Ion Man In Dub

Long Iwa Dub (3:48)

Chu Chu Train Dub (3:41)
Chant & Sing Dub (3:33)
Ancient Of Days Dub (3:46)
Review: Realised in parallel with Ras Teo aka Jah Menelik's Ion Man album on Forward Bound, this is a dub version of the exact same tunes. The eight tracks all tap into deep roots and find the artist working with drum and percussive maestro David "Jah David" Goldfine as well as alongside Roberto "Lone Ark" Sanchez who mastered several instruments including the melodica, guitar, drums and organs. Between them they all manage to cook up steamy roots jams that centre the culture with a timeless sound. It's seriously alluring and here without the vocals the whimsical melodies and rolling beats all have even more of an impact.

Review: Ras Teo aka Jah Menelik is back on Forward Bound with a brand new eight track vocal roots offering. It finds him pairing up with bass, kette drum and percussion player David "Jah David" Goldfine and with Roberto "Lone Ark" Sanchez at the helm on everything from key to melodic, guitar to drums and organs and serving up red hot roots jams that centre the culture, too. The sound is timeless and effortlessly alluring with its whimsical melodies and rolling beats all bringing the sunshine into your life under often poignant bars.

She has a happy, feel good and lush singing style that has, since the 70s, become a British reggae signature and it is laid bare here for all to enjoy. Her lyrics are also hugely personal and really invite you in deep to her world with her General Roots band members Ben Mckone and Luke Allwood, and executive producer Youth, all in fine form.

Review: Back in the 1970s, Boris Gardiner was digging deep and tilling his dub fields and often coming up with real treasure. This second volume of Ultra Super Dub on Now Again is a mega rare collection of work from Gardiner, a Jamaican bass player, bandleader, songwriter and singer of great repute. This is the first time this one has been reissued and it comes with great context in an extensive booklet. It is one of the landmark albums of his career so it's great to have it back in print.

Review: Adrian Sherwood serves up a companion album to Horace Andy's acclaimed album Midnight Rocker. Primed for a steppers' soundsystem, as opposed to the the lo-fi acoustics of the original album, this version contains several reworkings and new tracks in contrast to the original, containing both dub and dancehall MCing detours from the likes of Daddy Freddy and Lone Ranger.

Review: Following his Original Mr Cool Ruler album being reissued back in summer by Lantern Rec, Octave Lab now gets in on the action by serving up his I Do Love You album from 1972. It's a delightful work of lovers' rock and roots magic that is centered around his impossibly pure and soulful vocals. They convey all manner of emotions from pain to joy over clean dubs and acoustic guitars. The hooks are catchy and their rhythms percussive, with joyous like 'Don't Stop' and more rueful vibes such as 'You're Eyes Are Dreaming' all sounding as good as ever.

Review: Jamaican born singer Roland Burrell had a pretty vast catalogue by the later stages of his career, most of it recorded at the legendary Channel One Studio with the likes of Sly & Robbie, The Tamlins and Winston Wright. They were engineered by dons like Scientist and he went on to work with Lee 'Scratch' Perry. After he produced 'Lonely Man' he went on to some solo acclaim and recorded the hit 'Johnny Dollar' which topped several global charts. That one along with other beats like 'Hey Mama' and 'Stormy Night' feature here on a fine overview of his work.

Review: Habibi Funk does a great job of introducing or reacquainting the world with niche but rich musical scenes from all across the Arab world. This latest album takes us to the reggae sounds of Libya and specifically the work of Ibrahim Hesnawi, who is known amongst those who know as "The Father of Libyan Reggae." He draws on roots, dub and dancehall with a distinctive Arabic twist that plots a line from Tripoli to Kingston. This artist is so revered for the way he fused the those two musical worlds so effortlessly while colouring it with elements of jazz, soul and disco. An enchanting album that was first recorded more than 40 years ago.

Review: Double vinyl LP reissue of Linton Kwesi Johnson's smash, underground reggae hit from 1978, 'Forces Of Victory', in celebration of Black History Month by parent label UMC. Produced by Dennis Bovell and LKJ, this is a staunchly British dub poetry classic, with every track, from 'Want Fi Goh Rave' through to 'Time Come' charting Johnson's lifelong grapple with meaning, resistance and revolution in his distinctive reality-checking patois.

Review: You can always count on Egon's Now-Again label to bring the finest curios from music's hidden history into the reach of the record buying public. On this occasion they're looking to the work of Jamaican legend Boris Gardiner, a singer, bassist and guitarist with a long and winding history through the beating heart of reggae culture. Ultra Super Dub is the rarest of rare dub treasures, pulled from Gardiner's prolific mid 70s era and originally issued by a Miami-based label in an incredibly short run. On it, you can expect to hear superlative, skeletal versions of classics from Otis Redding, Jimmy 'Bo' Horne and many more. Of course, the sonic treatment is top-notch on this reissue, and there's in-depth writing from Jeff Mao to take you into the world these versions came from. This is how a reissue should be done.

It finds him working with guest musicians such as Ken Boothe, Delroy Washington, Bob Davis, Gene Rondo and more including some former members of the Cimarons. The late great reggae engineer Lee "Scratch" Perry worked on some of these cuts at his legendary Black Arc Studio so they have a real stamp of authority and quality as they explore 12 sublime and classic reggae sounds. A timeless album for reggae heads old and new.

Review: Dubkasm's 2009 debut album Transform I was widely acclaimed at the time and has only grown in stature since. It's long been hard to find and now makes its way back to vinyl. It was originally recorded between England and Brazil and is the record that really cemented Digistep and Stryda's place at the heart of the UK reggae scene. Instruments used include Berimbau, zabumba and cuica with flowing melodies, samba and nyabinghi rhythms and heady Rasta messages from Dub Judah, Tena Stelin, Ras Addis, Afrikan Simba, Christine Miller, Ras B, Jeru Banton, Ras Bernardo and Levi Roots. A real modern dub classic.

Review: Although since 2010 he has been a fully qualified mental health advisor living in the United States, back in the 70s , Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was a key original member of Cultural Roots. He was one of the four vocalists in the harmony group who worked with producer Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label. Wade went it alone in the 80s and lay down some of his own jams with plenty of top musicians at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. Now a bunch of them are getting pressed up to vinyl, including this one, the mighty 'Humble.'

Review: Top Ranking Sound rolls out more featured reggae gold from the vaults here with a new 12" that features tow originals and two versions. Black Survivors open up the account with 'Come Away Jah Jah Children' which is brilliantly unhurried. The horns are lazy and steamy, the vocals seductive, the drums seriously heavy. A dub version allows more focus on the noodling acoustic guitars, then Original Survivors step up with their own version on the flipside under the same title. This one is a little more bright and uplifting with a dub that is just as good closing out the record.

It is a lush and soulful roots sound that is indicative of the wider albums sound overall. It is lyrically inspired by new life, the moon, friends who have recently had babies and lots of love and hope. As such it has a tender feel, with airy and uplifting vocals that warm you right to your core. This album reasserts Hollie as a queen of modern day lovers rock with her lushly harmonic sound.

Review: One of many Studio One-affiliated releases to crop up as of late, Dadawah's 'Peace And Love / Wadadasow' is a rarity few heads can claim to know. A side alias of practising Rastafarian and musician Ras Michael (Michael George Henry), Dadawah ended up his magnum opus despite original intent as a lower-key piece. This one's made up of a weird and wonderful cross-section of styles: wah guitar, plodding bass and the rhythmic chants of his religious music influence of choice, the Nyabhinghi - Rastafarian devotional music combining African drumming and gospel. A classic, reissued whirlwind of laid-back joy.

Someone has been digging in the vaults and tuned out some multitrack tapes for this underrated opus so that they can be pressured. The talented band bring deep roots, mad steppers, dii sounds and on this version some newly extended dubs that really make their mark. 'No sniff, no coke, no heroin, just stick with sinsemilla' is a fine hook to kick off the opening track with and from there things remain essential as many different reggae styles are explored with great social-political commentary up top.

Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. This time out we're cerated to another collection of tunes from Kingston's seminal Studio One, but rather than the straight up reggae we're used to, it is more of a melting pot of funk, soul, jazz and dub. All of these tunes were written in the 1970s under the watchful eye of studio chief and producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and there is a wealth of deep, sunny, funk cuts that have more than stood the test of time.

This Essential Artist Collection makes a strong argument to back up those claims with a mix of several of the ska, rock steady and reggae classics he cooked up over a period of some 60 years. He debuted in 1962 and saw real international success in 1974 with his 'Everything I Own' and the top 10 follow-up, 'Crying Over You', both of which feature here.

Review: Jahlin was not only a talented singer and songwriter but was also someone who made music with a strong message. He got his education in Canada after moving there in 1975 following his younger days in amid and after booming a welder - which seems a popular first career choice for eventual reggae stars as Bob Marley took a similar path - he pursued his musical career. His 'Roots Reality' is as the title suggests a roots reggae song from the Roots Reality label in 1983. It has a positive vibe and the rather rare addition of a violin which is not so often heard in reggae tunes.

Review: Widely lauded as the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Griffiths emerged onto the Jamaican music scene during the late 60s. She quickly made her mark with a series of popular singles during that period, building up to eventual international fame in the early 70s, side by side with her long-term friend and regular collaborator, Bob Andy. It was Andy and Griffith's uplifting reggae remake of Nina Simone's inspiring song, '(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black' (featured on the second LP) that really cemented Griffiths' position on the world stage. With a long list of successful hits following this initial emergence into international fame - the best of which can be found on this incredible new two-part LP - this collection is a beautiful homage to one of Jamaica's all time music legends.

Review: Delroy Wilson's Live As One was originally only put out as part of a white label run on Waricka Records. It had a slightly different tack listing and was produced by Sir Collins. It's an archetypal mid-70s roots record before the rockers sound came into it and finds Delroy himself in powerful form. Some of the gems include come 'Into My World', 'Baby Love' and 'You Keep On Running' amongst others. This version is a great pressing with a new cover and makes up for the fact that an original is mega rare and pricey.

It was produced by Karl Johnson, Bunny Lee, Leslie Kong, Clive Chin, Geoffrey Chung and Harry J and shows off his broad array of styles and how his sound subtly evolved over that decade. From classic reggae to rocksteady and lovers rock, it all features his buttery vocals and plenty of earth production that takes you to a sun-drenched island in an instant. Review: Count Ossie is one of the true forefathers of Jamaican music as we know it, setting a template for the spiritual, drum-focused sound of Nyabinghi as a musical extension of Rastafarian religious practice. From an outsider community in Wareika Hill, Ossie and his fellow players were slowly integrated into Jamaican music culture and went on to record singles for the likes of Coxsone Dodd, but it was with the formation of The Mystic Revelations Of Rastafari and the recording of Grounation in 1973 that Ossie cemented his legacy. Now Soul Jazz are reissuing this landmark album as a triple-12" pressing with a bonus 7" and accompanying magazine - all the better to understand the context and meaning of this incredible work.

Review: Over recent years, there have been countless reissue of reggae-disco rarities and slept-on classics. Soul Jazz has, surprisingly given that they first dipped into the style 20 years ago on the now legendary Reggae Disco Hustle compilation, been surprisingly silent, so it's nice to see them joining the party in fine style. Disco Reggae Rockers is a fitting sequel to its illustrious predecessor, featuring as it does a wealth of killer covers of - and more adventurous 're-versions' inspired by - vintage soul, disco and funk tunes. The plentiful highlights include Devon Russell's inspired take on Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up', Risco Connection's super-sweet version of Diana Ross classic 'It's My House', Valerie Harrison's interpretation of Me'lissa Morgan's 'Fools Paradise' and Hortense Ellis re-frame of Candi Staton hit 'Young Hearts Run Free'.

Review: The story behind this one is that Vivian Yabby You Jackson once put together a tape that had been labeled The Best Of Patrick Andy but had never been put it out. On it was three unreleased tunes, one unreleased dub, and stereo mixes of several previously mono-only singles. For whatever reason it now sees the light of day and we're glad about it - this forms a fine tribute to a top singer and a legendary producer with some timeless dub. The horns pan, the rhythm tracks are heavy, the studio trickery is impressive throughout.

It's on heavyweight vinyl for serious sound system detonation and comes with plenty of catchy hooks and buttery smooth vocals. The guitar riffs are subtle, the bass fat and the rhythms all nice and earthy and original. Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

Review: During last year's lockdown in Italy, contemporary dub producer Paolo Baldini was invited by Pressure Sounds to work on Bunny Lee's archive of recordings he made with singer Barry Brown during the mid-to-late 1970s. The results can now be heard on Praises, a set which adds a little more dub-wise spice to classic roots reggae cuts while retaining much of Lee's production and instrumentation. Brown's vocals - effortlessly soulful, hugely evocative and partially improvised - are simply superb, while Baldini's handling of Lee's riddims and musical arrangements is masterful. As a result, the assembled dubs, versions and vocal reworks sound faithful to the period in which they were recorded while adding subtle new touches and 21st century-ready low-end weight.

Review: For those who remember, focus-grouped supergroup Alcazar made a barrage of infectious europop and trance tracks through the late '90s through to the early noughties, becoming one of Sweden's most internationally successful pop groups. 'Casino' compiled their greatest hits on CD format at the time - including 'Transmetropolis', a Haddaway-sampling slice of robotic fun, and their first single 'Shine On', an equally kitsch new age trip hop ballad showing off the trio's high-end vision of sonic urbanity. Now released on limited, 1000-strong magenta vinyl for the first time, this edition includes secret inscriptions on the run-out groove.

Review: Pressure Sounds latest essential reissue breathes new life into Yabby You and the Prophets' brilliant 1975 album Conquering Lion, an early roots reggae gem that has long been a favourite of knowledgeable reggae heads. The first record naturally showcases the original EP, offering us a chance to savour such classics as 'Run Come Rally', the intoxicating and pitched-down brilliance of 'Conquering Lion' and the shoulder-swinging skank of 'Jah Love'. The second record, meanwhile, gathers together rare dubs, versions and alternate takes not featured on the original LP. It's almost worth buying the reissue for this alone; 'Tubby's Vengeance', 'Anti Christ Rock' and 'Warning (Dub)', in particular, are spectacularly good.

It is a superb collection of vocal roots that first came on the American label Nighthawk Records and might be best known for standout hits like 'In God We Trust' and 'Africa' as well as 'Educate Your Mind.' As well as featuring plenty of live takes on his own much-loved gems like 'One Day' and 'King Without A Crown', he also tackles a few tasteful covers that were penned written by his son Laivy, and which they performed in unison. It's a brilliantly organic and authentic sound with the opening tune 'Fisherman' amongst the best - the falsetto vocals, the lush harmonies, the rolling rhythms - they are irresistible on a warm day. The rest of the record remains just as high on quality, with, of course, the brilliant drums and congas at the heart of each track, but the lyrical work not far behind.

Review: Before stepping out to do solo work, Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was a key original member of Cultural Roots. The vocalist was at the heart of the group's sound and is part of the reason the four-part harmony group had such success in the 1970s. They were produced by Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label before Wade made his own jams in the 80s at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. He did so with the best musical talents of the day and now some of them get reissued with his full blessing and compete with a unique Disco 45 cover graphic.

Review: Following on from the CD version of this reissue, 17 North Prada now follow it up with a welcome vinyl edition. Prince Far I worked with Joe Gibbs's house band The Professionals on Under Heavy Manners, his 1976 full-length recorded at Gibbs's studio in Kingston, Jamaica. His messages throughout his career were always focussed on social and political issues and lend this album its extra lyrical edge on top of the killer rhythms. Gibbs composed all of the tracks bar one from Errol Thompson and it is generally considered one of his finer works. Snap this one up now because it will soon disappear again.

Review: Susan Cadogan is an esteemed reggae vocalist who has been since the 1970s. Now she continues her musical journey with this cover single which is taken from her excellent 2020 album Hurt So Good - Storybook Revisited, distributed by Burning Sounds. Side-A features a rendition of the reggae classic by Dawn Penn, while Side-B offers a sweet soul interpretation of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' track. Enhanced with Japanese-inspired artwork on the jacket, this release showcases Cadogan's timeless talent and versatility as it bridges the gap between reggae and soul music across generations.

Review: The latest collection from the mighty Soul Jazz draws together a myriad of different styles favoured by black British sound systems, not only reflecting the roots of different communities reaching these shores but also the UK twist that that music has received as result. Reggae forms the backbone of the collection, from the blissful consciousness of Pebbles' 'Positive Vibrations' to the more protest-orientated Brown Sugar's 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. But the presence of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins, Ray Keith aka The Terrorist and Digital Mystikz helps show the uniquely British areas into which sound system culture evolved - rave, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep.

Review: Although it is widely regarded as a classic album, Black Uhuru's Brutal has never before been available to buy on vinyl. The 1986 work features the undeniably legendary likes of Sly and Robbie as Black Uhuru's leader, with Junior Reid on vocals, Roots Radics man Tyrone Downie on keys and mixing done by the masterful Jim Fox at Lion and Fox. This version has been newly remastered so packs a perfect raw roots punch with all the heavy low ends landing nice and correct and the vocals cutting through perfectly.
