Love & Happiness (4:57)
Yellow Bird (4:44)
Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Brown Sugar - "Hello Stranger" (3:13)
Elizabeth Archer - "Feel Like Making Love" (2:32)
Review: A boxy dub sound and tight playing is all that is needed across the message of Brown Sugar and Elizabeth Archer's 'Hello Stranger' nicely. The produce of two British reggae singers who were part of the lovers rock scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, this 7" is the eighth release on Ximeno Records, a label that specializes in reissues of rare and obscure singles from various genres, not necessarily limited to reggae. These are actually two covers: the A is of the Barbara Lewis classic, covered with an extra-sweet lovers rock amour; the B is a version of the time-honoured Roberta Flack hit.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (3:33)
Love Will Tear Us Apart (dub Division mix) (3:44)
Review: There is no end of covers of this classic tune originally by the great Joy Division and to be honest most of them are pretty decent, including this one, which is a limited green vinyl version. Scottish production team Capitol 1212 serve up a killer reinterpretation with sublime vocal from Studio One / Dreadzone singer Earl Sixteen. As with many modern pop classics, it's as if the tune were destined for dub; Sixteen's vocals sound paradoxically original, as they're matched by eighth-note pedalizations of the song's melody. The 'Dub Division' mix, meanwhile, is even more smeared in delay, reverb, triggers and sirenny FX wobbles.

Earth & Stone - "False Ruler" (3:47)
Review: Johnny Clarke and Earth & Stone cooked up some real magic with 'Babylon'. It's a sumptuous sound that offers a symbolic representation of societal oppression and injustice. With Johnny Clarke's haunting vocals and Earth & Stone's mesmerising rhythms, the tune becomes a poignant commentary on the struggles of the marginalised and the quest for freedom. Through those lyrics and hypnotic melodies, it confronts issues of systemic inequality and political corruption, urging people to rise against oppression. As such it is anther great tune that proves the enduring relevance of reggae as a voice for the oppressed.

Babylon Boots (version) (4:49)
Review: 'Babylon Boots' was first voiced back in 1986 on Harold McLarty aka Papa Biggs' Vibes imprint but now gets a long-awaited reissue by TRS Records. Earl Sixteen aka Earl Daley is a real reggae force and a living legend who was born in Kingston but is now known around the world having toured for some 50-odd years. This is the first in a series of reissues the label is working on with Biggs and where better to start than this lush and sprawling seven-minute dub with yearning vocals and lazy riddims.

Dub With The Rain (7:54)
Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

Signs Of The Times (3:41)
Signs Of The Times (dub mix 1) (3:40)
Signs Of The Times (dub mix 2) (3:38)
Review: Eastern Roots have built up a small but well formed discography since debuting 2012. It was in 2018 that this particular wax first landed and is now made available again during these red hot days of summer 2020. "Signs Of The Times" is a playful and mysterious jam which is in no hurry to go anywhere, instead looping the same flute lines up top and natty chords over hot-stepping drums. A meandering lead does eventually join the party and only serves to heighten to the trip. On the flip, two different versions strip things back in brain frying and dubbed out ways.

Tell Love Hello (2:39)
Tell Love Hello (instrumental) (3:04)
Review: Here comes a sweet slice of dub reggae courtesy of the late Sid Bucknor's studio and the gorgeous vocal work of The Ebony Sisters. On 'Tell Love Hello If You See Him', they're singing a Gamble & Huff creation originally performed by Mellow Moods and released by The North Bay in 1971. It's a bittersweet but ultimately feel-good tune backed by a pitch-perfect riddim, which Bucknor sends out in an understated style for the dub version on the flip. Some of the finest reggae tunes in history are the heartbreak ones, and so it goes on this golden 7".

Junior Dread - "Rise" (EchoBoy remix) (4:52)
Riddim Tuffa - "Zulu Dub" (EchoBoy remix) (5:06)
Review: It's not often we hear of a new label launching out of the Czech Republic but that's what we get here with Energy Of Dub. It's EchoBoy aka Adam from pioneering digital reggae revivalists Riddim Tuffa who steps up with the goods in the form of two remixes of classic sound system tunes. They are both still deep in the Jamaican style but come with much darker hearts and hefty contemporary low-end frequencies. The A-side is a steppas remix of Junior Dread's 2103 cut 'Rise' from the Peng Sound label then on the flip is a 2016 Zulu Dub tune with a majestic flute lead that brings the vibes.

Earth Needs More Love (7:58)
Diverse Doctoring (7:10)
Review: Way back in the late 1970s, legendary reggae artist Alton Ellis founded the All Tone label, initially as a vehicle for his own work and that of his son, Noel. This 12" is a reissue of one of Ellis' most celebrated All Tone releases, which first surfaced in 1985. While flipside 'Diverse Doctrine' is a rock-solid slab of club-slanted roots reggae, A-side 'Earth Needs More Love' is a much more far-sighted and low-slung affair. Built around a deep, skeletal riddim, spacey synth sounds and Ellis' own impassioned lead vocal (whose conscious lyrics remain hugely potent), the track is a superb, eight-minute dub disco-mix tailor-made for DJs and dancefloors who appreciate the subtle ebb and flow of extended versions.

Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

Genesis To Revelation (6:49)
Seven Days A Week (6:19)
Review: Noel Ellis - son of the great Alton Ellis - released a number of fine records throughout the 1980s. One of the finest, and subsequently one of his more sought-after singles, is 'Genesis to Revelation', which first appeared on 12" via the All Tone label way back in 1984. As this welcome reissue proves, the record has lost none of its allure in the years since it first hit record stores. You'll find the title track - a slightly oddly-swung, bass-heavy number whose surprisingly jazzy electric guitar motifs catch the ear through the seven-minute reggae 'disco-mix' - on side A, with the slower, more dubby and arguably even better 'Seven Days a Week' on side B. It's sweeter and more loved-up than the A-side, with even more low-end weight.

Review: Here's a slice of original ska perfection from The Ethiopians, pulled out of obscurity and presented on a limited 7" reissue thanks to Harlem Shuffle. The Ethiopians were one of the original ska groups in Jamaica, starting out recording for Coxsone Dodd in 1966 and going on to become one of the most successful vocal groups in Jamaica until Stephen Taylor's untimely passing in 1975. 'Train To Glory' and 'Mek You Go On So' are two prime examples of The Ethiopians' eternally enchanting style, pressed up together for the first time on one tidy single housed in a hand-stamped sleeve.

Review: The rather infamous Wackies label was the first to release Tyrone Evans' 1983 long player For Lovers Only. One of the standout tunes on that record was 'Rise Up', recorded at the label's own studio. The Disco Mix here is a cover of a 1982 tune by Max Romeo with a baseline that sounds a lot like The Police. On the flip is a different version of the same tune but picking a favourite here is silly - both are compelling and quirky collisions of dub, disco, reggae and soul with a Latin injection.
