Review: There's no sign of "suspect second album syndrome" on this sophomore set from Brendan "Chymera" Gregoriy's celebrated synthesizer-fired ambient project Merrin Karras. Drawing on his love of 1980s new age and ambient records, as well as a life spent fetishising over electronic hardware, Gregoriy has delivered a set of swelling, slow-burn delights that invite you to share an imaginary journey through the Northwest Passage, a legendary route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans via the Arctic Circle that's only accessible at certain times of the year. While some of the music is undeniably icy, there's genuine sonic warmth too; after all, when you can traverse the passage it's light 24 hours a day. In a word: gorgeous.

  1. Tony Alvon & Belairs - "Sexy Coffee Pot" (3:50)
  2. Stanley Turrentine - "Sister Sanctified" (4:03)
Review: We've run out of ways to describe the Breaks & Beats series of functional, floor-friendly re-edits, though by now everyone should know what to expect, namely light-touch reworks of classic funk and soul jams that extend the drum breaks for easier mixing. The series latest missive begins with a must-have rework of Tony Alvon & The Belairs' "Sexy Coffee Pot", a rare-as-hen's-teeth 1969 B-side that wraps rhythm and blues guitars and firing horn lines around one of the greatest drum breaks of all time. Over on side B it's all about Stanley Turrentine's 1972 jazz-funk gem "Sister Sanctified" (a track that has never before appeared on a seven-inch single, even unofficially) and its attractive fusion of snappy breakbeats, hazy sax riffs and liquid electric piano lines.

Review: Finding and buying original vinyl copies of Moodymann's brilliant second album, 1998's "Mahogany Brown", can be a costly business, so all praise to Peacefrog for offering up this much-needed reissue. Packed to the rafters with classic Kenny Dixon Junior material - see the woozy warmth of "Sunshine", where a children's choir rides a locked-in groove and jazzy electric piano solos, the sample-laden up-tempo bump of "MEANDNJB" and the sublime gospel house workout "Black Sunday" for starters - it's arguably the album that established the Detroit legend's trademark sound once and for all. When it comes to jazz-flecked deep house shot through with references to the history of black American music, there are few - if any - better albums.

Review: Edinburgh's Athens Of The North label is endlessly flawless and this time around they pull together the special lovers rock covers they put out at the end of last year onto a superbly strong 12 track compilation. It arrives just in time for the warmer months and has been curated by Sam Don and overseen by label boss Euan Fryer. Standouts include Christine Lewin's lush take on the heavily sampled "Juicy Fruit" while the lo-fi bliss of Al Charles's "Outstanding" is another one to swell the heart and sooth the soul. For more sentimental moments check Family Love's "Do Me Baby." Overall, though, this is a must buy.

  1. Jazz Thing (video mix) (4:45)
  2. Jazz Thing (Movie mix) (5:03)
Review: Given that Gang Starr recently reformed and jazz is now all the rage, it seems fitting that Mr Bongo has decided to reissue the rare 7" version of the group's 1990 masterpiece "Jazz Thing". It's a wholehearted tribute to the greats of jazz - and the role jazz records have in hip-hop's sample culture - that comes in two distinctively different mixes. On the A-side you'll find the "Video Mix", a bouncy and suitably jazzy DJ Premier production that layers Guru's fine rap flows above loose-limbed drums, smoky horn samples and his own super-tight scratches. Turn to side B for the "Movie Mix" - so-called because it was created for a Spike Lee flick - where Guru's vocal rides improvised horns and an entirely different beat crafted from Kool & The Gang samples.

  1. Mountains (extended mix) (5:26)
  2. Mountains (Danny Krivit remix) (10:25)
Review: Last time out Andreya Triana and The Vision (AKA KON and Ben Westbeech) took us to "Heaven" and back. For their latest single they've asked us to gape in wonder at some suitably sizeable "Mountains". In its original "Extended Mix" form (side A) the track is soulful, slick and seductive, with Triana's superb vocals rising, mountain-like, above a musical panorama rich in dreamy chords, jazz-funk bass, gospel pianos and club-ready beats that sit somewhere between deep house and disco. Danny Krivit is the man at the controls for the flipside remix. He stretches out the track impressively, making a bit more of the spacey synths, guitars and bass while re-framing the track as a soaring slab of piano house brilliance.

Review: The new wave of UK garage continues to yield spectacular results - just cop this sizzling second slab from Rhythm People, which gathers together four producers keeping the flame burning for that sweet late 90s sound. Dirty Secretz have soul by the bucketload, from the sweet organ stabs to the diva vocal woven into "Once Again". Revived Pleasure makes a debut appearance with the cool, shuffling vibe of "D'u Believe", while Soulecta brings a hopped up slice n' dice of 2-step brilliance to Kobe JT's "Free". Dr Shemp's "Pick Myself Up" reaches fever pitch on the "Spreadlove '96 Mix" - a fired up peak time 4x4 belter to lose it to.

Funk
  1. Everybody (4:01)
  2. And Then We Were One (4:47)
Review: Expansion's latest must-check seven-inch mines Roy Ayers' 1983 album "Lots Of Love", a sparkling post-disco set that combined the vibraphonist's usual jazz-funk flavours with colourful synthesizers and genuine boogie flavours. "Everybody" on the A-side is particularly potent; a lolloping synth-boogie head-nodder rich in life-affirming synthesizer squelches, rubbery jazz-funk bass, fluid Ayers vibraphone solos and background vocals that sneakily reference "Everybody Loves The Sunshine". Flipside "And Then We Were One" is if anything even more summery in feel, with mazy synth and vibraphone motifs dancing atop a killer jazz-funk groove. It's a little more up-tempo than the A-side, but arguably a little less addictive.

Review: The legendary Roy Ayers has a wealth of great material to his name but Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 might just be the cream of the crop. It's packed with gold that fuses soul and funk, jazz and disco into a load of killer cuts that never got their own release. There are husky vocal tracks featuring Merry Clayton on "Oh What A Lonely Feeling," "I Really Love You" and "What's the T?", sensual soul stirrers from Carla Vaughn such as "Mystic Voyage" and "Together Forever" and of course liquid synths and rhythm sections underpinning each of the tracks.

  1. Felony (3:18)
  2. Rile 'Em Up (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) (3:29)
Review: The Allergies first double A-side of the year is so strong, we reckon it may well be one of their best singles to date. A-side "Felony" is particularly potent: a hybrid Northern/Southern Soul stomper rich in crunchy drums, heavy bass, punchy horns and heart-aching vocal samples lifted from (we think) an obscure soul record. The production is formidably fuzzy, making it sound like something recorded in Detroit or Memphis in the 1960s rather than cooked up in their studio in 2019. Flipside "Rile 'Em Up" is similarly weighty, though this time they're off on a Latin funk tip with a little help from regular rapper Andy Cooper, soul-stress Marietta Smith, saxophonist Mr Woodnote and a handful of killer boogaloo samples.

Review: According to the oracle that is Whosampled (dot com), Slick Rick's 1988 single "Children's Story" is one of the most sampled hip-hop records of all time. Listening back to this reissue, it's easy to hear why. Based on a killer beat that combines a re-recording of the bassline from Bob James' "Nautilus" with bouncy drums, 8-bit computer game noises and a recurring piano stab, the track shows the British-born rapper storytelling in his uniquely cheeky style. This edition doesn't include the original B-side "Teacher, Teacher" but instead offers another chance to enjoy "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" album cut "The Moment I Feared", a scratch-happy chunk of on-point 1980s NYC hip-hop that boasts another tall tale from the master of narrative rap.

Review: During the heady days of the 2000s and early 20-teens, Sheffield scalpel fiend The Popular People's Front offered up a string of essential re-edit EPs. He's been rather quiet of late though, with this collection of fresh dancefloor "Ammo" marking the Steel City producer's first outing for four years. He opens by applying his touch to a lolloping disco classic (you'll know it when you hear it) before offering up an on-point revision of YMO's "Computer Games" that first surfaced - without being released - back in the 2000s. Over on side B the Sheffield veteran adds a vintage (we think) Elektrons acapella to a dubbed-out, low-slung disco workout (track three), and then goes all weird, electronic and forthright on the bonkers-but-brilliant closing edit.

Review: Given their association with the label over the last few years, it seems fitting that the first artist album on Glitterbox should come from Qwestlife, a disco, boogie and jazz-funk loving duo made up on Andy "Yam Who?" Williams and pal Tom Laroye. "Prophecy" was made with a gaggle of guest musicians and vocalists (think Andre Espeut, Jacqui George, Lady Z and Bobby Saint) and features a slick, retro-futurist blend of original tracks and covers of well-loved but largely overlooked disco classics. The result is a brilliant played and produced set that joyously flits between revivalist disco-soul, synth-heavy boogie, slick nu-disco and jazz-funk. Perhaps the most extraordinary cut is "Fever", a superb chunk of disco-rap featuring none other than Sugarhill Gang and Furious Five members Melle Mel and Scorpio.

Review: Based in Bristol, UK, experimental musician and vocalist Lucy Gooch is certainly a name to keep an eye on right now. While boasting little by way of discography, this being her debut EP which follows the self released 2018 record, 'Sun', she has all the hallmarks of an established synth-y siren. You heard it here first (possibly). Compris-ing five sumptuous tracks that are pared back but, upon closer inspection, incredibly deep and immersive, elements of Bjork and Imogen Heap are audible in the songs here. Warm notes, sensitive, ethereal vocals and a sense of real passion behind the work itself. The likes of 'Rushing' comes close to a sombre choral mood at times, 'There Is A Space In Between' could stand with the best ambient work, while 'Stalag-mites & Helictites' is a hypnotic journey into the inner mind. Or somewhere near.

Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in BBE's 'J-Jazz Masterclass' series of reissues is exceedingly rare. In fact, when it first appeared on Smile Records in 1976, only 100 copies of Hideto Saski-Toshiyuki Sekine Quartet's "Stop Over" were ever produced. The album's rarity is impressive, but it's the quality of the all-acoustic set of hard-bop workouts that makes it an essential purchase. As you might expect, there's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the high-octane rush of opener "Carole's Garden", where dizzying piano solos catch the ear, to the similarly hectic and arguably even more rush-inducing "Stop Over" (a ten minute cut of epic proportions), via the sweet, sparse and contemplative "Soultrane".

It came together over many years, with no real concept or constraints but it has still managed to make a powerful impact despite its spare, lo-fi, ambient vibes. There are heavier, darker tracks like "Inside The Ruins" that are brilliantly bleak, but also thoughtful meditations like the title track, which has some magical piano playing at its core. It's the rays of light amongst the darkness that make this such a beguiling and beautiful listen, and a perfect soundtrack to long lost days at home during lockdown.

Compiled by Ken Hidaka, Tokyo-based Max Essa and Test Pressing co-founder Dr Rob, the set starts with a beautiful and becalmed ambient piece by Yoshio Ojima (the sublime "Sealed") and ends with the lapping waves, vocal harmonies and twinkling pianos of Takashi Kokubo ("Quiet Inlet"). "The Living Daylights" originally came out in 1983, and here we get treated to two alternative mixes from a band who didn't take the transition from live band to studio project lightly. This is angular new wave with dubby undertones at its best. Timothy J Fairplay also steps up on the B side to deliver two choice remixes that vary the intensity from brooding disco dub to lysergic tripper without altering the groove.

Review: The first two volumes in Tone B Nimble's superb, gospel-focused "Soul Is My Salvation" series sold like hot cakes (or, perhaps more accurately in these times, bottles of hand sanitiser), so we're expecting this third volume to fly off the shelves too. On side A you'll find "He Can Do It" by The Gospel Truth, a suitably hard-to-find chunk of gospel-boogie warmth originally released in 1981. The Keith Williams-helmed group add their harmony vocals to a super-sweet backing track rich in cascading saxophone solos, jangly pianos and warm bass. Things heat up on side B, where McKinkey Sandifer takes over with the rare instrumental version of funk-fuelled 1982 gospel-disco-meets-jazz-funk jam "I Am The Vine".

Here he proves our point with another pair of certified dancefloor heaters. On the A-side he takes his scalpel to Q-Tip's typically jazzy and bass-heavy 1999 hip-hop cut "Ride", adding a little more grunt to the bass and beats whilst retaining the essence of the Tribe Called Quest man's superb original version. On the flip he delivers a radically different revision of Rahzel's "Southern Girl", placing Erykah Badu's superb lead vocal atop an entirely different Tribe Called Quest beat. It turns it into a dusty, jazzy, head-nodding treat.

Review: Since first emerging a few years ago, Jamie 3:26 has carved a career out of offering up seriously sweaty scalpel jobs. Here he continues that trend with a new batch of edits of classic Chicago cuts. He begins by brilliantly chopping up BSTC's samba-fired disco-era heater "Venus & Mars", before adding his Midas touch to the squelchy Afro-Cosmic throb of Mighty Science's "The Lesson". His sparse but percussive tweak of Jungle Wonz's "Jungle" and drum machine-heavy revision of Quest's "Mind Games" are both essential, as is his stomping, high-octane, Ron Hardy style take on Braxton Holmes' "Stomps N Shouts". The revision of Chip-E's early house gem "It's House" is suitably sweaty, while the edit of Calendar's disco slammer "Comin' On Strong" is arguably the best of the lot.

It has been reissued a number of times but always sells out fast, and for good reason: it's a beautifully crepuscular, pastoral musical landscape with sustained minimal synths hypnotising you with delicate keys bringing oriental flavours to gently propulsive ambience. It's organic, environmental and new age music with none of the cliches and will bring a smile to you face as well as warmth to your heart. "Glass Chime" is a particularly standout track of real melodic joy, while "Mizue" is gorgeously melancholic.

Review: Common Sense was Began Cekic, a New York artist with a discography that extends to only two singles back in 1980, but that still resonates to this day. Here both of those singles get put together on one reissue by Groovin. "Voices Inside My Head" is a bubbling cut with slapping drums and knotted bass riffs while aloof vocals sing dreamily up top. On the flip, "Just Can't Help Myself (I Really Love You)" is sweeter with its big trumpets and sun kissed vocals oozing a certain beachy charm. As the sun begins to hang around that bit longer, you could wish for no finer disco than this.

Review: In 1979, dub legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry "adopted" a pair of musicians from Zaire who had been left stranded on Jamaica, put them together with his regular session players in the Black Ark studio he later burned down in a fit of psychosis, and recorded an album, "Roots From The Congo". As this fine reissue proves, the resultant music - a vibrant mix of Perry's particular brand of dub reggae and soukous music - was magical and unlike almost anything that had come before. For some reason it was only ever released on small labels in France and Belgium at the time, meaning that original copies are extremely hard to find. This reissue, then, is long overdue. Do yourself a favour and snap them up before they all disappear.

  4. Effortlessness (Benjamin Brunn Chrome Plated Diamonds version) (7:55)
Review: Since it was Area that started the Kimochi Sound revolution just under a decade ago, it seems fitting that the publicity-shy artist has delivered the label's first release of a new decade. There are no new Area tracks here though, but rather a quartet of fresh reworks of classic cuts. Natan H kicks off proceedings with a deep, hypnotic, trippy and undeniably wonky revision of "Dare To Be Different", before Leif weighs in with a deliciously melodious, soft-focus revision of picturesque track "The Face Yours Reminds Me Of". Benjamin Brunn takes over on Side B and delivers two contrasting versions on "Effortlessness": the deep, wayward electro-meets-dub house drowsiness of the "Gold Plated Diamonds" mix and the heady ambient techno brilliance of the "Chrome Plated Diamonds" mix.

Review: They don't come much classier than Claremont 56, a label that deals in famously horizontal sounds that are superbly high quality. Deep88 is an Italian with a loveably analogue sound that is steeped in sunset house vibes. Add the two together and you have a perfect match. The a-side here finds Deep88 turn DJ Rocca and Leo Almunia's "Ever Changing Bubbles" into a lush Ibizan beach scene with sweet yacht rock riffs, warm drums and vocals that add an exotic feel. They're removed on the dub which is even more hypnotic.

Review: Music For Dreams' compilations are rarely less than essential, and this collection of recent Japanese music (2008-2018) is no different. In between, you'll find the Steve Reich-ish marimba movements of Yoshiaki Ochi, the dubbed-out, piano-laden downtempo grooves of Little Tempo, the jazzy Balearic house of Schadaraparr, the sun-kissed dancefloor grooves of Little Big Bee and much more besides. As you'd expect, Hidaka, Essa and Dr Rob's selections are uniformly superb.

Review: Kalahari Oyster Cult tends to prioritize new music, though when boss man Colin Volvert does unearth an overlooked gem he has no hesitation in reissuing it. The "Systems EP", a multi-artist extravaganza that launched obscure Denver label Terraform Records way back in 1995, is one such gem. The A-side boasts a trio of varied but consistently good cuts from ambient techno explorer Red Shift (think acid-fired electro psychedelia, drowsy early morning bliss and picturesque downtempo goodness), while the flipside boasts a track apiece from three different producers. Ether's "Detonator" sounds like peak Meat Beat Manifesto (all razor-sharp acid lines, heavy bass and infectious breaks), Escape Artist's "Rain Eternal" is a languid electronica treat, and Constants Of Nature's "Slow Symmetry Breaking" is a woozy drift through outer space ambient.

Review: One of America's undisputed kings of soul and songwriting Master Weldon gets an AOTN celebration of the highest order as his 1976 classic "I Love You" (written with and featuring Don Blackman) gets a welcome revisit. An ultimately dreamy number, file it alongside Faze O's "Riding High" for the quintessential end-of-night smooch sound. If that's not quite enough, the B is a delicate-yet-rich instrumental cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Stunning. There's really nothing not to like about this.

Review: Rewind to 1975, Brazilian supergroup Azymuth hit their richest creative vein with this self-titled full-length. Just as the band remain so themselves, this is still hugely relevant and ridiculously on-point considering it's 40 years on the clock. Proof can be found on every track from the sedative harmonic charms of the opener "Linha Do Horizonte", the raw slap bass funk, velvet keys and soaring synths on "Seems Like This" and the frenetic, almost techy mentality of "Wait For My Turn". An essential addition to any collection, this would have blown minds to pieces back in 1975.

This is their debut album form the same year and it provides a real insight into the life of gay people at the times. Musically it is a slick and adventurous album with urgent beats, cold wave synths and neat guitar riffs all finished off with the involving vocals of Oldham Jr. For this first reissue, Dark Entries have added two bonus instrumental cuts alongside the original which makes it an essential addition to the ranks of any new wave lover's shelves.

Review: In the past, Memphis has enjoyed plenty of props for its STAX-era soul music, but little attention has been given to the city's output during the "modern soul" era of the late '70s and early 1980s. To put the record straight, Light In The Attic has gathered together 20 mostly obscure and hard to find gems from the previously overlooked scene. There's more highlights than it's possible to list in this review, but our current favourites include the synth-fired squelchiness of Tom Sanders' "I'll Get To That", the kaleidoscopic P-funk of Captain Fantastic and Starr Fleet's "Keep It To Yourself", and J-Phakta's seductive slow jam "Is It Love". This edition also comes with a bonus 7" of Mark Anthony's private press rarity "I'm Just A Boogie Roller".

Review: Back in 2008, Asthmatic Kitty released Lowell Brams debut album, "Music For Insomnia" as part of their "Library Catalog Music" series of instrumental sets. While nominally a solo set, it was in fact co-produced by Brams' stepson, Sufjan Stevens. 12 years on, the pair has decided to join forces once more to deliver another set of emotive, evocative instrumentals. With its stirring synthesized strings, swooping cinematic themes, bold synth melodies, bubbly electronic beats and atmospheric chords, "Aporia" sounds like library music composed to soundtrack grandiose films that had yet to be made. It's lo-fi in tone, but epic in scale. More importantly, the collected compositions - some of which are ambient interludes - are hugely enjoyable.

Her work will move you inside and out thanks to its thoughtfulness and immediacy. The majestic a-side "Rain Dance/Wisdom" is Roy Ayers, Sun Ra, Kamaal Williams all rolled into one. The horns pull you one way while the keys rain down in another. The feathery drums are a perfect pillow to sink into and the mood changes often, and freely. This EP proves that Thackray is one of the most fascinating voices in the current jazz revival.

Review: The Brazilian disco and boogie scene of the late '70s and early '80s has been in the spotlight of late, with several labels releasing celebratory compilations of killer material. Here, Athens of the North get in on the act, re-issuing Painel De Controle's relaxed, jazz-funk influenced jam "Relax", a single B-side and album track originally released in 1979. Like many of the greatest Brazilian disco/boogie records of the period, it's loose, lovely and really rather sumptuous, inviting you to dance while offering a saucer-eyed hug with arms outstretched. Flip for the less celebrated, but no less potent, 1978 cut "Malandrinha", a bossa-tinged number that's almost unfeasibly sunny.

Review: Sheffield's Central Processing Unit's good work continues with a return to the label for Annie Hall. It comes four years after her last and is another sleek electro offering from the future. "Verd Mar" is an edgy affair with glass melodies that keep you in suspense as heavy bass trudges below, but the pace picks up with the superb Detroit electro funk of "D'Un Altre Planeta". The title track gets more into it with its razor edge synths and hall of mirrors effects, before "Promeses De Fusta" closes out with a serene atmosphere that has you gazing far off into the distance.

Review: It's taken a while, but finally Knxwledge has delivered the follow-up to his "official" debut album, 2015's "Hud Dreems". A concept album of sorts - the tall tale behind it being that the beats were created in 1988 by an infant version of our musical hero after he climbed inside an SP-12 sampler and mastered the machine - the set sees Knxwledge sprint through a beat-tape style assortment of short, sweet and often sublime instrumentals that make use of a variety of period samples. Given his track record, it's an impressive album, regardless whether the beats were genuinely made when he was in "Nike diapers" (as the press release amusingly claims) or not.

Review: The worldly wide Far Our label turns its attention to some fascinating house sounds from Ivan Mamao Conti. "Katmandu" is all bendy bass and tropical drums, steamy humidity and sensuous synths. Pablo Valentino flips it into warm and jazzy number for cosy basement clubs that harks back to the 90s, and Jazzanova then layer in plenty of the golden instrumentals and key playing that makes the music come alive. The closing remix is all Moodymann vibes with its rough kicks and claps, funk bass and lived-in aesthetic. This is classy house music from front to back.

"Tamotait" is their sixth studio album and undoubtedly one of the strongest yet. Their sound is undeniably contemporary, with ear-catching electric guitars and electrified versions of more traditional North African instruments being joined by ear-catching group vocals in their native language, traditional rhythms (mostly played on a rock style drum kit) and nods towards Peter Green style electric blues, Turkish psych-rock and even axe-wielding, punky indie-rock.

Review: We've become accustomed to Athens of the North delivering 7" singles packed full of obscure gems. Interestingly, the two tracks here - as great as they are - are relatively easy to come by, both being featured on GQ's overlooked by readily available 1980 album GQ Two. Even so, they're more than worthy of the reissue treatment, with A-side "Lies" - previously re-edited by Theo Parrish for his Ugly Edits series - offering a particularly sweet dose of warm and fuzzy disco/soul fusion. Flispide "Is It Cool" is almost as essential, with soaring horns and a killer bassline combining perfectly with the band's urgent, attractive vocals.
