You Don't Love Me (No No No) (feat Delroy Williams)
You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good
Review: Susan Cadogan is an esteemed reggae vocalist who has been since the 1970s. Now she continues her musical journey with this cover single which is taken from her excellent 2020 album Hurt So Good - Storybook Revisited, distributed by Burning Sounds. Side-A features a rendition of the reggae classic by Dawn Penn, while Side-B offers a sweet soul interpretation of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' track. Enhanced with Japanese-inspired artwork on the jacket, this release showcases Cadogan's timeless talent and versatility as it bridges the gap between reggae and soul music across generations.

Chemistry Of Love (3:58)
Chemistry Of Love (version) (3:59)
Review: Susan Cadogan's vocals are perfect for lovers' rock. She can go from real innocence to steamy sexuality in an instant and for that reason was quickly swooped up by Lee "Scratch" Perry back in the reggae heyday. On this one she's in a breezy mood, with soaring vocals and crystal clear delivery riding over a nice fresh rhythm. It is a modern reggae sound with digital production and bright synths over the rumbling drums and bass. The flip side version ups the island vibes with more sunshine, more playful percussion and vibes to spare.

My Baby Just Care For Me (2:46)
Review: During the 1970s, Cornell Campbell made some fantastic records with producer Bunny Lee. 'My Baby Just Care For Me', a favourite amongst the lovers rock-powered 1970s blues party scene in London, is undoubtedly one of their best joint efforts. The riddim is loose and languid, the added piano solos pleasingly expressive and jangling, and Campbell soulful lead vocal tterly beguiling. Chunkier, more dancefloor-friendly roots reggae vibes are the order of the day on flipside cut 'Jah Jah He Morn Ya', where Campbell's vocal improvisation between verses add even more energy to an already heavyweight jam. In a word: essential.

Cassandra - "Happiness Togetherness" (3:39)
Tyrone David - "Tell Me Why" (4:00)
Review: The good folks at Rock A Shaka have long been encouraging us to slow down and sink into a softer way of life, at least that's what we assume from their continually excellent output. This latest downtempo delight is a split 7" featuring Cassandra and Tyrone David. The former's 'Happiness Togetherness' opens up with heart-aching and soul-melting vocals unfolding in graceful fashion over the the lover's rock rhythms below. Tyrone David then offers 'Tell Me Why' which has more great vocals with a more indie twist. The drums remain cuddly and persuasive.

Zemedo (6:50)
Sala (5:29)
Petwo Raboday (4:53)
Review: There is real fire and fury in this opening tune on the new drop from Bongo Joe Records out of Switzerland. A ceremonial chant opens up and is sure to bring dance floor delirium from the off over the high-speed dub rhythms and raw percussive sounds. The raw, high octane and primordial influence of techno looms large throughout with Chouk Bwa & The Angstromers really going for the jugular. Heft modern bass weight, deft electronics and traditional Afro-Caribbean polyrhythms all collide with trance-including and mind-melting results.

Government Man (Alt cut) (3:05)
Political Version (3:26)
Review: There will always be a place for politically charged records, but lines like "The government man bring the working man down to his knees/It's time to take a stand against the government man" seem particularly relevant right now. It's the lead cry on the a-side of this new 7" from eight-piece band Christel & The Goldmaster AllStars who have a bold two piece horn section driving along this fusion of ska, reggae and rock which was first recorded in 1998 and has recently been unearthed. The flipside version has sci-fi studio effects and warped synths layered in for extra trippiness.

Suicide Of Judas (4:11)
Akeldama (4:11)
Review: Al Cisneros has been journeying through the dub undergrowth for over a decade now. He continues on that path with ever more inventive sounds and fresh studio tricks on this new pair tunes for US label Sinai. This tidy blue 7" has sinew bass and brings a raw, relentless rhythm that sinks you in deep. The fine flip side version finds the studio mixing desk becoming an instrument in its own right as it twists, contorts, smears and smudges the original into a heady late night soundtrack.

Johnny Clarke - "Babylon" (dub) (4:06)
Earth & Stone - "False Ruler" (3:47)
Review: Johnny Clarke and Earth & Stone cooked up some real magic with 'Babylon'. It's a sumptuous sound that offers a symbolic representation of societal oppression and injustice. With Johnny Clarke's haunting vocals and Earth & Stone's mesmerising rhythms, the tune becomes a poignant commentary on the struggles of the marginalised and the quest for freedom. Through those lyrics and hypnotic melodies, it confronts issues of systemic inequality and political corruption, urging people to rise against oppression. As such it is anther great tune that proves the enduring relevance of reggae as a voice for the oppressed.

Joe Gibbs Mood (2:54)
Hot Buttered Corn (3:14)
Review: Harlem Shuffle Records' mission is to legitimately reissue killer 60s and 70's tracks and it sticks to that mantra here. This tidy 7" heads all the way back to 1969 for The Cobb's 'Joe Gibbs Mood', which was procured by the eponymous Joe Gibbs, who grew up in Montego Bay then Kingston, and brings all those reggae flavours to this tune. The earthy riffs, organ leads, wobbling drums all get you deep in the riddim. On the flip is 'Hot Buttered Corn', a busier and more upbeat version that has those shimmering organs front and centre in the mix.

Dr 55 (4:34)
Lower Feels (6:55)
Review: The Mysticisms label welcomes Coral D aka Duncan Stump for a debut outing here that marks the first new music to be part of the ongoing and most excellent Dubplate series. This artist has a long history of crafting "deep dub electronic swing" in his roles in Mock & Toof, FX Mchm and his 6000 Degrees project. This one finds him bringing some dub reggae influences as 'Dissolves' is built on a chugging rhythm with smeared chords. 'DR 55' is then a masterfully laidback digi-dub groove that warps space and time and so leaves you utterly hypnotised.

Get Up An' Fight (dub mix) (3:33)
Review: CosTafari is Everald Collins and he has been churning out crucial dub and reggae since the turn of the millennium. He's voiced four albums to date and plenty of EPs on labels like Roots Injection, Ark Music and I Negus Records, as well as working under tens of different aliases. 'Freedom' is a happy dub with jangling drums and perc and his cries for freedom up top. It's well-versed in the classic sound but has a fresh contemporary production twist. It comes as a dub, of course, with the rousing 'Get Up An' Fight' on the flip. This one is more laidback and spare but packs no less of a punch, not least with the charged vocals up top.

Review: Philadelphia's own Fadda Medina and Medina International serve up this mighty fine 10" for all fans of lover's rock. It is Earl Cunningham who kicks things off on 'Frienemy,' a tune that proves his voice is in top shape. Michael Palmer then comes next with the yearning heartache sounds of 'Where Did I Go Wrong,' and Tasha T keeps tugging at the heart strings with Feeling the Pain (Sufferer).' On the flip are further classic gems from Mikey General and JoJo Mac's 'Wahala Problem,' while a heavy and devastating dub shuts things down. Big EP, this.

Cosmic Shuffling - "Merry-Go-Round" (2:53)
Review: The Liquidator Music crew have been putting out classic Jamaican rhythms ice the mid-cities and still goes strong. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. They are acclaimed in ska and rock steady circles for good reason and help bring these tunes to life. 'Shine Your Light On Me' is an easy going roller with lo-fi drums and dusty riffs that hook you in while Ellis does his work up top. 'Merry-Go-Round' then cuts loose on a summery and swirling vibe with conversational lead trumpets and natty chords.

Ruff Cut - "Love & Only Love" (version) (4:19)
Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Major Yo - "Travelling Man" (3:29)
Chakatack - "Worldwide Dub" (3:43)
Review: The Sound of Thunder label looks back to a deep roots tune by Freddy McKay here. It is a recut version with the French singer and guitar player Yohann Minkoff aka Major Yo. The rhythm is the fine work of The SOA Band and the whole thing was produced by Sound of Thunder with OnlyRoots. The a-side is cheery vibe with buttery vocals and natty chord work. Chakatack's 'Worldwide Dub' is slower, deeper, more roomy. Both of these are vital dub cuts for plenty of summer deployment on big sound systems.

Thrill Me (dub version) (3:17)
Review: This week we have a new release on California's Funk Freaks, the label that brought us the likes of Dabeull, Diamond Ortiz and Mofak recently. It comes in the form of this new cover version of Les Femmes 'Yes You Thrill Me' from the Funk Freaks Dub Spliff Funk series. Sensual and neon-lit roots reggae if we have ever such a thing, and those gorgeous vocals atop are the icing on the cake. Rest assured that there is the mandatory dub version on the flip and that's pretty wicked in its own right too. Produced by King Hippo and the aforementioned Diamond Ortiz.

Tony Roots is the man main but also featuring on it are Jahbar I, Clive Hylton from Colour Red association, plus the always eager to impress Fire House Crew with none other than Flabba Holt on bass. Computer Paul - "Version" (3:49)
Review: The Heavy Beat label is almost at the not-so-small milestone of 50 releases. Ahead of that comes a 47th, and this time it is a reissue of a Wayne Wade jam from 1991 that has been reissued a number of times in various formats. The original is a dancehall-tinged sound with those subtle warrior leads and shiny digital synth sounds topped with an old school lover's rock vocal. The flipside version comes from Computer Paul and it slows things down so that sweet bass has more room and space to land and really make a mark.

They followed up in 1982 with This Heart Of Mine which celebrated its 40th-anniversary last year with a limited edition reissue and now the original version gets another one. The album is a much sought-after slice of sweet, heavy lovers' rock and roots for serious reggae diggers. It has plenty of smoldering sounds and timeless lovers' rock grooves that still make as much of an impression now as they ever did.

Review: Al Cisneros is perhaps best known for his part in legendary bands like stoner kings Sleep and doom monoliths OM, but he's also been exploring realms of dub for the past 10 years via his Sinai label and crucial drops on ZamZam Sounds and Drag City. He's now gathered together that decade of work in this immense box set, which gives you heavy, brooding masterpieces like 'Dismas' and 'Teresa Of Avila' all gathered together in one definitive drop of leftfield dub excellence. For fans of Muslimgauze and Scorn as much as King Tubby, this is a vital testament to the experimental potency locked within the tradition of Jamaican version excursions.

Review: One of the most notable voices of his generation, Jonny Clarke's tender tones have soundtracked many a crucial reggae record. His 1982 album Can't Get Enough is a fine statement of his skills and an original copy will cost you a pretty penny. Thankfully it has been remastered for this reissue which has the original tracklist intact. Opener 'Can't Get Enough' sinks you into a reverie immediately while it's like 'Morning Star' are slow motion rollers with buttery vocals over lazy dubs. Elsewhere classics like 'Give Me Love' and 'You Better Try' keep the good vibes going on this essential bit of reggae history.

Review: The world may feel dark and depressing right now, but mercifully there are still artists whose escapist instincts can help lighten the gloom. Hollie Cook, daughter of Sex Pistols' Paul Cook and long a purveyor of soul-fired dub and reggae, is one such artist. Happy Hour, her first album in four years, is a glorious, life-affirming distraction in this summer of discontent - a colourful, groovy, bass-heavy and sugary-sweet riff on lovers rock capable of putting a spring in your step. Our picks of an especially strong bunch include the weary-but-uplifting title track, the jaunty 'Kush Kween' (featuring the distinctive vocals of guest Jah9) and the immersive, sonically kaleidoscopic 'Full Moon Baby'.
