Review: The debut solo album by David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash fame, If I Could Only Remember My Name is an ironic title for an artist first striking out on their commercial own. But despite its faux-amnesiac title, this freak-folk opus is actually a striking claim to, not a loss of, personal musical identity. Following the success of 1970's Deja Vu with Stills & Nash, Crosby sought to expound on that album's methodology - hard psychedelic drugs, brushes with insanity, copious studio time - to produce a crisp, profound and multifaceted vision on the intersection of blues, folk and collective music-making, with every legend from Neil Young to Joni Mitchell to Graham Nash in tow. The highlight has to be, above all, 'Tamalpais High (At About 3)'.

Review: Recorded and released in The Netherlands by Gerry Teekens for his Criss Cross label in 1985, Chet's Choice marked one of the best studio albums from Chet Baker's final years. He would die in The Netherlands after falling from the window of his hotel room in Amsterdam on May 13, 1988. Chet's Choice presents Baker, beautifully captured in stereo, singing and playing the trumpet in an intimate trio format with guitarist Philip Catherine (born in England but raised in Belgium, Chet frequently worked with him from 1983 to 1988) and Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on most of the tracks (three tunes were taped during a second session with Dutch bassist Hein van de Geijn). This expanded edition presents the full seven tunes from the original album plus three songs that only previously appeared on the CD edition of Chet's Choice, as well as five amazing never before heard alternate takes, which add nearly 40 minutes of unreleased music to Chet Baker's superb catalogue.

Review: Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse (1966-1968) is the third release of previously unissued recordings of the iconic pianist Ahmad Jamal captured live at the hallowed Penthouse jazz club in Seattle, WA, between 1966-1968, with bassist Jamil Nasser and drummer Frank Gant. Produced for release by "Jazz Detective" Zev Feldman, and supervised by Jamal himself, these recordings were transferred from the original tape reels and mastered for vinyl by the legendary Bernie Grundman. This deluxe 180-gram 2xLP gatefold set includes an extensive booklet with rare photos by Don Bronstein, Chuck Stewart, and others; essays by producer Zev Feldman, journalist Eugene Holley, Jr., radio DJ and original recording engineer Jim Wilke, son of the Penthouse owner, Charlie Puzzo Jr., and Joe Alterman; and interviews with pianists Les McCann, Monty Alexander and Emmet Cohen.

Review: Danielle Boutet's Pieces is a mysterious artifact of Quebecois marginalia, self-released in 1985. Seeming to land squarely in the French no wave niche, yet nonetheless defying it through sinister inversions of the form, the reissued album comes as a reminder of Boutet's impressive command over atmosphere and narrative. Arabesque monologues in her native French soar over warblingly warm arpeggios, which sound ready-primed for traversals of Transylvania, while the more languid cuts make use of impressively synthetic emulations of what could otherwise sound like affectedly acoustic instruments, such as the "harmonica" on 'En attendant l'aube'. This is a welcome unearthing of an otherwise unconscious album, made in the space between REM sleep and authentic, out-of-the-limelight living.

Review: Contemporary D.C. punk gets another run for its money with this seven-year anniversary of No Man's 'Glitter And Spit' EP. Emerging from the city's punk scene with the collective voracity of a starved vat of piranhas, the four-piece band came together amid the fallout of prior project Majority Rule, albeit with a similar set of musical-political aims. The EP evidences No Man's sound as huge and clunking, thanks to the nearly slowcore-esque drums and guitars of Pat Broderick and Kevin Lamiell (in its slower moments, at least), yet coming fronted by a toothy, harpish snarl by vocalist Matt Michel, backed up by guest vocalist Maha Shami on one track. The faster moments are monumentally cathartic and powerful; this is by far one of the most intense punk records we've heard all year so far, carrying enough home-headbang potential to evince many a rageful family moshpit from the sound alone, let alone the commentary over the Israeli-Palestine conflict it also bears.

Review: More Specials is the second studio album from the Coventry band, originaly released in 1980 and reportedly splitting opinion among their fanbase, although it's come to be seen as a classic containing many of their best loved songs, from ska knees up 'Enjoy Yourself' to the deadpan reggae of 'Do Nothing'. Produced by the band's own keyboardist Jerry Dammers, it had a more eclectic and less obviously punk sound than its Elvis Costello-produced predecessor, with the band's constant disagreements on the direction of the sound proving a creative rather destructive force here, even if it would - barely more than a year later - cause them to eventually split.

Review: The debut LP from Oakland, California based collective Leaving conjures the spirit of retro, esoteric doom metal yet repurposed for ethereal, melancholic shoegazing. Formed in 2021, and made up of a plethora of seasoned musicians who've previously cut their teeth in the likes of Noothgrush, Amber Asylum, Graves At Sea, Lycus, and Funerary, the group marry the aggressive post-rock shoegaze of modern peers in Nothing and Whirr, with the oppressive meandering doom of Saint Vitus or Reverend Bizarre. Gloomy, lengthy, dirges of nocturnal depravation, unpacking feelings of isolation, desolation and the looming presence of shadows within our own psyche; a towering debut of cavernous composition, refracted riffage and sonic malaise.

Review: The upcoming eighth and final studio album by Canadian punk and metal rockers Sum 41, Heaven :x: Hell centres on the ultimate duality of their sound. Divided into two parts, the first disc, Heaven, hears a return to the pop punk cant of the band's earlier career, while the Hell-ish second disc reflects their latter-day exploration of heavy metal. Though the name references a dualistic theme, the ultimate goal is the synthesis of the two sounds, showing just how far the band have come in their nearly 30-year career. Lead single 'Landmines', which on the surface of things tends more towards the aforementioned pop punk heaven, captures this tendency, incorporating rapidfire metal fills and deathly vocal snarls.

It of course accompanies the feature film adaptation of the renowned Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series. Building upon the success of that TV anime which aired from October 2002, the film delves deeper into the Cosmic Era, offering a fresh narrative set in C.E. 75. With contributions from the original TV anime team and music composed by Toshihiko Sahashi, fans enjoyed the seamless transition from the small screen to the big screen. The analogue version of the soundtrack, presented on a stunning three-disc set of coloured vinyl, adds a touch of luxury to this cinematic experience.

Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

Review: The highly anticipated debut full-length from Oakland, California esoteric doomgazers Leaving, melds classic psychedelic proto-doom metal with the swelling bombast and mercurial pace of post-rock and shoegaze. Since forming in 2021, the collective made up of seasoned veterans in their own realms from acts such as Graves At Sea, Lycus, Noothgrush, Amber Asylum, and Funerary, have been hard at work crafting the type of menacing melancholy popularised by modern grungegaze peers in Whirr, Cloakroom or Nothing, yet fused to the blues-laden macabre retro doom of Reverend Bizarre and Saint Vitus. Delving into harrowing moments of desolation and the war with the darkness within ourselves, emboldened by meandering, lengthy dirges that offer shimmering sonics and triumphant crescendos both warming and oppressive, Liminal is the type of insidious opus that requires repeat attentive listens before utterly revealing itself.

It is a record that takes you deep into intricate rhythms and soulful melodies all of which make for immersive atmospheres that take you into all new realms. Each track is a testament to Jamal's musical prowess and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz which his what has made it such a timeless gem amongst jazz heads.

Review: Magick Brother & Mystic Sister took inspiration for their name from a serial Gong album, and sure enough this Barcelona-based four-piece know exactly where they're aiming with their heavily psychedelic, tripped-out strain of cosmic rock. Following on from their self-titled debut, now the band are back with the first instalment of a two-part album release called Tarot - so far, so mystic. The groove on 'The Hierophant' is a great place to start in diving into the intoxicating headspace of the band, where some outernational instrumentation collides with the propulsive krautrock-informed rhythm section and the Canterbury scene's affinity for funk. It's a visceral trip no self-respecting pscyhonaut should be without.

Review: Jeff Mills continues to gift us some utterly astounding house-tempered work from the Millsart project on this latest 12". Neo Tantric Parts draws from the deep well of Millsart archives, with 'Tear Drop Nebula' especially benefitting from a new mix as it shuffles percussion and vibraphone chimes around microtonal cascades which give the music a particularly giddy quality. 'The Phonetic World' has a punchy presence without losing that lighter style Mills adopts under this alias, while 'Neptunian Landing' heads into spookier territory with some faithful 909 hats for guidance. Watch out for 'Unidentified' though, a truly tweaked-out slice of space lounge gear for watching the walls of you mind melt after one too many solar flares.

Review: Arutani's third album Who We Used To Be is a meditation on times passed and alternate lives lost, filtered through the decorative lenses of deep, minimal, tech and dub. As if to paint a character portrait of the artist himself, this is a measured, calm, light, mindful and modest album, replete with bulging concave chord undulations and synaptic percussive snaps for balance. Everything from electro's usual dotted rhythmic pattern to progressive house's woodblocky felicities are checked off here, plus the glissando'ing lead on 'In Case You Wondered What I've Been Doing' is a special highlight.

Review: The clandestine Xenia Reaper comes forth with their debut LP proper, a sprawling anthology of pulsating, sensual neu-ambient beatdowns for club and spa play. Across nine tracks, they traverse terrain from pensive, windswept chordscapes underpinned by resonant carpets of sub, to pummelling, stroboscopic workouts a la Basic Channel. It's a super accomplished tripp, full of pleasure centre-probing sonic shrapnel, waterlogged voices, saccharine synthwork and skittering percussion. A perfect soundtrack for the advent of longer evenings and resurgence of chlorophyll.

Ceremonies Of Consolidation offers up a beastly compilation of the three sonically disparate EPs the band would release throughout 2018 in the run-up to their fifth album Magus, which then morphed the differing styles into one cohesive cacophony. Compiling the ambient drone The House Primordial EP, the acoustic Inconsolable EP and finally, the heaving grunge Rhea Sylvia EP onto three individual LPs along with a bonus 10" of previously unreleased acoustic demos from the Rhea Sylvia sessions, this is a weighty, monolithic fan service collection. Limited to only 300 copies, be fast before you end up seeing these flipped on Discogs for thrice the price.

Review: Florian Meindl has assembled a captivating ensemble of musicians for a remix project that breathes new life into his works. The label Flash has released nine invigorating techno tracks that showcase the limitless creativity of these artists. U Umwelt's remix of 'Assembly Line' is a relentless and percussive techno assault, while Volpe's interpretation of 'Synthetic Memories' charms with its infectious tech house groove and melodic flair. Other great examples are Beau Didier, who injects 'Reconstruct' with a wicked loop that propels the track forward, while Decka's 'Chord Raider' remix exudes a sinister and heavy atmosphere that culminates in a banging crescendo. Schott's remix of 'Metaphysics' transports listeners to an eerie, sci-fi realm with its industrial undertones, while Garb's 'Galaxy Storm' remix ascends to a melodic techno and trance peak time that leaves an unforgettable impression. This remix album is a testament to the versatility of Meindl's original compositions and the talent of the artists who have reimagined them. It is a must-listen for fans of techno and a compelling demonstration of how collaboration can elevate musical boundaries.

Review: Casio City Rockers offers a glimpse into the eclectic mind of Brother Lee, unearthing a treasure trove of musical fragments captured on various devices. Despite the makeshift nature of its creation, the album exudes a raw charm and originality. Lee's sonic experiments blend elements of funk, psychedelia, and lo-fi soul, creating a captivating soundscape that's simultaneously nostalgic and refreshingly unconventional. The album's title track epitomizes this fusion, effortlessly merging Casio's signature sound with the pulsating energy of acid house. Lee's disregard for sentimentality has allowed him to craft a truly unique and unfiltered sonic experience, inviting listeners to embrace the imperfect beauty of his creative process. If you are looking for something unique, look no further than this.

Review: Tobias Freund has become one of the most well-respected techno artists in the last 15 years, releasing on a successiom of important labels like Ostgut Ton, Logistic, Mule Musiq and Wagon Repair, to name but a few. His newest release is a full length called Das Neue Elektronische Volkslied and is released on the very hot Danza Tribale, offering an array of strong underground tracks that explore various styles under the techno umbrella. There are hard, dramatic percussion stormers like 'Rated-R' or 'Nuclear Device'. There are powerful and intense builders like 'Perceiver' or ' Rise Of The Robots'. Then you have mysteriously eerie and dark minimal tracks like 'The Continent Of Reason' or 'A Wise Precaution'. Overall, the record is full of commanding high powered darker techno that demands your attention.

Review: This is the first reissue of the much-anticipated compilation gathering together many gems from the Louisiana born singer Bettye Swann. This compilation gathers and enormous 22 tracks from the career to highlight her career. Bettye rose to to acclaim with her 1967 soul classic 'Make Me Yours' which not only climbed to #21 on the Billboard 100 but also became a #1 on the rhythm and blues charts. Once she signed to Capital record a few years later, she had a second top 40 hit with 'Don't Touch Me'. The compilation has so many underrated songs from her career that just didn't get the attention that they deserved - see the excellent 'Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)' and the amazing cover of 'Tell it like it is'. There is so much great music here to discover. This reissue by Music On Vinyl is on 180 gram vinyl complete with insert.

One very desirable addition is the early 90s gem 'Emotional' by Think. This very strong gathering of deep house tracks may be one of the best this year. Act quick and grab a copy.

Review: Cult English electronic duo I Monster aka Sheffield based record producers Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling dropped Neveroddoreven, their second studio album, on 21 July 2003. A little later than first planned, it now gets a special 20th Anniversary re-issue on CD as well as this double gatefold. It incudes the original album plus three new singles and the much loved acoustic version of 'Daydream in Blue' which even if you don't think you know, you will, because ti has been rather ubiquitous in ad campaigns for brands including Ford and Magnum Ice Cream. Also helping to keep this band relevant after all these years was their single 'Who Is She' going viral on TikTok in 2023 and picking up 290M Spotify streams.

Review: Departing the excellent avant-garde/post metal label Svart (who put out 2021's bombastic Black Harvest) in order to sign with Nuclear Blast, who have become a signifier for greatness within the spheres of metallic heft, the third full-length from London's own psychedelic stoner-metal doomsters Green Lung can't help but feel like a seismic achievement before even considering its sonic merit. Tapping deeper into their folkloric musings, whilst drawing on everything from old school doom metal to NWOBHM, with nods to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and classic horror soundtracks, these cuts groove with retro fuzz, heaving riffage and meandering, hypnotic compositions, ultimately resulting in simultaneously their heaviest yet most accessible project to date. Imagine a trippier Mastodon relocated in the British countryside.

Review: Mad About Records officially reissues super rare private press Quintessence's 1981 LP. Surprisingly for the level of talent and production / recording wit that it flaunts, Quintessence was one of many original jazz LPs to remain in private circulation and thus completely wanting of the public ear. Led by Ron Ancrum, with George Sovak, David Gaedeke, Winston Johnson and Steve Muse, the band nonetheless recorded an exceptional slice of artistic pie here, bringing Rhodesy, tritoning sundowners to the then already well-fleshed milieu of 80s jazz, an unmistakably bulbous and gaudy sound to which Quintessence do much justice; our favourite here by far is 'In My Apartment', a tssking blue-jazz suite for boughed double bass and noir piano.

Review: Analog Africa has repressed the highly valued and long since sold-out Congo Funk! Sound Madness From The Shores Of The Mighty Congo River: Kinshasa/Brazzaville 1969-1982. It is a compilation that superbly shows off the raw energy and funkiness of the Congolese rumba scene. This is the country that spawned such as legendary bands as African Jazz, OK Jazz and African Fiesta and it is said that the concert ahead of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman is what really set young hopefully musicians on their paths, after they saw James Brown play live. The story of those artists and the labels they released on in the ensuing years is what is told so well here across four sides of vital wax.

Originally released in 1988, this goth masterpiece and reissued here in form set was released, featuring four bonus tracks for fans to enjoy. Known for their blend of hard rock, goth and psychedelic elements, led by vocalist Carl McCoy's growling, harsh voice adding a heavy edge to the music alongside Tony Pettit on bass, Peter Yates and Paul Wright on guitars and "Nod" Alexander Wright on drums, they create a powerhouse of sound on tracks like 'Chord of Souls' and epic seven minute opener 'Endemoniada'. The album debuted at an impressive number 12 on the UK album charts, solidifying Fields Of The Nephilim's status as pioneers in the goth rock genre along side contemporaries like Sisters of Mercy and The Mission.

Review: What can you say about this amazing album that has not been said before?! Originally released in 1996 and quickly becoming one of the most important pieces in the history of sampled music, its legacy continues to grow while Shadow remains the archetypal example of a crate digging producer. Everything from jazz, spoken word, hip-hop and more was sampled into this cornucopia of sound - in many ways the zenith of the impressive output of James Lavelle's revered Mo''Wax label - and you wouldn't be surprised if it ended up in the Smithsonian for what it has accomplished and meant to the scene.

Review: Mount Kimbie demonstrate their expansive ability to metamorphose over time, with the Sunset Violent being their first record (the follow up to 2022's MK 3.5: Die Cuts I City Planning) to document their efforts as a quartet, as opposed to the simple duo project of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos. Now with composer Andrea Balency-Bearn and Marc Pell (Good Sad Happy Bad), the project brings an ever-so-slightly more conceptual slant to the mix, with the album centring thematically on the UFO sightings of the Yucca Valley, California, and the interplay between the literal desert in that part of the world, and the figurative desert of London (where the album was completed). As ever, the likes of 'Fishbrain' and 'Boxing' deliver indie-electronic buildups, as driving as they are infectious, mixed with the distinctly sepia-textured moods and performative tastes of London's finest (King Krule among them).

Released in 1966, it features the iconic title track, a top ten hit that encapsulates her sultry and playful style. Another standout is 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),' later made infamous by its inclusion in Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill' films. Sinatra's collaboration with Lee Hazlewood brings a cinematic quality to her songs, creating a haunting and ethereal atmosphere. "How Does That Grab You?" showcases Sinatra's versatility, from the catchy pop melodies to the dramatic ballads, cementing as a legendary performer.

Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: The stylistic moniker of one Marc Dwyer (formerly in collaboration with fellow Sydney scene denizen Rebecca Liston, but now solo), Buzz Kull is an impressively accomplished darkwave and neo-EBM project that's been active since 2010. Returning to the equally esteemed Funeral Party Records, with whom Dwyer has enjoyed a productive relationship for a good while now, New Kind Of Cross delivers yet one more album-length handful of dark, danceable, anti-oppressive, cold-future-ambivalent, hysterical-discursive tracks, manifesting in a uniquely occultic sonic nonagram. Our faves have got to be the climactic 'Existence', on which a pervasive atmosphere of defeatist authoritarian realpolitik abounds - "I've never felt existence outside of this system" - and the title track, which exemplifies Dwyer's preference for beautifully textured, subliminally lo-fi arps and emphatic "eurrghs" abounding in the FX send.

Review: In 2018, three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn returned to classical label-behemoth Deutsche Grammophon (her usual) for an official album of interpretations of J.S. Bach's violin concertos, in collaboration with Jeffery Kahane and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The much-celebrated fiddler laid down a stunning, full rendition of the concertos, all recorded at the Colburn School Of Performing Arts and which added to her huge repertoire. This stealth reissue from the classical music giant bolsters Hahn's rep once more.

Review: New adventure video game Dordogne sees the player immerse themselves in a unique narrative universe, embarking on a vibrant journey intent on awakening the senses and evoking warm memories. This complementary soundtrack by the Supernaive brothers effortlessly evokes said oscillation between melancholy and wonder. As we play as Mimi, exploring the precious recollections of childhood and the times shared with her late grandmother, a soothingly subdued soundtrack arrests the ears as we retrace those steps. With past meeting present and adult choices confronted, the French sibling duo, normally specialists in lounge pop and downtempo electronica, do thorough justice to the game's sentimental and familial themes.

Review: Berlin-based, Canada-born experimenter Aidan Baker tinkers often with slowcore, drone, and avant-garde darkness, both solo and with such groups as Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble and WERL. His latest, Songs Of Undoing, aims at more of a "deconstructed" grunge/slowcore palette, stripping almost every facet of the style back to reveal an impressively unpolished backbone. Musings on reckoning, alienation, and ruination resound across an album of doomy quietude - never going so far as to indulge huge cathartic moments and instead preferring to rest in waveringly gothic, ruminatory recesses.

Review: The amusingly named Lebanese free improvisation trio A Trio, formed in 2002 by Mazen Kerbaj Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin, are considered by some to be the oldest and most active free improv group in the Arab world. With such status comes ever-more impetus to release new music; The Binding Third is their first full-length LP since 2014, recorded live at the Sound Disobedience Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2019. Composed of two long-form pieces, we hear the trumpeter, reed player and double bassist respectively make use of extended and prepared techniques, in turn to create dizzying drones, textures, and noises that challenge the conventional roles of their instruments. The music is intense, dynamic, and unpredictable, reflecting the trio's 20+ years of experience and experimentation.

Review: With their second album Wille, the Vincent Meissner Trio prove that young, complex, crisp piano trio jazz need not originate from the USA, England or Scandinavia, like many famous current representatives. This is totally contemporary music unifying heart and brain, whether in the form of original compositions or re-constructions of Whitney Houston, Louis Cole or The Beatles. Released as part of Act's Young German Jazz series, Meissner's talents on the ivories are among just one set of chops to be heralded by the label of late; expect much more prodigal fun to come.

Review: Jeff Mills throws a spaghettifying curveball with latest EP ‘The Trip’. Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, ‘The Trip’ has been routinely billed as “the world’s first cosmic opera” (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we’d expect nothing less from the Belleville ‘blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in” through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; ‘When Time Stops’ is the track of choice for exploring Mills’ least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Vanitas
Review: Identity Theft is the solo electronic music of Michael Buchanan, commencing in 2011 with the album Night Workers. Having previously released on labels such as Oráculo Records, Treue Um Treue, Record Label Records, and Katabatik, here he continues to astonish with the atmospheric, brooding and liturgical electro opus, Omnia Vitas. Rooted in Düsseldorf-school electro with strong leanings towards the more abstract krautrock origins of the genre, Vanitas continues to flesh out the themes of surveillance and paranoia - themes endemic to his music from the outset - albeit this time he also works in samples culled personally from the posthumous sonic archives of several departed (and unnamed) producer friends.

Review: Henry Mancini's iconic score for The Pink Panther is an amazing example of the power of music to define cinema. Released 60 years ago, the album's unforgettable melodies have become synonymous with the film and its bumbling detective Inspector Clouseau. The catchy 'Pink Panther Theme' alone remains a cultural touchstone, widely recognized and streamed. Mancini's genius infused the score with a whimsical yet sophisticated flair, mirroring the film's comedic tone. The album's Grammy Award-winning success cemented its place in popular culture, earning a well-deserved spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame. The 60th Anniversary Edition celebrates the timeless brilliance of Mancini's Pink Panther score. Pressed on vibrant pink vinyl, it offers a nostalgic reminder of the film's enduring charm and the enduring power of Mancini's musical genius.

Dr.Bird gives us these rare 70s examples of lesser known releases that have a strong cult following but are still being discovered. Delroy Wilson's Sarge from 1977 and Ken Boothe's Unlimited from 1977. Both releases are lauded for each singers soulful voice and music diversity with early Ska and Rocksteady infused into their Reggae sounds. Both releases are hard to get original copies for a reasonable price so having them together is an added treat.

Review: Originally released in 2019, Pachyman's Pachyman In Dub is a labour of love that pays homage to the early days of Jamaican reggae music. Inspired by the legendary Channel One Studios and Roots Radics band, Pachy Garcia set out to recreate the sonic experiments of Scientist, King Tubby, and Lee "Scratch" Perry, with the result being an album that captures the spirit of early dancehall, rub-a-dub, and rockers styles, all hypnotic rhythms, deep basslines, and ethereal melodies. With a focus on dub techniques and a heavy emphasis on the rhythm section, Pachyman In Dub is a must-listen for fans of reggae music.

Review: BODEGA's debut album under Chrysalis Records, Our Brand Could Be YR Life, arrives as a culmination of their indie-rock musings on the encroachment of corporate influence into youth culture. Initially conceived eight years ago, guitarist and vocalist Ben Hozie has described it as a project they have long wanted to undertake. With 15 fantastic tracks, the album delves into various indie-rock subgenres, from dance-punk to shoegaze and psychedelic rock. Reflecting on themes of self-critique and cultural commentary, it offers a diverse sonic landscape, with hints of influences like R.E.M. This vital new collection shows BODEGA's musical evolution and retains their keen observations on contemporary societal shifts.

Review: Vanishing Twin's groundbreaking album 'The Age Of Immunology receives a limited edition pressing on pink and teal vinyl here and it remains an essential exploration of psych-pop futurism that will resonate with fans of Broadcast, Sun Ra, and Ennio Morricone. The album marked the band's debut on Fire Records, and it showcases their innovative spirit. Produced by Lucas in unconventional settings, tracks like 'KRK (At Home In Strange Places)' evoke Sun Ra's 'Lanquidity', while 'You Are Not an Island' and 'Invisible World' exude enchanting lounge and Jean-Claude Vannier vibes. Recorded in abandoned mills and live sets, the album captures a captivating blend of psychedelic soundscape and experimental flair.

Review: Phoenix, Arizona based modern death metal brutalists Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated third full-length Dark Superstition. The first album from the band since 2019's Deserted showcases an embracing of both the hyper-violent grindcore-indebted cuts from their 2021 mini-LP/EP An Unexpected Reality, as well as the brooding doom-metal opus 'Emptiness' that bookended the project. Recorded at God City Studios with Converge guitarist and iconic producer Kurt Ballou, while citing influences from melodic death and gothic metal acts such as In Flames, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, the long gestation period has resulted in the band's most sonically sprawling work to date. Newly signed to Nuclear Blast, the decrepit stage appears to be set for Gatecreeper to finally seize all of their bubbling potential by the horns and throat. Mark our words when we say Dark Superstition will be one of the definitive extreme metal contributions of 2024.

Review: Modern glassy ambient forefronters Motion Ward present their latest masterpiece from two standout centre-stagers on their roster, Ulla Strauss and Ultrafog. Having not collaborated on a full-length record before, the one is billed simply as “two individuals from faraway (journeying) the world together”. "(They) were given many tiny gifts from the surroundings. Then the music came out as a matter of course, as if a thing was being put in its right place.” Sonically, this translates to a pristine, sampledelic blissout, verging on the nascent road-trippy electronic-shoegaze motifs that Motion Ward have found themselves exploring as of late; and echoing the kind of alien ambient guitar-dubs that could recall Fennesz or Bibio, lest they weren’t also mixed up with the kind of contemporary vocal chopups and glassy, aerated refractions that continue to carve out this extended crew’s current noble standing. Our highlights; ‘Lame Mart’, ‘Kind Zo’.

Review: The Belgian modern classical folk band's 12th album is the soundtrack to a series of short, abstract animation films by Rudy Trouve, who also acted as a creative director during the recording process. These took place according to conceptual guide lines set by Trouve. Sometimes the starting point was a play on words or a random chord sequence, sometimes a specific atmosphere, but the playing field was always kept deliberately limited. Hence, the musicians were forced to build a musical structure with minimal means, with the pieces then cut up, sampled, drastically restructured and pasted together again, a method that had been applied earlier on the retrospective album Hineininterpretierung (2017). The result is a work of art that is both visually and musically stunning. The music is often sparse and atmospheric, with a strong emphasis on texture and space, it's hard to categorise but is definitely a unique and captivating album.
