Review: So, how long have you been waiting for this one to drop? The answer really depends on two things - whether you've just been waiting for new long form material from the UK IDM legends Autechre, or whether you've been waiting for Autechre to put a proper album together that stays true to the principles and format of a 'proper album', as this does.

Either way let's just say Signs has been some time in the making, and it's definitely a case of payoff for patience. For the most part it's the waves of space age melody that really stand out, tracks like 'Esc Desc' seem to fill the room with bands of sci-fi harmony. Of course there's plenty of glitch and bleep here, too - the stepping 'Au14' is a case in point - alongside rumbling, bass-heavy business like 'Si100', where playful drips of percussion create a juxtaposition of innocence and menace.

Review: Wayfaring sound explorer Sw. is best known for his stellar stints on SUED, Acido and Apollo (often alongside Svn) but he's also got firm roots in the illustrious world of Kimochi. Area's oddball label is a perfect fit for Sw.'s roaming, inquisitive approach, where scuffed sound design exploration sits alongside subdued garage and red-lining electronica faces off with melancholic '80s hauntology. For the bold DJs, there are certainly potential bangers folded into the mysterious fabric of this record, but as with all things Kimochi the overall mood looks past functional dance music while celebrating many of its tropes.

Review: Vancouver has long been a hotbed for electronic talent, a city with a score that's as sharp as it is deep, noises that feel submerged in the post-rave, post-techno, post-ambient and post-whatever else underground we've now grown accustomed to as the melting pot of modern dance culture. Khotin isn't letting his hometown down here, nor Ghostly International, the label carrying this release.

The downtempo, space-y 'Heavyball' comes with a particularly pleasing sort of crunch to the beat. Its running mate, 'Groove 32', follows up with a low-stepping groove. 'Ivory Tower' briefly resurfaces into jazz-inflected, dusty house-influenced downbeat. 'Outside Light' takes us into complex, melodic ambient places perhaps most definitive of what this record sounds like overall, and certainly in keeping with its predecessor, Beautiful You.

Review: Canadian minimal veteran Tomas Jirku has been a little quiet of late, but now he makes a welcome and unexpected return with something quite different for Silent Season. You can hear echoes of his earlier work in the soundscapes he's sculpted across Touching The Sublime, as high-definition sonic manipulation draws on his experience and eye for detail in wielding music technology, but rather than creating pointillist rhythmic structures, he's more concerned with billowing clouds of ambience. It's easy to draw parallels with the likes of Tim Hecker, but there's space for more techno-oriented productions in the midst of the maelstrom. Epic in scope and powerfully rendered, this is an album that will feed your head for a long time to come.

Review: There isn't a more hit-packed Kraftwerk album than The Man Machine. First released in 1978 and here reissued on red vinyl accompanied by a fresh booklet of vintage images, the album boasts some of the German band's best loved songs, including 'The Robots', cheery sing-along 'The Model', the staggeringly good 'Neon Lights', and the bubbly title track. It shows how good the album is that such gems as 'Metropolis' and the picturesque 'Spacelab' - cuts that most other bands would kill to be able to write - tend to be ignored or overlooked. If you love electronic music, you need a copy of The Man Machine in your collection.

Review: You still won't find a more perfect electro album than Kraftwerk's Computer World, and it was the album that pretty much invented the style. That much is clear from this fresh 2020 reissue, which presents the iconic 1981 set on translucent yellow vinyl, accompanied by a slick booklet of fitting Kraftwerkian imagery. While 'Computer World', 'Pocket Calculator' and 'Computer Love' are near perfect electro-pop songs, it's the sheer heaviness and funkiness of the B-boy friendly beats on 'Home Computer', 'It's More Fun To Compute' and, most famously, 'Numbers' that make it such an essential. Put simply, Computer World still sounds like the future.

Review: It would be fair to say that the West Yorkshire city of Bradford is not known as a hotbed of drowsy post-rock-meets-trippy-ambient experimentation. Yet it was in the former textiles powerhouse (and sometime home of British bass music pioneers Unique 3) that Gavin Millar and Thomas Ragsdale recorded their latest album as Worriedaboutsatan, 'Europa'. As you'd expect given their track record, it's a wonderfully atmospheric, sonically detailed and ultimately ear-pleasing affair, with the duo offering up an inspired mixture of hypnotic, textured, groove-driven workouts (see the shoegaze techno haziness of 'Who Is A Hunter' and the near-Balearic bliss of 'Cloaking'), poignant and bittersweet electronic soundscapes (the bubbly and melancholic 'Vex' and deliciously layered ambient epics (sublime opener 'Sunk' and slow-motion closer 'Shift').

Review: Detroit's Jay Daniel can no longer be referred to as a protegee. The Watusi High boss is very much a talent unto his own after forming a small but superb discography in the last few years. His latest outing is another exquisite mixture of his very real drum playing skills and an ability to coax real feeling out of his lush synths. After the ambiance of 'Muse,' 'Solo' sinks into a late night vibe with glowing pads and wooden hits making for a perfectly reflective mood. 'Dew' cuts more loose into ticketing drum work that is raw and off-grid, but again soften but those gaze-inducing pads, and 'Cherry' closes out with crunchy, dance floor ready grooves.

Review: "Undoubtedly this album is one of the important discs of Japanese new wave and German krautrock history. ""Phew"" is Japanese female vocalist who is well known as a member of legendary punk band ""Aunt Sally"". She has been active in a wide range of projects and collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Seiichi Yamamoto, DAF, and Neubauten etc.
This was originally released in 1981 as her solo debut album, made in legendary Conny's Studio with Conny Plank, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit from CAN. Not only highly demanded by vinyl collectors worldwide, but also this album is outstanding in the dimension of the music. By Plank's engineering, their never fading sound-making is still innovative and no one can stand next. Now we present it as reissued LP with OBI, you can listen to the monumental work of her career in vinyl after more than 30 years since the last time it was reissued for the first time."

Review: Autobhan, the 1974 album that began Kraftwerk's ascent to legendary status, is still capable of making the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. The headline attraction remains the absorbing, mesmerising, 22-minute title track, a musical whizz down an imaginary three-lane highway that's as evocative and atmospheric as they come. That said, the album's lesser-celebrated, more experimental flip-side tracks (and in particular the jaunty 'Kometenmelodie 2'), are also inspired. Here it gets the 2020 reissue treatment via a tasty blue vinyl pressing that comes packaged with a 12-page booklet of historic photos and typically utilitarian imagery.

"Loop Research" showcases a singular artist unbound by tempo and at the top of their game.

Review: Kraftwerk first toyed with the idea of making a concept album based on the Tour De France in the early 1980s, so it was probably inevitable that the cycling-mad group would eventually deliver on that promised. First released in 2003 and now reissued in re-mastered form on red and blue vinyl, the album is the most techno-centric set in the band's discography. While it still boasts their usual recurring melodic themes, tuneful motifs and robotic vocoder vocals, many of its hypnotic and euphoric tracks (particularly the three-part title track that dominates the first half of the album) are far weightier and more club-focused than their earlier releases. For that reason alone, it's worth a place in your collection.

Review: To our ears, 1975's Radioactivity is Kraftwerk's most ghostly and otherworldly album. It was famously their first set made entirely with electronic instruments - some home-made - and now sounds like a bridge between the more krautrock-style hypnotism of the earlier Autobahn and the slicker, more tuneful albums that followed it. In other words, it's as weird, alien and otherworldly as it is ground-breaking and pop-leaning. This 2020 reissue is well worth picking up, not least because it comes pressed on translucent yellow vinyl and comes accompanied by a glossy, 16-page booklet full of iconic Kraftwerk images.

Never Gonna Leave New York City (Record Store Day 2020)
Cat: ANAS 1201. Rel: 14 Oct 20
  1. Never Gonna Leave New York City (5:23)
  2. Willie Mays, Boom For Real (5:58)
Review: New York art-house outfit Gray might not be the most famous to come from America's biggest, loudest and proudest city, but their oeuvre is definitely worth taking the time to discover. Fronted by the more recognisable name of Jean-Michel Basquait, as this two-tracker goes to show the outfit can teach us all a thing or two about how to encapsulate the life that exists on your doorstep.

Comprising previously unreleased and very rare work, the centre point is 'Never Gonna Leave New York City', which could almost be seen as a counterargument to LCD Soundsystem's 'New York, I Love You'. There we had James Murphy lamenting the loss of the old dirty side of the Big Apple, but here Basquait is celebrating that chaos and intensity as it still existed back in the 1980s. A vivid spoken word homage to scenes we all know from movies, if not reality.

Review: Nicolas Jaar has been one of electronic music's most consistently hard to predict and innovative artists for a decade. The Chilean-American now offers up a full length on his own Other People label that he says is for inner battles. It is a work of masterful atmosphere that can be at times dense and gloomy, at others ethereal, and was written in isolation away from any form of stimulation-inducing drink and drugs. A constantly shifting sound means listeners are slipped in and out of reality as it plays out, making it tense, sombre and at times furious. This is yet another audacious record from the unrestrained mind of Nicolas Jaar.

Review: It would be fair to say that 1977's Trans-Europe Express album was one Kraftwerk found their niche. More polished and accessible than its predecessors, the album's blend of futuristic synth-pop songs, trance-inducing electronic grooves and recurring melodic motifs became a blueprint that they would later return to again and again. The B-side suite of train-travel inspired tracks ('Trans-Europe Express' to 'Endless Endless') remains one of their most evocative, atmospheric and perfectly constructed musical works, while opener 'Europe Endless' is arguably one of the most beautiful and life-affirming tracks in their canon. This 2020 edition, pressed to clear vinyl, boasts brilliantly re-mastered sound and a bonus booklet containing iconic images of the band from the period

He has contributed to the recordings of Radiohead, collaborated on composition with Laurie Spiegel and John Luther Adams, and performed as an improviser with Dean Blunt and Micachu. His in-depth understanding of the relationship with classical cello is met with his exploration and pleasure in electronic audio and synthesis. Two years after the previous full-length Shelley's on Zenn, he returns to RVNG Intl for his third release entitled Skins N Slime. The 11 compositions pursue an experimental direction influenced by the architecture of Gordon Matta-Clark, the musical numerology of Hanne Darboven and the electronics of Enno Velthuys, as well as the experience gained during the numerous live shows in support of Thom Yorke.

Featuring five expressions of haunting and desolate ambient music, But All Spiked is meditative whilst at once dynamic, and undoubtedly the most absolute realisation of his tendencies and processes captured thus far. Here he skillfully applies compositional practices towards his particular context and oeuvre.

Review: Russian electronic music is most often characterised as dark, bleak, paranoid and desolate. But that's wrong, as various labels have proven in recent times. Andrey Kurokhtin aka Shine Grooves now continues to smash those stereotypes with his bubbly, melodic and happy house music on this Sakskobing debut. Fusing cosmic ambiance, thoughtful synth work and the spirit of early deep house from the Midwest, these tracks all sing and speak to a new age hippiness as much as a heady underground club goer. 'High In The Mountains' is a particularly gorgeous and thought provoking affair before the more blistering grooves of 'Wild Pattern.'

Review: After some great ones by Desert Sound Colony and label co-heads Alec Falconer and Tiago Walter, Ba Dum Tish are back with another curious release by the enigmatic Active Research. It's the sound of the '90s underground on the A side, with the dark drum & bass epic 'Howweryuu' and its Optical / Alex Reece influence, followed by the UK electronica throwback sounds on 'Apexxx North'. On the flip, things take a more abstract turn on the deep and dystopian electro bass journey "Collection Of Noises" followed by the sublime ambient bliss of "Loosen The Moorings".

Review: Kraftwerk never bothered releasing a standard 'greatest hits' album. Instead, in 1991 they offered up The Mix, a set of brand-new digital recordings of some of their best-loved tracks. It received a lukewarm reception at the time, in part because it was marketed and reviewed as a remix album (which it isn't), but it's actually a thrill-a-minute romp that has formed the basis of their live shows ever since. It contains some fantastic re-arranged takes on such familiar favourites as 'Radioactivity', 'The Robots', 'Computer Love' and 'Autobahn', the latter of which is quite radically different (and, surprisingly, jazzier). This time round, it comes presented on ice-white vinyl and comes accompanied by a smart looking 20-page booklet.

Review: London-based Discrepant follows reviews up some great ones by the likes of Etrusca 3D, Only Now x Orogen and Charbel Haver to introduce a new project Called Lagoss comprised of label boss Goncalo F. Cardoso and Tenerife-based Mladen Kurajica and Dani Tupper aka Tupperwear. Lagoss borrow from the exotica playbook of ideas and provide over three dozen sonic shapshots of trouble in paradise. Off-kilter grooves, imaginary soundtracks, exotic polyrhythms and intelligent dance music collide on this curious release. As the label so eloquently stated themselves "no armchair xylophone grooves here."
