Deep House
ZZZ
ZZZ (Volta Cab Warehouse mix)
Akom (original mix)
Inc (origina mix)
Review: Commencing the new Italian imprint Frole in style, Danny Ward, better known as Dubble D, is presenting his Moodymanc alias in a convoluted artist mix up that needn't raise concerns about the quality of house music contained within. "ZZZ" is pared right down to a minimal hum, with just the bare essentials of drums at work while developed content thrums away at the core of the track for those that listen closely enough. Volta Cab brings a much bigger sound to the remix, slapping some chunky chords and choice bleeps over the top and beefing the drums up no end. "Akom" returns to more restrained tones, with plenty of space for vocal snippets to echo in and pristinely arranged drums, while "Inc" warms things up a treat with chord-infected smooth house tones and a much breezier outlook overall.

Review: To date, Lee Gamble's UIQ label has done a fine job squaring the spotlight on some lesser heralded exponents of cutting edge club experimentation such as Glaswegian Lanark Artefax, Cairo-based Zuli and Latvian N1L. The addition of Budapest's Stephan Olbricht is a step out of this tradition then, with the Hungarian a well-known and regarded name for his work on Opal Tapes, Farbwechsel, Gang Of Ducks and most recently, Lobster Theremin. On the basis of this four-track ZZM EP, Olbricht does fit right in on UIQ however, packing a quartet of punch-drunk ambient techno rollage that sounds like Gamble himself after a few hours on the green. Actress and Huerco S are other names that spring to mind, "J UC" has that similar feeling of stasis to it that the Werk Discs boss does so well whilst closer "F10a1" is quite heavenly.

Review: The musical juggernauts that respond the respective calls of 'Tiga' and 'Zombie Nation' converge as ZZT for new single "ZZafrika". It's pure peak time goodness, with a driving, almost squealing synth line augmented by a chunky electro beat, which is topped off with an infectious vocal snippet reminiscent of their 2008 smash "The Worm". Already tried and test by the big boys - this is hot hot hot.

Review: As one of the world's leading collectors of Italo-disco records, DJ/producer Flemming Dallum is a perfect choice to rework some of the countless Italo-flavoured gems nestled in ZYX Records' vast back catalogue. What he's delivered, showcased across this excellent compilation, is genuinely excellent, with his versions remaining faithful to the originals while stripping out any duff elements and adding a dash of late-night, club-ready sleaze. Highlights include Dallum's 'instrumental dub' style reworks of Mono Band's 'Ghost Town' and Lectric Workers' 'Robot Is Systematic', a pleasingly mind-altering revision of 'Witch' by Helen, and a brilliant rearrangement of P Lion's anthemic 'Happy Children'.

Review:  ZYX out of Germany sure does know a thing or two about proper good disco from across the spectrum. This year they have dropped some vital reissues of classic albums and tunes like Delanua's 'How Many Fill' and BIBA's Top Model and now they drop the second instalment of their Italo Disco Spacesynth collection. It does exactly what it says on the tin with dazzling tunes that reach for the stars. The production is delightfully analogue and retro from Koto's shiny 'Visitors' to the twee arps of Cyber People's 'Polaris.'

Review: This one does what it says on the tin. German compilers ZYX have put together a stonking array of contemporary Italo disco cuts, showing off what modern producers can do with a now well-defined sound. Artists including Stockholm Nightlife, Diego, Love Kills, and Valerie Dore all appear, deploying lovesick, city-slicking themes: you've got gated snares, riffy synth arps and impassioned masc vocals aplenty. Marc Fruttero & Alex Papale's 'What You Want' is particularly dreamy and atmospheric, owing to Italo's longstanding ability to evoke more than just its poppy structure. No wonder the genre is a favourite among the world's biggest-name DJs.

Review: It's not a lie to say that ZYX Records boasts the largest archive of Italo-disco in the world. The label released (and licensed) tons of Italo and Euro-disco in the 1980s and has continued to do so since, buying up the catalogues of now dormant imprints to expand its repertoire. Hence the label's ongoing 'Italo-Disco' compilation series has reached its 32nd instalment. There's plenty to set the pulse racing amongst the 22 full-length tracks, with our picks including the classic, mid-80s throb of Ken Scott's 'The Voice I Feel Inside', the pleasingly camp 'Black Jack' by Tom Cat, the delay-laden beats and bleep melodies of The Creatures' 'Machine Drama (Maxi Version)', the 'Digital Remix' of P Lion's stone-cold classic 'Happy Children' and kaleidoscopic cheeriness of 'Shotgun (Into The Night) (Remix)' by Laserdance.

Buraye is the man in the driver's seat and sets his sights on the stars with 'Zydereen De Neptuno' which has zippy synths and snappy snares all weaving in and out of the drums. 'Black Light' then has a more menacing and darker bassline and 'Lead-Acid Mentality' brings the cyborg funk with a punchy beat and snaking bassline keeping you guessing. Last of all is 'Nocturnal Passengers' - defined by its squelchy and plunging bassline.

Review: Over the years, Jan Jelinek has been responsible for some fantastically inventive experimental records. His latest is a concept album inspired by a radio play he wrote for German radio, in which every collage-style track was crafted from an interview with a different public figure (these include Yoko Ono, Marcel Duchamp, John Cage and Lady Gaga). These vocal excerpts, which include non-verbal sounds as well as speech, were also used to control a synthesizer. While the nuts and bolts are pretty far-sighted and next level, the results are actually rather enjoyable and easy to listen to. For every dystopian, mind-altering cut-up track, there are four or five others that veer closer to left-of-centre ambient bliss. It's an intriguing and hugely entertaining collection, all told.

Review: Eliaz is a prolific techno producer and true master of his hardware. He heads off in a cosmic direction on this new EP with the journeying acid techno of 'Visitore' laying a great foundation with its long legged drums and pounding bass. 'Second Start' is a slippery electro jam with fizzing synths and classic cow bell pings while the flip side gets much more manic, with clipped kicks and squealing metal snares making 'Everybody In' a visceral groove. '12H/Sun' is the unhinged cosmic banger that everyone needs in their life come 4am on the right dance floor.

Review: O! Kult was a post-punk and industrial band from Yugoslavia that was active in the 1980s. Like many of their peers at the time, they were censored by the communist party that was in charge but that didn't stop them from making music and gaining a cult following. Their cut 'Zvestoba' has been found in old Radio student archives and brought back to life here and then remixed by modern luminaries Silent Servant, Christian Kroupa (who is one half of Black Dot) and 198319831983. They add weighty tech, EBM and moody electro vibes to make for a strong package.

Panic 01 kicks off with Tom Pest's' "Zuperman" - an up-tempo and somewhat comedic sample heavy epic. Next up is Mr Wulf's "Snatch" - a jazzy & deep two-step workout. Side B begins with "Now Panic" - a jackin' 4x4 club track by Ben Pest, and we finish this debut with Match Handlers' tongue-in-cheek hands-up-house vocal "Lady, You Ain't Ugly".

Review: Legendary reggae imprint Greensleeves launches their new dubstep offshoot here with a suitably titanic match up between Yellowman and Horsepower Productions for their inaugural release. Yellowman's "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng" is widely regarded as bridging the gap between the dancehall and hip-hop worlds and is perhaps the toaster's most ubiquitous track. Equally, Horsepower Productions are credited with being instrumental in the sonic formation of dubstep, so they seem perfectly suited to take on the task of realigning Yellowman's "Zunga.." for the dubstep cognoscenti. There's a vocal and dub mix available here and it's the former that truly impresses here, Yellowman's distinctive tones strangely suited to the break heavy twisted industrial stepping subterranean riddim Horsepower have crafted. Big!

Given how much original copies still fetch, it feels right for his very first solo 12" on Soul:r to get a fresh airing and put paid to the sharks. 'Zumbar' leads the way on this two-tracker, carrying some of those ascendant Rhodes notes and dusty brass stabs that made for a new angle on soulful D&B. Sharper than liquid, and a touch fatter than the Full Cycle crew, Intalex struck on something special here. The same goes on the flip with 'Temperance', which leans in on the synths for an amen powered peak time rusher that hasn't aged a bit.

Alles In Allem
Review: The Funke man returns with his first 12" for Kompakt in over a decade! German producer Sascha Funke has a long and productive relationship with the Cologne outpost dating back to the Compass 12" issued through the label in 1999, and lately this has manifested itself through Saschienne. The ongoing music project between Funke and wife Julienne Dessagne, Saschienne 2012 LP was full of deep, sweeping techno and it's an approach he takes with this Zug Un Zug 12". The title cut is pure Funke, gradually building from just a few elements into a hugely dramatic dancefloor epic themed around perfectly placed piano chords. It is complemented well by the more urgent drive of "Alles In Allem" made all the more distinctive by some bizarro, almost Giallo synths.

K2 Attack!
Review: Yet another bold and challenging Wild Oats 12", a label that seems to be positively affronted by some of the meekness currently getting mislabelled as techno. Zug Island sees label boss Kyle Hall team up with Detroit Underground's Kero for two productions inspired by their visit to the toxic metal factory on Zug Island, housed between Detroit and Windsor, Canada on the Detroit Rouge river. The label explicitly states this record is "intended to sonically personify the environment of Zug Island and its harmful industrial vibrations it currently has on the river, wildlife and even the humans residing there". Naturally there's an underlying anger present throughout, with "Zug Island" setting menacing 303 loops spiralling over a sparse backdrop of clattering snares. With no discernable kick drum, the track tends to float in corroded stasis, though this lack of driving force makes it a perfect track to combine with drum heavy DJ tools. Complementing this, "K2 Attack!" is less abstract but more abrasive, rising from the high frequency noise into a rigid frame of bubbling electro in the style of Detroit's techno forefathers.

Their music still resonates to this day - and fetches high prices for those willing to pay it - but thankfully reissues like this keep it available to those of us more interested in the music than the format or the investment value. This one is rooted in cold wave and synth elegance, with its loose-limbed rhythms and bendy chords, cosmic intonations and ever-optimistic melodies all making for a brilliantly unique listen and cosmic journey.

Zuckerhut (TBD remix)
Zuckerhut (John Talabot remix)
Review: One of Permanent Vacation's flagship tunes (OK if you put Tensnake and Azari & III to the side for a minute), "Zucker Hut" gets the remix treatment from TBD and John Talabot. NYC duo TBD (aka Lee Douglas and Justin Van Der Volgen) have been in mouth watering form of late, with their recent remix of Cos/Mes drawing healthy doses of praise from those in the know, whilst Spanish producer John Talabot has been getting global attention despite maintaining a deliberately low profile. Both remixes here are winners in our books, with TBD coming in heavy on the piano while Talabot loosens then groove for a synth heavy rerub.

Review: The original of this first saw the light back in autumn 2013, and it remains a dynamically built nu-disco track boasting early Aeroplane style piano licks and an arresting vocal from Kristina Train. It's Blamma Blamma at their most stately and stunning. Here we find it in remix form; Psychemagik provide a liquid, bulbous bass facelift, Cato re-emphasises the nude beauty with a few edit sparkles, Wolf + Lamb go deeper with a synth heavy late-night floor stomper while Kiani vs Red D close the show with a sunset-minded slice of modern euphoria. Each twist adding a whole new chapter to the Blamma Blamma story, the only problem is working out which rub to add in your next set.

Review: The little-known Traffic Records are a curious bunch, blending intriguing inner labels, adorned with various art styles, with gregarious dance music. Based in Frankfurt, they always set out to do justice to their homedown, sourcing local artists almost exclusively. New signee Mayell chucks cut-up vocoders and street-traffic basses into a beguiling stew, producing four cuts that would sound right at home in a modern-day spy thriller.

Review: There's no doubt that Singapore's Zouk, the Far East's longest established super club, is a special place. Over the course of 20 years, the riverside venue has built a formidable reputation as a muST visit clubbing destination, thanks largely to its unique atmosphere, stunning decor and labyrinthine layout. For those who have partied hard at Zouk, this triple-CD mix (two discs from venue residents Jeremy Boon and djB, and one from Defected big man Simon Dunmore) will bring back some happy memories. Killer underground selections are thin on the ground, of course, but this is all about anthems - high quality crossover hits ("Rej", "To Be In Love", "Elle", "Jaguar" etc) that excited and inspired dancers at Asia's finest club.

Morning Haze
Spiritu Haret
Review: Romanian producer Adrian Niculae hasn't pulled up many trees in his short production career, but his name has turned some heads thanks to this 2-tracker for All Inn Black. Both "Morning Haze" and "Spiritu Haret" fuse stark, hypnotic, minimalist rhythms with beautiful and engaging musical elements. "Morning Haze", for example, benefits from the combination of deep chord stabs and loose, additional percussion. "Spiritu Haret", on the other hand, has a breaksy shuffle and muted riffs that sound like filtered horn hits. Throughout, there's much warmth, something often lacking from similarly stripped-back productions.

Review: Type the name Boban Petrovic into Discogs and you'll come across a Serbian producer and selector whose 1984 album Zora racks up quite a pretty penny amongst the collectors community. Kudos then to Belgrade crew Disco Not Disco who have reissued the album with the official blessing of Boban himself for the interest of those partial to some Balkan Disco but not at the premium prices the original pressing is listed at. Petrovic's work is new to us and it may be new to you but fans of the weirder strains of disco will resonate immediately with this eight track set with plenty of material you could envisage Alexis le Tan or Young Marco slipping in their sets.

Review: Mister Saturday Night's second release of the week comes from a new Glaswegian producer, the enigmatically names Atlus, who drops the fresh and exciting "Zopiclone", a bizarre and squawking house cut that jitters its way through stumbling low-ends and brittle pieces of percussion. While that is certainly the stand out moment in terms of pure oddity, "Gum" is nothing short of excellent, and its funky disco swing truly hits the spot, whereas "A Little More Time" is the downtempo sibling, the part of the EP that is open to interpretation and one beautiful beatless sway of melodies.

Review: From the musical minds behind Dazzle Ships - NYC based party raconteurs extraordinaire - comes Zoovox. On the newly minted Lectric Sands imprint run by the very same people, Zoovox present their mission statement in musical form via the "Zoovox Theme" a decidedly backwards looking slo-mo excursion through 80s Linn drum patterns, outer galactic synth work and epic arpeggios with some deft sampling of classic Chuck Jones cartoonage thrown in for good measure. Impeccably presented as a one sided twelve with suitably tropical artwork - this is one of the most accomplished retro disco excursions we've heard in some time.

Review: Rezzett may not be the most high profile name amongst the swelling discography of The Trilogy Tapes, but last year's self-titled 12? for Will Bankhead's label was arguably one of the imprint's highlights to date. The three tracks were a skewed combination of scratchy rhythms and frazzled melodies that took the description "lo-fi" to new places. It's up against some stiff competition but Zootie might be the finest looking TTT so far with numerous hand screen printed stamps adorning both the outer and inner sleeves. It's matched musically too as both "Zootie" and the accompanying "Yavas mix" applies Rezzett's blasted sonics and applies them to some wondrous ambient chords with the former throwing in some speaker blowing hardcore rhythms too.

Review: Back in 2014, veteran Kiwi saxophonist and flautist Nathan Haines joined forces with regular collaborators Mike Patto, Vanessa Freeman and 4 Hero's Marc Mac on a limited-edition album called "5 a Day". Four years on, he's assembled the same team to re-record and remix it. The results are, for the most part, spectacular. Rooted in jazz-funk but also incorporating elements of boogie, hip-hop, nu-jazz and samba, "Zoot Allure" offers a near perfect balance of sunny vibes, expert musicianship, great songs and memorable dancefloor grooves. The latter aspect is emphasized by the presence of two superb, club-ready reworks of album highlight "Got Me Thinking" by Opolopo and West London broken beat legends Bugz In The Attic.

Review: Frank Nova and Oliver Schleenvoigt have been teaming up as Monoroom for two years. With their very own interpretation of tech house, the Stuttgart based guys came up last year with their debut single. The record received massive support from international DJs and brought them a lot attention. With their new single "Zoom Zoom", Monoroom once more show their perfect ability at combining 80's synth lines with fat bass lines and modern, tricky programmed grooves. On the flip side you find is a very cool after hours tune called "My Black Sunglasses": deep and groovy but still as kicking! Included is a remix of "Zoom Zoom", done by Markus Lange.

Review: King Unique have cemented a fantastic reputation for themselves over the last few years having made some seminal tracks for labels like Boys Own. Now they have their own brand - Curfew, named after the regular club nights that they put on up and down the country. The first release - "To The Left" got massive acclaim and huge amounts of DJ play. This follow up release under their alter ego - Kupon is also a killer. This has been caned now for a long time since before the Summer by the likes of Pete Tong and Fergie from early CD promos. The two tracks which are both variations on a theme are simply devastating. The A side "Zoom In" starts with its chugging bassline and spacey percussion before building and dropping into some seriously powerful synth edits. The flip side varies the theme slightly with a harder approach and powerful synths. This record has very serious potential and will crossover into many different genres.

But he only puts out a small quantity of tracks a year. Now Chus has signed to Blackout '77 and delivers "Zoom", a storming minimal electro anthem, nearly 10 minutes of minimalistic brilliance sounding similar to some Luciano and Cadenza releases - full on electro beats and catchy and surrounding melodic elements.

Review: Four Flies are dab hands at digging out the finest curios from the hidden depths of Italian music culture, and this is surely one of their proudest proclamations. Guiliano Sorgini recorded the soundtrack to Riccardo Fellini's TV movie Zoo Folle in 1974, and the soundtrack came out the same year. Far more than a set of modest instrumentals or functional library music, this is raging, heavy psych funk of the highest order, with raunchy riffs, bugged-out flute, intense percussive beatdowns and so much more besides. Whichever plucky diggers originally unearthed this holy grail must have lost their tiny minds, because even framed with the significance it deserves, this is an out-of-this world record we're very fortunate to have back in our reach.

It is the album that announced his skills on the world stage and that set him on a course for the cult status he enjoys today amongst lovers of this sound. It is chock full of beats to get los in, with zoned out synths and nods to funk, soul and jazz along the way. Smooth drums, sax riffs and hip hop shout outs all add colour and character to the most lovely joints.
