Review: Blind Prophet & Ishan Sound come together for their first pan-atlantic collaboration here in what is a fine return to the ZamZam label. The pair first met in Portland in 2019 and so it's good to finally have some sounds to get stuck into from their meeting of minds. 'The Labyrinth' kicks off with hefty and stepping drum rhythms that are overlaid by bright synth lines and mystic flutes. The interloping melodies and a menacing bassline finish it in style. On the flip, things get much more dark with 'Minotaur Dub' which is a shadowy world of refracting drums and oodles of reverb and echo. There is a predatory sense to the rhythm that never lets up as fizzing bass pries every deep into the dead of night.

Review: 'Love Story' is one of the most classic tunes in all of house music. It was written by Layo & Buschwaka who heard the original 'Finally' by Kings of Tomorrow and wanted to tweak it to their own ends so mashed it up with further samples from Dave, Nina Simone and Tati Quebra-Barraco. It's a rousing, heartwarming dancefloor trip of the highest order and who better to remix it than the always on fire Paul Woolford. Review: Bohm is next up to bring his own minimal and tech house perspective to X Masters and does so with a stripped back yet effective style across a quartet of real bumpers. 'Land Of Lost' kick off with a bobbling bassline and old school 90s house chords that bring some intrigue. Review: Richard Roberts and Andrew Harber kicked off Letherette back in 2008, soon signing to Ninja Tune and Ho Tep before settling into a steady groove with their own label Wulf. That's where they return to for this short and sweet 7", digging into their track 'Woop Baby' for an extended mix trip on the A-side. It's a choppy, funkified joint with low-slung bass and diced up soul vocals which will get any downtempo situation locked in hard. Review: Robot Says A is a stunning EP that showcases the dub techno skills of Jukka Hanninen aka TM Shuffle, a Finnish producer who has been making waves in the scene since 2012. The four tracks on this vinyl are all deep and atmospheric, with lush pads, subtle melodies and crisp rhythms. 'Moonset' is a dreamy and hypnotic track with a soothing vocal sample and a warm bassline, followed by the more upbeat Infinity' an energetic track with a catchy synth hook and a driving groove. Review: If you had to make a list of the top 10 Paradise Garage classics, Taana Gardner's pitched-down, Larry Levan-mixed "Heartbeat" would come somewhere near the top of the list. Here the slow disco classic gets the re-edit treatment courtesy of Japanese DJ/producer Diguma (aka MURO ) on a tidy 7" single. First up on side A is the "Club Edit", a multi-track revision (we think) that cannily layers Gardner's vocals and the key synth parts over the original version's killer groove. The flipside "Party Edit" strips back the vocal to just a few key phrases, focusing instead on showcasing various instrument solos buried in Levan's epic original mix.Very limited and likely Juno is one of the few stores outside of Japan to stock this 45

Review: The Pimpala West Coast Classics series does exactly what it says on the label, delivering tidy 7" singles featuring new edits of much-loved 90s West Coast hip-hop gems. This time round, the scalpel fiend at the controls is Ronnie Frazzle. He first turns his attention to Snoop's Dr Dre-produced mega-hit 'Gin & Juice', a delightfully laid-back 1993 number that's often cited as one of the finest moments of hip-hop's "golden era". Over on the flip it's all about DJ Quik's 1992 Profile Records single 'Jus Lyke Compton', an even more laid-back and groovy affair that pays tribute to the notorious LA neighbourhood that became the focal point of the enormous "gangsta" hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

Review: Carl Finlow really is the electro gift that keeps on giving. It seems like he drops new music on a near-weekly basis and it never dips in quality. This time he is on the We're Going Deep label and his music-making machines are in fine fettle. 'Equi' opens up with a sense of caution - the nimble drums and chrome-plated synths keeping you on edge, while 'Aether' unfurls into a widescreen and laid-back electro journey to the stars. There is more menace and bite to 'Affinity' with its superbly reverb-enriched kicks and 'Septagon' again cuts loose on playful melodic sequences.

Review: We're Going Back returns to follow up its assured first release with a second 12", this time from Troy Anderson who shows himself to be a designer of some super stylish deep techno. 'Pulse Widthin' is dubby, widescreen and rolling with fizzing synths hanging in the air over prickly drums. There is a quieter, more sparse atmosphere to 'Dimode Ice' with its wispy pads and rolling kicks and then things ate off on 'FM Machine' - a minimal and deep rhythm with curious leads and deep space mystery before 'Doughnut Troll' gets more dark and menacing. Review: Given the anger in the United States surrounding the antics of President Trump, it was almost inevitable that we'd see a cover version of Roy C Hammond and the Honey Drippers' Nixon-era funk bomb "Impeach The President" at some point. It's a great cover, too, with Fysah Thomas providing a sassy, venomous lead vocal over a fine, horns-and-drumbreaks-heavy funk backing track courtesy of backing band The Get Down Underground. On the flip they completely re-build the track, re-casting it as an authentic dub reggae workout complete with delay-laden vocal and horn snippets and an all new rhythm track. It's rather brilliant all told and arguably even better than the A-side version.

Review: Ghanaian/UK outfit Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon won plenty of fans with the first two albums Kalba and Small Small now return with this seven track opus. It explores the traditional West African roots of their sound but also adds some freshness in the form of Birituro's xylophone as well as Sonny Johns' folky touches and the powerful vocals of Ghanaian songstress Wiyaala. You might well have already heard some of this on 6Music and will likely hear much more because it is hugely appealing and accessible music with devastating soul.

Review: Long before Karen was a universally accepted epithet for entitled middle-class white woman, there was Karenn, an uncompromising techno duo who do artful things with menacing noise. Pariah and Blawan have been on and off making music together since first launching this project in 2011 but whenever they do, it's worth hearing. This one on Voam is another case in point: 'Feeling Horizontal' is a monstrous and ghoulish stomper with twisted vocal darkness, while 'Happy Birthday' is a more lithe and bouncy cut with rubbing low ends and zippy synth texture. 'From Hunk To Husk' carries on the brutalist approach with more intense voices, bass and drums, and 'When Lutes Were A Thing' is a brain-bogging mix of sludgy sounds, spangled percussion and metallic surfaces.

Review: Yse Saint Laur'ant makes wonky, left-of-centre sounds for proper underground parties. He's done so for years, and now returns with more of his raw and inventive disco on the sought-after Vinyl Only label. Opener 'Bad Company' pairs visceral arps with glossy pads and soulful vocal, which is stripped away from the 'Better Company' version. On the flipside, 'Don't Look Back' is a more freewheeling and funky feel, with silky basslines and hip swing claps under buttery vocals. Last of all is a classic chug-disco gem. 'Foreign Love' goes slow, with crashing hits and languid bass all topped off by a yearning female vocal that slowly but surely rises into euphoria.

Review: No, don't worry, Gove and Boris haven't found their way into cosmic disco or twisted acid house....The Conservatives were a brief project for Dutchmen John Scheffer (aka Intergalactic Gary) and Unit Moebius pioneer Ferenc van der Sluijs (aka I-F) around the early 2000s. "Loneliness" was their only single and it still sounds beautiful 13 years later. "Loneliness" is a chunky but altogether trippy slice of what we would now call disco but just called house back then while I-F and Alden Tyrell's remix comes with much more 303 crunch. Well matured and still highly relevant.

Review: Released back in 1996, Test Pilot Vol 1 has remained a highlight of the Viewlexx label ever since and has been one of those records that command regular calls for a repress. Kudos to I-F then for finally heeding these shouts and presenting a remastered edition for the masses. Review: It's been 22 years since the release of I-F's razor-sharp Dutch electro anthem, "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass". Given the upsurge in interest in electro of late, it's little surprise to see the man himself offering up this reissue, which is focused around two previously digital-only revisions that first landed back in 2010. This time round, it comes accompanied by both a vocoder-free Instrumental take and "Pong's Run", a lesser-known collaboration with Intergalactic Gary that's slow, spacey, out-there and thoroughly intoxicating.

Like playful blueprints for some godforsaken sonic Von Neumann machine, tracks like 'Elements & Space' and 'The ELKA Experiment' combine emotion and surrealism with such force and skill that it quite convincingly recalls the human feeling of panic as an analog-machinic-army takes on a mind of its own. Our fave is the janky-ambient cut 'Remodel', which proves said sonic army has the capacity to shapeshift on the nanoparticular level. Freaky!
