Review: The DDS label, short for Distort Decay Sustain, has given artists like Demdike Stare a platform on which to express themselves through over the years, but it was really Equiknoxx's LP from 2016, Bird Sound Power, which opened their doors to a whole new category of listener. In fact, it was that LP, with all its stunning, dub-wise experimentation, which has led to Mark Ernestus being called up for a pair of remixes. As you probably know, this is a rare case, so this 12" is sort of a special piece - "Congo Get Slap" is given the pure Ernestus rundown, with a charging, minimalistic percussion being swallowed whole by the raucous dub stabs caving in from all angles; the remix of "Flagged Up" is a much slower, more brooding affair in the same vein as the mythical cuts residing on imprints like Basic Channel and Chain Reaction - nothing but deep, meditative dub flexing for the mind. BIG!

Review: Eyes of Others is an Edinburgh-based producer who claims to make "post pub, couldn't get in the club music". Having previously released on chugging psych-disco specialists Nein, "I See You In The Shrubs" marks the producer's first outing on Paradise Palms. On the A-side you'll find his 12" Mix, where half spoken/half sung, Arab Strap style vocals drift across a trippy soundscape built around lo-fi drum machine rhythms, bubbly analogue synth-bass and just the right amount of blazed, out-there electronic noises. The top revision comes from the mighty Andrew Weatherall, who reaches for the heavy dub bass, languid live drums and exotic, cascading electronic melodies. To complete the package, Donald Dust re-imagines "I See You In The Shrubs" as an Italo-disco influenced nu-disco throb-job.
Review: Roots, reggae and dub all permeate this silky suite of cuts from Digital English, which look as far back as they gaze into the future for their inspirations. There are digi-vibes on Lin Strong's "Valley Of Elah" before the clean and crisp riddims of Chazbo's "Over The Mountain" are lit up by harmonic chords from the heavens. An echo-drenched dub version then leads into the bumping "Running Away" which implores you to confront your fears, while Kniox's "Chatty Mount" has a meandering lead synth that drifts in the distance. Arguably best of all though, is Digital English's closing cut "Chatty Dub" - a real killer with crisp hits and endless bass ripples.
Review: If it's dub-wise flavours you're after, Mungo's Hi-Fi has always been a reliable source of dancefloor heat. On their latest album, the Scottish collective has joined forces with sometime Dub Mafia front woman Eva Lazarus, whose sweet singing, spoken word raps and patois-laden toaster chat are put to work over a range of sub-heavy riddims (think dancehall, dub, ragga, roots etc). The result is a set that flits between sweet, sultry head-nodders, surprisingly soulful skankers and more robust and aggressive club workouts. Highlights include a slick cover of Beats International classic "Dub Be Good To Me", the summer breeze of Kiko Bun hook-up "Light As A Feather" and the 21st century dancefloor madness of Max Romeo collaboration "Babylon Raid".
