Hang 'Em High
Hang 'Em High (limited hand-numbered 7")
Cat: JAMWAX 30. Rel: 10 Aug 21
Richard Ace - "Hang 'Em High" (3:07)
Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:18)
Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Richard Ace - "Hang 'Em High" (3:10)
Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:23)
Review: On first spin, this 1968 rocksteady classic by Richard Ace, 'Hang 'Em High', instantly catches the ear. The electrifying combo of low-pedalled piano, bass bubble and monoized Hammond organ, all brought together under a dusty recording palette, wafts off a distinctly spaghetti-Western-dub aura. A Trojan Records favourite in its earliest heyday, it did well to launch the career of Ace, a lesser-cited Jamaican pianist whose talents nevertheless cropped up countless times across the catalogues of many of the nation's most esteemed dub imprints, including Studio One, Tiger and Coxsone. Just as it did on the original Trojan release, the song appears alongside the anthem 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black and George Ferris, also produced by Ace's confidant for 'Hang 'Em High', Harry J.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

On the A side we have the uplifting roots reggae swagger of 'Take Your Time' where Benjamin speaks truth through his positive message, and there's the mandatory dub version on the flip. Lone Ark - "Give Thanks" (dub) (3:29)
Hoarang - "Ethio Roots Theme" (Binghi version) (3:45)
Review: The Montpellier-based crew behind new roots reggae label Samuel have a slightly different take on the sound than some of their contemporaries, with some of the tracks on this fine, compilation style debut EP drawing inspiration from other musical styles. So while Benjamin's vocal opener "Give Thanks" is a deliciously chunky slab of soulful reggae rich in hazy organs and dub style bass, Armel Courree, Pascal Bouvier and Corentin Lehembre's "Ethio Roots Theme" brilliant combines dub-wise reggae rhythms with duelling horn solos more akin to Ethio-jazz. The crew's global influences come the fore on the flip, where Lone Ark dubs out "Give Thanks" - with some subtle nods towards Turkish psych-funk, and Hoarang turns "Ethio Roots Theme" into a Binghi percussion workout with added hazy horns.

Bluetrain - "Binary Riddim" (13:30)
Hydergine - "Mystic Light" (6:11)
Hydergine - "Lunar Eclipse" (7:32)
Review: Lempuyang's third offering is an outstanding split release between Steve O'Sullivan & Hydergine, label bosses for Mosaic/Bluetrain & Ranges. In 'Binary Riddim' Steve delivers a two-part dub track spanning >13 minutes, seriously heavy in the low end; melancholy strings in the first half, progressing to outright menacing chord stabs in the latter. A versatile track offering something for both warm-up and the dancefloor. Complimenting on the flip are 'Mystic Light' and 'Lunar Eclipse' from Hydergine. Deep, dubby atmospherics meander over a weighty 909 kick on B1. Subtle minimalism a la Terrence Dixon, pitched down on B2. Essential release!

The flip brings another true reggae living legend, Horace "Sleepy" Andy Hinds holds the rare distinction of having one of the most recognizable and unusual voices in the history of Jamaican music. Horus All Stars - "Reap What You Sow" (dub) (2:45)
Review: The Horus label's All Stars production outfit serves up some super fresh roots tunes here with plenty of early 70s influences. The a-side original 'Sinner Man' features vocals from former Pioneers singer George Dekker. His carefree style brings a real innocence as he muses on "using the bible as a tool to catch the fool." The rhythms are pure bait with natty guitar riffs just hanging in the air and noodling keys worked in deep. Flip it over for a dub version that is heavy on the knob twiddles and studio effects.

Review:  Recently revisited by RSD on the Broken Beats album, Horace highlight "Cuss Cuss" gets two superb reworks from DJ Madd and TMSV. The former goes for a starker, more traditional dub vibe, allowing the original riff to play a lead role in the arrangement while the rich steppy beats drive the groove forward. TMSV flips for more of a traditional dubstep flavour with a more prominent halfstep and uglier bassline. Both versions are incredible. No cussing please...

Though freshly mastered, the sis actually built on an old instrumental that was dug out of some archives. It was originally played by Fazal Prendergast alongside The High Times Players at the legendary Channel One studio in 1982. The original "Rise & Fall" has incessant kick drum that lean forwards and forces you to skank while contemporary dancehall synths and a distant exotic guitar line add to the pressure. The dub version is an even more straight up banger, and as it's all mixed by Kai Dub and mastered at Pressure Mastering, you can be sure it will sound fatter than fat on a big system.

The Records We Never Made - "On A Whispered Way" (5:26)
Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Review: The third release on the Misadventures label has as solid as the first two. This time out it is Manchester producer Haners who is back at the buttons with the sort of impossibly dreamy and tropical Balearic sounds that brighten up even a drizzly northern afternoon. The supple and sublime 'Denial' kick off with gently titling grooves and wet claps, acoustic guitar riffs and breathy vocals tones. Review: Two dubwise covers, re-issued since Ximeno's first press in 2012. Originally released in 1983, Derrick Harriott's cover of The Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" fuses the best of dub (he was one of the first artists to make sweet music with King Tubby at the mixing controls) and boogie, creating a unique hybrid that works almost too well. Meanwhile on the flip, Susan Cadogan covers the Mtume classic "Juicy Fruit" (also released in 1983), switching the original's R&B flavour for something more sunkissed and sultry. Both will work wonders when the summer comes.

Review: The all new Motive label is serving up its second 7" here and it comes in the form of a brand new tune from the great singer and musician Jerry Harris. He is best known for his famous association with the legendary Wackies label and studio and here appearing with a slightly older, more smoky tone than back in the day, he sure knows how to lay down a top line over a nice rumbling dub rhythm. Some twinkling synths add colour and on the flip the whole thing is pulled apart, slowed down and dubbed out with some mad effects.

Two of the best have been selected for this vital platter with 'Every Dub Is A Star' on the A-side. Lullaby Dub (Sledgehead remix)
Answer (DJ Pinch remix)
Review: Rarely does a set of remixes unite such a disparate set of genres as roots reggae, dubstep, techno and cosmic balearica with such
effortless aplomb as this red hot 10" plate from out of Bristol town. Suitably, it's been burning holes in premier league sound systems
through recent weeks: Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti for instance - as well as providing the climactic moment of Pinch's recent, much
discussed and widely sought after 'dubstep meets techno' mix for the wonderful Mary Anne Hobbes' show on Radio 1. Andy Scholes
of Henry & Louis recorded the original, yearning Tony Tuff vocal to 'Answer' during the mid-nineties at the legendary Channel One,
Kingston Town - one of the holiest of studio spaces in Jamaica. Tuff's pedigree since the early classic African Brothers' sides such
as 'Righteous Kingdom' is beyond question, and here the loops and arcs of his vocal taps into that same spiritual feeling, as he sends
out 'a message to all corners of the earth'. Rob Smith of More Rockers fame stays true to this heritage for his remix, like the long term,
dyed in the wool true roots man he is, underpinning the Prince Far-I echoes of Prince Green's inspirational DJ delivery with considerable
bass pressure. Ras Stryka Dread's mix ascribes a fluid digital reggae low end flow to proceedings which should fairly sing on the more
digitally inclined systems. The flip holds two delicious wild cards - The Cure's 'Lullaby' is yanked out of the doom-laden surroundings of
the classic 'Disintegration' album and injected with some delightful and surprising sunshine vibes, Sledgehead running vocal and dub
remixes which could well become defining sunset records for the summer we're all hoping may well yet arrive. Which leaves a seismic
Pinch remix to completely rush the sound - unpacking the crucial yard credentials atop a skeletal, rigorous stepper - proper uptempo
dancefloor material with a deadliest floor covering bass hum which should only come to true life on the sturdiest, largest systems, it
concludes a totally essential ep in bravura fashion. 'Answer' is out on 2 Kings.

On the A-side you'll find 'Chinese Beauty' by vibraphonist Lennie Hibbert, which first featured on his 1971 album More Creation. It's a wonderfully relaxed affair in which hazy organ stabs and Hibbert's fluid vibraphone solos solos rise above a languid, early evening riddim. Together (7:34)
Review: Manchester's Hidden Spheres becomes the latest artist to showcase his cosmic, percussion-heavy reworks and re-edits on Talking Drums' offshoot Drum Chums. As you'd expect, the sometime Lobster Theremin, Moods & Grooves and Rhythm Section International producer is in fine form from the off, delivering ear-catching, mildly Balearic reworks of genuine obscurities. The highlight for us is 'Stolen', a version of an early South African kwaito number that's big on proto-house bass, densely layered percussion, lo-fi synth melodies and fine lead vocals. Over on the reverse, 'You Better Dance' is a deliciously dreamy, reggae-influenced, mid-tempo Afro-Balearic treat, while 'Together' sounds like a re-wire of an eccentric bit of mid-to-late '80s bubblegum brilliance.

Review: Roots classic originally released on Elevation which was Joe Higgs' own label.
This is the far superior early version than the later version recorded with the Wailers.
'Let Us Do Something' from Pressure Sounds includes instrumental by Higgs Galery.

tinged blow out 'Journey to Freedom' is as rare as they come. Hypnotic.

Crackle Ska (3:10)
Review: The Higher Notes hail from Holland and offer up some superbly stylish and shuffling contemporary ska here on a very limited run of 7"s. It features two tracks taken from their handy, CD only album, Double Salute. Their sound is melifflious - full of swing hints, jazz motifs, and flutes the soar off into spinet-time skies. The drums on 'Earth Shuffle' are warm and cannot fail to sweep you up and get you twirling. On the flip is a more traditional sounding jam, 'Crackle Ska,' but those lovely flutes still lead the way and keep bad vibes at bay for as long as they play.

Front Line (5:27)
Review: Farewell to Midnight by Eric Hilton is the latest of his many collaborative outings with Puma Ptah. The man known as 'the godfather of downtempo electronics' is in fine form here with contemporary roots reggae sounds drenched in soul on the Montserrat House label. The A-side is deep and drips with watery effects and rolling percussion over fat bottom ends as Puma's vocal musing bring the soul. Flip it over and things pick up with 'Front Line' which is a more buying dub groove with turning toms and organic perc next to nice melodic leads.

Justin Hinds & The Dominoes - "The Road Is Rough" (2:45)
Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "Look Away" (instrumental) (3:03)
Review: For those with major gaps in their ska, rocksteady and reggae collections, Treasure Isle's ongoing reissue series of seven-inch singles is a godsend. The Arthur 'Duke' Reid-founded label's latest must-have missive is a strong double-header. On side A you'll find "The Road Is Rough", a hazy and quietly soulful rocksteady gem from the prolific (and hugely successful) vocal group Justin Hinds and the Dominoes. The ear-pleasing musical backing on that number comes from Treasure Isle house band Tommy McCook and the Supersonics, an outfit that gets a chance to shine over on the flipside. Instrumental number "Look Away" is superb, with the band layering bittersweet horn lines and melancholic piano solos over a rock solid rocksteady riddim.

Errol 'Flabba' Holt - "Congo Dread" (2:41)
Errol Holt All Star - "Dread Congo" (3:00)
Review: For their latest release, the Love In Public Spaces crew has turned to a genuinely new talent: London-based Iranian Kasra V, who was previously best-known for his residences at Love Fever and on NTS. His debut EP was apparently crafted using a vintage MPC2000, a "battery of FM keyboards" and "midi-synced drum machines". It's basically a late 80s style hardware set up, so it's no surprise that gentle and seductive A-side opener "Voyage" is awash with chiming lead lines, kaleidoscopic synthesizer sounds and warm, rolling grooves. He opts for a sleazier, more guitar-driven sound on "Last Orders", while inspired flipside "Escapism" is a mid-80s, post-electro synth-scape with subtle Middle Eastern tones, B-movie synth-strings and tons of sweaty drum fills.

Errol 'Flabba' Holt - "My Heart Is In Danger" (2:55)
Errol Holt All Star - "Danger Zone" (3:05)
Review: In 1982, Jamaican singer Errol 'Flabba' Holt joined forces with reggae's greatest rhythm section, Sly & Robbie, to release a track called 'Danger Zone' on their Taxi label. It's now a celebrated and well-known single, but few outside reggae record collecting circles know of Holt's earlier recording of the self-penned song. It was recorded and released on the tiny Different Drum label at some point in the 1970s, and here gets a much-deserved reissue. On the A-side you'll find his original vocal version; titled 'My Heart Is In Danger', it's a slick and soulful roots reggae treat rich in hazy horns, clipped guitars and warming bass. It comes backed by its original flipside, 'Danger Zone': an effects-laden dub that emphasizes the rhythm track's inherent heaviness.

My Happiness (2:50)
My Happiness (version) (2:50)
Review: The uber powerful voice of Jamaican reggae singer songwriter John Holt appeared on countless seminal singles and albums - our favourite being 1974's superbly entitled 10000 Volts of Holt. It was a year earlier that he dropped this single on Clocktower. 'My Happiness' is a steady ska sound with natty acoustic guitar riffs and neat little motifs under a freeform trumpet that rises from the mix. His trademark gravelly vocals are all present and correct, too, of course, with a version on the flip that stops them away and leaves the drums to roll.

Review: Al Wootton and Valentina Magaletti's Holy Tongue project is back for a second offering on Amidah. Once again they explore the outer edges of electronic dub and psychedelic post punk with four fascinating new tunes that have been crafted with the additional input of saxophonist Ben Vince. He adds to the swirling and expansive sound of these tracks, which are built on heavy drums, clacking percussion and detail with plenty of FX. Dark but alluring, there is a deeply spiritual and primeval feel to these most tranced out of tracks.

Review: Al Wootton and Valentina Maghaletti's outstanding post-punk-dub twosome notches up a third record of vital sonics for those who cherish the magic when propulsive rhythms collide in the echo chamber. Like the music on ZamZam Sounds and the work of Al Cisneros, for example, Holy Tongue succeeds so wholly because the balance between dub tradition and experimentation is absolutely achieved. This is without question a true-skool dub excursion, but it has plenty of its own individual character, not least thanks to Maghaletti's incisive percussive thrust. Skip this record at your peril.

Review: Hondub Hiroaki started producing music in the 2000s as a teenager so is a master of his machines. This new one is a big collision of different sounds and textures. 'The Lion Has Come (feat Brother Culture)' goes first and is al staggering, swaggering drum lines, digital dub and fizzing, pixelated leads that get you banging your chest. It's stark and dark for future lovers, with Brother Culture vocals adding to the fire. The flip offers up the Dub Has Come, a version filled with effects and echo and just as much tension.

Review: Pennsylvanian based roots reggae band House Of Assembly dropped their last ever single in 1988 and this is it. The band was formed din Kingston, Jamaican and made up of Norman Bailey, Marc Campbell, Claver Campbell and Louis Putman, all of whom bonded over a love of dub and reggae before moving to the US. They made one album in the 80s became well known on the local scene. This single is one of their most well loved tunes with its stuttering rhythm and crashing hits as well as hints of 80s disco production. The rock-apella and dub version take it in great new directions, too.
