Double Talk
Double Talk (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 102. Rel: 14 Dec 20
  1. Double Talk (4:30)
  2. Double Dub (4:21)
  3. Double Talk (DJ Duckcomb Discomix) (7:28)
Review: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the archives of the Dancefloor label, and also extend their appreciation for the golden age of lovers rock. This time their attention is on Red Cloud, a UK reggae act who were active through the 80s. 'Double Talk' was a hit when it was released, but its limited pressing means it's been prohibitively expensive for far too long, so this reissue should be very well received indeed. As well as the smooth as silk original version, there's a cool and deadly 'Double Dub' version to sink your ears into as well. Stretching things out in his inimitable style, DJ Duckcomb gets busy on the B-side with nearly eight minutes' worth of 'Discomix' to keep that quintessential lovers groove rolling for as long as possible.

Redmo Reworks
Cat: FTR 001. Rel: 05 Sep 14
  1. Bob Marley - "Is This Love" (Redmo acoustic takedown)
  2. Redmo - "Sadi Soul"
Review: Sam Redmore has quietly been doing his thing in hometown Birmingham for some time, crafting soul-soaked re-edits, bootleg remixes and mash-ups that tend towards the tasteful end of the spectrum. Having previously built up a solid fan base via his own Bandcamp page, he's finally made it onto wax. The two cuts featured here are amongst his best. The A-side revision of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" is particularly potent. It strips out the drums, thus emphasizing the genuine sweetness of Marley's original. Flip for "Sadi Soul", an upbeat, headnodding rework of a vibraphone and double bass-laced jazz-funk jam with added hip-hop swing.

Don't Look Back In Anger
Cat: OGR 800. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Don't Look Back In Anger (4:47)
  2. Love Is A Treasure (5:40)
Review: 2020 has been a hugely productive year for Neil Anderson, the vintage reggae, ska and soul loving producer behind the Original Gravity label. Here he rounds off the year via a new single from The Regulators, one of the label's most reliable revivalist reggae combos. The headline attraction here is undoubtedly the skanking cover of Oasis's Britpop smash 'Don't Look Back in Anger', which we're sure will annoy Noel Gallagher no end. Built around a rocksteady groove replete with trademark organ sounds and lazy trumpet and trombone solos, it's a cheeky but brilliantly executed cover. Over on the flip they deliver a more faithful cover of Freddie McKay's 1967 rocksteady standard 'Love is a Treasure'. It's good, but sadly lacks the A-side's "wow" factor.

Fooling Around
  1. The Rio Grandes - "Fooling Around" (2:56)
  2. The Duke Reid Group - "Oh Misery" (2:22)
Review: As reggae aficionados will tell you, Dutchess was one of Treasure Isle founder Arthur 'Duke' Reid's smaller labels. These days, the reborn print is being used to reissue sought-after rarities and previously unheard tracks from Reid's vast Treasure Isle vaults. These two tracks come under the former category and were previously only available as part of Trojan's Treasure Isle Ska Rarities box set. The A-side boasts The Rio Grandes' boisterous and harmonic 'Foolin' Around' - a defiantly fuzzy, early '60s Reid production that for some reason never came out at the time - while on the flip you'll find 'Oh Misery' by the producer's early all-star backing band, the Duke Reid Group; this, too, is a vital piece of previously buried ska gold.

Groovy Situation
  1. Groovy Situation (3:33)
  2. Groovy Dub (3:34)
Review: Seventies dub talent Keith Rowe had a small but perfectly formed discography under this alias and it includes the 1977 gem "Groovy Situation". Like most tracks of the era it had Lee 'Scratch' Perry production so the riddim is crucial. Super smooth, super sunny, super stoned, it's an archetypal stoner dub that will never age. The dub packs less of a cerebral message without Rowe's caramel vocals but delivers just as much goodness through those sweet riffs and gentle percussive flutters. Snap this one up for authentic dub bliss.

Miracle Of Love (warehouse find)
  1. Devon Russell - "Miracle Of Love" (3:55)
  2. High Times Players - "Miracle Of Love" (version) (4:18)
Review: Even in this internet age where you can find out pretty much anything about anyone, Devon Barrant Russell's story remains much of a mystery. Bits of info are known about his life and recording career, but there are also huge gaps. What we do know is that he worked with High Times Players in 1984 on a full length, but then never again according to discogs. Despite that, this tune isn't on that album, so who knows where and when it was recorded. It's a warehouse find from a recent stock take and fuses a sentimental soul sound with blissful 80s reggae, R&B and roots vibes. It's a lovely little tune, too.

  11. Brave Enough To Live (2:52)
Review: Red Soul Community is a ska band from Spain founded by Carlos Dingo, and after a small hiatus they make a big return with a punk riddled new album that comes with suitably confrontational artwork. Known and loved by rocksteady fans round the world, this outfit is led by the captivating vocals of Isa Garcia and since 2005 they've turned out a number of acclaimed albums. This new one is an uptempo affair with energetic grooves, hints of American ska, skinhead and 2 tone, and attitude to spare. The songs are both catchy and dance-y, and the whole album is wonderfully colourful.

  9. Madrid (2:52)
  10. Time To Go (2:40)
Review: Since moving to Sao Paolo from New York nearly two decades ago, in-demand producer and dub mixer Victor Price hasn't released much solo material. In fact, "Drink" is his first solo album since 2002 and has been trailed as a natural successor to that album, "Smoke". This is because it expands on the "samba Ska" blueprint he established on that much-loved set. In practice that means tracks that craftily combine elements of both Brazilian music and Jamaican ska, dub and reggae, with a few jazz and blues influences thrown in. As a result, "Drink" makes for hugely enjoyable, sun-soaked listening, with the Afro-Cuban/Ska fusion of "Bebida", relaxed "Simao", skanking "Because I Can" and pleasingly dubbed-out "Time To Go" standing out.

  10. Open The Iron Gate (part 2) (2:12)
Review: The Lee "Scratch" Perry produced Revelation Time is often said to be a definitive record from the Jamaican canon and is widely regarded as the best album Max Romeo ever wrote. Initially it was only put out in Jamaica in 1975 then two years later in 1977 under the name Warning! Warning! A year after that, the rest of the world was treated with a release, again under a new name, this time Open The Iron Gate. Now it is served up under its original name with all 10 tracks hitting hard and making their mark.
