12dB multimode filter module - 8HP
Notes: Module A-124 is a special 12dB multimode filter using the "strange" filter circuit of the "EDP Wasp" (an analog synthesizer with black/yellow case built end of the seventies, manufactured by the UK company "Electronic Dream Plant").

This design "abuses" digital inverters as analog operational amplifiers leading to distortions and other "dirty" effects that generate the specific sound of this filter.

The filter is equipped with a band pass output and a combined low/notch/high pass output. For this output a control knob defines the relation between low and high pass signal.

If both signals appear at the same level (i.e. middle position of the Mix knob) one obtains a notch filter. Otherwise the low or high pass signal predominates.

The module does not feature self oscillation in contrast to most of the other filters of the A-100 system.

Voltage-controlled wave form multiplier - 14HP
Notes: A-137 is a voltage controlled Wave Multiplier. The basic idea of a wave multiplier is to multiply the waveform of an incoming signal (e.g. triangle/saw/sine from a VCO) within one period of the waveform. This leads to additional harmonics of the incoming signal. The period and consequently the pitch of the signals remains unchanged (in contrast to frequency multiplication e.g. with the PLL module A-196).

The A-137 works as a kind of "inverse low pass filter", i.e. it adds a lot of harmonics to a signal that contains none or only a few harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle waveform). In contrast to that a low pass filter (e.g. A-120) removes harmonics from a signal that contains a lot of harmonics (e.g. saw or rectangle waveform). Consequently the best results are obtained in combination with input signals poor in harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle). The A-137 can be used with signals rich in harmonics too (e.g. saw) but the effect is not as remarkable as for triangle or sine waves. For rectangle signals none or only little effects are obtained.

The A-137 is a very sophisticated wave multiplier that offers much more features, more controls and more waveform manipulations than other wave multipliers available so far. In addition all parameters are both manually adjusted and controlled by external voltages. These are the features of the module:

Controls:

- Input Level (to adjust the input level for best effect of the succeeding controls)
- Multiples (number of waveform multiplications, manual control)
- Harmonics (additional effect that adds more harmonics similar to the resonance/emphasis control of filters, manual control)
- Folding Level (controls upper and lower folding level, manual control)
- Symmetry (controls symmetry between upper and lower folding level, manual control)

Inputs/Outputs:

- Audio In (also suitable for control signals)
- Multiples CV In (with attenuator)
- Harmonics CV In (with attenuator)
- Folding Level CV In (with attenuator)
- Symmetry CV In (with attenuator)
- Audio Out (resp. processed control signal output)

The Multiples parameter (manual and ext. CV) defines the number of basic wave multiplications within one period. With the Folding Level and Symmetry parameter (both manual and ext. CV) the upper and lower clipping levels of the wave folder units are controlled. The Harmonics parameter (manual and ext. CV) adds some harmonic content by sharpening the waveform edges and adding overshoot peaks. It works a little bit like the resonance control of a VCF. The module is fully DC coupled, i.e. even control signal can be processed with the modules.

Generates four phase shifted copies of a VCO signal applied to the audio input
Notes: Module A-137-2 is another version of a wave multiplier. In contrast to the A-137-1 Wave Multiplier I, the A-137-2 generates four phase-shifted copies of a VCO signal applied to the audio input. The four shifted signals are added to the original signal to obtain a fat sound similar to five independent VCOs. The phase shifting is made by a simple circuit that works only for sloped signals like sawtooth, triangle or sine, but not for rectangles or pulses.

The audio input signal (typically a sawtooth, triangle or sine wave from a VCO) is compared with a slowly varying control voltage (CV Shift In). The output of the comparator is a rectangle wave with variable pulse width. When the output of the comparatur is added to the input signal (a sawtooth in the example) with the correct level relation between both signals one obtains a phase shifted sawtooth. The left picture shows the incoming sawtooth wave on top. The two horizontal dashed lines (blue and orange) indicate two different comparison levels. Below the incoming sawtooth the two resulting comparator outputs (rectangle waves) and the two resulting shifted sawtooth waves are shown. It is not a "real" phase shift but an algebraic function. But the result is virtually the same. One could obtain the same function even with several comparator modules A-167 and mixers A-138a/b or polarizing mixers A-138c. But this would require a lot of modules.

The module has available four manual shift controls and four control voltage inputs with attenuators for the four internal shifting circuits. Typical sources for these inputs are LFOs, VCLFOs, random voltages, envelope generators, sequencers or other control voltage sources. Internally eight single outputs are available at single pins: the four shifted signals and in addition four rectangle outputs. A corresponding breakout module with eight sockets is in the planning stage and will be released provided that there are sufficient inquiries. The original signal and the four shifted signals are equipped with internal jumpers. If external toggle switches are used instead of the jumpers each of the 5 signals can be turned on/off individually.

The audio input is equipped with an attenuator to adjust the level for the right summation of the original and the comparator signals (as described above).

Crossfader for two different A-100 signals, plus insert for external effects
Notes: The A-138d primarily is used for crossfading between two modular signals. On the other hand you can used it for inserting stompboxes or other effects into your modular system. Both the inputs and the mix output are available twice, like a mini-multiples e.g. for using the input signal also for other applications, kind of like a Thru.

Crossfader: With the crossfading control CF you blend manually between the inputs In 1 and In 2. The Mute switch allows for muting one of the two signals, independent on the crossfader position.

Effect insert: The signal at input In1 is emitted at the FX Send output and can be attenuated with the Atten. control because the modular system works with much higher levels.

The effect unit's output is inserted to the FX Return input socket and its level can be boosted with the Amp. control. The processed signal is available at the bottom in 2 socket.

Use the CF control to blend between the original signal and the effect signal and to mute switch for quick muting e.g. of the effect return signal.

19HP Eurorack module for attenuating, polarizing & crossfading audio or control signals
Notes: Module A-138e contains four identical units that can be used for different crossfading, mixing and polarizing applications:

Polarizer: only input A is used, inputs B and C are unconnected. In this case the sub-unit works as a polarizer. In the CCW position of the control the signal connected to input A appears at the output, in the CW position the inverted signal, in the centre position no signal appears at the output

Two-way Crossfader type 1: Two different signals are connected to the inputs A and C, switch is in the left position (switching contact of input B is open). In this case the sub-unit works as two-way crossfader between the two signals connected to the inputs A and C. In the centre position both signals appear with the same level.

Two-way attenuator: Two different signals are connected to the inputs A and C, switch is in the right position (switching contact of input B is connected to GND). In this case control is used to attenuate signal A (between CCW and centre position) or signal C (between centre and CW position). In the centre position no signal appears at the output. Similar to the two-way crossfader but without signal in the centre position.

Three-way Crossfader: Three different signals are connected to the inputs A, B and C. In this case the sub-unit works as three-way crossfader. In the CCW position only signal A appears at the output. Between CCW and centre position a mix of the signals A and B appears at the output. In the centre position only signal B appears at the output. Between centre and CW position a mix of signals B and C appears at the output. In the CW position only signal C appears at the output.

Two-way Crossfader/Polarizer type 2: Two different signals are connected to the inputs A and B. In the CCW position only signal A appears at the output. Between CCW and centre position a mix of the signals A and B appears at the output. In the centre position only signal B appears at the output. Between centre and CW position a mix of signals B and inverted signal A appears at the output. In the CW position only the inverted signal A appears at the output. Useful for CV mixing: e.g. signal A = ADSR, signal B = LFO. In this case one can fade between ADSR ... LFO + ADSR ... LFO ... LFO - ADSR ... - ADSR.

In addition, the inverted signal of input A is available as a separate output. Potentiometers with centre detent and centre terminal are used as controls.

Octal VCA module containing four VCA pairs - 8HP
Notes: A-132-8 is an octal VCA and primarily planned for polyphonic applications. The module contains four VCA pairs. Each pair includes two daisy-chained VCAs. One VCA has a linear control scale, for the second VCA linear or exponential control scale can be chosen by means of jumpers. We decided to provide two VCAs for each voice because usually one VCA is required for loudness envelope and a second one for velocity (or other functions like individual voltage-controlled loudness of each voice, amplitude modulation and so on).

These controls and in/outputs are available:

- Default Gain 1 (GL)
- Default Gain 2 (GX)
- CV Input VCA 1
- CV Input VCA 2

In addition, an Audio Sum Output is also available.

The module features two Default Gain controls (GL, GX), that enable the opening of the first VCAs (L) and/or second VCAs (X). For this the controls GL and GX generate two internal control voltages 0...+10V which are connected to the switching contacts of the sockets 1L...4L (control GL) and 1X...4X (control GX). As long as no patch cable is inserted into the socket in question the internal default control voltage (GL or GX) is used to control the corresponding VCA. This is necessary when the VCA in question is not in use (i.e. no external CV available). Otherwise the VCA would close and there would be no output signal even if the other VCA in the chain is open. The controls GL and GX are also useful for testing polyphonic patches (e.g. for tuning the VCOs).

In the factory the CV inputs are adjusted for a CV range 0...+10V - matching to the polyphonic ADSR module A-141-4. But the sensitivity of each CV input can be adjusted by means of a trimming potentiometer to adapt the CVs even to other control voltage ranges.

- Bal.: manual balance control, fully CCW the internal VCO is used, fully CW the external signal (Ext.In) is used, at centre position both signals have about the same level
- CV Bal.: CV input for balance (range about 0...+5V)
- Ext. In: external audio input for VCA2, about 5 Vpp level required for similar loudness as the internal VCO
- This socket is normalled to the internal VCO suboctave f/2 signal (rectangle with half the frequency), if no external signal is applied the suboctave signal is used as the second signal for the balance unit

VCF:

- 24 dB low pass
- Frq: manual frequency control
- FM1: frequency modulation depth (attenuator wired to the VCF FM1 socket, the socket is normalled to the internal Envelope signal and then FM1 controls the modulation depth of the internal envelope applied to the filter)
- FM2 (socket) : second CV input for VCF without attenuator (about 1V/octave), can be used e.g. for VCF tracking by connecting the same CV which is used also for the VCO frequency
- Res: manual resonance control (up to self oscillation)
- If the VCO is turned off (waveform switch = centre position, pulsewidth control = fully CCW or CW) and the VCF resonance is set to maximum the module can be used as a sine oscillator, the tracking at socket VCF FM2 is about 1V/octave (not as precise as the VCO but much better than most other filters)
- ~ 11 octaves frequency range (~ 10 Hz ... 20kHz)

VCA:

- Gain: manual amplitude control (initial gain), can be used to open the VCA without envelope signal
- VCA (switch): used to switch between gate and envelope as control signal for the VCA, in centre position the VCA is not controlled by envelope or gate
- Note: when gate is used the VCA is controlled directly by the gate signal (i.e. hard on/off), this may lead to clicking noise under certain conditions (especially with low VCO/VCF frequencies)
- Special control scale: exponential scale in the range from about -20dB to -80/90dB, linear scale from about -20dB to 0dB
- Remark: this special control scale results in a loudness behaviour that is a bit different from pure linear or exponential VCAs
- Out: audio output of the module (= VCA output)

Envelope:

- Gate (socket): Gate input (min. +5V), can be normalled to the bus gate signal by means of a jumper
- Att: manual control for Attack
- D/R: manual control for Decay/Release
- Env. (switch): used to switch between A/D, ADSR and A/R mode of the envelope generator, in centre position (ADSR) the sustain level is fixed to about 50%
- Envelope (socket): envelope output (about +10V)

Notes: Module A-121-3 is functionally nearly identical to module A-121-2. Only the distances between the controls and sockets are smaller and rubberized, small rotary knobs are used. Therefore the front panel width is only 4HP compared to 8HP of the A-121-2. In the first place it is planned for applications where only limited space is available. The only functional difference compared to the A-121-2 is the missing attenuator for the resonance CV input CQ.

These are the most important features of the module:

Multi-featured mixer - 6HP
Notes: Module A-138i is a four channel mixer with an additional mute switch for each input. On top of that it is equipped with two types of single outputs and a dual mix output. All inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently the VCAs can be used to mix both audio and control voltages.

Each input is - apart from the mute switch - equipped with the usual attenuator.

The single outputs offer the attenuated and possibly muted signal of the channel in question. Two version of single outputs are available:

Single Output A: If a plug is inserted into the single output "A" socket the channel in question is removed from the sum signal.

Quad low frequency oscillator - 4HP
Notes: Module A-145-4 is a simple quad LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator). Not a very "exciting" module, just a bread-and-butter device and a simple demon for work. Virtually in every modular system several LFOs are required for modulation purposes. The module contains four simple LFOs with the waveforms triangle and rectangle. A dual colour LED (red = positive / yellow = negative output voltage) indicates the triangle output of each LFO. The frequency range can be chosen for each LFO individually by means of a jumper between about 50 Hz ... 0.04 Hz (about 20 seconds, jumper removed) and about 2Hz ... 0.002 (about 8 minutes, jumper installed).

The module can be treated as a slimmed version of the quad LFO A-143-3 as it has similar features available. But the distances between the controls are smaller and rubberized small-sized knobs are used. In return the front panel has 4 HP only which is less than one third of the A-143-3. The module is primarily planned for applications where only limited space is available. The functional difference compared to the A-143-3 are the missing sawtooth outputs and frequency range switches.

Technical notes: Module A-121-2 is the successor of the obsolete module A-121. But the circuitry is totally different from the A-121 which used the obsolete CEM3320 filter circuit. The sound of the new module A-121-2 is identical to filter of the Dark Energy II but has been expanded by the voltage-controlled resonance feature.

Module A-106-6 is a multimode filter that is based on the filter circuit of the Oberheim Xpander. The module features 15 different filter types (those filters of the A-107 that were available in the Xpander) with 8 filters available simultaneously. The toggle switch Filter Group is used to switch between 2 filter groups.

These filter types are available:

- 1L (6 dB low pass)
- 2L (12 dB low pass)
- 3L (18 dB low pass)
- 4L (24 dB low pass)
- 1H (6 dB high pass)
- 2H (12 dB high pass)
- 3H (18 dB high pass)
- 2B (6 dB band pass)
- 4B (12 dB bandpass)
- 2N (notch)
- 3A (allpass)
- 2H1L (asymmetrical band pass made of a 12 dB high pass and a 6 dB low pass)
- 3H1L (asymmetrical band pass made of a 18 dB high pass and a 6 dB low pass)
- 2N1L (combination of notch and 6 dB low pass)
- 3A1L (combination of allpass and 6 dB low pass)

The module features voltage-controlled resonance. For filter group 2 (2L, 4L, 2B ...) even self-oscillation is possible.

All standard VCF controls are available: manual filter frequency control Frq, one control voltage input with attenuator (FCV2) and one without attenuator (FCV1, ~ 1 V/octave). In addition, voltage-controlled resonance with manual control (Q) and a CV input with attenuator (QCV) are available.

The circuit is based on a 24dB lowpass filter. The outputs of the four internal filter stages (i.e. the 6, 12, 18 and 24dB outputs) are mixed together with different levels and polarities to obtain 15 different filters. Because of this special circuit the outputs have slightly different levels and noise floor. This is caused by the different internal amplifications and numbers of stages that are required to generate the filter in question. If e.g. a filter is derived by one stage only (e.g. the 6 dB, 12dB, 18dB and 24dB low pass) the noise floor is smaller compared to a filter that is derived by a combination of all four filter stages.

Notes: Module A-171-2 is a voltage controlled slew limiter with a lot of additional features beyond a simple slew limiter. It's mostly a licensed copy of Ken Stones VCS which is in turn based on the Serge VCS.

Typical applications:

- VC Slew Limiter / VC Portamento / VC Low Pass Gate:

Cycle switch = off, no trigger signal applied to Trig socket: Voltage controlled Slew limiter or portamento generator: the signal applied to the signal input is "slewed". The slew up and down times are controlled manually by means of the Up and Down controls, the effect of the CV Up and CV Down control voltages are controlled by the CV Up and CV Down controls, in exponential mode these controls also affect the slew shape (see symbols at the CCW and CW positions of the controls).

If an audio signal is applied an short slew rates are chosen the module works as a simple VCF/VCA combo.

- A/D Envelope Generator / Pulse Delay / Subharmonic Generator:

Cycle switch = off, trigger signal applied to Trig socket, no input signal: Simple Attack/Decay envelope Generator, the rise and fall times are controlled like the slew up/down times above, including the shape of the falling/rising slope of the envelope, the exp. CV input can be used to change both attack and decay simultaneously.

At the End output a pulse appears as the end of the envelope is reached (less than about 20mV), this can be used as a pulse delay.

If a series of triggers are applied to the VCS faster than the total rise and fall times, the module will divide the incoming signal by a whole number. In the audio range the output will be the sub-harmonic series.

- VCLFO / VCO:

Cycle switch = on, no trigger signal applied to Trig socket, no input signal: Voltage controlled LFO/VCO, the rise and fall times of the waveform are controlled like the slew up/down times above, including the shape of the falling/rising slope
the exp. CV input can be used like the CV input of a VCO or VCLFO, the response is exponential but not exactly 1V/oct.

Notes: Module A-188-1 is a so-called Bucket Brigade Device module.

BBDs have been used to delay audio signals before digital delays dethroned the BBD based effect units. But BBDs have some very unique advantages (or disadvantages dependent on the point of view) over the digital counterpart which result from the special properties of the BBDs. BBD circuits can be treated as a chain of Sample&Hold units (S&H) which pass on their voltages to the next S&H in the chain at each clock pulse.

In any case the sounds generated by module A-188-1 are very special. Typical applications are: Flanger, Chorus, Analog Delay or Karplus/Strong synthesis. But as the A-188-1 has a lot of very unique features (voltage controlled clock rate / delay time with extreme range, polarity switches for the CV inputs, feedback and BBD out/mix, clock and CV output of the high speed VCO, BBD clock input, feedback insert, feedback up to self-oscillation) a lot of unusual applications can be realized with the module (e.g. delay controlled by ADSR, envelope, random or sequencer with positive or negative effect).

The A-188-1 also has no built-in anti-aliasing filter in order not to limit the possibilities of the module. For this the CV out is intended.

This module comes without BBD circuit. The final adjustment is possible only with the BBD circuit used in the module. Electronic experience and measuring equipment (digital multi-meter, oscilloscope, frequency meter) are required.

Bucket brigade delay module - 30HP
Notes: A-188-2 is another module that is based on a so-called Bucket Brigade Device (BBD). If you are not familiar with BBDs please refer to the A-188-1. There you can find some details about this special type of circuits.

The main difference between A-188-1 and A-188-2 is the type of BBD circuit that leads to completely different module principles and sounds. The A-188-1 uses different single BBD chips with one signal input and one signal output only. In contrast the A-188-2 uses as so-called tapped BBD that has available six outputs - the so-called taps after the BBD stages 396, 662, 1194, 1726, 2790 and 3328. In the A-188-2 we use this special BBD circuit (MN3011) to obtain these module features:

The module has available two separate mixing sub-units. For both mixers the levels and polarities of each BBD output can be adjusted to obtain two different mixtures of the BBD outputs. A new type of potentiometers with centre detent and centre terminal is used for the BBD mixing controls to have a better feel for the neutral position. Each mixer has a wet/dry control at its output that allows choosing between the pure input signal (original), the BBD mix or anything in between. The two outputs can be treated as stereo outputs but it is also possible to use one of the outputs for other applications (details in the next paragraph).

The A-188-2 has a feedback section available that is very similar to the one in the A-188-1. But as we now have 6 different BBD outputs available 6 different feedback types are possible. The feedback input socket is normalled to the "396" output (not to "1194" as shown in the scheme, the front panel is correct). But by patching the feedback socket to any of the single output sockets another BBD tap can be used for the feedback to obtain different sounds. Even external feedback processing is possible (e.g. with a VCA for voltage controlled feedback). The feedback control has polarizer function, i.e. the neutral position is at the centre. Left from the centre the feedback signal is subtracted from the input signal, right from the centre it's added (negative/positive feedback). Even for this potentiometer the new version with centre detent is used.

A special feedback can be obtained if one of the mix outputs is used for the feedback function. In this case for each tap the positive or negative feedback share can be adjusted. This leads to multiple peaks and/or notches in the frequency response of the module.

For each tap of the BBD a separate output socket is available. These sockets can be used for changing the feedback loop - as mentioned above -, for voltage controlled mixing of the taps - e.g. with the voltage controlled mixer A-135 or other applications that require access to each single tap.

The A-188-2 uses the same high speed VCO (HSVCO) for the BBD clock as the A-188-1. The clock and consequently the delay time can be controlled manually (delay control) and by the two control voltage inputs CV1 and CV2. The sensitivity of CV1 is approximately 1V/oct. CV2 is equipped with a polarizer (a new type of potentiometers with centre detent). The HSVCO has a clock output available that is normalled to the clock input socket. These sockets can be used to link different BBD modules and to run them with the same clock. But even other applications with frequency dividers (e.g. A-163) or PLL (e.g. A-196) are conceivable. A voltage composed of the manual delay control, CV1 and CV2 is available at the CV out socket, e.g. to control an external clock suppression filter as the A-188-2 is not equipped with such a filter (same as for the A-188-1).

That way the VCOs A-110 or A-111 and the envelope generator A-140 can be controlled directly via the A-100 bus, i.e. it's not necessary to patch CV and Gate with cables between the front panels. In addition CV1 is buffered, i.e. even several VCOs can be controlled by the A-190-2 without the need of an additional bus buffer (e.g. A-185-1 or A-185-2).

A sensitive pressure sensor located below the position sensor generates a second control voltage CV2 that increases with higher pressure of the finger. Even for CV2 the scale is adjustable. A second gate signal is triggered as soon as the pressure exceeds a certain value. The gate threshold is adjustable at the front panel.

The sensors are located in a separate metal frame (length about 600 mm, width about 30 mm, height about 18 mm, weight: about 900 g, colour: silver-grey). The connection between the module and the sensor frame is made by a 4 pin cable (same as used for USB connections).

Typical applications:

- Trautonium manual, the string is replaced by the position sensor that is much easier to use and cheaper than the string. In combination with the Subharmonic Oscillator A-113, the Trautonium Filter A-104 and some auxiliary modules a complete Trautonium replica may be realized. In combination with the Quantizer A-156 exact semitone intervals are possible.

Dual envelope controlled VCA - 8HP
Notes: Module A-142-2 contains two envelope-controlled VCAs behind a front panel with 8 HP only. Each of the two sub-units is the combination of a simple AD/ADSR/AR envelope generator and a VCA. The type of envelope can be selected by means of a toggle switch:

- AD: Attack-Decay
- AR: Attack-Release
- ADSR: Attack-Decay-Sustain-Release with the limitation that Decay Time = Release Time and fixed Sustain level (factory setting 50%)

Each sub-unit provides these controls and in/outputs:

- LED control (envelope display)
- Attack (A), manual control
- Decay/Release (D/R), manual control
- Mode switch (AD, AR, ADSR)
- Audio level control (small control without knob)
- CVT Input (CVT = CV Time)
- CV Ducking input
- Attenuator for CVT (small control without knob)

The Envelope Output of version 1 has been cancelled for the benefit of the new CV Duck input. But there is an internal pin header available that has available the envelope signal (0...+10V) and the CV input of the VCA (0...+10V). Ex works the pins are shortened by a jumper but can be used for modifications (envelope output, VCA CV input).

By means of two internal jumpers for each sub-unit one can select which parameter(s) are controlled by the CVT input (e.g. D+R only or A only or A+D+R) and in which direction (i.e. if an increasing CVT shortens or stretches the time parameter in question). Two more jumpers are used for the optional bus access to the gate signal of the bus for each envelope.

CV Duck is an additional control input for the VCA that can be used to mute the VCA by means of an external control voltage. Beyond about +5V CV Duck the VCA is fully muted, in the range 0...+5V there is only a partial muting. Circuitry-wise the CV Duck signal is amplified by two, inverted and added to the internal envelope signal (0...+10V). The sum of both signals is used to control the VCA.

The time range of Attack/Decay/Release is about 1ms to 30s (can be modified by changing the value of a capacitor).

Applications:

Virtually in each patch one or more envelope/VCA combos together with a sound source are very useful, mainly for percussive sounds. Voltage control of the times and the ducking animates each performance.

The Dark Energy III is a monophonic stand-alone synthesizer with USB and MIDI interface. The sound generation and all modulation sources are 100% analog, only the USB/MIDI interface contains digital components. It is built into a rugged black metal case with wooden side plates. High quality potentiometers with metal shafts are used and each potentiometer is fixed to the case (no wobbly shafts and knobs). The distance between the controls is wider compared to A-100 modules, and knobs with vintage look are used.

Doepfer say that the main differences between II and III are an improved VCO (no warm-up period, additional triangle waveform, wider frequency range), resettable LFOs, improved ADSR and a lot of internal access points for DIYers.

Module A-156 is a Dual Control Voltage Quantizer. A quantizer converts a continuous control voltage in the range 0...+10V into a stepped output voltage in the same voltage range (i.e. only certain voltages occur). Normally 1/12 V steps are used to obtain semitone steps. Quantizer 2 of the A-156 allows has more sophisticated quantizing modes like major scale (i.e. only voltages corresponding to the major scale), minor scale, major chord, minor chord, fundamental + fifth and addition of seventh or sixth when chords are selected. Only those voltages appear at the CV output which comply with the selection rule (e.g. minor chord with seventh). The mode setting of quantizer 2 is done with 3 switches (1-0-1 type with middle position). From the factory quantizer 1 is working in the semitone mode. But there is a jumper on the pc board that can be changed so that even quantizer 1 uses the same scale as quantizer 2.

For each quantizer the following in/outputs are available:

- Control voltage input (CV In): The input for the continuous voltage to be quantized
- Control voltage output (CV Out): The output of the quantized voltage
- Trigger input (Trig.In): If this jack is left open the quantizer is working permanently. If a rectangle voltage is applied quantisation happens only at the rising edge of the signal (e.g. from an LFO or MIDI-to-Sync interface). Thus the quantizing can be synchronized with other events
- Trigger output (Trig.Out): Whenever a quantisation happens (i.e. a new voltage is generated at the CV Out) a positive pulse occurs at this output. It may be used to trigger an envelope generator (ADSR) or for triggering other modules (sequential switch A-151, trigger divider/sequencer A-160/161, trigger delay A-162, ...). If none of these functions are used the jack is left open

On top of that the A-156 is provided with a common transpose CV input having an additive effect on both quantizers. This input is quantized in semitone steps. A typical application is the transposition of a sequence generated by the A-155 by a second control voltage (e.g. coming from the MIDI-CV interface A-190).

Typical applications:

- Quantizing the CV sequence generated by an A-155 (semitone, only major scale, only minor scale and so on)
- Quantizing the voltage coming from the Trautonium Manual / Ribbon Controller A-198, Theremin A-178 or Light-to-CV module A-179 to get accurate semitones or major/minor scale tones
- Arpeggio-like effects with LFO, random, noise, envelope generators as CV sources (for negative or symmetrical voltages an offset must be added, e.g. with the offset/attenuator module A-129-3, to obtain positive voltages for the A-156 input)

The A-188-1 series bases on a so-called bucket brigade device (BBD) that has been used in the pseudo-digital BBD-delays.

The version with 4096 stages provides a delay time of 8.19 - 4096 ms.

The module is not an entire delay but only its core with all anomalies (e.g. cross talk of the internal clock frequency), and its very independent spacey and raw sound.

There are modulation possibilities with invertible polaritiy, a dry/wet control, feedback up to self-oscillation and a feedback loop with insert.
