Mystic Brew

Funk
  1. Mystic Brew (part 1)
  2. Mystic Brew (part 2)
Review: Taken from a trio of 45s from the Vong45 record label, here the West Loop collective remake some of their favourite soul, jazz and funk tracks. This release in the series has West Loop remaking the original foundation to the A Tribe Called Quest masterpiece 'Electric Relaxation' - 'Mystic Brew' as recorded by Blue Note keyboard player Ronnie Foster in 1972. Featuring all live instrumentation including some fierce Hammond organ vamps, a deep rich bassline and a vibrant electric piano solo, West Loop revitalise the jazziness of the original on 'Part 1' but move into a funkier direction with 'Part 2' on the flip. Perfect 45 territory for the funk and hip hop DJs.

  1. Acid Agah (original 1994 dubplate mix)
  2. Rani (edit)
  3. Nachdi Drums (edit)
  4. Balle Shava (edit)
Review: The Masaala label are laying claim to a unique curio from the '90s here, unearthing the forgotten sounds of Cutmaster Singh from Leicester. This unsung DJ legend was amongst those trying to fuse acid house and bhangra, and on this 12" we're treated to a selection of edits that do a mighty fine job of crossing the cultural divide to bring the infectious energy of Indian music into a dancefloor context. First up is a dubplate from 1994 titled 'Acid Agah', which rides a bubbling 303 and resplendent strings to create a jaw-dropping showpiece. 'Rani' is steeped in bashy '80s drums and more of that lysergic throbbing, offset by a stunning female vocal, while 'Nachdi Drums' unsurprisingly leans in hard on percussion to whip up a frenetic energy that is as much techno as it is bhangra. 'Balle Shava' takes things back to a kind of new beat freakiness which will appeal to old-skool diggers looking for something spicy in their sets.

  4. Can't Run Away From Yourself (Desert Sound Colony remix) (5:56)
Review: The garage heat continues to fly out of Instinct as Burnski's 2-step-tinted alias gets some serious remix treatment. Holloway takes control on the A side with a remix and dub of 'Can't Run Away From Yourself' that ups the ante in intricate beat craft while maintaining a rolling moody atmosphere and a walloping serving of wobbly bass. 0113 tackles 'Badman' and has fun flinging the core elements around the mix with gleeful abandon, making an utterly rude dancehall wrecker in the process. Desert Sound Colony steps up on the B2 to create a distinctive, breakstep-leaning version of 'Can't Run Away From Yourself' that will get bodies jumping and jiving all over the shop.

  1. Hot Lovin' (Don't Stop, Don't Quit) (3:39)
  2. Shack Attack (3:20)
Review: More from the cheeky scamps behind the Disco Bits label, an imprint whose releases regularly blur the boundaries between re-editing, re-making and remixing. Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. As the title suggests, 'Shack Attack' cheekily blends elements from Banbarra classic 'Shack Up' and B-52s hit 'Love Shack', adding some other choice samples to create a tidy, well-made mash-up that sounds tailor-made for disco dancefloors.

  1. Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De Indio) (3:23)
  2. Rio Babilonia (4:30)
Review: Astonishingly, this is the 80th instalment in Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series. Predictably, this edition is every bit as essential as its predecessors. It boasts two superb 1980s recordings by one of the true legends of Brazilian 20th century music, Jorge Ben. On the A-side you'll find the lengthily titled 'Curmin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Erza Dia De Indio), a synth-splashed samba-funk tribute to the indigenous tribes of Brazil that was first featured on Ben's 1981 album Bem-Vinda Amizade. Turn to the flip for 'Rio Babilonia', a killer Brazilian boogie joint rich in squelchy synth bass, heady Latin percussion and fiery horn arrangements courtesy of the late, great Lincoln Olivetti.

  1. Jorge Ben - "Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)" (4:09)
  2. Cauby Peixoto & Jorge Ben - "Dona Culpa" (3:25)
Review: Mr Bongo's excellent Brazil.45 series digs deeper into the legacy of Jorge Ben, one of Brazil's most famous musical exports and an enduring samba king. Opening up is 'Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)' which was originally on his 1980 album Alo Alo, Como Vai? It's a modern sound, with disco inflections and big wind sections, but also some trademark Ben playfulness in the lyrics which speak of flying saucers and angels. O the flip, things slow down and get more steamy and sensuous on 'Dona Culpa' from his Cauby! Cauby!' album of the same year. Two sides, two styles, one irrepressible artist.

Review: Miles Away are always on a mission to unearth new old gems. Their tireless work now gives rise to a pair of big hitters from The Grooms, a band who only ever flashed this one single back in the 1970s. It came originally on a little-known label in Norfolk, VA headed up by Noah H. Biggs, called Shiptown, and was during the peak era of Motown, Atlantic and Stax. Thankfully the label boss saw its potential. The super charged 'Slow Down' on the A side is wrought with emotion and on the reverse is a more moody and heartfelt ballad called 'I Deserve A Little Bit More.'

Review: Some two years after last treating us to a tasty trio of re-edits, mystery scalpel fiend JB Edits delivers more hot-to-trot reworks via the hilariously named Sosilly Edits imprint. The standout for us is A-side 'Cosmic Intergalactic Nebula Boogie', a tight and tidy, club-focused rearrangement of a suitably spacey, late 1970s disco romp that comes stacked high with soaring orchestration, good grooves, extra-percussive sections for the dancers and plenty of spacey sounding synthesizer flourishes. Over on the B-side, 'Leapy Looker' is a languid but impactful dance through sweet and soulful disco pastures, while 'Men Skating With Men' is a roller-disco ready rearrangement of a lesser-known electro-boogie gem.

Review: Mathew Herbert's cult Accidental Jnr sub-label is all about left of centre, late night club sounds with innovation at their core. Behind this next one is Raf Rundell and mix engineer James Rand as Part Nails. They concoct a brilliant mix of wonderfully weird loops, fractured vocals, found sounds and then chuck them all together and see what happens. In the case of 'Yassassin' it is a sure to be anthemic rhythms workout that is brilliantly off-balance. 'Motherrr' is a slow and sludgy techno workout that continually whirrs and malfunctions and 'Wobbler' is just that.

Review: Chicago bluesman Billy Boy Arnold was already a decade into his lengthy career when he first recorded and released 'You're My Girl' on legendary jazz label Prestige Records' blues-focused offshoot, Bluesville. Here the record gets a deserved reissue, introducing a new generation to one of the singer-songwriter and harmonica player's greatest recordings. Wild, free, low-slung and deliciously groovy, the track's numerous neat musical details naturally include some superb harmonica solos from the man himself. He also blows up a storm on up-tempo blues B-side 'School Time', an undeniably heavier and more low-slung affair that's every bit as infectious as the A-side.

Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

Igor Gonya & Crack D get busy with the filters on 'Two-Piece Orchestra' and The Funk District take a more delicate edit approach to stomping peak-time burner 'Watcha Gonna Do'. Soon he'll finally release a follow up, Decision Time, but first he's treating us to a teaser single, 'The Spell'. Webster's vocal and dub mixes - the former featuring the seductive spoken word vocals of poet Ingrid Chavez - are typically immersive, ultra-deep house affairs that combine analogue electronic instrumentation with hazy, crackling aural textures that come courtesy of surprise collaborator Burial, who cites Webster's sound design as a major influence. Arguably the most striking mix though comes from that man Burial, whose A-side interpretation is drowsy, deep, crackly and irresistibly opaque: an artistic marriage made in heaven and then some.

Power of Attorney was a rehabilitative project of Theodore "Ted" Wing, activities director at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution, who opened a studio in the prison for inmates to get creative. They originally released this one for Nicetown in 1973 - only 500 were pressed and sold direct from prison - and even Discogs hasn't got any recent sales records for it. The high speed jailbird funk of 'Changing Man' is a tale of redemption and is backed with the achingly soulful 'I'm Just Your Clown'.

On the A-side, 'Aargh Money' works around a seriously funked-up rhythm section and a choir extolling the virtues of working together. It's bombastic and elastic, just the right thing to get the limbs greased up for a heated hoedown. 'Little Looks' takes things rougher and tougher, with one of those Italo basslines so nasty it borders on proto-acid. The vocals are divine here too - smouldering come hither lines that amp up the intensity of the track to 11.

Well now, here they are, after plenty of high profile plays from the likes of BBC 6 Music's Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show And The Huey Morgan Show. The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra is a project from ATA label bosses Neil Innes & Pete Williams as well a multi-instrumentalist and arranger Steve Parry. There's much to admire across the EP's four formidable tracks, from the off-kilter Afro-Latin polyrhythms, tight stabs, wonky vocal snippets and deep bass of title track 'Choices', to the undulating tech-house glitch-funk of 'Implications' and the deep, sub-heavy early morning hypnotism of 'Liquid Fluid'. Arguably best of all though is A2 cut 'Con Amore, Como Diz', a fine fusion of densely layered Brazilian drums, fluttering and spacey synthesizer riffs, and jumpy, body-popping tech-house electronics.

There are beats to be enjoyed on 'Blues 909', but you've never heard the totemic techno machine sound as smooth and mellow as it does right here.

Review: A few weeks ago, the sneaky Soul Masters label launched via a must-have "45" featuring two 1960s soul bombs from Welsh sex-machine Mr Jones. For this sequel, the limited-edition imprint has dipped into the back catalogue of premier Motown legends and chosen two killer covers of songs first made famous by other artists on the iconic soul label's roster. On the A-side you'll find their storming version of Stevie Wonder hit 'Uptight (Everything's All Right)', a take that's just as stomping and horn-heavy as the more familiar original, with the added bonus of smoother soul vocals from the ladies and first time on 7 inch vinyl. Turn to the flip for their interpretation of Barrett Strong hit 'Money (That's What I Want)', a more fuzzy and sax-laden affair of a song that was famously also covered by the Beatles on With The Beatles.

Funk
  1. Move On Up (3:53)
  2. Give Me Your Love (3:32)
Review: If you've not already picked up a copy of Mutaksuku Records' superb reissue of two of reggae musician Devon Russell's greatest Curtis Mayfield covers, we'd suggest grabbing one of these Juno exclusive white vinyl versions, which also happens to ship with a tasty wooden "45" adaptor. You may already know Russell's incredible '84 version of 'Move on Up', which re-imagines it as a languid, post-disco reggae-soul anthem that just oozes sun-soaked positivity. On this seven-inch, it comes backed by something equally as essential: the artist's lesser-known 1993 take on 'Give Me Your Love', which turns the much-loved song into a colourful, synth-laden trip through Balearic reggae territory. In a word: essential.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. D (6:50)
  2. E (6:41)
  3. F (7:03)
  4. G (6:50)
Review: Burnski and Michael James ignited their Relic collaboration last year with a classy drop on oge, and they're back again on Constant Black with some devastatingly bumping minimal tech house. There's a hi-tech finish to this whole EP, from the moody lead cut "D" to the slippery, funkified "E". The mix is clean as a whistle and maximized for every little production wriggle and shapely bassline to cut through on any system, even in the hazier clouds of pad hovering over "F". Don't skip over the B2 though - as with all the best EPs there's gold to be savoured in the crafty machine shuffle and rubbery b-line of "G".

Deep House
  1. Kai Alce - "Hear The Waves" (5:28)
  2. Demuir - "Furacao Dento" (7:15)
  3. Nick Holder - "America" (6:28)
  4. 83 West - "My Sound (redux)" (6:56)
Review: All proceeds and profits from this new drop on Selections will be donated to Black Lives Matter charities, making it an even more appealing offer beyond the sheer quality of the house heads gathered together here. The mighty Kai Alce leads the charge with the sweet and bumping 'Hear The Waves', which is followed up by the punchy but warm 'Furacao Dento' by Demuir. Nick Holder opens the B side up with a killer slice of broken beat house, all crooked percussion locked into a deep, rolling groove. 83 West finishes the record off with a teasing, slow-release heater that keeps the energy simmering throughout - a masterfully executed cut to hold the dancefloor under a spell.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

  1. Ginger Biscuit (4:52)
  2. Long Player (8:12)
  3. Shimmer (6:37)
  4. U Be Dick (6:23)
Review: Aubrey's status as a pillar of underground UK techno comes into focus with this reissue of a 1995 classic from the Solid Groove archives. 'Ginger Biscuit' is a riotous party starter, riding a funked up loop and feverish percussion to make for techno perfection. 'Long Player' is a trippier affair awash with heavy reverb, pads and submerged acid bleeps. 'Shimmer' goes even further out with some shimmering dub techno chords riding elongated filter sweeps for pure eyes closed transcendence. 'U Be Dick' seals the deal with a micro-dub excursion that nudges towards house territory with soaring synth strings to boot. Seminal stuff.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Moon Crab (4:32)
  2. Absence (3:47)
Review: Italian duo HUMA are comprised of Alberto Lincetto and Stefano Cosi, and they make their debut appearance on Angis Music with this beautifully crafted slice of contemporary nu jazz and neo soul, packaged on a perfect formed 7". 'Moon Crab' is an instrumental, boogie-tinted cut which rides an easy drum machine groove as the vessel for some seriously smooth synth flexing. "Absence" is a dual-vocal trip into mellow, piano-led reflection that should appeal to fans of Jill Scott et al, stirring up that smoky, melancholy feeling that the best soul music achieves. Keep an eye on this duo, because on the back of this stellar single there's surely some great music to come.
