Rhythm (CD)
Cat: RASTERCDR 082. Rel: 04 Dec 07

Leftfield
A Soft Throbbing Of Time
The Big Black & White Game
We Can Remember It For You Wholesale
The Eight Day People
Other Days, Other Eyes
Construction Shack
The Moon Is A Hole In The Sky
All Summer In A Day
The October Game
Review: Frank Bretschneider's "Rhythm" is neither pop nor avant-garde, but deals simply with the basic principles of any modern music - rhythm. The terseness and precision of previous works remains, as well as a preference for high-voltage sounds halfway between noise and tone. A combination of programming, composition and construction, which draws a clear distinction to his preferred loop-based work on foregone albums, is connected with Bretschneider's very idiosyncratic aesthetic of digital sound. This is an explosive Raster Noton release.

Review: Up until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, it was notoriously difficult to run a record label in the German Democratic Republic, better known in the West as East Germany. New wave and experimental electronic enthusiast Frank Bretschneider got round this by restricting the releases of his Klangfarbe imprint to a handful of extremely limited cassettes. Here, he gathers the best of those releases together for the first time on vinyl, with each side of wax showcasing the work of a particular artist. It's impressively out-there and entertaining stuff, with tracks drawing influence from British and American minimal wave, Stockhausen style tape experimentation, post-punk noise, industrial funk, and Radiophonic Workshop style electronic experimentation.

Previously released as a set of four 12" records the compilation series titled 'Now' is finally available as a sixteen track CD. Versions Of The Prepared Piano
HAUSCHKA / VARIOUS
Cat: KALKCD 38. Rel: 27 Apr 07

Balearic/Downtempo
Eglantime Gouzy - "Mr Spoon"
Barbara Morgenstern - "I'm Schlaf"
Mobukazu Takemura - "Assembler's Mix"
Wechsel Garland - "Wega 2" (Stones remix)
Takeo Toyama - "Kotoba Naku"
TG Mauss - "Things"
Vert - "Rocket Man"
Frank Bretschneider - "Stumm"
Mira Calix - "Morning" (Morning mix)
Chica & The Folder - "Para Bien"
Hauschka - "Flying Horses"
Tarwater - "The Afterlife Of Things"
Review: After much anticipation, Hauschka's remix project is finally upon us. "Versions Of The Prepared Piano" includes remixes from a wide range of acclaimed artists situated around the globe, each with their own interpretation of a track from 2005's "The Prepared Piano". Ranging from TG Mauss's dirty electro rendition of "Twins" to Wechsel Garland's laidback pop shuffle that is "Es Waren Einmal", it's a varied affair throughout. Instead of the lazy and uninventive remixes that these sort of albums sometimes bring, each artist takes parts of Volker's (as Hauschka is known to his friends) subdued masterpieces and truly creates a new composition instead of an idle rehash.
