Review: Max Guiget under his well-established Blundetto guise is one of France's more soulful producers. He dropped a great soundtrack back in February and now returns with the second volume of his superbly emotive dub work. It is infused with all sorts of knowing references from jazz funk and soul to the best of Italian Library music. 'Count Duke' opens with horizontal sounds, 'Mama Genso' is a playful and flute-led jaunt, 'Capuche' has a darker soul to its mellifluous chords and rolling drums and 'West Highland' is the most spaced out of the lot.

Filled with six dubby manifestos to the beauty and importance of the environment and nature around us, Green Leaves has sublime vocals by the late, great, Guatemala born, Nigeria based Sheila Majekodunmi over an electric dub sound with old school synth sounds and nice rolling rhythms. This marks her only album as she sadly died in her forties. It's a great mastering job by Superfly that makes this an essential one for any time of year, but particularly as the weather starts to warm up.

Review: Steel pan, disco and dub from the 1970s in Steel An' Skin's 'Reggae Is Here Once Again'. Yet another lost gem from EM. Ultra-postive consciousness from Afro-Caribbean London, circa 1979. Members of the legendary 20th Century Steel Band (one of Grand Master Flash's favourites) sailing Trinidad-wise over gratifyingly intricate African ritual rhythms. Strong vocals compliment reggae, funk, disco and soul influences to form a relentless groove machine. Steel 'n' Skin, a unit composed of young nightclub musicians born in Ghana, Nigeria, St. Kitts, Trinidad and the U.K., who once performed with Ginger Johnson's Afrikan Drummers, a highlife band under the tutelage of the late Ginger Johnson and played at Johnson's Iroko Country Club in Hampstead, London. Steel 'n' Skin began performed concerts and workshops in London schools, expanding nationwide to schools, prisons, psychiatric hospitals and summer festivals, including the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival. The group combined a mix of musical forms with community outreach, non-cynical and untainted by preachiness or "social work." Good feelings from good hearts. This EM reissue consists of Steel 'n' Skin's 1979 debut 12 inch single "Reggae Is Here Once Again", featuring "Afro Punk Reggae (Dub)", a fine disco-dub workout, plus 2 tracks from their 1984 LP ACID RAIN as well as one un-issued track. Also included is documentary DVD by Steve Shaw featuring commentary from Steel 'n' Skin's founder Peter Blackman, killer live and rehearsal footage of the band, workshop scenes (check out the 1970s suits and parkas!) and devastating views of inner-city Liverpool. Steel 'n' Skin soars above the 1970s ruins.

Review: Night Owls are an LA-based group made up of members of The Lions and The Aggrolites, pooling their skills into a seriously slick stew which splits the difference between roots reggae and funky soul. Sonically, they achieve a perfect 70s sound with plenty of choppy guitar licks, cool organ and light dubby touches on the desk, but first and foremost comes the songwriting. Review: Frightnrs are considered one of Daptone's best artists but they have put out any new music since 201 after the tragic passing from ALS of the front man, Dan Klein. That wrong is righted here with Always, a new posthumous long player that comes on black wax as well as a coloured version. As fans would expect, it is a raw and soulful offering from the Queens-based reggae outfit that has been built around vocal stems that Klein recorded before his death. It forms a fitting final album from this outfit who also did more than reggae revivalism by adding elements of Motown, doo-wop, Blues and gospel.

Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.

Lyrics muse on the usual subjects of love, loss social turmoil and are well written even though this band is Italian-born, forming in Milan in 2020.

Review: Celebrate The Bullet was the revered second album by The Selecter back in February 1981. It came on the heels of the massive debut Too Much Pressure and a serious run of singles including the likes of 'Missing Words' and 'On My Radio.' Here though things slowed down a little with lyrical commentaries still coming thick and fast on everything from racial to social issues. At the time, the recent murder of John Lennon and an assassination attempt on U.S. President Ronald Regan meant the album got little to no mainstream support because of the title. For this special reissue, the original production tapes were dug out and remastered by Alchemy Mastering at AIR.

Review: VP serve up a special vinyl reissue of this legendary The Upsetters album from 1978. It has been specially remastered for the occasion and the whole thing was of course produced by the late great Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It was the last record he did in his legendary Black Ark studio before he closed it down (and later burnt it down thinking it was possessed by evil spirts). It is another superb highlight of his skill on the studio mixing desk, with taped out dubs, hissing hi hats and meandering melodies that burrow deep into your brain and body.

Review: Nigerian disco-boogie act Galaxy's sole, self-titled album has become a holy grail for Afro-boogie collectors over the last few years, so it's no surprise to see Italian crate diggers Mondo Groove giving it the reissue treatment. Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Review: If you assumed it was possible to live without a ska version of the James Bond theme tune then prepare to be taught one of life's great lessons. Assumption is the mother of all f**k ups, basically. Fear not, though, what was a one-off pressing by Soul Jazz for Record Store Day in 2020 is once again available, only this time on gatefold LP rather than five 7" singles. Perhaps not as authentic or ideal for DJs, nevertheless the contents are just as captivating. Celebrating, in part at least, the bond between Bond and the Caribbean - author Ian Fleming lived on Jamaica and several stories are set in the region, and filmed on said island (Dr No, Live & Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, No Time To Die) this is evocative stuff. Stick it on, kick back with a Martini, and picture yourself casing out a mark at some beachside party spot, stunning partner in hand, senses subtly on high alert.

Review: Delroy Wilson's Live As One was originally only put out as part of a white label run on Waricka Records. It had a slightly different tack listing and was produced by Sir Collins. It's an archetypal mid-70s roots record before the rockers sound came into it and finds Delroy himself in powerful form. Some of the gems include come 'Into My World', 'Baby Love' and 'You Keep On Running' amongst others. This version is a great pressing with a new cover and makes up for the fact that an original is mega rare and pricey.

Review: Pitura Freska's Na Bruta Banda album is 30 years old in 2021 so it gets a limited edition pressing on hand-numbered, super limited vinyl to mark the occasion. It's a wild record that collides ska, world, folk, dub, reggae and prog rock, as unlikely as that may sound, into a full flavour album packed with heat. This most unlikely of Italian collectives was from Venice, formed by "Sir" Oliver Skardy and released 10 albums between 1978 and 2002. All the lyrics are delivered in a Venetian dialect of Italian making it surely one for he only reggae records in the world to be in that language.

Review: Africa Unite (named after one of his 1979 tracks) is an album that finds Bob Marley's greatest tunes all reworked in a contemporary Afrobeat style by fine modern African musicians. It's a great project that Marley himself would surely have approved of and would have no doubt been involved with had he still been around. Often times the vocals are left quite similar to the originals, but reworked into languid electronic rhythms with nice noodling synths and plenty of brass and horns. Standouts for us include 'Redemption Song' (feat Ami Faku) and 'Three Little Birds' (feat Teni & Oxlade).

Review: With their high tempo combination of ska, metal, punk, funk, reggae and soul, many elements of Fishbone can be compared to other bands, but the group themselves have always sounded quite inimitable. A Los Angeles troupe held very close to many hearts, Fishbone, a five track EP, defines all that hyperbole. It's energetic, engaging, fun, but unarguably accomplished lyrically and musically. Featuring 'All We Have Is Now', their first single featuring longstanding member Chris Dowd since 1994 (he was with the band from formation in 1979 then went on hiatus), here's more than enough proof they're still as irresistible as ever.

Review: The Soul At Large Sessions is something of a legendary reggae record originally from 1969. It has been remastered for this reissue and pressed up to nice eco vinyl with updated artwork. Because of copyright restrictions, this version has a new name that differs from the original House In Session but the tunes are all the same and pack just as much of a heavyweight sound. Thing superbly sun-kissed island rhythms with plenty of percussive prickliness and expressive keys. The deeper vibes of 'African Zulu (Sounds Only)' and romantic rhythms of 'Everybody Needs Love' are special indeed.

Review: Harlem Shuffle knows what's up when it comes to reggae and few labels did it better than the legendary Trojan Records. The ongoing Hot Sauce series hits a fourth volume here with another red hot mix of gems from Trojan's vast vaults and plenty of classics sit next to a few lesser-known delights. Standouts come thick and fast but include a levied up vibe from The Rulers & The Carib Beats on 'Let My People Go (As The JJ All Stars)', a keys lead wobbler from The Hippy Boys on 'Wondering' and Dennis Alcapone who is in fine form delivery his patois over fat drums on 'Shades Of Hudson.'

Review: Hugh Maddo's Pop Style is one of those super rare but cult late 80s reggae and dancehall albums that just hit a perfect sweet spot between styles. Thankfully, Death Is Not The End sub-label 333 has got the rights to this full reissue of the original which was recorded in Jamaica at Byron Lee's Dynamics and Herman Chin-Loy's Aquarius studios in 1987. A wealth of musical talents of the day all feature on it including Winston Wright, Bobby Ellis, and Mikey "Boo" Richards, but the standout is the sublime vocal contribution of Killamanjaro's Hugh Maddo.
