Dennis Brown & Dhaima - "A True" (3:39)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Nu True" (3:37)
Review: Experience the brilliance of Dennis Brown's late 70s roots vocal cut with this crucial reissue from Joe Gibbs. This new 45rpm features captivating harmonies by the acclaimed USA singer Dhaima, who is a frequent Brown collaborator, and here they combine in superb fashion for a deep roller with buttery vocals. On the flip side, indulge in the mesmerising dub version crafted by The Mighty Two. This is another great reggae release from the tireless folk at the Joe Gibbs imprint.

Dub Don't Mind (3:14)
Review: 2Tone icon Rhoda Dakar is back on suitably dusty pink vinyl 7" given that it drops the day after Valentine's Day. This one is another reggae-infused cover following the success of her latest album, 'Version Girl.' 'I Don't Mind' was originally penned by Peter Shelley of Buzzcocks but here gets the Rhoda treatment, and is an homage to one of Rhoda's favourite songwriters. It pays tribute to Shelley's songwriting prowess and reflects on an encounter with Shelley in 2015. Dakar's soulful rendition of it means 'I Don't Mind' resonates as a timeless tribute.

Moving On (version) (4:03)
Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

Review: Lloydie Slim produced arguable all of the best music made by Ronnie Davis. Here comes fine expand of that with a previously unreleased tune on the Records Smith label. 'Never Leave You' comes in two parts with lovely lazy rhythms and dangling, jangling guitars over warm bass. The vocals soar and the horns bring the vibes net to Ronnie's buttery smooth vocal work. On the flip is part 2, a more stripped back version that is a little heavier and fatter.

Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Review: Dark dubstep allstar Dayzero first came to out attention with 'Allca', where they pitted themselves alongside contemporaries Gantz or Coki in their unique displays of wonk and lo-fi production techniques. Things Fall Apart (7:58)
Adieu Chez Cherie (6:53)
Review: Depending on your cultural references you will know that Things Fall Apart is either the title of an album by hip-hop greats The Roots, the debut 1958 novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe or Jon Ronson's latest Radio 4 series on the culture wars. Here it is a deeply mystic techno 10" by Deadbeat. Back in July, he worked with Sa Pa on their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release and what a stunner it was. Here he casts free and deep into an oceanic abyss with drum-less floating currents and drifting melodies on 'Things Fall Apart' then a more hunched and dynamic dub groove on 'Adieu Chez Cherie.'

Cover Me (The Rebel & Shiny D remix) (3:06)
Review: For those in the know, this new collab between veteran Portuguese DJ and producer Dedy Dread and fast-rising Hawaiian singing star Olivia Ruff has been a long time coming. But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. It's accented with wispy chords, neat little guitar riffs and crunchy claps. Flip it over and you'll find a remix by label founder The Rebel and Roman pianist and producer Shiny D. Their version is a modern update with brilliant reggaeton rhythms.

Review: Deepchord serves us the second taster of his upcoming full-length, 'Functional Extraits', out later this year, piling on yet newer layers of texture to his trademark dub techno sound. On this sneak preview EP, 'Glyphs' pulsates through a bed of rattlesnake shakes, swirling ambience, and thunderous knocks, as though it's documenting some bioorganic brain's inner workings. 'Orbitals' entrances us further, inviting us into a melancholic garage rave submerged in a gas giant, while 'Leafiness' barely utters a kick through its emulsive pulses.

Horus All Stars - "Reap What You Sow" (dub) (2:45)
Review: The Horus label's All Stars production outfit serves up some super fresh roots tunes here with plenty of early 70s influences. The a-side original 'Sinner Man' features vocals from former Pioneers singer George Dekker. His carefree style brings a real innocence as he muses on "using the bible as a tool to catch the fool." The rhythms are pure bait with natty guitar riffs just hanging in the air and noodling keys worked in deep. Flip it over for a dub version that is heavy on the knob twiddles and studio effects.

Jah Militia Dub (7:39)
Review: Dubshop.nl is on a roll at this early stage in its life and for the third outing from the Dutch dub lovers we get a nice white 10" with some real heady tackle from The Disciples. Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. It stretches out over eight mesmerising minutes and the flipside 'Jah Militia Dub' slows things down with amore organic feel and rich percussion.

Review: DJ Squarewave and DubApe team up for a phat but stylistically sprawling dubstep EP, 'Ready & Ripe', oscillating between both the heavier and serener ends of the spectrum. A decidedly arid, sub-Saharan palette abounds, whether that be on the opening hype machine that is 'Ready & Ripe' - propelled forward by the energizing emceeing exposition of Roachee - or the bubbling sub-riddim headnod that is 'Drain'. The closing instrumental version of the title track, too, is a notable heater in its own right.

Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Shake Up The Dance" (2:52)
Review: The Original Gravity label is at it once again, combing through hidden pockets to serve up the finest nuggets from bygone days. The label is on a shuffling reggae tip this time around, with their latest single headed up by Lonnoya Drake singing a snappy version of the sentimental soul classic, 'Only You'. It's infectious dancefloor magic with heart to match its heat, setting up nicely for the heads-down get-down of 'Shake Up The Dance' by Woodfield Road All Stars. This sharp-shooting outfit lay down a killer instrumental with a nagging skank and some heavy-vibing organ lines sure to get the dance juiced up good and proper.

Review: Hivern Discs presents a very intriguing and totally unique project from Drames Rurals, a shadowy collective endeavour credited to "meritxell, oriol, ignasi and juns." Presented across three 7"s packed in a handmade sackcloth box, the careful presentation of the sounds matches up to the music, which rolls at low tempos and deals in hypnotic, ritualistic mantras with an earthen, spiritual feel. There's a dubby twist at times, and it feels like a series of happenings from an in-tune gathering rather than an over-composed project, and therein lies the magic. Who knows whether Hivern main man John Talabot is involved, but after last year's low-key Koraal project he might well be without making a big deal about it.

The original version is as juicy as the orange depicted on the cover and finds the label head Drumterror in fine form with with the vocal talents of Ranking serving up some quick, tight bars that vibe nicely with the insistent chord stabs and heavy, rooted drums. The sax styling of Ed Hodge add extra sensuousness. The chords are lazy and loose and a sprinkling of percussion and natty guitar riffs are integral to the rhythm overall. It draws on their vast experience of serving up big hitters on big bass bins and finds them teaming up with Jamaican legend and veteran mic-man Burro Banton, who the sharp-eared will recognised from Chase & Status' massive Return II Jungle album. One of the standouts from it now makes its way on to its own 7". That tune is 'Liar Dub,' the sort of fat and heavy but tulles tune that could be from a mixing desk in 790s Jamaican or made in a hi-tech studio in Japan next week. The sub bass is all comforting, the hi hats leaving snaking tales and twisted vocal sounds add extra hooks. On the flip, 'Track 2' is a nice bit of contemporary Japanese roots.

Review: Jamaican musical heritage in all its glory gets distilled into this super new collaboration between Newham General (son of the late, great soundman Farda Waz) and Bristol's Dubkasm. Dub, reggae and grime all get drawn upon and twisted up with kette drums and rapid-fire vocals to make for something urgent and direct but timeless. Review: US dub crew Park Heights has got a real gem on their hands here with this latest 7". It is a killer jam from the mid-1980s that was made at Aquarius Studio. The 'live digital' tune has never before been released which is a wrong that is rightly corrected here and is even more special as it has Errol Dunkley on the rhythm even though it is not his usual style. First released on Studio One back in the late 1970s and a guaranteed reggae floor-filler ever since, 'Feel Like Jumping' is not only one of Coxsone Dodd's most potent productions, but also one of Marcia Griffiths' greatest moments. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Functional Designs is first full-length LP from the producer in five years, and the teaser 'Strangers' promises more musical development than ever before heard from the enigmatic Detroit producer. It might be best describable as 'progressive dub techno'; airier and more breathable than his early, more subdued works, we're thoroughly impressed by the movement from percussive resonances ('Strangers') to fully ambient finites ('Drassanes').

Review: To mark what would have been Desmond Dekker's 80th birthday, Trojan Records is serving up a variety of celebratory releases. The King of Ska takes us back to the formative years of the Jamaican superstar's career between 1963-67, when he was an aspiring young singer signed to producer Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records imprint. Loosely chronologically arranged, disc one begins with Dekker's celebrated debut single, 'Honour Your Mother & Father', and continues to chart his efforts in the first couple of years of his career - both alongside unnamed studio bands and with the backing of The Cherry Pies and The Four Aces. On CD2, we hear a more confident Dekker belting out the singles that would turn him into an international star, including rude boy anthem - and his first UK top 50 smash - '007'.

Review: Ras Demo relick! One of jungle's longest standing vocalists - whose discography dates back to seminal SOUR dispatches in 1994 - sees his album Frequency getting a reboot on this vinyl edition. Highlights include his rising vocal insistency on the steppy bubbler 'Jungle Buss Me', the powerful toe-to-toe lyrics of 'Protect The Life' with Sizzla Kalonji and the wobbled-out bass and soulful vocals of the final fire that is 'When You Ready'. Complete with a big remix from rave pioneer DJ Phantasy, the frequencies are high on this one!

Review: DJ Vadim's Feel Up Vol 2 was, we're told, inspired by things as different and unusual as Nassau, Covid and Grace Jones. It is an album that he lured himself into when the world shut down during Covid and has resulted in a vibrant record that mixes up dub, hip-hop and reggae. It is said to reflect the "tropical music festival" he created in his mind while in lockdown and brings pop, soul and African influences to the fore. Plenty of guests feature such as Rayjah45 & Javada, Queenie & Syross and Lasai & FABjustfa amongst many more across four sides of superb wax.

Review: Dubkasm's 2009 debut album Transform I was widely acclaimed at the time and has only grown in stature since. It's long been hard to find and now makes its way back to vinyl. It was originally recorded between England and Brazil and is the record that really cemented Digistep and Stryda's place at the heart of the UK reggae scene. Instruments used include Berimbau, zabumba and cuica with flowing melodies, samba and nyabinghi rhythms and heady Rasta messages from Dub Judah, Tena Stelin, Ras Addis, Afrikan Simba, Christine Miller, Ras B, Jeru Banton, Ras Bernardo and Levi Roots. A real modern dub classic.

Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Hovart is a dab hand at making anything he touches sound scarily authentic, and much of Version Excursions, the band's now reissued debut album, sounds like proper Jamaican rocksteady, roots and ska of the 1970s. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed, with highlights including their covers of 'Seven Nation Army', the Rolling Stones' 'Miss You' (reimagined as a toaster-sporting disco-reggae jam), and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'.
