Cat: WDR 001. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. The Lion Has Come (feat Brother Culture) (3:15)
  2. Dub Has Come (3:03)
Review: Hondub Hiroaki started producing music in the 2000s as a teenager so is a master of his machines. This new one is a big collision of different sounds and textures. 'The Lion Has Come (feat Brother Culture)' goes first and is al staggering, swaggering drum lines, digital dub and fizzing, pixelated leads that get you banging your chest. It's stark and dark for future lovers, with Brother Culture vocals adding to the fire. The flip offers up the Dub Has Come, a version filled with effects and echo and just as much tension.

Smells Like Teen Spirit (reissue)
Smells Like Teen Spirit (reissue) (7" limited to 200 copies Nachpressung)
Cat: PARK 1033. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit (3:16)
  2. Summer Madness (4:01)
Review: Sometimes known as Inokasira Rangers, Park Rangers are a Japanese band who have spent much of the last decade releasing inspired but unlikely instrumental reggae covers of massive rock, pop and disco hits. This 7" single boasts two of their most popular covers, starting with a ridiculously cheery and almost hilariously cheeky version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Built around a 1960s style rocksteady riddim, it's instantly recognisable thanks to the band's choice to track the tune of Cobain's lead vocal (which naturally isn't present) with a Hammond organ solo. On the flip you'll find a deep reggae-disco cover of Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness'; it's good, but nowhere near as fine as the surprising A-side.

I Saw The Light (mono)
I Saw The Light (mono) (7" + MP3 download code)
Cat: PARK 1023. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. I Saw The Light (3:04)
  2. Track 2 (3:04)
Review: Inokasira Rangers aka Park Rangers laid down this curious festive reggae rhythm in 2019. It was written by American musician and song writer Todd Rundgren who could do everything from pop to soul to metal. Here his tune 'I Saw The Light' gets flipped into a real curio with harmonica leads, rolling drums that are tropical and exotic and a good time vibe that is fun and playful. 'Track 2' sounds like a DIY dub with naive chords and natty melodies that are good for the soul.

Smoking Blue Beat
Cat: KR 016. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. Smoking Blue Beat (2:57)
  2. Rough & Tough Way (2:51)
Review: The Sideburns are an instrumental and traditional ska band from Japan. Since the mid-nineties they have been putting out albums and EPs and this latest is another great slice of rhythm, produced by Top Doca. 'Smoking Blue Beat' has real authentic swagger to it with big horns leading the way and boogie boogie piano chords falling in from above. The Japanese vocals are a mystery, but are filled with character. 'Rough & Tough Way' slows things down and the vocals get more loos end raw out to suggest a late night party mood alert a few sakis.

Strawberry Girl
Cat: TFR 003. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. Strawberry Girl (3:23)
  2. Strawberry Girl (version) (3:18)
Review: This is a sweet bit of Japanese roots and dub from the Youth of Roots. The original version 'Strawberry Girl' is all pained vocal longing, nagging chords and natty reggae rides with plenty of percussive highs, big horns and great production that brims with charm. It's a sunny jam that will warm anyone's heart. ON the flip is a lovely version that dial back to the rugged riddim.

  10. Smile (2:54)
  11. Your Love Won't Shine (4:17)
  12. One Step Ahead (3:39)
Review: Soul Reggae was the 1976 debut album by Beres Hammond - a reggae singer and producer known for his romantic lovers rock who found most fame in the 90s - originally on Water Lilly. It was recorded at Aquarius Sound Studios and mixes up roots, lovers rock and soul with guest sleek Cedric rooks on congas, Art Mclead and Val Douglas on bass and Hammond himself on the vocals. Across the many tracks he reaches some heart swelling highs on tunes like the opener 'You Don't Have To Lie' and then sinks into more sentinel and pained slow jams like 'Oh Take Me Girl
