Champion (remix)
Cat: BCR 10845. Rel: 12 Mar 21
Champion (feat Black Thought - remix) (3:31)
Ugly Truth (feat Lee Scratch Perry - remix) (2:36)
Review: Hot on the heels of his rather good album Ekundayo - a brilliant set of reggae, dancehall and folk-infused lo-fi soul songs - Nottingham singer-songwriter Liam Bailey returns with two bona-fide legends in tow. The Roots member Black Thought guests on a bold new version of LP track 'Champion', in which he and Bailey's superb vocals ride a fuzzy, organ-rich riddim that sits somewhere between classic reggae and pitched-down dancehall. The Legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry lends his distinctive vocals to the fresh flipside version of 'The Ugly Truth', an intergalactic digi-dub-goes-soul affair that's every bit as awesome as the on-point A-side. Tip!

Dance With Me

Dance With Me (3:49)
Mercy Tree (3:50)
Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Man With A Mission

Big Youth - "Man With A Mission" (3:52)
The 18th Parallel - "Missionary" (dub) (3:45)
Review: Big Youth is self-described as a "contemporary Christian, a man of God, martial artist and system engineer as well as a DJ and producer. Here he lays down some classic and heartwarming reggae sounds with The 18th Parallel serving up the dub. 'Man With A Mission' is a fleshy rhythm with great horns and yearning vocals that are buttery smooth and silky soft. The flip side is a smart studio dub with more room for the fills, echoing his and molten chords to resonate. A timeless and fruity 7" for sure.

Black Survivors - "Come Away Jah Jah Children" (dub) (4:38)
Original Survivors - "Come Away Jah Jah Children" (3:33)
Original Survivors - "Come Away Jah Jah Children" (version) (3:26)
Review: Top Ranking Sound rolls out more featured reggae gold from the vaults here with a new 12" that features tow originals and two versions. Black Survivors open up the account with 'Come Away Jah Jah Children' which is brilliantly unhurried. The horns are lazy and steamy, the vocals seductive, the drums seriously heavy. A dub version allows more focus on the noodling acoustic guitars, then Original Survivors step up with their own version on the flipside under the same title. This one is a little more bright and uplifting with a dub that is just as good closing out the record.

Ghetto Stays In The Mind (5:07)
Ghetto Dub (5:08)
Review: Impact/Onlyroots are non-stop in December with a whole heap of vital 7"s dropping and covering some fine dub and reggae territory in the process. This is another fine reissue that sets its sights on a classic 1972 roots reggae roller than first came from Impact Records with superb production by Sonia Pottinger. 'Ghetto Stays In The Mind' is a classic with dreamy harmonica leads and a rumbling rhythm section that brims with detail and character. The flip side is a dub that is just as great.

It's My House (3:21)
House In Dub (3:16)
Review: Only Roots has head into 2014 in busy fashion with several new7"s all dropping to keep dub lovers in a happy mood. This one tackles the delightful Marie Bowie, who was produced by Barry Biggs for 'It's My House'. It's a soul drenched sound with her vocals adding all the lovestruck vibes you need next to plenty of sunny melodies. On the flip is 'House In Dub' which is a killer dub in its own right but if you prefer this without the vocal, you have us worried.

The Story (mix 1) (2:57)
The Story (extended mix) (6:05)
Review: France and Jamaica collide on this new 12" from Brother Sound, which is now up to release number three and is managing to maintain the good early standard it set for itself. J.A. legend Max Romeo is in top form on vocals with Brother Sound stepping up for the backing and production. 'Roll It Up' is a high-speed and hard-hitting dub that hurries you into shape-shifting while the vocals add extra pressure. It comes as two other mixes then the flipside has the slower and more meandering melodies and unbalanced sounds of 'The Story' which also comes as an extended mix.

I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks (3:22)
I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks (instrumental) (3:22)
Review: Brown Sugar are pioneers of the British reggae scene, particularly within the lover's rock niche. The group's fine discography has been honed in on by the great folk at Soul Jazz who put together a superb compilation I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks back in 2018. It focused on the booth of the Lovers Rock scene in the late 70s and now the title track from it gets pressed up to its own tidy 7". The super deep and luscious original is backed with a fine instrumental to remind us just how pivotal this group really was.

Proud (instrumental) (3:13)
Review: Brown Sugar, formed in 1976 and made up of teenage soul darlings Pauline Catlin, Caron Wheeler and Carol Simms, recorded their breakout lovers' rock single 'Black Pride' in a period when racial tension in the UK was at its most rife. Brought to Denis Bovell's time-honoured Lovers Rock label, it was one of the many reggae releases that defined the eponymous substyle. Now a black 12" repress comes to 1000 lucky first-come buyers.

Dub Plate Mix (4:49)
Review: West London label D-Roy and their sub-label Niagara are in the process of putting out a top series of seven reissues with names like Freddie McKay, Al Campbell, Gregory Isaacs and Junior Reid all making the cut. This one is a gem from Barry Brown that finds him in full-on soul mode as he draws out his languorous vocals over a classic lover's rock rhythm. Swirling horns add extra luxuriousness and on the flip, we get the Dub Plate Mix. This one has drums tumbling over themselves, endless amounts of echo and head-twisting effects for the late-night smokers.

Dennis Brown & Dhaima - "A True" (3:39)

Review: Experience the brilliance of Dennis Brown's late 70s roots vocal cut with this crucial reissue from Joe Gibbs. This new 45rpm features captivating harmonies by the acclaimed USA singer Dhaima, who is a frequent Brown collaborator, and here they combine in superb fashion for a deep roller with buttery vocals. On the flip side, indulge in the mesmerising dub version crafted by The Mighty Two. This is another great reggae release from the tireless folk at the Joe Gibbs imprint.

Jah Children Must Rise

Bunnington Judah - "Jah Children Must Rise" (3:52)
Roots Unity - "Jah Children Dub" (3:51)
Review: The Roots Unity label is in a real purple patch right now and has multiple 7"s dropping in quick succession. The one here is part of a slew of four drops from the Dutch label and it features esteemed roots talent, Bunnington Judah, with the in-house production team. 'Jah Children Must Rise' is organic island music with wooden, tumbling percussion and natty chords. The drums have fleshy bass and plenty of swagger next to the hypnotic flute leads. The vocals from Judah are the impassioned icing on the delicious cake. Flip it over and as always the Roots Unity crew serve up a bottomlessly deep dub version.

Impossible Mission

Jerry Johnson - "Impossible Mission" (3:54)
Brother Sound - "Impossible Dub" (3:57)
Benyah - "Mission Impossible" (3:32)
Macca Dread - "Mission Dub" (3:35)
Review: The Mission Impossible theme is truly iconic but we never thought we'd hear it getting reworked inna reggae style. But that's exactly what we have here from Jackhaya who have enlisted four artists to add their own spin to the tense original. Jerry Johnson kicks off with a superbly laid-back, sax-laced sound full of sexual overtones. Brother Sound's 'Impossible Dub' is a digi-dub with a more muted feel and heavier low end. On the flip is a tropical and steamy rework that sticks more faithfully to the original from Benyah while Macca Dread's 'Mission Dub' is another cavernous one full of echo and reverb.

Fawda Don - "Warrior" (3:24)
Barry Issacs - "So Mi Get It" (3:16)
Review: Winston Ready has played a big part in the evolution of reggae booth as a solo artist and as the mic man for The Cimarons. He has had plenty of hits in his time and is now a regular on this label, Room In The Sky, with a couple of tunes dropping this month alone. 'Cool It Amigo' is first up and is an earthy one with shakers and fat horns over deep bass. The Inn House Crew then appear as usual with a head-twisting dub and on the flip are two more cuts that rework the original, firstly Fawda Don's 'Warrior' then Barry Issacs's 'So Mi Get It.'

Far Beyond The Blue

Leroy Willacy - "Far Beyond The Blue" (2:44)
Big Youth - "Things In Light" (3:01)
Review: Back in 1973 Big Youth started the Negusa Nagast label, translating as the king of kings in Ethiopian. The first single was a split 7" from Leroy Willacy, also known as Cookey Monster, and Big Youth himself. Nearly 50 years on, this treasured record is back in print and it sounds as magical as ever. Willacy's 'Far Beyond The Blue' is a powerful slice of roots reflecting on the mire of slavery which forms a backdrop to so much of reggae's emotional impact. On the flip Youth delivers a deejay cut which rolls slow and easy, the legendary singer freestyling over the lazy groove in his inimitable fashion.

Review: Ken Boothe is a real living legend and is said to be one of the most talented musicians of his germination - which is saying something given the quality that came out of his native Jamaica, and still does. This Essential Artist Collection makes a strong argument to back up those claims with a mix of several of the ska, rock steady and reggae classics he cooked up over a period of some 60 years. He debuted in 1962 and saw real international success in 1974 with his 'Everything I Own' and the top 10 follow-up, 'Crying Over You', both of which feature here.

This second volume of Ultra Super Dub on Now Again is a mega rare collection of work from Gardiner, a Jamaican bass player, bandleader, songwriter and singer of great repute. This is the first time this one has been reissued and it comes with great context in an extensive booklet. It is one of the landmark albums of his career so it's great to have it back in print.

Review: You can always count on Egon's Now-Again label to bring the finest curios from music's hidden history into the reach of the record buying public. On this occasion they're looking to the work of Jamaican legend Boris Gardiner, a singer, bassist and guitarist with a long and winding history through the beating heart of reggae culture. Ultra Super Dub is the rarest of rare dub treasures, pulled from Gardiner's prolific mid 70s era and originally issued by a Miami-based label in an incredibly short run. On it, you can expect to hear superlative, skeletal versions of classics from Otis Redding, Jimmy 'Bo' Horne and many more. Of course, the sonic treatment is top-notch on this reissue, and there's in-depth writing from Jeff Mao to take you into the world these versions came from. This is how a reissue should be done.

Review: At King Tubby's With The Roots Radics sounds a bit like the sort of text message a kid out too late might send her worried mum. It's also the name of this killer album which finds Barry Brown providing some super vocal work to killer rhythms initially laid down by the in house band Roots Radics and then twisted into psyched out stoner soundscapes by the one and only studio wizard The Scientist. He really gets deep here and EQs hard while masterfully dubbing Brown out of the picture.

Review: To Love Somebody is a great album from the rich cannon of reggae. It's the work of Bunny Scott and brings plenty of soul to Caribbean rhythms, and this is a first ever official reissue. Originally recorded in 1975 and produced by, who else, the great Lee 'Scratch' Perry, it rides through plenty of lovestruck laments, more upbeat and rump wiggling gems like 'I Am I Said' and slower, more heartfelt and tender tracks like 'Let Love Touch Us No.' Versatile and vital throughout, this is a richly rewarding reggae record from one of the greats.

They were engineered by dons like Scientist and he went on to work with Lee 'Scratch' Perry. After he produced 'Lonely Man' he went on to some solo acclaim and recorded the hit 'Johnny Dollar' which topped several global charts. That one along with other beats like 'Hey Mama' and 'Stormy Night' feature here on a fine overview of his work.

It finds him working with guest musicians such as Ken Boothe, Delroy Washington, Bob Davis, Gene Rondo and more including some former members of the Cimarons. The late great reggae engineer Lee "Scratch" Perry worked on some of these cuts at his legendary Black Arc Studio so they have a real stamp of authority and quality as they explore 12 sublime and classic reggae sounds. The limited run, heavyweight white vinyl features eight killer dubs made during lockdown at home in Athens.
