  14. Week End Millionnaire - "EXIT" (4:44)
Review: A couple of years ago French crate digger Charles Bals invited us to "Club Meduse", an imaginary Riviera club where the music was always obscure, European and decidedly mid-80s. Here he opens the doors once more, delivering an open-air friendly soundtrack heavy on rare private press gems, overlooked beauties and the kind of cuts that most would consider Balearic (even if they may have been more popular in Italy and France). Highlights are plentiful, from the eccentric instrumental of Voyage De Charme's fretless bass-powered "Hotel Des Savanes" and the soft-focus, flamenco-tinged bliss of Claude Miss' "Paco Ye Adama", to the sun-kissed jazz-funk/synth-pop fusion of Marc Et Frank's "Cap'tain Coke" and the reggae-zouk quirkiness of Les 36 15's "Zoulous! (Remix)".

  1. Love Directions (10:58)
  2. Love Jelly (6:58)
Review: Some two years after their last outing on Love Circle, Gerry Rooney and Joel Martin bring their quirky - and, let's face it, on-point - Velvet Season & The Hearts of Gold project back to Resista for more dusty-fingered re-edit adventures. On the A-side they take their scalpels to a groovy slab of string-laden disco-soul rich in twinkling electric piano solos, hazy vocals ("move in all directions, come on follow me"), sharp strings and tactile grooves. Flipside "Love Jelly" is arguably even better, with the experienced twosome having their wicked way with a bustling chunk of trumpet and Hammond organ-laden jazz-funk. The track's drum breaks and yearning chords are particularly alluring, making it a toe-tapping, hip-wiggling treat.

  1. Ja'Net Dubois - "Queen Of The Highway" (Kon edit) (4:30)
  2. Jady Kurrent - "Standing There" (3:29)
Review: Backatcha Records can usually be relied upon to bring the goods, and this double A-side "45" is no exception. Side A boasts a fresh KON re-edit of the title track from Ja'net Dubois' fiendishly hard-to-find 1980 album "Queen of the Highway", a set that was for some reason only ever released in Brazil. It's a wonderfully sunny, horn-toting chunk of orchestrated jazz-funk/boogie fusion with definite Latin influences which Kon has expertly rearranged while steering clear of needless 21st century production trickery. Over on side B you'll find a previously unreleased cut from the Jady Kurrent Band, an obscure, Cleveland-based outfit who released a sole single in 1987. "Standing There" is a sweet slice of deep, mid-80s boogie rich in slap bass, slick lead vocals and '80s soul synths.

  1. Watchin' Out (3:17)
  2. Dazed (3:44)
Review: More dusty-fingered funk and reissue fun from DJ Fryer's prolific Athens of the North imprint. As usual, these tracks are pretty darn obscure; they both dropped on the Split Decision Band's 1978 debut on the obscure Network Records imprint. "Watchin' Out" is a tight-but-loose chunk of hazy disco-era funk with a sturdy backbeat and particularly rousing horns. It will slip into both funk and disco sets with ease. Flipside "Dazed" is altogether slower, with sparser production emphasizing the quality of the parping, razor-sharp horns. It's a superb alternative to the equally admirable A-side. Another winner from Athens of the North.

  1. All This Love That I'm Givin' (3:53)
  2. Maybe I'll Find Somebody New (3:25)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Review: Kris Baha had a big year in 2019 with the release of his debut album on CockTail d'Amore and an EP on Pinkman, and now the Australian body music man in Berlin is back with a high-pressure heater for [Emotional] Especial. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Especial then call on a cast of remixers to interpret the track in different ways, from Timothy J Fairplay amping up the dystopian disco tropes to Das Ding creating a sleek electro-funk twist with the original's gothic undertones intact.

Review: Back in 1980, Roy Ayers assembled the Eighties Ladies - a soulful vocal quintet whose members included sometime Aquarian Dream vocalist Sylvia Striplin. Sadly the group didn't last long, but their vibrant "Ladies Of The Eighties" single - a fine disco-tinged slab of boogie/jazz-funk fusion - became a big club hit. Their debut album, which is here reissued for the first time, is equally as impressive, with highlights including the rushing, part-rapped, attitude-laden "Tell Him" - later covered in the bruk era by West London outfit BB Boogie - cheery "I Knew That Love" and the liquid slap bass-propelled intergalactic space funk jam "It's Easy To Move" standing out. Throughout, Roy Ayers' production and arrangements are as tidy as you'd expect.

Review: Ashley Beedle and Ray Mang aka The Boogie Twins have reworked and edited one of Paul "Trouble" Anderson's biggest signature tracks. Beedle claimed witnessing Anderson at work at his Electric Ballroom residency back in the day was a major influence, where the late selector would move through boogie, electro, hip-hop and disco, particularly the low slung groove of Trouble On The Land's "A Love That Is Real" that's featured on this 12". The pair get to work, offering a special dubbed-out edit of this rare groove classic which remains a much-loved staple of today's club scene and an example of Anderson's exceptional ear for music. This is a charity record and a tribute to Anderson, with all profits directed to Macmillan Cancer UK.

Review: The always funky Tropical Disco Records is back with a 15th fantastic instalment of feel good, playful disco sounds that have you dying for warmer days and brighter nights. It's another various artist affair as is their MO, and Moodena goes first with some horn led disco funk. Sartorial's "Together" is a breezier, beach roller with a sense of cool jazz authority that gets you feeling loved up. Review: Italian label Samosa continues to deliver re-edits with "Funk Purpose". Volume three is every bit as strong as its predecessors, with a quartet of experienced re-editors offering up fresh reworks. Get Down Edits set the tone with "Comin' At Ya", a riotously beefy, tooled-up house revision of an urgent funk-soul gem, before Monsieur Van Pratt gleefully dances into disco-funk territory via the spacey synths, groovy bass guitar, crunchy Clavinet licks and fluttering flute solos of "UFO". Over on side B Souldynamic provides some rubbery disco bounce via "Better", while De Gama goes all samba-house with the cowbell-propelled South American style Hammond funk of "Groove On".

Review: It would be fair to say that this second part of the third instalment in Samosa's "Funk Purpose" series includes re-edits and sneaky remixes by some of the biggest hitters in the re-edit and nu-disco scenes. GAMM and Glitterbox regular Moplen leads the charge and in the process delivers a suitably sweaty, percussive and breathless peak-time disco-funk workout called "Ain't No Dub About It". Italian veteran DJ Rocca also impresses with another disco-funk rework, "Da Lion Groove", which successfully rearranges a heavyweight, horn-sporting affair previously re-edited by the Unabombers way back in the early 2000s. Elsewhere, SoulBrigada's "Gonna Do" is a relaxed and loved-up mid-tempo tweak of a saucer-eyed disco number, while the Funk District's "Anywhere You Like" is a tooled-up house revision of a punchy Blaxploitation-era number.

Originally appearing as one of three tracks on 'Mut'a Mbamba', her 1981 single released on Cameroonian producer Jojo Ngalle's record label Disques Jojo, 'Makom Ma Bobe' has recently exploded as one of the most sought-after Afro-disco records out there, with prices becoming ever exceedingly eye-watering and copies ever harder to find. Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. Review: Scalpel-wielding re-edit legend Danny Krivit has reworked one of his all-time favourites, Rene and Angela's 1981 boogie classic "I Love You More". He has previously reworked the track, but the edits here are brand new. On the A-side you'll find his fresh vocal extension and rearrangement, which naturally rolls out the killer groove - all liquid synth-bass, cascading lead lines, clipped guitars and ear-catching piano motifs - before unleashing the original's deliciously glassy-eyed and soulful vocal. Over on side B he's revisited his original instrumental re-edit, further emphasizing the cut glass strings, spacey synth solos and infectious groove. It's as loved-up as they come and arguably even better than his vocal take.

Review: Louie Vega's forthcoming "Expansions In The NYC" album was apparently created in part as a tribute to the roots of house music as he sees them. You'll find plenty of nods to classic styles of old in this second sampler EP. The A-side boasts two thrill-a-minute, sweat-soaked "Nico Funki" dubs of "How He Works" - muscular and forthright affairs rich in squelchy proto-house bass, righteous vocal samples and a nagging, almost familiar piano riff. The fun continues on side B via the breezy brilliance of "Can't Slow Down" - a fine slab of organic, disco-tinged house in Vega's now familiar style - and the superb "Vince Montana Tribute", a cut in the style of the vibraphone player and Salsoul arranger complete with Candido style disco drums.

While many will have heard snippets of some of its tracks in hip-hop tracks and via dusty disco re-edits (a number have been given the scalpel treatment in the past), few outside of Japan have been able to get the album since it was released way back in 1977. The premise is odd - composer Kentaro Haneda created the disco and jazz-funk set as a soundtrack to a series of detective novels - but the music is superb: a zany but hugely entertaining mixture of nods to various soundtrack styles underpinned by killer disco grooves and swirling orchestral movements. We'd heartily recommend checking out the clips ASAP.

Review: We won't get into the complex history of Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway", but suffice to say that it has been remixed and re-modeled in a myriad of ways over the years. This Glitterbox edition boasts two previously unheard rubs, including a flipside Frankie Knuckles presents Directors Cut "Soul Praise" version that for some reason missed the cut (sorry) back in 2012. While that's good - Knuckles reworks were always luscious, warm and celebratory, and this is no different. Moplen's "Classic Vibe" mix is slower and groovier with a wonderful '90s New Jersey feel (albeit with a touch of gospel-disco flavour), and sounds like a summer anthem in the making.

Italian DJ Trent was last spotted alongside Juan Ramos in Greenvision for CockTail d'Amore, and can be found holding it down in Berlin alongside Afro cosmic legend Beppe Loda. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". On this record it's DJ Si Si Si Gracias, who is happy slinging out loose and jangly funk that sounds like it's been picked up in 1980s New York lolling around outside The Mudd Club with one eye on Danceteria but definitely too freaky for Studio 54. "Gerry" is a special highlight - a slow and delirious groover with wild synths spilling all over the funk. If you want things really messy though, head straight for the dub chaos of "All The Feeling", where the percussion sounds like it's falling in on itself (in a good way).

  4. The Deep Disco (3:10)
Review: There's certainly plenty of sleaze you can read into this one. Ilya Santana takes blueprints of electronic music created in the 1980s and ups the ante, delivering four tracks that are destined to do well on deeper and more chug-focused global dancefloors. The kind of stuff that's deceptively heavy while also musically far-reaching, crank the volume up and stomping will come naturally. Very much in the realm of the late, great Andrew Weatherall, and therefore also one for fans of heads such as Manfredas, Optimo and the like, at the most solid, proggy end you've got 'The Deep Disco', destined to make more than a few people sweat, while 'Moon Road' sits on the lighter side comparatively, its tom drums and waves of synth underpinned by a deceptively solid kick.

  6. Ancient Nomads (4:07)
Review: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the fruitful early '90s exploits of The New Morning, a Munich-based crew who took their lead from the Afro-Cosmic scene pioneered in Northern Italy by DJs like Danielle Baldelli and Beppe Loda. On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.

  3. Mateo & Matos - "Joy 2 My Life" (Dennis Collado mix) (5:53)
  4. Vincent Floyd - "Economy Of Motion" (Vincent Inc remix) (7:38)
Review: We still don't know exactly who's behind these crucial drops on 14th Level Of Paradise, but at least we can be sure of the quality every time a new slab lands from on high. On this edition, Pawel Kobak opens up proceedings with a sweet, disco-sauteed heater with oodles of gorgeous instrumentation over a tough drum machine jack. Deep house don Callisto and DKMA get their sublime "Manga" reworked by Adam Jace, while Dennis Collado gets busy with Mateo & Matos' "Joy 2 My Life" in a dose of pure house uplift. Vincent Floyd's "Economy Of Emotion" is the final track, tastefully remixed by Vincent Inc who folds some subtle synth flourishes over the top of the crisp groove.

  1. Lil Kim - "Crush" (Jazz mix) (4:42)
  2. Jeff Lorber - "Raindance" (re-edit) (4:14)
Review: Galaxy Sound give this 1997 hip hop classic a new twist with some slick jazz stylings. Lil Kim's "Crush On You", is known by all but here it becomes something completely different: a forgotten jazz funk gem, colourful trumpet leads awash with lush drums and timeless soul. The flipside houses a re-edit of Jeff Lorber's "Rain Dance", which is in fact the original source of the samples on Lil Kim's track, and one that has been used on more than 20 other big time tunes. Here it's subtly tweaked but still remains a classic bit of jazz-flecked hip hop with some proper rude vocals.

Review: Life Classics - the Berlin based edit label run by Sanctuary - is back with four more disco heaters. "Yes Baby" is first out of the blocks with some fat and funky bass riffs, golden chord smears and a vocal that hits a real sweet spot. "Wet" is a little deeper but one that will still get you in a spin with its buttery lead vocal and neat riff work. "So Much TM" is a real soul train classic with big strings and racing 4x4 disco grooves while closer "Feel Inside" is a full loved up jam with heart swelling strings and smooth vocals accompanied by lush sax lines. These are gold standard edits.

  1. I'm Always In The Mood (3:56)
  2. Love Is All We Need (4:50)
Review: First released back in 1978 on Parachute Records, Randy Brown's debut album "Welcome To My Room" is one of the better lesser-known Philadelphia soul style sets of the disco era. The team behind Expansions Records are certainly fans, because their latest "45" offers up two of the album's most potent tracks. A-side "I'm Always In The Mood" is simply superb, with Brown doing his best Teddy Pendergrass impression atop a heavily orchestrated, dancefloor-friendly backing track. Flipside "Love Is All We Need" is a little deeper but no less sumptuous, sounding a little like Vincent Montana producing "What's Going On" era Marvin Gaye. In a word: essential.

  2. Love To The World (KON Lovestrumental) (9:32)
Review: Kon continues to use his Kontemporary label to release his own licensed remixes of original disco tunes. This time round, he presents two new versions of L.T.D's 1976 cut "Love To The World". His A-side "Lots of Love Remix" is particularly strong, offering a rolling, musically rich reconstruction that adds a little more contemporary low-end pressure while showcasing the original version's superb vocals by spreading it out, giving the punchy disco-funk horns, killer bassline and tasty instrument solos time to work its magic. Over on Side B, he offers up an instrumental version of the same mix in which soaring disco strings provide a focal point and push the track forwards towards a suitable celebratory conclusion.

  1. Disco Baby (3:06)
  2. Disco Baby (Floating Points & Red Greg edit) (3:55)
Review: If online chatter is to be believed, this tasty 7" from Floating Points' Melodies label is one of the most keenly anticipated disco releases of the year. For starters, the A-side boasts an obscure (but in demand) solo production from Manhattan Transfer keyboardist Yaron Gershovsky. "Disco Baby" is a prime chunk of jaunty, jazz-funk influenced disco-funk, the keyboardist's own jammed-out riffs and solos taking pride of place in the mix alongside punchy horns and a lolloping groove. Arguably even better, though, is Floating Points and Red Greg's flipside re-edit, which plays around with the original version's all-too-short drum break before letting the synths, keys and horns really sparkle.

Review: [Emotional] Especial stalwart and all-round underground progenitor Richard Sen makes a welcome return launching new label Darkness Is Your Candle with some of his inimitable muscular wave-tinted machine wares for seedy dancefloors. "No Sameness" is a stellar lead track - all evil one-note bass, freaky synth wriggles and the odd touch of splashy mixing desk FX. "Darkness Is Your Candle" is a touch more anthemic with its big melodic leads, but no less seductive. "Into The Abyss" completes the package with another brooding workout that slips in the cracks between vintage techno and minimal wave - classic tropes delivered impeccably.

Review: Cosmic disco legend Daniele Baldelli is enjoying recognition these days like never before, and now he's back alongside Marco Fratty with his first album in five years. As you would expect from something with Baldelli's magic touch, there's a warm '70s flavour to the music on offer here, but it's also rendered in pristine modern production quality. Particular highlights across this two disc set include the sweet flute-riffing of "Jasmine Flavour" and the freaky vocoder trip outs of "Slinky Funk", but truthfully the bar remains high throughout this impeccably executed slice of spaced-out disco business.

  1. Keep It Up (4:10)
  2. The Silence That You Keep (3:28)
Review:

Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

This is the first time "Keep It Up" has been re-issued in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. It's been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of TK Disco / Alston Records, Miami Florida, USA.
