Ice Cube's stone cold classic 'You Know How We Do It', first released as a single from his fourth studio album Lethal Injection (1996). Emblematic of Cube's signature West Coast G-funk, this one's replete with the glissando'd whistles and smokey funk motifs we all know and love from the frozen rap hexahedron, who confidently assures us of us already knowing how he does it. There's no messing with Cube; the track appears alongside the original B flip '2 N The Morning', which ups the bombast to boomier, increasingly sexual nighttime ends.

Review: The wonderful Mr K is back with more edit magic on his own Most Excellent label, this time adding his own spin to 'Wela Wela', a hard edge and raw funk cut from Black Blood, a band of musicians from central Africa but who were based in Belgium. This one was never a hit back in the day for some reason but is built on a killer groove that Mr K reworks and tweaks for more suitable dance floor deployment. It was formerly on his Grass Roots record but now makes its way to a handy 7". On the flip is 'Komi Ke Kenam (Fish & Funjee)' which has tough breaks and funk bass that will ensure 'floors get down and dirty.

Review: A great choice of reissue by Kent Dance, Carolyn Crawford's 'Get Up And Move' is a fiery vocal soul highlight, and impassioned plea to the object of her affections to "get up and move", before he, she or they do something they "don't wanna do". It's a situation we can all relate to, but this recollection of Crawford's rendition of the scene lends the feeling an extra weight, igniting the inner carpe diem in all of us. From the unheard vaults of Mickey Stevenson's Mpingo label in the early 70s, it now comes double-billed with the Motownier 'Sugar Boy' on the flip, also hitherto unheard.

You Can't Turn Me Away (Mato dub version) (3:54)
Review: Thomas Blanchot aka Mato's love for reggae runs deep. His love for soul music is just as equal. So, what should a producer do who enjoys making original music but also enjoys the art of sampling? Use both! Known for creating reggae/dub versions and then using popular lyrics sung by a guest vocalist over the top of them, giving the original versions a new life and sometimes, a completely different feeling, in some ways working even better than the original. Here, Mato takes the 1981 hit by Sylvia Striplin 'You Can't Turn Me Away' and a super laid back reggae rhythm underneath as a base. And it works so well. Complete with the dub version for the DJs. Sit back and relax to these interesting examples of a stylish way to take mashups to a different higher level.

Belfast (2:19)
Review: From the 1979 LP Accadde A... by Arawak, this superb 7" showcases standout Italian Library recordings that you need in your life. Arawak, one of Luciano Simoncini's many pseudonyms, crafted compositions for film scores, radio, and television in Italy and this album remained obscure until the legendary Madlib heavily sampled it in 2000 and drove up the price of originals. The LP received its first reissue by Golden Pavilion in 2017 so fans could cop it once more and now two of the best bits from it are on their own record. Both tracks oscillate between mellow dreamy atmospheres and irresistible drum breaks with 'Bali' being sampled in 'Real Eyes' by Quasimoto in 2000, and b-side jam coming on strong with bagpipes intertwined with punchy bass and steady drums.

Whereas the first two releases were covers, the label now delivers a wholly original slice of Betty material, 'Lonely Man'. Featuring a whopping ten tracks, it was recorded in the BBC's Paris Studios in Regent Street, London and fact fans will note that 'Honey Don't which was later included on the album Beatles For Sale and sung by Ringo, here features John on the vocals. Elsewhere the EP captures the band's irresistible melodies and tight harmonies with three of the tunes originally penned by the band's favourite rockabilly star Carl Perkins. Review: Yuki Kanesaka returns with a delicious uptempo remix-cover of Herbie Hancock's thoroughgoing jazz patent, 'Watermelon Man'. In respectful contrast to Hancock's original piece, Kanesaka deploys a to-the-letter rendition of the original's opening Hindewhu whistle hoot - also heard on the mashup B-side - and keeps up Hancock's intended 'mathematical balance' with a nonetheless meatier, dance-ready EQ balance. Legend has it that this was Hancock's first ever song to be composed with commercial success in mind; we're not surprised at its continued proliferation, appreciation and reproduction across the globe - and now in Japan, no less.

It has 'Brothers And Sisters' on the A side, the lead single from the album, which boasts a Marvin Gaye-sque 70s soul vibe that is sure to ignite dancefloors with a hint of Northern Soul magic. On the flip side, 'This Is You' is a blue-eyed soul stomper. David's musical journey began in New York's church scene at age four. Review: Bobby Byrd comes strutting on posthumously through to Sedsoulsociety with 'Never Get Enough'. This ineluctable treat was first released on Brownstone Recordings sometime during the early 70s funk heyday, and was produced and arranged by none other than that ingenious titan, James Brown, together with the beautiful 'My Concerto'. We usually wouldn't forgive the removal of the latter track from any reissue, but we're making an exception here, for the fact that an even greater treat lines this B-side reissue: a formerly unreleased instrumental of said James Brown classic production. Funk completists hardly need to be told not to sleep on this one.

Review: London's Symphonical Records is always focussed on spotlighting the work of artists of colour. This latest revival and issuing of a previously unreleased cut looks to Van Jones who has two lovely slices of soul pressed up on this crucial 7". 'I Want To Groove You' opens with some lovely swooning strings that immediately set a luxurious tone, while the super smooth and crystal-cut vocals are laidback and loved up. Flip it over and you get 'Your Love Is Like A High' which is even more slow and seductive with melancholic strings and slow motion drums all acting as musical catharsis.

Review: Sometimes reunions can be awkward. A load of people who lost touch trying to ignore the nagging 'whys' and 'what ifs' of their now-fractured shared histories, while attempting to 'catch up' on what's been going on since they fell out of regular contact ages ago. Thankfully, Warpaint's return to the release schedule after a two year hiatus, and their return to Rough Trade, the label they started out on, only feels right. Common Blue is a two-sided single that also serves as a reminder of why we fell for the band in the first place, 20 years ago (if that doesn't make you feel old, more references are available). The title track is best described as an earthy-groover, melodies effortlessly flowing over hushed vocals, arrangement wrapped around a strolling rhythm. In comparison, 'Underneath' takes the tempo down, beautiful sung harmonies and gentile guitar chords creating the sonic equivalent to a summer afternoon by the lake.

His 'She Caught The Train' is something of an early reggae classic that now makes its way onto 7" vinyl for the first time. It was originally released in 1970 on the Trojan sub-label Joe in the UK and then rose to fame once more as a cover version from UB40 in 1983. Review: Sam Don (the man behind recent lovers' rock and UK soul comps For The Love of You and Just A Touch) kicks off his brand new label Sweet Free Association with a reissue that takes us all the way back to 1984. The artist behind it, keyboardist and composer Carl Moore, only pressed up 100 copies of this when he put it out back then so it is a truly rare and coveted 7" that comes from a man who went on to be associated with peers with artists such as Phyllis Hyman, Janet Jackson and James Cleveland. Both shorn ahead of time from his latest LP, Bewilderment, 'In Your Corner' and 'Bewilderment' are pensive retro soul falsettoers, both of which feature Jay's own, longing vocals, and evince a mood of being caught in between two difficult paths in life. Sun Storm (0:09)
Review: A rocksteady and ska band from Geneva, Switzerland? Yes, you read that right! Since they started releasing a little over a half-decade ago, the ensemble Cosmic Shuffling have been busy with two (soon to be three) and roughly ten singles worth of material. Their latest 7" lands back on the Fruits label where their previous has made them surge in popularity. 'Sputnik', the title track has a big horn section with a ska overtone while the B-side instrumental 'Sun Storm', really stands out from the crowd with the more reggae sound. This is a dynamite little 45 that is versatile and useful for any eclectic DJ.

Yume Tabibito (4:09)
Review: On this fresh 7" from Columbia Records' Japanese division, we hear pressed to wax two key musical motifs (yes, there are two) from the TV anime Saint Seiya, 'Sentoshi Shinwa Soldier Dream', as well as its counterpart, 'Yume Tabibito'. With the anime concerning the travails and trials of a five-piece justice-league of Athenian intergalactic warriors - who each wear their own "Cloths", i.e. supernatural outfits that grant each protagonist special, demiurgic powers - you can expect each piece to be as rousing and galactic as that description suggests.

Komet Ride (2:57)
Review: Available in extremely limited quantities, this new 7" from Burning Soul arrives in both black, or as we have it here, white, and it's another gem from Kidding that keeps up this fine Swiss label's high-quality output. The A-side bursts to life with 'Seriously,' a blistering funk anthem infused with Hammond-organ melodies, underpinned by a deep bass groove and gritty guitar licks. Flipping over to the B-side, 'Komet Ride' kicks up the tempo with even more vigorous drumming and exhilarating organ solos. It's a whirlwind of funk brilliance, underscoring Kidding's knack for delivering electrifying musical adventures.

Review: Rapper Isao Bito mesmerises here with his fluid delivery in 'Ashita no Joe Rap.' "Take it! Take it! Take it!" echoes as a potent punch line that will leave you locked in and ready for more. This miraculous 7" single remixes a renowned tune and blends the iconic 'Ashita no Joe' intro loop with Schooly D's fierce drums, complemented by deft scratches. Isao Bito's rap mastery elevates the track to perfection, stirring primal emotions as it goes. The persuasive flow captivates with sheer intensity as a dynamic exchange of punchlines ensues. This is a tune with a great duality at its heart and will leave the dance floor in awe.
