Dub Fever
Review: Disco-infused reggae and soulful grooves are on the agenda as Prince Fatty takes to the controls with regular vocal colllaborators Shniece and Horseman along for the ride too. For the Disco Deception album, he raids the reinvents various classics in the image of his own signature low-end energy and impeccable production, giving us original and dub mixes to choose from in several cases. His version of Krfatwerk's 'The Model', which features both Shniece and Horseman, was an underground smash when it emerged a couple of years back and sounds as vital as ever. 'Fever', made famous by Peggy Lee as far as 1958, gets some soul-stirring vocals from Shniece, and Tom Browne's 'Funkin' For Jamaica (NY)' is a glory of funky basslines to shimmering horns. A magnetic atmosphere that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish, all with character to spare.

Review: The more erudite record digger will know that Japan has long since had a thriving ska, dub and reggae scene. This new entry in the Nippon series from London's Time Capsule label proves that - Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985 dives deep into its early days when J-reggae artists were looking to the likes of UB40 and The Police for inspiration rather than the Jamaican originators. And you can hear that here in this fine collection of backbeat gems which are playful, loose and catchy, with subtle hints of city-pop and new-wave sounds. These tracks have only been available in Japan before and are now sure to find a welcome new audience on European shores.

Review: The Emotional Rescue label has done a superb job of shining a light on the British post punk scene over the last decade or so. It now does so once more in fantastic fashion with a compilation of tunes from Bristol's short lived but much loved Recreational Records. The 10 tunes have been remastered and recut and they all sound as good now as ever. Highlights include X-Certs - 'Untogether' and Electric Guitar's 'Don't Wake The Baby' which sum up the collection perfect with their jangling dub rhythms, heavily treated vocals and oodles of delay all twisting your melon. This releases was included in Bandcamp's Essential Releases 2022.

Review: Rhino recently acquired the worldwide rights to The Beat's catalogue, and is marking the beginning of this exciting partnership with the release of an expanded version of the influential ska group's 1980 debut, I Just Can't Stop It. A fixture of ska and two-tone in their day, The Beat laid down an infectious toe-tapper with I Just Can't Stop It, imbuing the natural compulsion to dance with the hidden materiality of class struggle; with deeply socially charged lyrics skirting over the jubilant instrumental likes of 'Best Friend', 'Mirror In The Bathroom' and 'Twist And Crawl', to contrasting but convincing effect. This acclaimed fixture of British ska comes reissued as a 2-LP set on magenta vinyl, following up the RSD crystal clear edition released earlier in 2023.

Review: Hugh Maddo's Pop Style is one of those super rare but cult late 80s reggae and dancehall albums that just hit a perfect sweet spot between styles. Thankfully, Death Is Not The End sub-label 333 has got the rights to this full reissue of the original which was recorded in Jamaica at Byron Lee's Dynamics and Herman Chin-Loy's Aquarius studios in 1987. A wealth of musical talents of the day all feature on it including Winston Wright, Bobby Ellis, and Mikey "Boo" Richards, but the standout is the sublime vocal contribution of Killamanjaro's Hugh Maddo.

C H A R M - "Midnight" (version) (4:11)
Review: Federal and Dubstore Japan reissue highly sought after gem, Willie Lindo's cover of Love Unlimited Orchestra's 'Midnight And You'. 'Midnight' is a louche, smooth-as-sin nocturne punctuated by hammond wobbles, whispered nothings and surely one of the most in-the-pocket basslines in reggae history and the legendary Lloyd Charmers gives it a sparse, small hours dubbing on the B-side, removing all fat and showcasing the unparalleled rhythm section. Absolutely essential stuff.

Review: Samory I, one of Jamaica's most promising reggae artists to watch, releases his eagerly-awaited solo debut album Strength. The LP follows Black Gold, his 2017 collaborative album with the iconic producer Rory 'Stonelove' Gilligan. Named after Samory I's affectionate moniker for his son, Strength is an 11-track storied opus produced by esteemed Jamaican producer Winta James, whose credits include hits with Protoje, Chronixx and Damian Marley. Samory I said the LP represents "the struggles I've overcome, both mentally and physically." Growing up in Kencot, a rougher neighborhood in Kingston, Jamaica, he faced many adversities and found reggae music as a form of salvation. He used his voice as both an instrument and vehicle for social change in his community. The album is a true reflection of its title, proving that courage and love prevails above all.

Review: Originally put out in 1981, Merlyn Brooks' 'You'll Never Need Somebody' got a superb lovers' rock cover from Janice Walker that oozes with romance and groove. It always soon sells out and now gets reissued again by Miss You with several different versions. The original 1981 mix opens up with its lush harmonies and gentle grooves and then comes a 45 mix and original, with Androo stepping up for three dub versions on the flip. One is synth-heavy, one is all about the percussion and one he bills an Essential mix.

Review: Regarded as "one of reggae's quietest superstars", Jackie Mittoo aka. "The Keyboard King" carved a remarkable path in reggae music. A protege of Sly Stone, he began his career as part of Studio One's in-house recording band, and later went on to work with artists such as Bob Marley, UB40, Barry White, Peter Tosh and Oscar Peterson. This album was the result of a rare occasion of being on tour in Africa and establishing musical connections with musicians from Ghana; it was recorded in Accra and mixed in London. Predominantly instrumental, In Africa is essential to any dub-conscientious record collection, as it culminates the career of a reggae legend under new influences in West Africa, resulting in an unmistakably characteristic modern dub sound. Reissued on vinyl with remixes previously only availably on CD format.

Review: The iconic Late Night Tales series scored a real doozy when they managed to lock in Don Letts for for his instalment. The British film director, DJ and musician is a vital part of the UK's musical fabric from his days making videos for The Clash and Elvis Costello to his work with the Big Audio Dynamite band he co-founded. All that history is distilled into this sublime selection of sounds across four vital sounds fo wax. There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

The ongoing Hot Sauce series hits a fourth volume here with another red hot mix of gems from Trojan's vast vaults and plenty of classics sit next to a few lesser-known delights. Standouts come thick and fast but include a levied up vibe from The Rulers & The Carib Beats on 'Let My People Go (As The JJ All Stars)', a keys lead wobbler from The Hippy Boys on 'Wondering' and Dennis Alcapone who is in fine form delivery his patois over fat drums on 'Shades Of Hudson.'

This unique album combines Jay Z's famous Black Album acapellas with classic Studio One reggae riddims from the very heart of 1970s Kingston. Review: Toots and the Maytals were sent back to Dynamic Sound Studios in Kingston for new recordings that eventually gave rise to the album after their Funky Kingston success. It features a number of covers of material aimed quite specifically at the English market such as John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Though first recorded in 1974, it still packs a punch and of course delivers plenty of the Jamaican band's melodic reggae with beautiful vocal harmonies. The whole thing oozes soul and is underpinned by a certain sense of spirituality that makes it all the more alluring and enduring.

It's a sister collection to the Perfect Motion album that focuses on new wave and leftfield pop and is already a cult classic. This lovely album also makes ten years of this fine label and is a tasteful assembled selection perfectly befitting of that occasion from this much-loved imprint. Here's to the next ten years.

Review: On its 20th anniversary comes a reissue of No Doubt's 1992-2003 singles collection, which brings together the very best of the ska and pop rockers' contributions to music at large over their first decade of stardom. Known as the alt-rock group fronted by Gwen Stefani, No Doubt were a formative act for the spreading of a distinctly American, pop-oriented form of ska punk. With Gwen's brother Eric on keys, and with bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young also in tow, No Doubt's career was a slow-burning exponential curve skywards, which saw a successful takeoff despite some early flops. A huge team backed their recordings; notable on this compilation is two production features by Sly & Robbie, 'Underneath It All' and 'Hey Baby'.

Review: Victor Axelrod is key to the Daptone Records sound that you most likely know and love even if you arent familiar with his name. He is a producer, arranger, recording and mixing engineer, and keyboardist who has had a vast influence across the imprint's releases of the last 20 years. Amazingly, though, If You Ask Me To is the first ever album he has put out under his own name and it features a collection of his singles released between 2007-2023 next to a load of unreleased gems from Sugar Minott and Binky Griptite. They all show his range and unwavering quality and musicianship.

Review: It's been 40 years since The Specials changed the ska game with their self titled debut, so what better time to remaster and re-cut it at half speed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Spread out over 2 x 12" vinyl it was originally produced by Elvis Costello and was a loud and proud blend of big and energetic tracks, no-messing lyrics and hard hitting grooves. It includes a few covers along the way, such as their fabulous take on Dandy Livingstone's "A Message to You, Rudy" and red-hot version of the Maytals' "Monkey Man". A strong anti-racism message on "Doesn't Make It Alright" sits next to the tongue in cheek takedown of local pubs on "Nite Club" and much more.

Review: Jackie Mittoo is a true legend of Jamaican music, with credits to too many records to count from his days as the go-to keys man in the fabled surrounds of Studio One. From the breakthrough years of The Skatalites to thousands of recordings for the likes of Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, The Wailers, Marcia Griffiths and countless more, his service to reggae is without question. His solo works are a treasure in themselves, which Soul Jazz knew only too well when they put together this dazzling compilation back in 2000. It's been due a repress for some time - a double pack of pure keys-led bliss from a reggae icon given the shine he so thoroughly deserves.

Review: As the undisputed 'Keyboard King of Studio One' Jackie Mittoo left a huge mark on Jamaican music across the eras, helping found The Skatalites and leading The Soul Brothers amongst many other bands. Soul Jazz gathered together some rare recordings of Mittoo and the Soul Brothers from the mid-60s, where the ensemble glide with poise between ska and rocksteady, sprinkling in funk, jazz and Latin touches for good measure. It's a heady crew which captures Jamaican music in a period of open-ended innovation, as practised by some of the key architects of the sounds. After being out of print for some time, this special green vinyl edition isn't likely to hang around for long.

Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Hovart is a dab hand at making anything he touches sound scarily authentic, and much of Version Excursions, the band's now reissued debut album, sounds like proper Jamaican rocksteady, roots and ska of the 1970s. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed, with highlights including their covers of 'Seven Nation Army', the Rolling Stones' 'Miss You' (reimagined as a toaster-sporting disco-reggae jam), and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'.

This new collection from Jamrock legend Clive Hunt pulls together old versions and new renditions alike, featuring legends like Barry Biggs taking on 'Here Comes The Sun' and The Pioneers' stunning take on 'You Won't See Me'. Rub-A-Dub Soul also welcomes in new generations of talent as Yannis Odua sings 'Revolution' and Danakil takes on 'Hey Jude'. It's no mean feat to pull off covering such globally adored songs, but these singers and players step up to the challenge without missing a beat.

Boasting an array of special collaborations, including Jack Johnson, Bob Weir, Eric Clapton, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Ziggy Marley, Buju Banton and Slightly Stoopid. Review: The Skatalites' incendiary ska bombshell, Ska-Boo-Da-Da, first surfaced after the Chinese-Jamaican record producer Philip Stanford 'Justin' Yap first clocked onto the genre's earliest burblings. After hearing word of his rival Clement Dodd's receipt of hundreds of ska demo in mid-1964, Yap saw dollar signs at such a critical juncture, and unhesitatingly pulled his pre-rigged strings to gather of the cream of his session talents (not yet quite collectively crowned the Skatalites) for a mammoth all-night session in 1964 at Dodd's Studio One on Brentford Road. Successfully occupying the studio of his competitor, the culture cow that was to become the Skatalites thus further came into being. The November session lasted 18 hours, and was described as a monster - so riveting, in fact, that it compelled the studio to double the usual going rate for the instrumentalists. Though many of its demo takes still languish in the vaults, the Skatalites' second-ever LP amounts to a well-chosen curation of cover versions (Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington originals included) first laid down on that fateful, deal-sealing day.

Now she continues her musical journey with this cover single which is taken from her excellent 2020 album Hurt So Good - Storybook Revisited, distributed by Burning Sounds. Side-A features a rendition of the reggae classic by Dawn Penn, while Side-B offers a sweet soul interpretation of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' track. Enhanced with Japanese-inspired artwork on the jacket, this release showcases Cadogan's timeless talent and versatility as it bridges the gap between reggae and soul music across generations.

Because of copyright restrictions, this version has a new name that differs from the original House In Session but the tunes are all the same and pack just as much of a heavyweight sound. Thing superbly sun-kissed island rhythms with plenty of percussive prickliness and expressive keys. The deeper vibes of 'African Zulu (Sounds Only)' and romantic rhythms of 'Everybody Needs Love' are special indeed.
