Review: Prince Fatty's new independent record label Lovedub Limited kicks off with a super 7" from the man himself. It is in fact something of an homage to the 1970s jazz-funk of Lonnie Liston Smith but with some hefty dub and reggae treatment. Shniece Mcmenamin stars on vocals and brings plenty of summer soul to the groove which is also lit up with free-flying flute lines over steady reggae rhythms that will sink you in deep to Winston "Horseman" Williams and Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilvie's drums, organ and piano. On the flip is the dub with the iconic Liston-Smith melody leading you through a lazy afternoon in style.

Review: It isn't too often that you can get two rare and desirable releases on one CD but that's just what we have here. Dr.Bird gives us these rare 70s examples of lesser known releases that have a strong cult following but are still being discovered. Delroy Wilson's Sarge from 1977 and Ken Boothe's Unlimited from 1977. Both releases are lauded for each singers soulful voice and music diversity with early ska and rocksteady infused into their reggae sounds. Both releases are hard to get original copies for a reasonable price so having them together is an added treat.

Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

Both bands are synonymous with several classics and have left an indelible mark on music history. Review: The Dig This Way label outta Italy continues to build a fine head of steam with its stomping second disco release. 'Spell Bound' comes from PSK, and is taken from their one and only album Disco Season back in 1980. It was the opening track on that album, written by Austine Rigar and Jones Coakly, and is a bright, joyful groove. The big vocals bring exotic international flavours over the funky bass work, trilling drums and afro-tinged rhythms. ON the flip is another tune from that album, 'Revolution (Work Hard In Your Life)' that is all pixelated synth leads, afro-drum patterns and even a hint of ska swagger.

Review: The Aggrolites formed in 2002 and brought together two different Los Angeles reggae and ska bands in the Vessels and The Rhythm Doctors. They started as a backing outfit for Derrick Morgan but soon went on to do their own thing, uncoiling this debut album from 2003. Review: With sunshine becoming a regular occurrence again just in time for summer, two of France's more soulful producers have decided to join forces and offer up something suitably warm and relaxing. With the assistance of vocalist Kahina Ouali, Blundetto and Booker Gee have recorded a killer, Hammond-laden version of Lyn Christopher classic "Take Me With You" that sits somewhere between the organs-and-lo-fi-drum machines flex of Timmy Thomas' "We Can't We Live Together" and the soulful reggae grooves of 1980s lovers rock. Review: Jamaican reggae harmony group The Silvertones were formed in 1964. The band was founded by Gilmore Grand and Keith Coley with the addition of Delroy Denton completing the lineup. It wasn't until 1973 that they recorded their debut album, Silver Bullets, with production taken care of by the late great Lee Scratch Perry. It was actually the first ever album tone produced in Perry's iconic Black Arc Studio and came on Trojan Records with single like 'I'll Take You Home' and 'Rejoice Jah Jah Children.' It is packed with laid back island sounds and beautiful vocals and has been pressed here on nice heavy vinyl for a warm and fulsome feel.

Review: Robert "Dubwise" Browne is a skilled musician who can lay down perfect basslines, lovely keyboard overdubs and excite drum programming. H does all that and more on this super laidback and heartfelt dub for the Japanese label Vortex. 'Tracks of Love' is the sound of a lazy afternoon walk in the park with a new love, without a care in the world and hearts in your eyes. The Balearic guitar solo that rings out midway through is utterly soul melting. The guitar dub makes even more of that aspect of the original.

Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Review: Flower Records fusion masters Masato Komatsu and Ryo Kawahara are Slowly and are adept at everything from dub to disco, soul to post-rock. They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' Review: The Far East is calling once more with this latest Japanese take on reggae and ska from the good people at Urban Discos. It is a high tempo and raucous offering from Scafull King with two different versions of the same tune on both sides. 'Lyin' Ass Bitch' (Kaela Kimura version) is first and brings bustling drums and imposing ska rhythms with layers of organ and fiery vocals making for a big and in-your-face sound. The second version is even more rock-edged with hammering drums and walls of fuzzy guitar.

Review: Six albums in and Madness had firmly established themselves as part of the British pop firmament when they released Mad Not Mad in 1985. It's a divisive album which captures Suggs' Camden Town likely lads in a period of transition as the 80s wore on and musical styles shifted. Moving on from the chirpy ska of their early days they moved into a more polished pop sound which landed them a billing on NME's 'Greatest Albums Of All Time' just weeks after its release. Their 'Jackpot Of Hits' compilation was originally released three years into the label's existence in 1969, whereby the the compilation was named after one of the label's most hard-hitting 7"s by The Pioneers, 'Jackpot'. Review: A shining example of soundtrack reggae, 'Sally's Song' was first incarnated in an unlikely spectacle: Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas. Originally composed by the film's scorer Danny Elfman, reggae reinterpreters Aanant Pradhan and Larry McDonald (of Skatalites fame) here lay down a dour dub cover version. Wistful, moody and clean. Review: Japan has an always eye opening and left of centre take on most of the world's most established genres. Urban Discos save sup plenty of it and this time it is a Far Eastern take on lover's rock that is in the sights. Here we have two cuts from Qimygo who also records as KIMIGO. Up first it is 'Aitai To Omoeba' with its shiny dancehall beats and glistening, innocent melodies all topped off with the pure and clean vocals of Qimygo. After that upbeat opener comes the swagger and ever so slightly more tradition dub of 'Abatina (Calypso Rose)' but still served up through a bright melodic lends.

Review: Dennis Brown serve dup a real roots classic when he penned 'Milk and Honey.' It is a dub that still does damage and so has had a nice fresh reamster for 2022. It's an enduring anthem with plenty of praise for Jah. The prodigal comes with Clive Hunt's original 'Bitter Sweet' dub which he made under his Azul moniker. It's full of echoing synths and head melting pads as well as cavernous bass depths. On the B side, Jay Glass Dubs tackles the original with a warped sense of space and time as he deconstructs contemporary dub into something all new. This is a limited-edition white label vinyl 12" so snap it up fast.

Review: This Japanese import on Vortex Records offers a brilliant disco-reggae version of a classic tune by Dean Fraser & Robert "Dubwise" Browne. 'Mister Magic' is a mid-paced chugger with oodles of reverb and bass so funky it will tie you in knots. The acoustic guitar melodies are warm and slide up and down the scale and big horns add flesh and fun. On the flip it is dubbed out to the max, with endless hissing hi-hat tails and mind-melting bass but the same sense of playful and bubbling funk. A real scorcher for sure.

This collection includes their biggest hit, "Everything Crash", which criticised the political situation in Jamaica at the time, which included power cuts and rationing and plenty of clashes with the authorities. Review: Brooklyn-based five-piece band SunDub drops a long-awaited second album here in the form of 'Spirits Eat Music'., It finds the talented ensemble combining classic reggae sounds with smart elements of soul and blues. The lead single of the same name includes the Grammy-winning percussionist Chris Berry on jembe, as well as sax from Greg LaPine and Easy Star All-Stars Buford O'Sullivan on trombone. It's a timeless sound that has authentic rhythms and heart-aching vocals with great production prowess. It was all recorded at Lydgate Sound in Kauai in May 2021.

Review: The Liquidators is a streetpunk band from Santa Cruz. Back in the nineties they roamed around the local scene and recorded some tunes that are well worth hearing. This 7" on Pirates Press features two compositions that sit right up there with the best you can expect from this genre. 'Long Time Again' is a lo-fi ska and reggae fusion that swaggers back and forth with 60s guitar riffs and a dusty sense of soul. It's beautiful. 'Soul Steppin' is a much more upbeat and dance floor focussed tune with punchy street soul and another great set of male and female vocals. This particular 45rpm comes with its own comic book to enjoy while you get lost in the music.

Review: Although he first entered a recording studio in the late 1960s, it wasn't until 1973, and the release of the Alvin 'G.G' Ranglin-produced single 'Love Is Overdue' that Gregory Isaacs career started to take off. The success of that record persuaded Ranglin to record an entire album with Isaacs, In Person, which became the now legendary reggae singer's debut full-length. This expanded edition of the album presents the album on disc one, alongside alternative dub versions and other singles Isaacs recorded with Ranglin during the period. Disc two, meanwhile, offers a celebration of Ranglin's other works of 1973 and '74 - Jamaican hit singles (and their corresponding dubs) which are largely lesser-known outside the Caribbean.

Review: The Original Gravity label's Reggae Dynamite series sure is packed full of dance floor heat. This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Melbourne Douglas completes the picture with 'Wheel & Come Again', another raw as you like and classic sound.

Review: Two previously unheard righteous anthems from the sweet-voiced Icho Candy. The A side, 'Get Up Natty' was cut at Channel One in the mid-eighties, with backing by the Gifted Roots Band, and features an instantly recognisable bed of squelchy FX, elastic synth leads and choppy upstrokes, while the flip is an emotive new cut featuring legends from the Firehouse and Channel One production camps on the riddim. It's great to hear Icho still in fine style, delivering a timeless anthem with a positive message. Both sides also include excellent dubwise versions. Review: The legendary Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, the owner of world-renowned Studio One Records from Jamaica, is said to have himself "produced", mentored and schooled Alpheus, real name Neil Martin. After recording his debut album Quality Time at Studio One in 1997-98, Alpheus' discography has since amassed far too many singles and a total of seven superb ska, rocksteady and early reggae albums, over a 26-year career. 'Kitty Kitty' is an uptempo ska track produced by Roberto Sanchez, authentically constructed traditional style and made with precision, channelling a delightful retro 'doo-wop' feeling all around, accompanied with an excellent Instrumental on the flip side, with Viti Sanchez helming up a rather superb sax solo.

Review: The Heavy Beat label is almost at the not-so-small milestone of 50 releases. Ahead of that comes a 47th, and this time it is a reissue of a Wayne Wade jam from 1991 that has been reissued a number of times in various formats. The original is a dancehall-tinged sound with those subtle warrior leads and shiny digital synth sounds topped with an old school lover's rock vocal. The flipside version comes from Computer Paul and it slows things down so that sweet bass has more room and space to land and really make a mark.

Review: Legendary reggae vocalist John Holt was such a powerful and potent role on the mic that his 1000 Volts Of Holt album title is a perfect summation of what he brought. It is no wonder then that the Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter can be heard on tons of classic tunes and records across the seventies. For the fascinating Peacemaker, he worked with plenty of talented musicians (Sly and Robbie and Lindel Lewis were amongst them) and recorded across Jamaica and the UK. Review: Anthony Johnson spent lots of time in London despite being from Jamaica and it was during his time in the English capital that he recorded this album, Togetherness, which to this day endures as one of the dynamic dancehall man's best works. It came in 1993 and took in and spat out many of that era's big sounds - pop, ballads and of course dancehall. His singing is superb throughout as you would expect of someone who worked with all the greats, from Lineal Thompson to Lee "Scratch" Perry. Something of a lost gem, this album is now available again courtesy of Radiation Roots.
