Review: Casinoboy makes a triumphant return to Duca Bianco with a sparkling EP that once again shows his studio mastery. Previously featuring alongside luminaries like Rune Lindbaek and Khidja on a well-received compilation, Casinoboy's latest kicks off with 'Honesty' which is a blend of Balearic and breaks that brings a shuffle-and-wiggle experience with uplifting samples and an old-school UK rap edge. 'This Feeling' has a catchy Street Soul feel, while 'Searos' mixes up ambient sounds and Spanish Guitar to evoke the essence of the White Isle. Closing with 'Astral Go Go,' really pumps the party in ways only he knows how.

Review: There is very little info out there about the Milkcrate Mondays label but we do know that their only other release last year was well hyped and quickly sold out. This second one is likely to follow suit. It comes from Able and is a dusty house cut with an old school feel thanks to the gentle breaks that power it along as a signature smoky soul vocal from Amy Winehouse brings plenty of emotion to a-side cut 'Winehouse Magic'. On the flip is 'Drake Punk' which pairs Daft Punk filter house loops with auto-tuned vocals all sure to bring some fun to the 'floor.

Review: Dabeull, the current scene's utmost favourite 'danceable funk' purveyor, is back with bang in the form of an all-analog production, full-length LP. Analog Love enlists the help of a string of vocalists and production affiliates - including Holybrune, Dezzy Hollow, Reva DeVito, Rude Jude, and Jordan Lee - to amount to a glitzing, golden, effulgent nighttime set of funk intuits. From the lead single 'Body Heat' to the closing confabulations of 'Fabulous Kisses', every piece here is a latent hit, dripping in neon liquid and well-rounded, sawn-off textures, the latter of which was notably achieved by using the mixing console historically used for Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' at the mixing stage.

Another great one is Timmy Regisford's 'Funa' (instrumental mix), a deep house workout that is both melodic and smooth, while Joe Claussell's 'A Deeper Grace' (LP version) is a classy house track infused with jazzy notes. Overall, this compilation is a must-listen for fans of deep house music - you definitely get your money's worth with this packed release.

Review: MIA's latest single, Crime of Passion, picks up where her last hit left off, delivering another dose of sultry funk with producer Gil Masuda. With deep bass and a groovy vibe, MIA's silky voice weaves a tale of compassion and desire over an up-tempo 80s-tinged boogie beat. The track's infectious energy is sure to get listeners on the dance floor, with lyrics like "Am I your shining diamond, baby, kryptonite?" enticing them further. On the flip side, 'Love Bug' offers a chill roller skating jam with lush Rhodes chords and warm synth tones, perfect for anyone who's ever been in love. Released on Love Touch Records, this single hints at the possibility of a long-awaited debut album from MIA in the near future.

Review: Salentino's You'll Be In Paradise', originally released in 1985, receives a revitalising treatment on Giorgio Records, offering four distinct versions that cater to aficionados of disco and nu-disco, with a touch of Italo-disco nostalgia. Side-1 kicks off with the iconic vocal version, serving as an underground classic in the realm of Italo-house. Its infectious groove and euphoric melodies transport listeners to a dancefloor paradise. The Franz Scala remix on the same side elevates the track with a more serious bassline and a heightened focus on the instrumental elements, offering a fresh perspective while retaining the essence of the original. On the B-side, the instrumental version allows the mesmerizing melodies to take center stage, providing a captivating journey for those who prefer to let the music speak for itself. The Casionova edit rounds off the record with a rendition that stays true to the original's tempo while delving deeper into the melodic elements, creating a harmonious balance between nostalgia and contemporary sensibilities. Salentino's You'll Be In Paradise EP showcases the enduring appeal of Italo-disco while breathing new life into a classic track for modern audiences.

As is often the way with music as quality and neat as this, they keep a generally low profile but their edits are deft and crispier-than-crisp, with their instrumentals - here titled simple 'Boogie A' and 'Boogie B' - sounding production-sharp enough to cut glass. Bordering on freestyle and funk, these are short slices of beat dazzlement, and also function as perfect songwriter fuel too.

Review: Gino Soccio's 'Dancer' is a standout record when thinking about the early days of disco, mainly thanks to the lush synths crafted by the Canadian producer. His magic on the keys helped set the sonic agenda of those times and led him to six hit singles and four albums. After all that success, though, he vanished in 1984 and left behind only a fine musical legacy. Random Vinyl pays homage to it with a revamped release of 'Remember,' featuring Fred Ventura's vocals and Ivy Sharrard's French verses. Producer Marc Hartman delivers a 2024 rendition, while Flemming Dalum adds a banging remix to make this a great tribute.

Un Sogno Per La Testa
Review: Since launching in 2018, the Belpaese imprint has delivered a string of must-check EPs featuring re-edits of old Italian songs and instrumentals. It's a bit of a niche pursuit, but given the country's contribution to dance music culture over the years one that makes total sense. Volume ten in the series arrives with two sweat-soaked cut-jobs to enjoy. 'Ancora Un Baccio' is a quirky and eccentric Italo-disco number that boasts both rubbery slap-bass (including some energetic soloing) and surging electronic bass, alongside suitably camp lead vocals and heady vocalisations. 'Un Sogno Per La Testa' is a bit more Balearic minded, with the shadowy scalpel fiends making merry with what sounds like a holiday-ready 1980s pop song full of glistening guitar licks, jazz-funk bass and unfussy beats.

Review: The seventh edition of Disco Records' aptly named catalogue comes as a four-track selection of wonky edited delights. They may be of dubious origin, but such is the purpose of the disco edit form: to draw attention to the craftmanship of disco over its more surface-level aesthetic signifiers. That said, we do know of a few sources: Sabata's 'Man For My Lady' (1980) is the opening highlight, and though very subtle changes have been made - in the form of various brightenings and fattenings - this record is more than enough to keep our affective responses to this label's Discotechnical assembly line going.

The album's infectious rhythms and catchy melodies have made it a staple of the genre, and its classic hit 'Ma Quale Idea' remains a dance floor favorite. Review: Music duo North 90 reclaim an unfortunate term inherited by much 90s and 00s Eurodance, 'Eurotrash', with an inspired EP released through London's M.A.D. Records. Its four slabs of soulful cheese - kitsch, edging-on-twee, breaksy Euro-house - are lent a modern twist by the pair, proving the immense possibility of an unfairly derided sound. Opener 'Euro Trash' is the obvious lead, but then there's also the low-slanging dreamworlds of 'We Can Only Imagine' and 'Isabell', which recall sonic contexts when Europe indeed wasn't the site of scorn, but rather admiration for its projection of style.

Review: Dave Lee's "AC Soul Symphony" alias has been releasing delectable and sultry disco since 2005 but reached his magnus opus in 2023 with the release of the "Metamorphosis" LP. Here we find two tracks handpicked from the album and delivered, for the first time, in a 7" format. The single starts much as the album does with the track "Windy City Theme", beautifully scored, recorded, and produced legato strings envelope the track, punctuated with horns and vocals reminiscent of a Love Unlimited Orchestra production. This version of the track has been rearranged, speeding up the pacing of the track and reaching the juicy parts in a really satisfying way. On the flip side we have the title track from the album "Metamorphosis", which is the first time the vocal version has been made available on Vinyl. A bass laden intro gives ways to glistening pianos and those signature strings (have we mentioned how good the strings are?). A more laid back and seductive track than the A side, but no less appealing. Again, due to the limitations of the 7" format, "Metamorphosis" has been expertly rearranged with loving care and attention.

Review: A warm welcome back to Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project, traditionally a revivalist Afro-disco vehicle best known for 2015 dancefloor smash 'Spies Are Watching Me'. 'Fache', featuring Pat Kalla, explores similar sonic territory, with punchy Afrobeat horns, woozy chords and crunchy clavinet licks rising above a low-slung, hypnotic, dub disco-meets-Afro-boogie groove. It comes accompanied by a fine, effects-laden instrumental dub and a trio of similarly tasty bonus cuts: the warming, early garage-house and deep house influenced 'Trouble Travel' (featuring Jai-Nah), the languid, soulful and Latin-influenced 'Too Young To Die (featuring Olivia)' and the Afro-speckled disco-goes-jazz-funk loveliness of 'Trop Jeune Pour Sa'.

Why Can't We Live Together (Ben Liebrand T-Connection remix)
Why Can't We Live Together (1981 Bootleg)
Review: Timmy Thomas' Why Can't We Live Together is a timeless soul classic that got some remix treatment in 1981. Originally released in 1972, the track's message of unity and love is still relevant today, and Liebrand's remixes gave it a modern disco edge that appealed to new listeners fans of dance music. The story, according to Ben Liebrand himself, goes: "This is a mashup/bootleg mix of Timmy Thomas and T-Connection's At Midnight made by yours truly. The Belgian record company 'took' this mix, had this Mike sing on top of it and released it as their own. When people started to realize the 'origins' of this mix, the company re-recorded everything, fed the new versions amongst the illegal versions, and thus conveniently obscured the amount of 'bootleg-versions' sold." If you're a fan of Timmy Thomas or Ben Liebrand, or if you're just looking for some rare disco and dance music, then you need to check out these mixes.

Review: The Very Polish Cut-Outs Sampler series continues to represent the party-focused arm of one of the most switched-on labels in Polish house music. On the tenth volume of the edit series we get no less than seven upfront joint to sink our teeth into, as Justyna S dices up dusty drums and funky guitar licks for the seriously infectious 'Oka Za Oko' and Zenit brings some big-room disco sass to bear on 'Dzisiaj Jutro'. The flip side sidles into deeper territory with the low-slung delights of Niko's smoky version of 'Na Jezykach' by Ka-ya-h. By the time we reach the final track - EXPO 2000's dreamy downtempo joint 'Fantazja', the pitch has slid down even lower and we're positively kicking back in the backroom with distinctive styles unique to this most esteemed of labels.

Review: Back in 2019, Emotional Rescue began a series where it licensed some all-time favourites, remastered them and pressed them up with new remixes by modern producers. It now draws to a close after many fine instalments with early 80s band The Impossible Dreamers. Their cult 'Spin' arrives here with an epic nine-minute extended reversion that is heavy on the dub and percussion and also an even more dubcentric reprise from regular label artist Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys and Noid fame, her under his NAD guise. There is plenty of raw and raucous rhythm to this 12" that will enliven any dancefloor and round out this series in style.

Review: Francesca Macri's System Olympia project takes the best bits of Italo, disco, boogie and house and distills them into something fresh and sincere. As her cover art unfailingly spells out, this is sexy music first and foremost, and that intention charges her productions with a heart which positively radiates out of the speakers. Her Okay Nature label has been a reliable conduit for her prolific output, following up on last year's Always On Time record with this new EP which features a surprise appearance from Working Men's Club on the title track 'Sanctified'. It's a melancholic centre point to an EP which maintains Macri's thematic focus on the spiritual dimension of pleasure.

Owing to his own preference for making music entirely on analog gear, his latest LP Analog Love flaunts this love and then some, laying down nine wet, delectable dancefloor dynamos and enlisting the likes of Rude Jude, Reva DeVito, Ferdi and Holybrune on vocal duties to back it up. Review: Susy Pintus's Fragile is an archetypal slice of Italo-disco that captivates with its ethereal synths and sultry vocals. Released in 1986 and now reissued in 2024, this timeless track exudes an atmosphere of sensuality and nostalgia. 'Fragile' is a mesmerizing ballad that showcases Pintus's vocal prowess and the genre's ability to elicit both exhilaration and melancholy. 'Live For Your Love,' is more for the dancefloor with a captivating synth line that weaves through a tapestry of pop melodies. The remix of Fragile infuses the track with a more dance-oriented groove, while the 'Live For Your Love' remix dials up the energy with driving rhythms and soaring synths. This is a great example of the enduring appeal of Italo-disco. Its infectious melodies, seductive lyrics and dreamy atmosphere continue to resonate with listeners decades later.

Review: Back in 2020, Vick Lavender unveiled his 'Time Traveller Mix' of 'Set Fire To Me', a superb cover of Willie Colon's Latin classic of the same name. It never appeared on wax at the time - it was, sadly for vinyl enthusiasts, digital-only - so this 12" is sure to be in demand. Naturally, it kicks off with that fine re-imagining - a brilliant blend of layered Latin percussion, intergalactic electronics, sunset-ready chords, jammed-out Rhodes motifs and rolling deep house grooves. This time round, he's also added a more stripped-back, drum-heavy version (the 'Beats N Life Vinyl Mix'), while the EP also boasts another previously digital-only treat: Kai Alce's deep house-meets-broken beat tweak of D Millz collaboration 'There It Is'. In a word: essential!

Review: Roggtrax is the latest of many alter-egoic endeavours by Matthieu Roggwiller (aka. Mattrogg) since 2020. His latest 12", 'The Docksides Boy', is a minimal, surfy disco wave-braving - an instrumental dance project homing in on the defined edges of early '80s "Anglo-Saxon disco, blended with sub-Saharan African disco, new wave and art pop of the time. Building off its own coinage - 'electropical' ambience - the sonic palette here is smooth, rhythmical and oded to the guitar, with casual disco hookers like 'Strato' and 'Finger' both in name and in content recalling the image of fingerstyling while overlooking a Mediterranean sundown.

Arriving in 1981, this particular release leans more towards the organic, band-led sound of the 70s with some choice synth flourishes on top, rather than the more driving sound which would catch hold further into the 80s. 'Supercool' is a bubbling, funky-as-hell joint which will loosen up any dancefloor with ease, but 'Percussion Sundance' might well be the popular pick here thanks to its outstanding drums and hazy ambience. Review: Disco Tape is a nascent new V/A series from Italy's Sound Exhibitions, whose stated M.O. is to release alternative dance music and have it reach keen ears. Now with over a decades' worth of experience under their belts, the collective continue to trailblaze with a unique quantity of house trax, seven to be exact, smushed onto LP. Two contributions from current favourite Mosaik, 'You Make Me' and 'Jazz In Sermenin', do well to play up house's endemic crispiness, whether that's heard in a characteristic shaker or clap sound; Kozmik Funk and John De La Noise, meanwhile, deliver ample contrast to this with dusky chordwork and acid jazz explorations respectively, facilitating an ultimately varied, compelling hat-trick for the series.

Review: Emotional Rescue continues its love affair with Glen Ricks here by reissuing his solo debut release. 'Keep On Dancing' is a cult and hugely coveted cut that fuses disco and reggae in some style. Ricks had a first successful musical career in The Fabulous Flames then moved between Canada and Jamaica and eventually got stuck into music in earnest again in the Caribbean. He wrote this one with writer and producer Chris Stanley and it came out first on 7" in 1981, then on 12" a year later. It has a superbly soulful vocal and a groove full of subtle bump that is sure to bring joy to any dancefloor. Idjut Boys' Dan Tyler also adds his own spin under his NAD alias for a more heavy and dub-laden take.

Review: A welcome first addition to a hilarious conceptual label and moniker, National Recording Office Ltd.'s 'NROL 00' is a real treat for new funk and disco edits lovers. Through their hyper-compressed, ultra-phasy, samply disco edit approach, which here manifests in three short movements, this implied duo are on a self-reported "mission from the department of dance". As bridge agents between you and their top-secret cland-op, we need neither confirm nor deny that theirs is a mission accomplished - that's for your ears to decide.

Review: For its next outing, the Nebraska label has curated a mini best-of EP that serves up a quartet of tunes that have been digital only until now. Side A opens with 'Senza Parole,' featuring a weird and wonderful vocal sound and some loose hand claps under Italo-infused disco-funk drums. 'Let Me Be The One' is a nice tripped pout and slow motion 90s downtempo jam and 'Funkbraska' is an homage to French Touch with filtered synth loops fizzing with sugar goodness over a characterful bassline, and last of all is 'Love + Hate', another low slung hose groove that oozes cool and has a fantastic bassline propping it up.

Review: Be Strong Be Free debuts a new series here, Mellow Magic Worldwide, which will offer up a series of DJ weapons that have been produced by "worldwide studio buds." The first one opens with some superb tackle from Gold Suite whose brilliant 'Crush' is a slow-burning 80s jam and emotive rollercoaster that has made a real impact during road testing experiments. On the flipside is the mysterious Mancunian Visions Of Eden who debuts on vinyl with a lush deep house jam 'When It Has Past that has a subtle Balearic charm. Lastly comes Murrin who heads up the Puca Sounds label and co-runs Berlin party Fandango. His 'Maybe Tonight' is a late-night cosmic delight.

Review: One of our rare warehouse finds, now with its dust brushed off and shackles removed; Carlos Benedetti's 'Deep Disco' EP struck us as an impressive four-tracker of nu-disco and abstract dance when it was first released on Disco Disco in 2022, and, unsurprisingly, we still consider this to be true two years on. The Colombia-based artist's production and live talents come equally on display here, kicking off with the twingingly ploddy, vocoded driver 'Love', moving into the rhythm-strumming 'Boogie', and rounding off on two massive, snare-spitting bops, 'High Hopes' and 'Outer Space'.

Review: From P60 is an alias of Zoltan Nagy who this year marks the significant milestone of a quarter of a century in the music game. He celebrates that by launching his new label Midnight Fashion Chill with his own first EP for it. Over the years, Nagy has done it all from deep house to Balearic to lounge and downtempo and here brings that touch of class to six superbly soothing sounds that fuse all that and more. The opener is pure horizontal bliss, 'The Times We Spent Together' is a slow-motion daydream, 'Fallin' (with Jaidene Veda) is pure soul-soothing magic and 'When' is a gently lilting ambient soundscape crafted to perfection.

Review: Berlin based organ band Otto return with a flitty two-tracker in the Italo vein, 'Wir Kommen' and 'Elixier' being the two sonic cases in point. Topping up the label's Maximal Super Sound sub-discog, the tracks are equally as riveting as they are buzzing. The first is vocoder-laden, cold, brittle and icy, yet somehow warms in equal measure through its slightly rhythmically offset leads and pads. 'Elixier', meanwhile, lolls and ironicizes away into a kind of auditory mad-hatter's pleasure garden, getting far weirder with it via carefully delayed popcorn stabs and rainmaker-esque, cascading sounds in the breakdown.

Soul Avengerz - "Musical Freedom" (extended mix)

Review: Fools Paradise offer the next edition of their Paradise Vinyl sampler series: a very special two-tracker shared between peaktime UK house music connoisseur Soul Avengerz (Paul Gardner) and fabulous French producer Sebb Junior. On the A, Avengerz partners with vocalist extraordinaire Adeva to deliver a fresh, raw, re-recorded version of her 1989 vocal house classic with Paul Simpson, 'Musical Freedom'; the new version is a total rerub and makes for an impressive, dance-reviving extended mix. Sebb's 'Colors', meanwhile, revolves around a central 'colours of your love' sample, and dextrously weaves its beats round a central gelatinous, nigh vesicular synth hook, one that froths and jiggles throughout an overall funky, jacking groove.

Review: The Owl & Posse EP brings together several artists on one fresh 12" that explores many Leftfield disco sounds and adjacent grooves. Pete Le Freq opens things up with the vocal-infused disco-funk of 'The Way Down' complete with splashy cymbals and elastic bass. The Owl's 'JBs Funk' is a horn-led jam that draws its samples from James Brown and Fingerman & Chewy Rubs's 'Revolution NY' has some big synth strings and unifying vocal calls over a nice organic rhythm. Monsieur Van Pratt's 'Guaranteed' is a pure good time groove with joy in its bones and soul in the lung-busting diva vocals.

Review: Ben Liebrand aims squarely for the nostalgism that is the dance-centric turn of the 1980s, albeit with a modern twist, on their latest three-track EP version of 'Happy Station' by A Fun Fun. The latter artist's original was first released in 1983, and was noted for its strange windscreen-wiper sound effects and stuttering, gated new-wave beats, making for an indelible fusion of breakdance and Italo disco. Liebrand's version steers the ship in a radically different direction, adding much phatter lows and telephoned-in vocal moves, creating a far further-forward-driven sound.
