Review: Welcome to the World Of Blundetto, stick around and familiarise yourself with the delightful charms of this third album from Frenchman Maxime Guiget. With a sound spanning reggae, Latin, African, Jazz and more established on the first two Blundetto albums, World Of... finds Guiget expanding this vision for perhaps his finest work to date. Vocals naturally play a big part in World Of... with some of France's foremost Reggae voices like Biga Ranx and PupaJim featuring amongst the 12 tracks, whilst Marina Peloso's contribution to "Last Broken Bones" marks it out as an album highlight. Look out for the cover of Bob Marley's "Work" too which features New York rapper Jahdan Blakamoore and Ubiquity's ubiquitous Shawn Lee.

Review: When it comes to immersive listening experiences built on cutting-edge sound design, few can match the continued brilliance of Echospace duo Rod Modell and Stephen Hitchell. For proof, check the pair's latest offering under the alternative CV313 alias. Built around a suite of three drawn-out soundscapes, Analogue Oceans sees them mimicking the ebb and flow of oceanic tides by smothering gentle dub techno rhythms in lapping waves and soft-focus, spacey electronics. On disc two, Hitchell goes solo to present his own, hour-long interpretation under the Variant guise, heading into the pitch-black depths via watery effects, clandestine aural textures and suitably horizontal ambient dub rhythms.

  3. Transcendental: Segment Three
Review: Surprisingly, Space of Variants' latest limited edition CD release doesn't come from boss man Sergey Barkalov (AKA Mr Cloudy), but rather a previously unheard talent. DAS is Andrew Korotkov, a Russian producer from Lipsetsk city. Musically, he inhabits similar sonic waters to Barkalov, delivering long, slowly shifting soundscapes that draw on ambient, drone and dub techno for inspiration. As debut albums go, Transcendental is quietly impressive. Over the course of three long variations, Korktov delivers a meditative experience rich in effects-laden field recordings, slowly shifting chord progressions, gentle beats and, on occasions, decidedly cosmic aural textures.

Review: Between 2012 and 2017, grad_u released nine EPs of high quality dub techno on the vinyl-only Redscale imprint. With the label now seemingly a thing of the past, the prolific Lithuanian producer has decided to gather together all 19 tracks from those sought-after vinyl EPs on CD for the very first time. Those who have paid close attention to grad_u's career will know what to expect, namely an evocative mixture of deep, hypnotic techno epics, delay-laden dub techno workouts, spacey late night rollers, abstract dancefloor explorations and occasional surprise turns towards a bolder, warehouse-friendly style (see the formidably sweaty and sub-heavy "Holdback").

  5. Amongst The Stars (Variant Etherscape)
Review: With Rod Modell putting the finishing touches to his next Deepchord album (due for release later in the year on Soma), Echospace partner Stephen Hitchell took the opportunity to record a new solo set of his own under the lesser-known Intrusion alias. "Amongst The Stars", a beguiling, 21-minute chunk of soft-focus dub techno smothered in spacey analogue electronics and the distant sound of traffic, is taken from that forthcoming album. Here, Hitchell's fine "Extended Dub" comes accompanied by a trio of varied but typically atmospheric translations from CV313 (AKA Hitchell and Modell), of which the astonishingly deep "Distintegration Dub" is probably our pick. On the second CD, Hitchell dons his ambient alias, Variant, and delivers an absorbing, CD-length "re-shape" that's as entrancing as it is quietly picturesque.

White Dub (CD)

  1. White Dub (Mr Cloudy remix)
  2. White Dub (Michael Mantra remix)
  3. White Dub (Mr Cloudy edit)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, this collaborative album had its roots in a 2013 request from Michael Mantra for dub techno and ambient dub stalwart Mr. Cloudy to remix tracks from his Silent Season-released 2013 LP "Light In My Head". Six years later, and after sending parts and versions back and forth, the pair has conjured this set of lengthy, deep and mind-altering excursions. Mr. Cloudy provides versions of the collaborative "White Dub": an ultra-deep, spaced-out "Remix" that smothers a gentle, slowly shifting ambient dub rhythm in heavily processed snatches of field recordings and atmospheric aural textures around and a sparser, more spaced-out "Edit" that's closer in tone to Mantra's otherworldly, dub-influenced soundscapes. Sandwiched in between you'll find a hypnotic version by Mantra that was partly created using music concrete techniques.

Review: On this fine compilation, Sergey Barkalov has decided to showcase the dub techno side of his Mr Cloudy output. Bar a couple of previously unheard versions, all of the tracks were previously featured on limited edition, hard-to-find 12" singles. Although there are a couple of scratchy, experimental workouts, for the most part the tracks featured on Planets are far more melodious and ear catching than you'd perhaps expect. Barkalov's interpretation of the dub techno blueprint is a little looser than some of his contemporaries, with numerous ear pleasing electronic elements complimenting the heavy basslines and hazy sonic textures. It's these subtle tweaks, not to mention his impeccable production skills, that makes Planets such an enjoyable listen.

Review: If it's dub-wise flavours you're after, Mungo's Hi-Fi has always been a reliable source of dancefloor heat. On their latest album, the Scottish collective has joined forces with sometime Dub Mafia front woman Eva Lazarus, whose sweet singing, spoken word raps and patois-laden toaster chat are put to work over a range of sub-heavy riddims (think dancehall, dub, ragga, roots etc). The result is a set that flits between sweet, sultry head-nodders, surprisingly soulful skankers and more robust and aggressive club workouts. Highlights include a slick cover of Beats International classic "Dub Be Good To Me", the summer breeze of Kiko Bun hook-up "Light As A Feather" and the 21st century dancefloor madness of Max Romeo collaboration "Babylon Raid".

Review: Jah Upton joins Lloyd Barnes and Prince Douglas at the desk for another must-have Bullwackies dub set, originally released in 1977. The music is drawn from tapes recorded at King Tubby's with the Soul Syndicate band, in 1974-75 (before Wackies' move to New York). Certain tracks were also voiced in JA - like Don Carlos' deadly Prepare Jah Man, available here and nowhere else, over a hallmark rhythm re-run on Wayne Jarrett's Bubble Up album. Other highlights include dubs of Wackies' deep Black Harmony rhythm, Joe Morgan's Basement Session, the Love Joys' I Belong To You (a Barry White homage issued on Versatile 7"), a Chosen Brothers and two great John Clarkes (including a version of In Search Of The Human Race which eclipses the Tafari single); also a dedication to the Chinese restaurant next door in White Plains Road.

Review: Back in 2002, Soul Jazz released Hustle, a superb "reggae disco" primer containing killer reggae covers of classic disco hits, mostly recorded and released in the late 1970s. Given that Caribbean disco sounds are now all the range, they've decided to reissue the in-demand collection. Naturally, it contains some stellar material, from Xanadu and Sweet Lady's feminine cover of "Rapper's Delight" and One Bloody's wonderfully positive and laidback cover of William de Vaughan's "Be Thankful For What You've Got", to the dancefloor dynamite that is Risco Connection's brilliant cover of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Throw in Black Harmony's sublime version of Jean Carn's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and you have an essential collection.

Review: For their latest classic reggae reissue, Greensleeves have gathered together two vintage albums in one tasty package. The first half of the CD focuses on Sylford Walker's Lamb's Bread, a dub era roots reggae set recorded at King Tubby's Studio. Tubby's infamous mixing skills come to the fore, with Walker singing over some of the producer's most on-point backing tracks. On the second half of the disc, you'll find Welton Irie's Ghettoman Corner, which features the mic man toasting in thick patois over many of the same riddims as used on Walker's set. It too was recorded at King Tubby's. Interestingly, the great man didn't mix this one, despite its heavy dub vibe.

Review: Pressure Sounds' latest release takes us back to 1976 and "Wall Of Jerusalem", a soulful reggae album by The Prophets that included production from both Yabby You (the band's lynchpin and lead vocalist) and dub mixer King Tubby. The album is something of a roots classic, with Yabby You's seductive, soul-fired vocal numbers being joined by delay-laden heavy dub revisions by King Tubby. You'll find the original set on disc one, with disc two being dedicated to alternate versions, previously unreleased tracks recorded in the same period, and alternate dubs that have lain dormant in Yabby You's archives for the best part of 40 years.

Review: For the latest release on his quietly impressive Greyscale label, Lithuanian producer Grad_U has turned to fast-rising Hungarian artist Zol. The two join forces on collaborative opening cut "Intro", an impeccably spacey and intergalactic voyage into pulsing electronic ambient, before Zol serves up a string of atmospheric dub techno workouts, star-gazing tech-house rubs, bass-heavy minimalist rhythm tracks and clanking, early morning club jams. It makes for enjoyable listening, with the ultra-deep "Fin", hypnotic "Szurke", impressively wonky "Nov1" and intensely blissful "Constellation" - a future dub techno classic in our eyes - standing out.
