  1. I Believe In Miracles (3:30)
  2. No Nos Pararan (3:45)
  3. Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

  1. They Speak Colour (5:41)
  2. The City (6:03)
  3. The Cull (3:24)
Review: Ron's Reworks, a series of scalpel jobs and lightly beefed-up reworks from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam, has now reached its fourth volume. Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

Review: Boston's A-grade record digger, funk and soul boffin and master edit maker Kon is back with his Gang for this tidy 7" that also features Rick James. It is once again an edit aided by Kon's long time engineer Caserta, with slick, life affirming jazz tinged and super funky production. Soul Supreme is on keys, the knotted bass comes from Xander Vrienten and together they all serve up a real late summer jam that could be 50 years old. The dub is just as delicious on the flip, with more room for the lux and authentic production and very real musicianship to shine through

Review: Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems such as Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' or his own 'Menergy', Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, and the recent Mechanical Fantasy Box. Some Funkettes, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley's early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques.

  1. What's Your Secret? (Bastedos edit) (9:23)
  2. Do You Blow? (5:25)
Review: Felix Dickinson has been donning the Bastedos re-edit alias on and off for 18 years, occasionally popping up with a fresh selection of superb scalpel jobs. Here the Bristol-based veteran delivers two more incendiary rearrangements. The undoubted highlight is A-side 'What's Your Secret (Bastedos Edit)', a near ten-minute rework of a Clavinet-sporting AOR disco epic that moves through waves of spacey grooves, soaring female backing vocals, impassioned blue-eyed lead vocals and more low-slung sections designed to raise temperatures out on the dancefloor. Dickinson changes tack on flipside 'Do You Blow?', successfully dubbing out an oddball chunk of electro-era quirkiness built around a killer bassline, scat vocals, breathy flute solos and body-popping drum machine beats.

Review: Belarus' Iner launches a new label with a strong cast of international names all pushing a deep and distinguished strain of house music for those who want soul and invention in equal measure. Tilman is up first with 'Sweet Dreamer', a mellow, looped up roller. Sune's 'Flutes' takes a breezier approach shaped out by fluttering jazz funk motifs. Yann Polewka celebrates the sweetest Philly strings and some classic vocal licks for a disco-infused burner you can't help but love. Iner himself keeps things loose and organic on the wonderful 'Respectfull Kind Music', while Scruscru goes for a sleek approach to chopped up funky house. That leaves it to Buzz Compass to get heady and hazy with the bass-leaning cuts coursing through 'That Nighter'.

Review: The irrepressible Gamm label knows a thing or two about disco, funk and soul. Yet more irrefutable evidence for that claim comes from this tidy 12" two tracker featuring some lost remixes. 'I'm In Love Dancin' takes source sounds from Arthur Russell's classic 'Is It All Over My Face' and repurposes them with gangling percussive lives, sunny flutes and mad horns to make for something that will shake your body loose. Flip it over for the steamy, sensuous, intense disco stomps of 'Imma Phreak' complete with fame coos and cries and plenty of dance floor clout. Review: During their continuing trawls through Patrick Cowley's archives, Dark Entries has uncovered a string of cover versions that the late, great San Francisco-based producer recorded between 1974 and '77. They've now decided to gather them together on Some Funkettes, a synthesizer-fired set that more than lives up to its title. Perhaps the most headline-grabbing number is a 10-minute re-creation of Donna Summer's Giorgio Moroder-produced electro-disco masterpiece, 'I Feel Love' - a record that Cowley famously remixed, but here re-imagines as a more spacey instrumental workout - but there's plenty elsewhere across the CD that's arguably even better. For proof, check Cowley's colourful synth-funk versions of 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' and 'Do It Any Way You Wanna', and his brilliant interpretations of Herbie Hancock's 'Chameleon' (here re-named 'Spiked Punch').

Review: For their latest trick, Austrian imprint Record Shack has decided to breathe new life into a sought-after slab of obscure 1979 soul sweetness, Gregory Jolly's 'What 'Em Doing Is My Business'. You'll find the original version - a fine fusion of Clavinet and Hammond-splashed cosmic soul blessed with funky bottom-end and a superb lead vocal from Mr Jolly - on the flip, with Altroy & Jr's "Rhythmic Treatment" on the A. It's a slightly weightier and heavier treatment, with the duo adding subtle new percussion while re-editing key sections. While rather good - and definitely more danceable - it's not really radically different to the must must-have original mix.

First up is this sublime cover of William DeVaughn's evergreen, much-covered soul classic 'Be Thankful For What You Got'. Review: To close the 3 EP reissue series of Neville King and Lee Laing's King & City label, the all female group Charisma are presented with their summer infused Lovers cut, Everything Is Fine.

Three Lewisham friends, Angela Richardson on lead vocals, with Geselle and Janie backing, were active from 1982 to 1990, but are really remembered for the early recordings made with Neville King. Their debut, Everything Is Fine rides the Lovers sound at its peak. Written with One Blood's Lloyd Robinson, with the rest of band of Robinson brothers providing the rhythm section, this is pure South London sound system music.

Recorded again at TMC (Tooting Music Centre) Recording Studios - working alongside the likes of Dillinger, Tradition and New Musik - Everything Is Fine rides a beautiful soul reggae rhythm as Trevor (Drums) and Lloyd (Bass) Robinson set the foundations, while One Blood provide the Dub mix.

A true love's lament, a song of hope, serenity and pure vibes. Label head Chuggy slides behind the mixing desk for an extended Discomix that stretches, loops and dubs the vocal and dub back forth, to close a glimpse at this uniquely British phenomenon, taking reggae closer to it's heart and soul.

There are beats to be enjoyed on 'Blues 909', but you've never heard the totemic techno machine sound as smooth and mellow as it does right here.

The fourth instalment is another belter opened up by the boss himself in Disco Blend form. He serves up libidinous synths and steamy vocals that get you on your toes and then sinks into a smooth and seductive deep house mould for his remix of Mistura's 'Smile. Winter might be coming to us in the UK, but not in this artist's world, because Alldaydream is another exquisite musical getaway. The warm and humid 'Super Barrio' rolls on gentle drums and is awash with dreamy pads, while 'Above' features some neat piano playing and grown up grooves with plenty of Spanish overtones. Review: The Masaala label are laying claim to a unique curio from the '90s here, unearthing the forgotten sounds of Cutmaster Singh from Leicester. This unsung DJ legend was amongst those trying to fuse acid house and bhangra, and on this 12" we're treated to a selection of edits that do a mighty fine job of crossing the cultural divide to bring the infectious energy of Indian music into a dancefloor context. First up is a dubplate from 1994 titled 'Acid Agah', which rides a bubbling 303 and resplendent strings to create a jaw-dropping showpiece. 'Rani' is steeped in bashy '80s drums and more of that lysergic throbbing, offset by a stunning female vocal, while 'Nachdi Drums' unsurprisingly leans in hard on percussion to whip up a frenetic energy that is as much techno as it is bhangra. 'Balle Shava' takes things back to a kind of new beat freakiness which will appeal to old-skool diggers looking for something spicy in their sets.

Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist C Scott. "Climb On" is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while "Hands Free" provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. Disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. "Stuttering" demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning FX still capturing that classic good-time mood, while "At Ease" finishes on a life-affirming canter of Rhodes led celebration.

Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. Happily, it's well worth the reissue treatment, particularly the breezy, colourful and deliciously groovy opener "Mabsouta", a bubbly and breathy synth-pop cover of Suzanne Vega classic "Tom's Diner" that wraps Simone's Egyptian vocals and sparkling pianos around a stunning synth bassline. It sees them flip a thoroughly obscure modern soul seven-inch originally released in 1980 on a "tiny local label" in the U.S called Shore Records. It was, and remains, the sole release by the mysterious E.S Funk. A-side 'Funny Feeling' offers a delicious fusion of floor-friendly grooves - check, in particular, the crunchy, snare-heavy beat - immaculately played and produced instrumentation and a catchy chorus. 'Shake Your Body (At The Disco)' is an altogether funkier, club-focused affair whose most prominent features are a rubbery slap-bass line, dancer-friendly drum-breaks and horn and synth lines that seem to be playfully sparring with each other.

Review: Patrick Adams was responsible for producing tons of terrific disco records during the late 1970s and early '80s, but few are quite as dizzyingly good as Cloud One's 1976 cut 'Atmosphere Strut'. Created by Adams with the assistance of regular collaborator Peter Brown, the 9-minute plus track is notable for the extensive use of superbly spacey synthesizer lines, an infectious deep disco groove and a typically head-in-the-clouds lead vocal from Margo Williams. This reissue naturally offers-up Adams' original, must-have 12" club mix, but also a brand-new re-edit from disco rework specialist KON. He lengthens the intro, beefs up the bass and makes crafty use of some improvised vocals from Adams and Williams that were previously buried on the multi-track master tapes.

This third round of tripped-out dancefloor delights draws on a global panoply of sounds once again, starting in a mystical mood with "Kongo Bina" before firing up the party stove with "Roots & Culture" and slapping down a heavyweight chug on the fierce n' slow "Flatline". There's plenty more fireballs on the B-side, not least the looped-up funk of "Satan (Dub)" and the heavy hitting percussion of "Riddim Of Inari (Tribal Mix)". "Anthems" finishes the final volume of this valuable reissue series on a stirring, melancholic note with powerful choral voices and sentimental melodic refrains - the perfect emotional set closer.

  1. Tell Me Baby (3:54)
  2. I Remember (4:01)
Review: Back in June, a copy of Akira Freeze's hitherto unknown single 'Tell Me Baby' appeared on an online auction site and ended up selling for well over $2,000. It sparked Athens of the North boss Euan Fryer into action, as he tracked down the rights to the record in order to reissue it. Little information exists about the record, but we can confirm that it is utterly beguiling. A-side 'Tell Me Baby' is superb, with slick, soulful lead vocals rising above squelchy synth-bass, spacey chords, luscious electronic melodies, twinkling keyboard solos and unfussy drums. Flipside 'I Remember', an even more intergalactic-sounding affair, is arguably even better, making this a very desirable 45.

  1. Aargh Money (8:39)
  2. Little Looks (5:46)
Review: After a strong start from Haners, the second drop on Misadventures steps once again into the neon-lit alleyway of finest Italo disco, with all the seductive sass you could ever wish for in a party 12". On the A-side, 'Aargh Money' works around a seriously funked-up rhythm section and a choir extolling the virtues of working together. It's bombastic and elastic, just the right thing to get the limbs greased up for a heated hoedown. 'Little Looks' takes things rougher and tougher, with one of those Italo basslines so nasty it borders on proto-acid. The vocals are divine here too - smouldering come hither lines that amp up the intensity of the track to 11.

  3. TW Funkmasters - "Love Money" (Joey Negro dubwise Revision) (7:33)
  4. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "Far Beyond" (6:37)
Review: Following on from the bumper compilation on Z Records of all the label's greatest hist, boss man Joey Negro offers up a third volume of 12"s. He goes first with a nice loose mix of 'Love Hangover' that bumps in all the right places. Opolopo's 'Get On Up' is a dazzling cut with cosmic chords and long legged drums that move you to your core, then Joey is back with a slick dubwise version of the classic TW Funkmasters cut 'Love Money.' Last of all, 'Far Beyond' is a reflective closer with far-sighted chords and a late night glow.

  1. Sunny Love (5:15)
  2. Dance Of Fire (5:07)
Review: NYC-based Brit Todd Worsnips has previous form when it comes to offering up must-check re-edits and reworks, though more often than not his selected source material is rooted in R&B and hip-hop rather than disco or boogie. He's flipped the script a little on Sunfire Edits by successfully taking his scalpel to vintage soul and jazz-funk jams. A-side 'Sunny Love' delivers a largely instrumental revision of Yambu classic 'Sunny', with Snips choosing that showcase the track's numerous all-action instrumental sections before gently beefing up the beats and introducing the chorus vocals. 'Dance of Fire' sees him rearranging Al Green gem 'Full of Fire', a fiery, funk-fuelled 1970s soul number given a contemporary spin courtesy of some subtly tooled-up drums and the producer's wise focus on the track's most energetic moments.

Review: Munir straps in for a full throttle ride through some brilliantly cosmic disco grooves here, with opener 'Racer' being a super cool and super smooth ride on glossy arps and far-sighted pads that will elevate anyone's sprits. 'Pit Stop' is a more broken journey on rugged drums and rickety hits and then 'Finish Line' smooths out once more and goes intergalactic. 'Interlinked' is the explosive melodic closer, with tough arps and pixelated pads all adding up to a thrilling and hi NRG ride that is part retro, part futuristic, fully awesome.

Review: The Rollover Edit series from Anything Goes reaches volume number 5 with four more fantastic reworks that cover plenty of ground. Lele Sacchi serves up a a folk and Americana tinged version of 'Enzo' that is new age and organic. Jack Torsani takes 'Giorgia' into disco territory with big choruses and crashing hits all forming a strident groove while 'Espresso' delivers a direct caffeine hit in rolling disco form. The best might be saved for last, though, because 'The Duke Arrives (Pyramiden rework)' is a high speed police chase with funky bass and bristling grooves that are alive with great samples.

Review: Demi Riquisimo's burgeoning label Semi Delicious has another gem on its hands here. Various artists contribute but all take you on a nostalgic trip back in time to a period when disco was in its heyday and house music barely had its name. Importantly, the early realness and roughness of those genres is captured too - nothing here is too shiny or polished, but that's not to say that are plenty of dazzling arps, crystalline basslines and hands in the air grooves that will make you want to get up to get down. Label boss Demi delivers 'Judy' to kick off and from that point on the EP is pure class.

Review: Few disco and boogie DJs can boast record collections deeper than the one owned by Superior Elevation chief Tom Noble. It's this access to obscure, little-known gems that makes his regular re-edit releases so darn checkable. You'll find plenty dusty, rare revisions on the Brooklyn-based digger's latest EP for Razor 'N' Tape. Exhibit A: the low-slung, dub disco-goes-Latino flex of "They Came To New York", which exhibits a similar sonic space to early '80s heroes Konk. Also impressive is the high octane, jazz guitar-powered Afro-disco brilliance of "Disco Massamba", and "Parang-A-Teng", a chant-along tropical disco workout rich in heavy bass, delay-laden piano stabs and woozy female vocals. We haven't a Scooby what records he's been playing around with, but the resultant reworks are ace.

Review: Super Spicy is a new Mexican label committing some serious heaters to wax. Helmed by Monsieur Von Pratt, the label boss himself sets the tone with opening track 'Forever Funk' on this various artists 12". The vibe is clear from the outset - classic disco-flavoured house music with oodles of soul and good vibes by the bucketload. Igor Gonya & Crack D get busy with the filters on 'Two-Piece Orchestra' and The Funk District take a more delicate edit approach to stomping peak-time burner 'Watcha Gonna Do'. Paul Older's 'Love' is the perfect swooning closer to the record, romantic and triumphant in equal measure for a proper hand-waving release of energy.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the fruitful early '90s exploits of The New Morning, a Munich-based crew who took their lead from the Afro-Cosmic scene pioneered in Northern Italy by DJs like Danielle Baldelli and Beppe Loda. On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.
