Review: Donna Allen's 'Serious' is a stone-cold boogie classic whose acapella subsequently appeared in all manner of dance tracks from the early '90s onwards (most famously Strike's brilliantly OTT house classic 'U Sure Do'). Here 'remix-a-classic' specialists High Fashion get to work dragging the track into 2023, which will no doubt infuriate purists but delight those who have always longed for slightly faster and heavier mixes (the original rolls at around 110 BPM). Label regular Michael Gray steps up first with a tasteful, string-laden disco-house re-make that's actually quite radically different, whilst including enough of Allen's vocal and original version to make it familiar. Wayne Soul Avengerz and Odyssey Inc take a different approach, retaining most of the original instrumentation whilst upping the tempo and beefing up the beats.

Review: Marcus Belgrave's Gemini II album has never been reissued before with the original artwork, but here it comes with a Japanese Obi-strip and featuring prominent musicians and legends like Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Roy Brooks and Harold McKinney. This is a diverse record with plenty of spirituality and a loud and proud sense of blackness. The standout tune 'Space Odyssey' is the best known, not least because it was later covered by pioneering Detroit techno talent Carl Craig. Next to that tense cosmic workout are two parts of 'Gun Finger' which are both horn led and upbeat grooves, the seductive sounds of the title tune and free-bop jam 'Marcia's Opal'. 'Odoms Cave' is a tender and introverted closer.

Swedish producers Dorisburg (aka Alexander Berg) and Sebastian Mullaert decided to head to Malmo's Inkonst venue and install their music-making gear in preparation for this new record. They spent plenty of time there soaking up its aura and also creating a club setting with smoke machine, lights and so on. Then they turned on their gear and got going, with the results of those sessions presented here. They are fluid, ever-evolving soundscapes of tastefully reduced techno, futurist scenes and gentle but potent rhythms that find a perfect home on Neel and Donato Dozzy's Spazio Disponibile label. It's music that moves your mind and body in the most subtle and subversive of ways.

Review: German live act and producer Invexis is a legend amongst techno heads of a certain age. He hasn't actually relaxed any music for 20 years, however, so it's great that SHDW & Obscure Shape invite him out of the shadows for a new 12" that shows his blistering style. 'Silhouette' is a whirlwind of unrelenting drums and synth patterns that never stop evolving and twist and turn your mind into knots. 'Non Return To Zero' has a raw mechanical funk at its heart then things get hard assed on 'Red Storm,' deeper on 'Body Impulse' and euphoric on 'Odyssey.'

Review: Jay Kay's powerhouse of crossover Brit funk maestros never stayed in one lane, but progressed from album to album without missing a beat. On 2001's A Funk Odyssey, they folded some explicitly floor-focused house and disco ingredients into their soul stew and came up trumps, smashing the hits out while staying true to the elevated musicianship they marked themselves out with in the beginning. Review: 10 years after first starting out, June aka Tsampikos Fronas serves up a third full length on Mannequin Records that draws on all his years of musical exploration. The world that results is a dystopian one where machines have taken over and human life has long gone. Synths fizz with static electricity, drums and percussion automated by AI and the whole thing is like an exercise in cyber-transcendence. An arsenal of vintage analog synthesizers, drum machines and effect processors add retro-future textures that only serve to heighten the record overall.
