  4. Double Exposure - "Everyman" (Joey Negro's Salsoul Strut) (7:18)
Review: The latest volume in Z Records' essential "Attack The Dancefloor" 12" series draws together some killer recent rubs by Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro. He first delivers a "Re-Organised Master Mix" of the O'Jays' 80s electrofunk sing-along "Put Our Heads Together", wisely emphasizing the vocals and killer synthesizer motifs, before offering up an "extended rebuild" of his classic Doug Willis cut "Dancin' 2020" that smothers a soaring disco track with spacey synth solos and jaunty pianos. Side B sports an organ-heavy "In Full Swing" remix of Sunkids and Chance's U.S garage classic "Rescue Me", as well a scene-stealing rework of Double Exposure's Salsoul classic "Everyman". While the whole EP is impressive, the latter is particularly inspired.

  4. Drowning (3:48)
Review: "Remember when you said / My love was like the rain / Not the sweet sound after the drought / But the pain of it hard on your back in the storm." Lapsley's return to the release schedule is thought provoking stuff. Leading on the four tracks here, "My Love Love Was Like The Rain" tackles the confusion and uncertainties that define adult relationships, the way we are attracted to those we don't understand and how, in turn, preconceptions direct the behaviour of that mysterious other. Intimate electronic pop which is followed by the stepping, garage-tinted "Eve", the lo-fi piano downtempo joy of "Ligne 3", with its looped lyrics on letting go, and, finally, "Drowning", the opening drums like the beat of a damaged heart before the rhythm gets into gear.

Lovers of vinyl culture and "epic dialogue of cinema's yesteryear" they mix up those influences with hip hop and reggae into fresh new forms. This new EP - "Golden Nuggets" - in collaboration with the Jamaican Skarra Mucci aka the "Dancehall President", offers crisp digi dub, UK funky drum patterns and plenty of synthesised bass to get your party pumping, all with some natty vocal deliveries, odes to weed and plenty of praise given to jah.

Review: Grauzone's 1980 cut "Raum" has long been an overlooked gem - a heavyweight, dancefloor-centric post-punk disco cut that was previously hidden away on a hard-to-find compilation. Thankfully WRWTFWW Records has decided to give it a single release, accompanying the re-mastered original - a killer blend of spacey electronic pulses, punk-funk bass, snaking sax lines and electronic pulses - with some brilliant new remixes. The standout rework comes from Naum Gabo, who joined forces with Liquid Liquid man Dennis Young to deliver a percussive, low-slung take rich in fuzzy guitars, jaunty electronic melodies and breathless male vocals. The Ata Extended Mix, which opts for a more dubbed-out sound, more picturesque melodies and echo-laden guitars, is also rather special.

Dub
  1. Track 1 (3:12)
  2. Track 2 (2:59)
  3. Track 3 (3:07)
  4. Track 4 (3:05)
Review: Frenchman Nicolas Molina is Worldwide Zen, a producer with a leftfield and distinctly electronic take on dub and reggae on his own eponymous label for this latest project of his, which comes after years releasing as Geena on Antinote. "Earlier Heaven" is his one and only EP of the year and comes on a screen-printed 10": Side-A features the tropical dub and psyched-out pads of "Track 1" while "Track 2" is more summery and zoned out, with less bass weight and more expansive pads. "Track 3" takes you down a rabbit hole of echo and delay, metallic hits and soupy chords and "Track 4" closes out with urban cinematics and jittery bass. An EP to get well and truly stuck into.

  1. Let It Fall (DJ Spinna Galactic Soul remix) (7:59)
  2. Let It Fall (7:28)
Review: Moulton Records released veteran vocalist Lady Alma's collaboration with the Rainmakers, "Let It Fall", in the summer of 2018 as a digital-only single. DJ Spinna thought that it should make it out on wax, so he's snapped up their original version and reissued it on his label Wonderwax. You'll find that original mix - a wonderfully warm, dreamy and soulful workout that layers twinkling pianos, electronic bass, atmospheric organ chords and her superb vocals over a skipping broken house beat - on the flipside, with Spinna's brand new "Galactic Soul" revision on the A. He gives it a little more galactic flavour via squelchy synth-bass and futuristic electronic motifs, while beefing up the beats for a heavier dancefloor experience. It's a great remix, though we still prefer the smooth and sensual original version.

  3. We Met At The Sun (7:18)
Review: It's been a hot minute since Scott Boutin graced us with his refined strain of electronic disco, but the Roam Recordings main man is back on Whiskey Pickle with more of his shimmering dancefloor delights. The lead synths on "Road To Hana" are pure joy, twinkling and bright like a well-lit disco ball. "6AM Again" switches the focus to some bassier synth lines with a warm Moog-y feeling, and while the name might suggest this is a wind down jam, really this track feels perfect for a smooth warm up too. "We Met At The Sun" completes the set with a house-oriented slant that could sit next to warmer strains of acid as much as Metro Area-esque disco.

Deep House
  1. Humbolt Park (7:42)
  2. I Wonder (7:37)
Review: Since making his debut as Hanna 21 years ago, Warren Harris has delivered a string of inspired, soul-fired deep house and broken beat releases for a clutch of admired labels, most notably Freerange, Sound Signature, Track Mode, Shall Not Fade and Melodies International. Here he makes his first appearance on Alex Attias' Visions Inc. imprint with a strong two-track missive. Like many of his peers have recently done, Harris has decided to doff a cap to jazz-funk on the warm, loose and heady brilliance of A-side "Humbolt Park", whose Herbie Hancock-inspired synths and distinctive drum programming are reminiscent of Kaidi Tatham. If anything, similarly inclined flipside "I Wonder" is even better, something we put down to the quality of his chords and chiming melodies.

Review: "Hyperspace" sees Beck venture further down the pop road, drafting in a wealth of high profile, stadium-filling collaborators to realise what's arguably his most synthesised work to date. Full marks to anyone who, upon blind taste test, immediately jumped to the conclusion this was indeed Beck. Fear not, that's less a result of his iconic and infinitely listenable voice not shining through, and more down to what else is in these arrangements. Working with legendary studio genius Pharrell Williams (who co-produced and co-wrote), you'll also find Coldplay's Chris Martin and Georgia, US rapper and drummer Terrell Hines involved here, amongst others. Together with these names we're taken into a soaring, immersive and glittering world of sophisticated but chart-friendly anthems, from clap-a-long number "Die Waiting", to the epic space-rock closer "Everlasting Nothing".

Review: Vinylmania was a Manhattan record store set up by Charlie Grappone that was one of the first to start selling records as 12" culture took off. It went on to supply Levan, Tony Humphries and many more and played the key part in disseminating early house music. It's now a revived label putting out some of those early pioneering gems once again, and here it is Man Friday, Levan's own production project, in the spotlight. This is exactly the sort of tune you would hear him play at Paradise Garage with a dark bass, dub echo and organs that bring a gospel feel to the stripped back grooves.

Review: As UR continue to revisit some of their finest hours, the Detroit techno powerhouse stops on one of the most life-affirming of all their releases. "Inspiration" is as jovial as anything you can expect to hear from Mad Mike and co., motoring through a heartfelt lead synth line and fist-pumping disco undercarriage in truly anthemic style. "Transition" meanwhile is a freakier number, combining spiritual lyricism with a righteous bump of house dynamics fuelled by those futuristic melodies that define the seminal label. If you haven't felt the soul power of these timeless jams, do yourself a life-changing favour.

Review: German producer Bhed takes charge of the ninth EP on the vital Trusik label. His mastery of ambient, dub, techno depths and bass weight are all present and correct here, never more so than on the fantastic opener "Eighteenhundred". Taking up the whole of one side of wax, it is more than deserving of that indulgence as it slowly trips through floating pads, icy hi hats and supple rhythms that soothe the mind, body and soul. "Apatheia" is a more edgy track which is just as cavernous but has you looking over your shoulder, and closing cut "East" is a pure and dreamy dub beauty.

Review: Best known for their 2000 dancefloor flash "Come Party" - a jazz-wise, bass-heavy romp that still gets heavy rotation - Zero DB had a moderately successful career before disappearing from view in the late 2000s. Here they return with "Party Girl", a fresh revision of their most famous cut that adds a little more percussive heaviness and a touch of dubbiness to an already killer jazz-house cut. There are two additional remixes to enjoy, too: a superb, synth bass-propelled broken beat revision by 4 Hero man Marc Mac and a raucous Fixate rework that re-imagines the cut as a sub-heavy slab of jazzy jungle brilliance. It's worth picking up the record for that remix alone.

Review: There's little subtleties about the Tropical Disco crew's re-edits - think additional house drums, filter sweeps and occasional dub delays - but there's no doubting their effectiveness. If you're still unsure, check the collective's latest EP, the 14th in total. Sartorial steps up first with the rubbery, French Touch style disco-house thrust of "So Much", before Moodena sticks locked-in house beats beneath a deep disco groover on "All Night Long". Arguably even better is Chevals' "Funky With Me", a swinging revision of an organ-sporting boogie era funk wiggler, while Kikko Esse and Emanuele Del Carmine's "Departure" is a trumpet-sporting chunk of Latin deep house brilliance rich in electric piano solos and layered South American percussion.

Get It Poppin' (1-sided hand-stamped 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TRSRS 002. Rel: 11 Dec 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Get It Poppin' (6:16)
Review: Following up their inaugural release "Steady" not long ago, Treasure Series returns with more anonymous artists action on this nifty, single-sided rap bootleg over dusty house beats. Still no word on who the artist is, but this raw and thumping swing-fuelled groove "Get It Poppin'" is sure to bang the party wherever it's played. A mystical, heavy-hitting roller that punches harder than most, and will appeal to fans of Politics Of Dancing, Beste Modus or Hostom - tip!

  5. Monument (7:55)
Review: Time Zero is a brand new label from CYRK together with their friends Flash Fab and Lad Caduceus. It makes the sensible next step for the much loved crew of electronauts and kicks off with this blistering new EP that does not muck about. "Dreamscience" is rugged and physical yet somehow dreamy thanks to the harmonic pads and soaring, pixelated synths. "Automotive" is a restless rubbery beat with smeared pads softening the trip while "CS70" is an all-out sci-fi voyage. The flipside is for dreamers with both "Collateral" and "Monument" offering plenty of pensive electro moods.
