Junior Murvin - "Bad Weed" (8:16)
Review: 'Open The Gate' is a 1989 box set of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's most enduring productions, involvements and features until that date - most of which were laid down at his legendary yet ramshackle recording studio Black Ark. These were the tunes that cemented Perry's name as an oddball, prodigal, outsider producer; classics including 'Words', plus The Upsetters' versions of their contemporaries The Heptones' tracks Babylon Falling and Mistry Babylon, all appear.

Super Ape (3:50)
Croaking Lizard (3:26)

Underground Root (2:55)
Dub Along (3:10)
Review: The Upsetters are responsible for many a great reggae album and plenty of them revolve around apes, somehow. Return Of The Super Ape might be the most well-known from back in 1978 but Scratch The Super Ape is just as good. This reissue from Music On Vinyl comes on nice audiophile orange-coloured vinyl so sounds superb. All the tunes are heavy with plenty of alluring dubs recorded at the legendary studio of Lee 'Scratch' Perry. From Patience' to 'Croaking Lizard' to Ball Vest' these all lock you in.

Money Dread (3:34)
Mental Slavery (6:38)
Skin Head Skank (3:23)
Losers Weepers, Finders Keepers (6:45)
World War III (extended Play) (7:37)
Review: Mikey Dread was a legend of reggae as a producer, DJ and singer, who gained international fame for working with The Clash on 'Bankrobber' and mixing dub versions for their Black Market Clash and Sandinista! albums. Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. With the Roots Radics as the backing band and the likes of Earl Sixteen and Watty Burnett on backing vocals, the cast of characters is steeped in reggae's golden era, and sure enough the sound is as good as you'd expect. This welcome reissue comes on yellow vinyl - a beam of sunshine as uplifting as the riddims carved into the grooves.

The Upsetters - "Kuchy Skank" (2:56)
Dillinger - "Connection" (4:04)
The Upsetters - "Opperation" (7:19)
Review: This 1978 gem from the legendary dub band The Upsetters gets a top reissue job on limited and numbered heavyweight orange vinyl. That is the perfect medium to experience these heavy dubs - many of which have been crafted by the late great Lee "Scratch" Perry. Originally this one came in small numbers as a Jamaica-only press but was then reissued by Trojan. Next to originals by The Upsetters are feature tracks by Dillinger and Sir Lord Comic. A real doozy, then, with a custom-made new sleeve.

Review: There was a significant outpouring of grief when the death of Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert was announced in September. It was evidence of the ongoing love affair that many in the UK have with the music of Toots & The Maytals, a band who had been serving up ska and reggae records - and performing them live in Britain - since the late 1960s. The good news is that Hibbert lives on through his music, and 1981 album Knock Out - here reissued on vinyl - is one of he and his band's best. Breezy, warm and quietly soulful, the album boasts such as memorable songs as 'Revival Time', the synth-sporting 'Spend The Weekend', the loved-up 'Beautiful Woman' and the jaunty, Clavinet-heavy 'I Know We Can Make It'.

Review: The Roots Radics are a legendary band who played on too many seminal records in the world of reggae to mention. Here their catalogue is presented by Mikey Dread aka Michael Campbell, who was initially an engineer with the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation and went on to make reggae history hosting his Dread At The Controls radio program. A solo career as a performer and producer as well as a top-notch dub master followed, not to mention being sampled by everyone from Dee-lite to Coldcut and endless hip-hop and drum & bass artists. This superb and limited edition album features gems like 'Two Track Dub' and 'Demo Dub' amongst many more.
