Review: As well as navigating the realms of dub and reggae, infusing each track with his signature vintage sound and infectious grooves, Prince Fatty is well known for taking famous songs and flipping them into reggae territory, a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unepxected that usually works wonders on the dancefloor. With the fantastic 'Black Rabbit,' dub don Prince Fatty masterfully tackles Jefferson Airplane's 60s anthem 'White Rabbit', which took its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's surreal story Alice In Wonderland but hooked those references up to the drug experiences of those countercultural rtimes. The A-side is graced by with the vocals of regular Fatty collaborator Shniece, whose performance does more than simply ape Grace Slick's, adding lines and heaps of her own personality, while rich basslines, swirling echoes and soulful melodies all showcase some exceptional production skills. Naturally, there's a dub version on the B-side, and all in all this a testament to Prince Fatty's enduring influence in the contemporary reggae scene.

Review: US label Planets is back with a third outing and this time they have a superb blend of roots and digi-dub with a cover of a Michael Jackson classic. AJ Brown is a noted vocalist who here serves up a rare street soul lovers' version of The King of Pop's 'Human Nature.' It's a passionate and emotive vocal work over a nice rolling beat and on the flipside it comes with an excellent instrumental dub version that allows the synth work to shine more and the funky bassline to come to the fore as the vocals are drenched in echo and reverb. Review: Unearthed from obscurity, this is a late 80s gem that shines anew here and brings together UK street soul and lovers rock into something entirely brilliant. Said to have been discovered in a white label box during a North London crate digging trip, this double-sided killer was originally released as a 12" and come here on 45rpm with big sound system beats and gorgeous melodies next to the soaring and angelic vocals by T-Dynamix & Lisa Ellis. This 1989 treasure originated near Manchester and now Planets press it up in limited numbers so do not sleep.

Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: Jo Wallace's Ramrock label has always proved adept at blending reggae, dub and lovers rock with elements of jazz, soul and Balearic beats. You'll find a similar blend of sounds at the heart of the label's latest 12" - a fine, roots reggae style cover version of Aaron Neville's much-loved rare groove jam 'Hercules' by Asian Dub Foundation singer Ghetto Priest. His version (side A) is effortlessly soulful, with warming horns, clipped guitars and his own sublime vocals rising above a languid reggae riddim. Arguably even better is Darren Morris and Ashley Beedle's flipside remix, which adds bluesy pianos, hazy horns, vibrant Clavinet riffs and Ghetto Priest's vocals to a faithful rendition of the swinging, bumpin' groove that made Neville's 1973 version so addictive.

Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Review: Bim Sherman and Sound Iration came together for this one in 1989 on WAU! Mr. Modo Recordings. Since then it has become a cult classic that will cost a few quid on the second-hand market. But it's not easy to find and so now comes a reissue by Partial. It features two of the three tunes that were on the original with identical artwork. In original form, 'Dream' is a blissed-out bit of sun-kissed electronic reggae. The drums are crisp, Bim's vocals are clean and the organ chords suck you in deep. 'Dream' (version part 3) is a subtle rework that brings out different leads.

Review: US dub crew Park Heights has got a real gem on their hands here with this latest 7". It is a killer jam from the mid-1980s that was made at Aquarius Studio. The 'live digital' tune has never before been released which is a wrong that is rightly corrected here and is even more special as it has Errol Dunkley on the rhythm even though it is not his usual style. It is a heavy stepper with loopy drums and hits that echo off to infinity as he drops his loved-up vocals over the. It of course comes with a superb dub on the flip.

Review: The good folks at Rock A Shaka have long been encouraging us to slow down and sink into a softer way of life, at least that's what we assume from their continually excellent output. This latest downtempo delight is a split 7" featuring Cassandra and Tyrone David. The former's 'Happiness Togetherness' opens up with heart-aching and soul-melting vocals unfolding in graceful fashion over the the lover's rock rhythms below. Tyrone David then offers 'Tell Me Why' which has more great vocals with a more indie twist. The drums remain cuddly and persuasive.

Review: Swiss record label Darker Shade Of Roots have got a crucial new roots offering on their hands here. Ras Ico & The Shades are in charge and showcase their authentic reggae sound which owes a lot to the classic sound of Jamaican. The earthen and dusty vibes of the slow motion drum swaggers and natty chords up top are pure bliss. The vocals bring extra soulful sounds and before long you'll have your heard lost right amongst them. 'The First Day' on the backside is another masterfully meandering riddim with louche drums and heady melodic leads.

Review: The Hornin Sounds label invites you to sink deep into a reggae vibe on this superlative 7" from Vin Gordon. Though freshly mastered, the sis actually built on an old instrumental that was dug out of some archives. It was originally played by Fazal Prendergast alongside The High Times Players at the legendary Channel One studio in 1982. Scientist mixed it at King Tubby studio meaning its credentials are unquestionable. Here it is finished with some deadly and devastating trombone from 'Don D Junior.'

This one with Woodfield Road All Stars is as smooth as they come. 'Love Has Got A Hold Of Me' has slow motion grooves and lazy drums with the most gently persuasive acoustic riffs next to soul drenched and warm vocals. On the flipside is 'Breezin' Up Brentford Road' which has some lovely hammond organ vibes and an evn more laid back swagger to it.

Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Review: Mountone Records wins us over right from the first moment of this, their first release. They feature Jamaican legend Stranger Cole seeing up his buttery vocals with music from The Steadytones on a limited edition rocksteady 7". 'Rude Boy' has superb horns leading the way as the swaggering, ska-infused rhythms carry you away on a hot day and the guitar riffs keep you moving. Flip it over and you'll find the slightly longer 'Koffee'. It's slower and more precise, with a haunting and mystical lead next to more rock-tinged guitar kicks and bolder drum hits. Review: Meditations Music has decided to launch with a couple of hot reggae drops in quick succession. This second one looks to the rootsy dub sounds of The Meditations. It could well be a reissue of a long-lost classic, such is the authentic nature of the sounds and rhythms but no, this is all-new heat featuring Ansel Cridland with Sly Dunbar and Jerry Johnson. Their snaking and hissing leads and meandering bass are the foundations for the freeform vocals. As you would expect, on the reverse side you will find a sick dub that goes heavy on echo and reverb.

He has a buttery smooth voice and often layers it up over dub with digital sounds and sleek synths, such as here. Review: Many of you reading this may recognise this song from Dennis Brown's rendition on his iconic Visions LP, but this version actually predates that one. It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. Review: Sound Of Thunder outta France lands at release number ten here with another gorgeous slice of lovers rock on 45rpm. It features contemporary producers and vocalists Loic Paulin & The SOA offering up A-side single 'Jason White'. At less than three minutes it is the definition of short but sweet but in that time it manages to make its mark with the yearning vocals really hitting home next to nice heat-damaged organ chords and a classic reggae rhythm. On the flip, Mellowmood spins out the sounds via plenty of mixing desk tweaks on his version 'Poor Jason Dub'.

Review: The Sound of Thunder label looks back to a deep roots tune by Freddy McKay here. It is a recut version with the French singer and guitar player Yohann Minkoff aka Major Yo. The rhythm is the fine work of The SOA Band and the whole thing was produced by Sound of Thunder with OnlyRoots. The a-side is cheery vibe with buttery vocals and natty chord work. Chakatack's 'Worldwide Dub' is slower, deeper, more roomy. Both of these are vital dub cuts for plenty of summer deployment on big sound systems.

Review: The Liquidator Music crew have been putting out classic Jamaican rhythms ice the mid-cities and still goes strong. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. They are acclaimed in ska and rock steady circles for good reason and help bring these tunes to life. 'Shine Your Light On Me' is an easy going roller with lo-fi drums and dusty riffs that hook you in while Ellis does his work up top. 'Merry-Go-Round' then cuts loose on a summery and swirling vibe with conversational lead trumpets and natty chords.

Review: The Roots Unity label is in a real purple patch right now and has multiple 7"s dropping in quick succession. The one here is part of a slew of four drops from the Dutch label and it features esteemed roots talent, Bunnington Judah, with the in-house production team. 'Jah Children Must Rise' is organic island music with wooden, tumbling percussion and natty chords. The drums have fleshy bass and plenty of swagger next to the hypnotic flute leads. This fresh new slice of 7" roots comes from Amsterdam where it was written, recorded and mixed with vocalist Rapha Pico. The fleshy, rolling rhythms have been produced by Jah Rej and form a lush bed from which languorous horns and snaking synths all emanate. The longing in the vocal and gentle tinkle on the keys finishes this one nicely. On the flip is a slower, heavier and headier dub.

Here they cover The Eternals' classic Studio One hit, 'Stars' in their own unique and inimitable style. It is laden with rolling drums and fleshy bass. Trilling chords, buttery smooth vocals and tumbling congas all make it an earthy and authentic roots sound that sweeps the heart and gets the head nodding. Flip this one over and on the b-side, you will find a decent instrumental version that is more stripped back.

Review: Stephen Garfield Townsend is the Ghetto Priest (and also works as Levi Judah and Squiddly) and he is a rather prolific talent who has dropped five albums and some 29 EPs. This one came last year and finally arrives on wax. 'Smile' is a deep dub with endless echo and reverb swirling around the lower end as his vocals bring a smoky soul next to the wispy melodies. The flipside 'Nature Boy' is more light and airy, with sun kissed island feels and another unhurried, storytelling vocal that is delivered with grace and control.

Review: Big Youth is self-described as a "contemporary Christian, a man of God, martial artist and system engineer as well as a DJ and producer. Here he lays down some classic and heartwarming reggae sounds with The 18th Parallel serving up the dub. 'Man With A Mission' is a fleshy rhythm with great horns and yearning vocals that are buttery smooth and silky soft. The flip side is a smart studio dub with more room for the fills, echoing his and molten chords to resonate. A timeless and fruity 7" for sure.

Review: The Goodies label makes its bow here with a fully licensed 7" that features the Enos McLeod tune 'Ram Jam Party' backed with 'Rammed'. The former was the opening and title track from the Jamaican reggae singer's 1996 album. It is impassioned lovers' rock with his yearning and vulnerable vocals over clean reggae rhythms, with bright chords and lumpy drums and bass. The flip is a dub version with crispy hits and digital synths paired with the natty guitar riffs and organic piano chords. This is a good start and augurs well for the future of this label.

Review: Impact/Onlyroots are non-stop in December with a whole heap of vital 7"s dropping and covering some fine dub and reggae territory in the process. This is another fine reissue that sets its sights on a classic 1972 roots reggae roller than first came from Impact Records with superb production by Sonia Pottinger. 'Ghetto Stays In The Mind' is a classic with dreamy harmonica leads and a rumbling rhythm section that brims with detail and character. The flip side is a dub that is just as great.

Review: We're not quite sure whether this King Shark single is brand new or was recorded in the early 2000s, but either way 'Escape By Night' is well worth checking. It features the veteran dancehall and roots reggae singer delivering a typically slick and soulful vocal over a rolling digital-reggae rhythm provided by experienced UK producer Russell Bell-Brown (he of the Disciplines fame). Bell-Brown's backing track is ear-pleasing and musically breezy, with a killer bassline and piano stabs being joined by some seriously jazzy electro guitar solos. If anything, the echoing, spacious and weighty flipside 'Version' dub is even better, with Bell-Brown doing a passable impression of Scientist or Mad Professor.

Review: Produced by Henry 'Junjo' Lawes and mixed by Scientist, 'Ice Cream Love' first slipped out it in its native Jamaica way back in 1980. The typically languid, weighty and dub flecked cut is built around a tweaked, replayed version of Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'He Prayed' riddim (a groove that has been used on countless reggae records before and since). Osbourne's lead vocal is typically relaxed and quietly soulful, while the involvement of Scientist on mixing desk duties guarantees more bass-weight and subtle dub inflections than your average roots number. Turn to the flip for a more spaced-out instrumental dub version based around the same riddim recording, with more effects-laden magic from Scientist.
