Review: Especial is a label always on a mission to unearth left-of-centre perspectives on club music. This new EP, Be Honest, is just that from long-time friends Lipelis and Arsenii, who are based in Belgrade and New York but seek inspiration in the New York sounds of the 80s and hook up with Gayana for some woozy and lovelorn vocal additions. 'Be Honest' is a dubbed out and swaggering deep disco groove that comes as long, dub and cappella versions on the A-side. The 12" dance mix brings some superb house drums into the picture and the Dubplate VIP is a fresh jungle rhythm. This is an EP with something for all.

Review: A choice selection of four deep. sultry floorfillers from four different artists across this new 12" from 124 Recordings. 'Come To Me' by Chris Fry heads up the selection with sturdy four-to-the-floor foundations hinting a original US garage vibes, all embellished with classy, oozing strings and a stickier-than-gum vocal refrain. Heat Alliance's '74 Streets' is a tad slower and dubbier and as its title suggests, revels in its rude funk and sparkly disco influences processed through some subtly modern filtering action. 'Amsterdam' from Kit Mason combines tripper FX with an irresistible, chunky groove, reminiscent of the soulful delirium of Felix da Housecat's finer moments, while 'Bit Mania' by Nicola Brusegan draws proceedings to a close with a celebratory, summer-slanted slice of uplift built around a nifty 70s-style funky guitar lick. Lots of variety, but everything here is going to get feet headed towards the dancefloor without doubt.

Review: Freddie McKay's Creation album, produced by Ossie Hibbert, presents a masterful fusion of original compositions and inspired covers, showcasing McKay's talent alongside reggae legends like Burning Spear and Dennis Brown. Hibbert's production expertise shines through, creating a seamless blend of classic reggae sound with subtle dub elements. The album's strength lies in its ability to breathe new life into familiar classics while maintaining the integrity of the originals. McKay's performances exude authenticity and passion, supported by skilled musicians who excel in the 'rockers' style of the seventies.

Review: Ajate's third album, Dala Toni, is a vibrant fusion of Afro groove and Japanese traditional Ohayashi music, showcasing the band's innovative approach to blending diverse musical traditions. Founded by Japanese musician Junichiro "John" Imaeda after a revelatory experience in West Africa, Ajate brings together ten passionate musicians to create music that transcends cultural boundaries. Utilizing a mix of traditional instruments like drums, flutes, and bells, as well as handmade bamboo instruments crafted by Imaeda himself, such as the unique 'Jaate' and 'Piechiku,' Ajate's sound is both powerful and distinctive. Their incorporation of Afrobeat rhythms and Japanese vocals adds further depth and richness to their music, reflecting themes of human connection, unity, and the joy of life.Having gained acclaim for their explosive live performances in Japan and beyond, including appearances at prestigious festivals like Sukiyaki Meets The World and WOMAD UK, Ajate's music resonates with audiences worldwide. With Dala Toni, they continue to push the boundaries of global music, solidifying their position as pioneers of the genre "made in Japan."

Review: Falko Brocksieper is a cult German minimalist who was favoured by the likes of Craig Richards and his Tyrant project. This new EP from 20/20 Vision takes a deep dive into his back catalogue to unearth a gem that first arrived via Treibstoff Recordings almost 20 years ago in 2006. 'Frantic Formula' is a nice liquid cut with wispy sci-fi pads and rolling grooves for early evening warm-ups, while 'Outrun' gets more upright with its jumbled drum loops and gurgling bass. 'Covert Action' is another masterfully languid and elastic rhythm that layers up cowbells, wobbly low ends and silky loops that soon lock you into the groove. A welcome remaster and reissue for sure.

Review: The LA-based ASHRR outfit is back with more of their superbly warm and soul-infused sounds here with 'Different Kind of Life'. Their own ASHRR Soundsystem version of the original is a gloriously upbeat and funky bit of space disco with lavish synth lines and chugging drums that lock you in. Berlin electronic mainstay Massimiliano Pagliara, who has landed on the likes of Ostgut Ton, Cocktail d'Amore and more, then brings his own two remixes. The first has some nice indie vocals and dazzling chord work, while the second is a deep dub that pairs things back. All three of these are swaggering and uplifting disco cuts with a difference.

This time they're joined by internationally renowned DJ and ESP Institute imprint manager 'Lovefingers' on remix duties, who supplies three genre-bending experimental dance gems perfect for summer terraces, pool-side parties or the dance floors of Pikes Ibiza.
Lovefingers' ESP Institute has dropped releases that have found their way into the bags of dance-floor heavy-hitters from Harvey to Weatherall and Moodymann to the legendary David Mancuso. His take on ASHRR original showcases dubbed-out oddities and psychedelic left turns in signature style.
In addition to the Lovefingers remixes, ASHRR returns with their very own 'ASHRR Soundsystem Version' offering up a tripped-out feel-good cut for the dance floor.

In their hands, it becomes a club-ready sound with a vocal you may recognise as it featured in the Mad Max episode of Stranger Things. Review: In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Naruto, 22d Music top up their excitations with a new, symphonic rendition of the music of the famous anime series. Beginning with a eureka moment shared between musician Jerome Leclercq and licensing company Mediatoon, the initial idea was to recreate the entire soundtrack for a live-streamable cinema concert in celebration of the imminent anniversary. Originally composed by Toshio Masuda, Naruto's OST is at its core a fusion project, blending traditional Japanese folk instruments such as the Shakuhachi and Shamisen with the familiar stylings of pop rock, effortlessly portraying the series' coming-of-age angst and ninja-starring energy and delivering it to an international audience, all while bottling the essence of the musical heritage of Japan. Reinterpreted by a 50-strong orchestra, and accompanied by an original montage of the best moments from the anime, this is a must-have for all the Naruto ultrafans out there.

Far from a Sophie Ellis-Bextor flip, opener 'Murder On The Dancefloor' narrativises the act of contriving a hitman for hire, with a sinister voice urging as to clarify whether they can indeed be of assistance to the listener. This character accompanies us throughout the four-track journey, which is otherwise constituted of parping yet dark electro-disco sonics and consistently techy 4x4 draws, among which 'Fatality' is the most enticing.

Review: Bernard Butler's Good Grief album marks his triumphant return to solo work after a hiatus of 25 years, during which he delved into diverse musical endeavours from pop songwriting to producing acclaimed albums with various artists. Reflecting on his journey, Butler candidly shares his apprehensions and eventual rediscovery of his solo voice, culminating in the creation of this album. Drawing inspiration from his experiences and collaborations, Butler's songwriting process for the LP was deeply introspective, allowing him to confront his emotions and craft lyrics that resonate with authenticity. The album encapsulates three decades of Butler's musical evolution, weaving together themes of loss, joy, and bewilderment. Butler's melodies are poignant and evocative, accompanied by his signature guitar work and soulful vocals. A testament to his enduring talent and a welcome return for fans of his solo work.

Review: Kristin Hersh's debut solo album, Hips and Makers, remains a timeless gem with her exceptional songwriting, strong vocals, and masterful guitar arrangements. Released in 1994, it's a raw and honest exploration of personal stories set against a backdrop of minimalistic yet intricate acoustic arrangements. The album's clever and in-your-face lyrics, coupled with breathtaking artwork by the late Vaughan Oliver and Paul McMenamin. Songs like 'Teeth' and 'Houdini Blues' deliver poignant insights, while the official single 'Your Ghost,' featuring backup vocals from Michael Stipe, stands out as a mainstream favourite. The expanded 30th-anniversary edition offers a deeper dive into Hersh's solo journey, with bonus tracks and a great demo of 'The Ghost'. Additionally, Hersh's live performances, such as the memorable show at Double Door in 1994, highlight her impressive stage presence. As Hersh continues to create music with Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave, her solo work remains a strong and more personal dedication to her craft.

Review: Slinky nighttime acid tech from Cirkel Square, laying down his debut 'Outside The Dome' EP for Subwax. Despite the title's focus on the hemispherical exterior, this is actually a two-track study on both the inside and outside of said dome. We begin life inside the hydroponic homestead, with surreptitious trance-acid and dimly lit pads suggestive of a secret plot to escape. The B-side's 'Outer Limits' responds with a more excitable jaunt, though by no means has our escape plan been scuppered by the authorities, with the mood continually driving, techy and methodical. Two remixes from Len Lewis and Magnus Asberg only add to the edge-of-your-seat excitement.

Review: The Ballistic Brothers' London Hooligan Soul, originally released in 1995 and now reissued in 2024, is a timeless masterpiece that effortlessly blends trip-hop, acid jazz, and downtempo vibes. From the smooth vocals of 'Portobello Cafe' to the funky horns of 'Soho Cab Ride,' each track delivers a unique sonic experience while maintaining a cohesive soulful atmosphere. 'I'll Fly Away' seamlessly combines breaks and killer basslines, while 'Jah Jah Call You' dives into dub territory with a steady groove. 'I Don't Know' adds a touch of strange easy listening by roughing up familiar samples, while 'Sister Song' infuses rhythmic excitement inspired by Brazilian beats. 'A Beautiful Space' oozes with downtempo funk, while 'Steppin' Into Eden' smoothly transitions into breakbeats. The old-school dub of 'Peckings' exudes joy, while 'Uschi's Lament' closes the album on a mellow, jazzy note. With its eclectic grooves and soulful funk, London Hooligan Soul is a brilliant album that captures the essence of 90s music.

Review: Bill Laurance's Bloom marks a grand transition from intimate duo collaborations to a widescreen orchestral spectacle. Teaming up with Manchester's Untold Orchestra, Laurance delivers a riveting fusion of classical sensibilities, jazz improvisation, and pop grooves. The eponymous opener features dark string chords expanding into a rhythmic journey with piano melodies and hypnotic improvisation. Inspired by his child's imaginative capacity, Laurance crafts a sonic landscape that evokes Baroque, Vivaldi, and modern influences, all while maintaining a sense of wonder and exploration. The Untold Orchestra shines in their tightness and sensitivity, elevating Laurance's compositions to cinematic heights. With Bloom, Laurance strikes a delicate balance between technical mastery and emotive storytelling, creating a stunning listening experience that invites listeners to lose themselves in its dreamlike realms.

A CV generator based on the simulation of a physical system, ocean swells
Notes: Following ADDAC's ADDC503 Marble Physics here is a new simulation of a physical system. This time, imagine a small area in the middle of the ocean, in this area we place 4 equally spaced buoys anchored to the bottom in such a system that we can control the spacing between the buoys. Imagine we can control the elements and agitate the waters at will which in turn will make the buoys move up and down as the water surface moves.

Finally imagine the buoys would wirelessly transmit their absolute height directly to your module outputs where they would be mapped to a voltage signal.

ADDAC use a Gerstner Wave as the motor behind the two-dimensional wave generation. In fluid dynamics a Gerstner Wave is described as "a progressive wave of permanent form on the surface of an incompressible fluid of infinite depth". Gerstner waves are often used in computer graphics to simulate any type of water surface, if you've seen any animation film or computer game with water surfaces in it most probably it features a Gerstner wave generating it.

4-channel stereo mixer module - 8HP
Notes: ADDAC813 is a straight forward stereo mixer. Featuring 5 stereo channels, 4 of them with attenuators, a mono send/return path for parallel processing plus stereo and mono outputs

Four channels with stereo input and gain knob. Fifth channel with stereo input without gain knob, which are the prefered inputs to cascade several ADDAC813s when more channels are needed. Master Output controls the level of the Inputs mix. Two LEDs monitor the inputs mix.

Mono Send / Return return path allows for easy integration of mono effects in a stereo chain. Plug your favorite module through it (filter, bbd delay, spring reverb...) or any mono pedal.

The Return Gain works in parallel with the Master Output, just like regular wet / dry controls.

The send output can be configured to be line or synth level via a jumper in the back.

Stereo output sums the Inputs Mix with the Return signal.

The Mono output is the sum of Left and Right outputs

Effect Pedals

Using the send output at Line level, the user can connect the send output directly into mono effect pedals and have the pedals output connected directly into the return input without the need of an attenuator/amplifier module.

Review: AF 1268 welcomes a true UK tech house don in Rob Pearson for its second release, and another fine one it is too. Once again he mixes up his slick infectious grooves with acid twitches and tripped out sonic motifs that make for tunes as effective on the mind as they are the body. 'It Works' is a slinky opener with low slung bass, 'The Darkhold' is more driven with dubbed out low ends and 'Far Far Out' gets a lil' freaky for the after party. 'Moderno Nocturno' (with Kirsten Sees) is a gritty and metallic tech cut with real snap in the drums. A superb EP that offers plenty of DJs and dancers.

Review: Soweto to Harlem highlights a unique moment in musical history, where the paths of American jazz legend Hal Singer and South African saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi intersected. Produced by Rashid Vally in 1976, this album stands as a testament to the power of collaboration across borders. The title track, inspired by Singer's journey from Soweto to Harlem, sets the tone for the entire recording, blending elements of rhythm and blues with a laid-back yet cheeky vibe. Singer's quartet delivers a nostalgic and soulful performance, with each track exuding a sense of camaraderie and musical excellence. While initially only available in South Africa, Soweto to Harlem now serves as a cherished artifact of cultural exchange and musical innovation, showcasing the enduring legacy of two jazz pioneers.

With 14 tracks in total and most of them clocking in at between three and a half and five minutes, Argy doesn't beat around the bush, giving people what they came for. These tracks ebb and flow quicker than normal techno tracks, giving them a much more straightforward and popular feel. Argy's singing over the tracks fit very well, like in 'All Day Long'. The rhythms are strong while the beats are pulsing and dynamic. Argy is known to be a fantastic techno producer. Singles off the album include 'Higher Power', 'Aria', and 'Pantheon'.

Review: Originally released on tape by SicSic in 2014, Aprilnacht commemorates a decade of music from Brannten Schnure and marked the spring in a tetralogy of albums about the four seasons. When it was first released, Brannten Schnure consisted solely of German musician Christian Schoppik; it was only after this period that he'd continue to hone is gothic folk romanticism and pastoral neoclassical sound, thereafter enlisting the help of vocalist Katie Rich as well. Now reissued by the esteemed Aguirre Records, Aprilnacht returns for a second haunting, retro-spectrally calling to mind its eerie sound collages and dusty sampler assemblages.

Review: Maxime dB and Aline Brooklyn's AirFunk label serves up five fresh ones in their usual vein of French pop and electro-influenced dance music. The fourth edition in their V/A series makes for no less than a masterclass in such inherited arts; the A-side comes packed to the brim with airy, upper-echelonic, sophisticated but not-tryhard electro-syntheses, from the introductory chord bursts and catwalk kick-claps of 'Nrj' to the lippy new wave lasers and speak n' spelled interjections of Electrodynamique's 'That Is Right'. The B adds depth to the A's surface tensity, with La Gugga's 'Gogo Danca' and Paul Cut's 'Shoes' lending a fashionista's verve to stringing, saxophonic deep house and bass-driven Oizo-esque flat beats respectively.

Answer 81' Easter Gig 19th April 1981 Live Recorded At Kyoto Takutaku Vol 2
Review: Taken from a live performance at an event titled Answer 81 at the Kyoto venue Taku Taku in 1981, this bootleg from Japanese hardcore punk heroes The Stalin was recorded half a year before the release of their seminal debut Trash LP. Featuring a frenetic, unhinged performance from one of the earliest line-ups of the group, while boasting alternative versions of tracks from tangentially linked projects (with differing titles pulled from the original masters tapes). For example, 'Kiga Kiga Kikyou', a popular solo track from frontman and primary Stalinist Michiro Endo, appears here as 'Want You', marking the first time The Stalin's version has ever been released or committed to record. 'Buta No Ketsu' also serves as a reworking of a cut from the band's earlier incarnation Jiheitai, with this also making its first official appearance on wax.

Fittingly, it’s a long-serving hometown hero – the one and only DJ Sneak – who inaugurates the imprint via a typically club-focused four-tracker. He begins with ‘Gettin’ Ghetto’, a rolling and hypnotic house loop jam in his familiar style, before opting for stomping drums, raw electronic motifs, sweat-soaked percussion fills and effects aplenty on the breathless and trippy ‘I Beat That Ghetto’. Over on the reverse we’re treated to two takes on ‘Spirit Taker’: a deliciously tracky, psychedelic and warehouse-ready ‘Dub’ (track 3) and the marginally more action-packed original version (track 4).

Review: Tom VR's Acheless is a musical masterpiece that seamlessly blends the melodic sensibilities of Detroit house with the raw energy of tech house. The original track captivates listeners with its poignant broken breakbeats that evoke a sense of longing and introspection. The lush, Detroit-inspired melody serves as a sonic balm, providing solace and comfort amidst the emotional turmoil. The VIP version takes a different approach, incorporating dub-oriented elements with intricate skipping percussion and ethereal soundscapes. 'Couldn't Find the Words' exudes an upbeat and energetic vibe. It's fast-paced clicky house rhythm and techy elements create an infectious dancefloor anthem. The filtered soundscapes add a touch of mystery and intrigue, inviting listeners to lose themselves in the hypnotic groove. This EP showcases the artist's versatility and emotional depth.

Review: Mega-exclusive, exquisite house, funk and disco editry from Almacks, who follow up two just-as-delightful introductions to the series with a welcome third. This furtive operation is almost entirely mediated by retailers like us, and is billed as a purveyor of 'tried and tested sure-shots' in very limited runs, whose coveted lipid discs help bolster "community in secret places". Of course, what would be a sense of community without a sense of exclusivity to match? The crux of the art of the five tracks here, though all largely instrumental, is indeed penetrable; all the numbers here home in on the glisteny downtime moments heard on many a classic disco and funk tune, in which time seems to stop, nerves grow tender, and high strings and ghostly vocals take flight. Keep an eye on this series; it reminds us of a funkier-intoned Ghost Phone; 'Track 4' is the real odd highlight.

Review: A groundbreaking 1973 post-bop, avant-garde jazz masterpiece from Argentina, Coraje Buenos Aires is infused with potent political themes and now emerges from obscurity. The record serves as the missing link in Argentina's jazz legacy, and surfaces after five decades to shed light on a tumultuous era. Recorded as a sequel to the seminal Bronca Buenos Aires (1971), Coraje boldly denounces the oppressive military regime through its poignant texts. Despite censorship attempts, the album's tapes resurfaced from the archive of the late Jorge Lopez Ruiz, meticulously restored by Pablo Lopez Ruiz. Accompanied by bilingual notes from Jose Tcherkaski, this historic release redefines Argentina's jazz narrative with its raw authenticity and unyielding spirit.

Review: The fourth full-length LP by Canadian punk rockers Nomeansno comes as their most popular album to date, a whirlwind of post-hardcore, heavy metal and jazzcore influences that harks back not only to nineties interpretations of post-punk, but also fresh renditions and fusions of the sound in the 21st Century. Pondering catacylsmic themes and cryptic modern aporias, this is a veritable walloping in sound from the Vancouver troupe.

Review: You may have heard that former Dead Kennedys frontman and now multi-project artist Jello Biafra leads his very own School Of Medicine, inspired by the pioneering medicinal discoveries of his antecedents Iggy Pop and hip-hop greats such as Hieroglyphics and Digital Underground. The Audacity Of Hype, the School's first patent, was the logical chemical synthesis that made up these ingredients; fiery, crunchy, high-velocity, hardcore punk and post-punk, with a dashing of metal drumming and political emphasis on "Homeland insecurity". Now reissued via Alternative Tentacles a full fifteen years later - cracking stuff!

Review: Dead Kennedys' best frontman Jello Biafra's onetime collaboration with the band D.O.A. produced this hardcore punk gem - 'Last Scream Of The Missing Neighbours' - which fused the best of both bands' sounds, while namechecking every popular and/or political scandal at the time, such as Willie Horton, the Iran-Contra Affair, Oliver North, and the US crack epidemic. Just six tracks on this indelible EP, now reissued via original label, Alternative Tentacle do well to satirize the powers that be in true punk fashion, culminating in the 14-minute military meat-grinder that is 'Full Metal Jackoff'.

Review: Revered as one of U.S. hardcore punk's most humorous, yet politically outraged projects, Last Scream Of The Missing Neighbours is a gem by Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) and the band D.O.A., in a collaborative effort that spans every blood-boiler from the gentrification of Colorado to the then nascent (putatively C.I.A.-fuelled) crack epidemic. Less concerned with a piercing sonic aesthetic than getting its lyrical point across, this mini-album was a conduit and awareness-raising exercise in the battle against capitalist doublespeak and is best known for its culminating in the closing fourteen-minute dramaturgy 'Full Metal Jackoff', decrying everything from racial scapegoating to the U.S. military-everything complex.

Review: Moby's latest album, Always Centered at Night, is an homage to the power of unrestricted creativity and the allure of New York's late 70s music scene. With the assistance of exceptional vocalists, Moby has crafted a collection of songs that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. The album's unique approach, allowing vocalists complete artistic freedom, has resulted in a tapestry of sonic genius. From serpentwithfeet's ethereal dreamlike vocals to Benjamin's poignant poetry, each track exudes a sense of vulnerability and emotional depth. Always Centered at Night transcends commercial constraints, embracing the beauty of raw and unconventional expression. Moby's aim to foster creative integrity shines through, as the featured artists pour their souls into these collaborative pieces. This eclectic mix highlights the album's commitment to diversity and the celebration of talent beyond traditional boundaries. By showcasing the immense vocal talents of his collaborators, Moby has created an album that is a tribute to the transformative power of music.

Review: Moby's latest album, Always Centred At Night, is a collaborative smorgasbord, it's theme being a vocal feature from a different artist on each track: whether this be Lady Blackbird, Benjamin Zephaniah, Gaidaa, Jose James, serpentwithfeet, Akemi Fox or Aynzli Jones, all tracks on this record evince a distinctive record producer flaunting a profound finger on the pulse. This time, the palette is lowercase (titularly and in sound) and stripped back, continuing the ultra-hi-def direction Moby has moved in in recent years. In Moby's own words, "Always Centered At Night continues my love of collaborating, but (it) has a focus of working with amazing singers who might not be as well known as David Bowie and Gregory Porter."

Review: Sega Bodega's latest record Dennis hears the producer go full-throttle weirdo future bass and ghostly dream pop, signaling the producer's increasing ability to experiment after the founding of his own label Ambient Tweets. The Galway-born artist's third full-length record is said to explore the state between sleep and consciousness. Of course, wordsmiths know that hypnagogia (and/or hypnopompic) are the operative terms here, depending on the time of day - though this record can't be pegged as anything close to a 'hypnagogic pop' record. Battling the existential anxieties of AI technology and the possibility that we already exist in a simulated world, Dennis formally captures the feeling of the above through shattered-glass-refracted, stuttered, angelic vocal chopups; genreless hypeup electronics; and even breathy ultrafolk ballads ('Set Me Free, I'm An Animal').

Review: Greg Foat is a London-based keyboardist, composer, bandleader and DJ. Foat's latest full-length record displays the musician's lifelong, self-described 'love-hate relationship' with the keys, which he says began in childhood, when he fell off a piano stool at his aunt's house. A domestic homage, 'Spider Plant Blues' fittingly pays tribute to two houseplants that sit on Greg's bedside tables, and move periodically depending on his whims; 'Spider Plant Blues' is an evening high-flyer for electric piano, unbothered drums and backing strings, while 'Snake Plant Shuffle' is a darker and drier organism backed by arpeggiating sytnhy blossomings in the stereo mix.

Review: We are once more graced by the inimitable ambient experimental stylings of Pub, a longstanding titan of the weirder and serener ends of the braindance circuit. Emerging from the mists with his very own smog bottling, Process The Wise is Pub’s first record in over a decade, charting dewdrop synths arranged in melodious but unpredictable fashion, amid progressive cutoff-filterings and crystalline washouts in the wider mix. Its pared-back moments are just as gemlike, with the curious interregnum that is ‘Waves Across’ nailing a certain mood of egress, and the closer that is ‘Joyus’ getting at a muted form of joy that perhaps only the more reflective among us can appreciate.

Review: Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for La Donna Della Domenica is yet another masterful display of the great composer's musical prowess. Released in 1975, this score seamlessly blends elements of jazz, funk, and classical music, reflecting the film's noir atmosphere. Morricone's compositions evoke a sense of mystery and suspense, enhancing the on-screen drama, and that is true again here. Tracks like 'La Donna Della Domenica' and 'La Lucertola' showcase his ability to create haunting melodies and intricate arrangements. With its diverse instrumentation and emotive themes, Morricone's score for La Donna Della Domenica remains a captivating listen, underscoring his status as one of cinema's greatest composers.
