You Don't Love Me (No No No)
Cat: JS7S 384. Rel: 28 Mar 24
You Don't Love Me (No No No) (feat Delroy Williams) (3:38)
You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good (5:01)
Review: Susan Cadogan is an esteemed reggae vocalist who has been since the 1970s. Now she continues her musical journey with this cover single which is taken from her excellent 2020 album Hurt So Good - Storybook Revisited, distributed by Burning Sounds. Side-A features a rendition of the reggae classic by Dawn Penn, while Side-B offers a sweet soul interpretation of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' track. Enhanced with Japanese-inspired artwork on the jacket, this release showcases Cadogan's timeless talent and versatility as it bridges the gap between reggae and soul music across generations.

We All Need Love (3:44)
We All Need Love (extended) (5:26)
Review: If you like sensuous and slow motion grooves with hints of dub, reggae and disco all packaged up in super bawdy soul then look no further - this new 12" features a pair of singles that were first put out on 7" by Risco Connection's Otis Gayle. Up first is the glorious 'Sexy Eyes' which was a worldwide charting success and Dr Hook now brings new reggae vibes to his cover version, then on the flip is Domenic Troiano's 'We All Need Love', again with a mix of dubby disco and reggae stylings that have been draw out into extended format to make for a more lasting impact on the dancefloor.

Love Has Found Its Way (4:38)
Love Has Found Its Way (dub vocal) (4:38)
Review: Dennis Brown's 'Love Has Found Its Way' is the subject of this super cover version on Vortex out of Japan. It is Maya Hatch and Robert Dubwise Brownie who are behind it and they bring lush lovers rock vibes and rolling reggae to their unique interpretation. Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.

C H A R M - "Midnight" (version) (4:11)
Review: Federal and Dubstore Japan reissue highly sought after gem, Willie Lindo's cover of Love Unlimited Orchestra's 'Midnight And You'. 'Midnight' is a louche, smooth-as-sin nocturne punctuated by hammond wobbles, whispered nothings and surely one of the most in-the-pocket basslines in reggae history and the legendary Lloyd Charmers gives it a sparse, small hours dubbing on the B-side, removing all fat and showcasing the unparalleled rhythm section. Absolutely essential stuff.

Review: Quite when Record Store Day starts and ends amidst all the vinyl delays we're all suffering from is anyone's guess these days. But this is a record set for that celebration of all things waxy and it is a limited 10" with tracks by Edi Fitzroy and DATC Dubcrew which were all produced by Mikey Dread. It comes on hand numbered copies on solid red, solid green and solid gold coloured vinyl. 'The Gun' kicks off with withering synth work and fat rolling rhythms before 'Invasion' sinks into a much slower, deeper dub. Flipside versions offer more rib rattling bass and pillowy drum

Moving Out

Moving Out (7:58)
True Love (6:46)
Review: Johnny Powell's 'Moving Out' is a killer reggae classic, charting the 80s dubstar's staunch decision to move "way out, way out, way out" of Babylon, after much abuse by the figurative city of vice. Against a wicked riddim by an unknown production crew, we've got laboured horns, ghostly vocals and snake-rattles, all of which make this a certain addition to the ranks of the politically charged reggae and ska of the time. This reissue is backed with another track by Powell, 'Love Is The Answer', which balances out the 12" with a 'positive vibe' of true love.

Review: Jimmy Riley, Sly & Robbie, and The Taxi Gang join forces on Sexual Healing: Jet Set Japan to deliver some superb reggae-infused renditions of soul icon Marvin Gaye's timeless classics. With Riley's smooth vocals, Sly & Robbie's legendary rhythm section and The Taxi Gang's stellar musicianship, each track is a vibrant fusion of different musical worlds. From the infectious grooves of 'Sexual Healing' to the laid-back vibes of 'Let's Get It On', these tunes have a magical air and irresistible charm that serve as a masterful tribute to Marvin Gaye's legacy, reimagined with the distinctive flair of Jamaican reggae.

Statehouse (5:36)
Review: New York City ska and reggae institution The Slackers have been doing their do for some 30 odd years now. Their latest release 'Kill You', though, shows no signs of staleness with plenty of fresh and futuristic perspectives. Recorded during the sessions for Don't Let the Sunlight Fool Ya, the A-side here is an epic at over seven minutes, while the B-side features a dub mix of 'Statehouse' from the band's Sunlight long player. It is a tune with a long and winding backstory that first saw it as an updated version of 'Wrongful Suspicion' which the band's frontman Vic Ruggiero co-wrote for Rancid back in the 90s.

Review: The 4th Street Orchestra is one of several aliases used by Matumbi, which was actually one of Britain's first and most original reggae bands back in 1971 when they were founded initially. For the best showcase of their sound look no further than this landmark roots record Ah Who Seh? Go Deh! which came in 1976 and has been hard to find since. This is a first ever official reissue of it and finds Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell tapping into his vast knowledge of sound system culture and laying down heavy rhythms with plenty of Jah-worshipping, Zion-referencing lyrics and soulful yearnings. It's complex and cultured and packs a true bass heavy punch.

Review: New school reggae and organic rocksteady sounds from The Appetizers never sounded so good as on this fresh long player. It's on heavyweight vinyl for serious sound system detonation and comes with plenty of catchy hooks and buttery smooth vocals. The guitar riffs are subtle, the bass fat and the rhythms all nice and earthy and original. Lyrics muse on the usual subjects of love, loss social turmoil and are well written even though this band is Italian-born, forming in Milan in 2020.

Review: Bad Manners will always be known for their standout tune but they recorded a great wealth of other superb sounds from the mid-seventies onwards. Back in 2013, Buster Bloodvessel's ska and 2-tone band had some of their best unreleased material pulled together for this album, Rare & Fatty. It arrived back then on picture disc but is impossible to find so this reissue on nice red wax is welcome indeed. It's a wild ride through tongue in cheek 2-tone, traditional dub sounds and characterful ska that reminds us that this outfit is one of the best-loved in recent British music history.

Review: Rhino recently acquired the worldwide rights to The Beat's catalogue, and is marking the beginning of this exciting partnership with the release of an expanded version of the influential ska group's 1980 debut, I Just Can't Stop It. A fixture of ska and two-tone in their day, The Beat laid down an infectious toe-tapper with I Just Can't Stop It, imbuing the natural compulsion to dance with the hidden materiality of class struggle; with deeply socially charged lyrics skirting over the jubilant instrumental likes of 'Best Friend', 'Mirror In The Bathroom' and 'Twist And Crawl', to contrasting but convincing effect. This acclaimed fixture of British ska comes reissued as a 2-LP set on magenta vinyl, following up the RSD crystal clear edition released earlier in 2023.

He dropped a great soundtrack back in February and now returns with the second volume of his superbly emotive dub work. It is infused with all sorts of knowing references from jazz funk and soul to the best of Italian Library music. 'Count Duke' opens with horizontal sounds, 'Mama Genso' is a playful and flute-led jaunt, 'Capuche' has a darker soul to its mellifluous chords and rolling drums and 'West Highland' is the most spaced out of the lot.

Review: Bobby Melody and Singie Singie's Two Uprising Stars was recorded with the Roots Radics band at Channel One studio. It was a classic as soon as it dropped and it has only got more revered over the years as a superb early dancehall album that lay a foundation for the newly emerging sound after the initial reggae revolution. It is an album that has tracks full of space, which allow the hissing hi hats and rumbling drums plenty of room to make their impact, as well as giving the vocals just as much air. This reissue will save you having to track down and pay large sums for an OG so don't sleep.

It finds him working with guest musicians such as Ken Boothe, Delroy Washington, Bob Davis, Gene Rondo and more including some former members of the Cimarons. The late great reggae engineer Lee "Scratch" Perry worked on some of these cuts at his legendary Black Arc Studio so they have a real stamp of authority and quality as they explore 12 sublime and classic reggae sounds. A timeless album for reggae heads old and new.

Review: Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces. Their single '007 (Shanty Town)' made him Jamaican music's first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. The Leslie Kong-produced Double Dekker was first issued in 1973 and consists of the best material Desmond recorded during his early years. In 1969 he scored a number-one hit with the legendary song Israelites. You'll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s developed to the Rocksteady sound. This was 'Ska' or 'Blue Beat' - (or its new name for the slower tempo rocksteady) - and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. He was really at his prime from 1969 to 1971 and recorded classics such as 'It Mek' (1969) and 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' (1970), which you'll both find on this record. Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name.

It of course induces the title track which was the first to make them stars on the international stage and even managed to hit the heady heights of #14 on the UK charts. Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Hovart is a dab hand at making anything he touches sound scarily authentic, and much of Version Excursions, the band's now reissued debut album, sounds like proper Jamaican rocksteady, roots and ska of the 1970s. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed, with highlights including their covers of 'Seven Nation Army', the Rolling Stones' 'Miss You' (reimagined as a toaster-sporting disco-reggae jam), and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'.

And that was the early 70s, when most of the music on this new album Valley Of Decision: The Collection is taken from. His style was high-impact reggae, often delivered with extra power from superb horn arrangements. For many, he was an important pioneer in the development of what became known as the rocksteady style and as such was known as the Godfather of Rocksteady.

The Remix of 'Blackbird' which opens up the album features Kings picking up the mic, while the mighty Nightmares on Wax gets busy with a version of 'Russia'. Yarni and Liv East take 'Silver & Gold' in the direction of loose, earthy house and Feiertag adds some shimmering dub tech, minimal and broken beat touches to his version of 'Mother Mother'. It's an ambitious and expansive collection for home listeners and eclectic DJs alike.

Review: With their high tempo combination of ska, metal, punk, funk, reggae and soul, many elements of Fishbone can be compared to other bands, but the group themselves have always sounded quite inimitable. Consistently invoking good times, they garnered a truly cult following, drawn by their diverse influences (and membership), pithy wit and razor sharp social commentary. A Los Angeles troupe held very close to many hearts, Fishbone, a five track EP, defines all that hyperbole. It's energetic, engaging, fun, but unarguably accomplished lyrically and musically. Featuring 'All We Have Is Now', their first single featuring longstanding member Chris Dowd since 1994 (he was with the band from formation in 1979 then went on hiatus), here's more than enough proof they're still as irresistible as ever.

Review: Frightnrs are considered one of Daptone's best artists but they have put out any new music since 201 after the tragic passing from ALS of the front man, Dan Klein. That wrong is righted here with Always, a new posthumous long player that comes on black wax as well as a coloured version. As fans would expect, it is a raw and soulful offering from the Queens-based reggae outfit that has been built around vocal stems that Klein recorded before his death. It forms a fitting final album from this outfit who also did more than reggae revivalism by adding elements of Motown, doo-wop, Blues and gospel.

Review: Nigerian disco-boogie act Galaxy's sole, self-titled album has become a holy grail for Afro-boogie collectors over the last few years, so it's no surprise to see Italian crate diggers Mondo Groove giving it the reissue treatment. It was produced by Jake Sollo - one of Nigeria's premier funk and soul musicians of the '70s and '80s - and recorded in the UK, though it was originally only ever released in his home country. Full of killer grooves (Randy Taylor's bass playing stands out), spacey synths and group vocals from the trio known as the 'Galaxy Girls', the set is packed with highlights. Our picks include a sublime, slow-motion reggae-boogie cover of the Police's 'The Bed's Too Big Without You', the intergalactic, club-ready brilliance of 'Galaxy' and the unbridled, life-affirming sweetness of 'Next To You'.

Production comes courtesy of Dubforce's Ippei Tatsuyama and features vocals from artist Kyoko Abe, making for ear-piquing foray into Japanese dub reworks.

Review: Widely lauded as the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Griffiths emerged onto the Jamaican music scene during the late 60s. She quickly made her mark with a series of popular singles during that period, building up to eventual international fame in the early 70s, side by side with her long-term friend and regular collaborator, Bob Andy. It was Andy and Griffith's uplifting reggae remake of Nina Simone's inspiring song, '(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black' (featured on the second LP) that really cemented Griffiths' position on the world stage. With a long list of successful hits following this initial emergence into international fame - the best of which can be found on this incredible new two-part LP - this collection is a beautiful homage to one of Jamaica's all time music legends.

Review: Peckings salutes the great Justin Hinds - world-renowned as one of the foremost pioneers of ska and rocksteady - with a Treasure Isle showcase of six lesser-sung original vocal tracks, followed by dub or instrumental of each track on red vinyl. Standout among the bunch is the the new organ cut to 'Say Me Say', which to this day carries the torch as one of Hinds' best and pluckiest songs to be recorded with his backing band the Dominoes and first released on Duke Reid way back in 1970. It's exclusive gems like this that verify Peckings; one of the realest labels still out there doing it.

There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

Because of copyright restrictions, this version has a new name that differs from the original House In Session but the tunes are all the same and pack just as much of a heavyweight sound. Thing superbly sun-kissed island rhythms with plenty of percussive prickliness and expressive keys. The deeper vibes of 'African Zulu (Sounds Only)' and romantic rhythms of 'Everybody Needs Love' are special indeed.

They had been famously asked to leave the Sly & The Family Stone tour as Sly thought they were being outperformed every night and getting better reactions from the crowd. Rather the hanging around, the band headed to Los Angeles to perform this session at the famous Capitol Studios. Famed producer Denny Cordell was given full permission to record the band during the session and now the full and intimate session of 12 complete tunes has been remastered for this special release. It comes on limited edition green vinyl and is a fine collector's piece as well as a nice bit of reggae history.

Bob Marley & the Wailers' Live! features the complete sets from both July 1975 shows they played in London at the Lyceum Theatre. The reissued version builds on the original reals which has just seven tunes from the second night by adding a further 15 to make it a complete document of the two memorable nights that were said to be so over subscribed some fans climbed onto the venue's roof to listen through an open hatch. It's an 18-track collection of dubplate recordings and also rare tracks that are the ultimate for fans of the band as well as dub in general. Some of these were made specifically for sound systems so have some seriously meaty low ends and there are also dub versions of classics like 'Concrete Jungle' and 'Soul Rebel' all packaged up in a picture sleeve and with an obi-strip. Review: First released as an unofficial bootleg LP way back in 1976 and later officially issued on CD, Bob Marley & The Wailers' 1975 concert at The Quiet Club in Chicago finally gets a 'proper' vinyl release. This time round, the hour-long recording has been stretched across two slabs of wax, pressed at 45rpm, to ensure a loud, bass-heavy cut. It's a fantastic snapshot of one of reggae music's most iconic bands at the peak of their powers, laying down fabulous versions of classic cuts including 'Trenchtown Rock', 'Natty Dread', 'Rebel Music', 'Midnight Ravers' and 'I Shot The Sheriff'. If you're a fan of Marley - and most people are to a certain extent - you need this in your life.

Review: Way back in 2005, P-Vine enlisted the help of Rita Marley to raid the archives of Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studio and record label in search of rare dubs and one-off dubplate mixes. The results were showcased on Welcome To Dubrock, which here finally gets a sequel. The concept remains the same, and the results are equally as impressive. Our picks include a wonderfully skeletal extended take on 'Rastaman Live Up', a tactile, suitably spaced-out dub of 'So Much Trouble', a Lee Perry-esque dub run-through of 'One Drop', and a sub-aquatic, echo-laden version of 'Ride Natty Ride'. It's Bob Marley and the Wailers at their best, but not how you've heard them before.

Review: Africa Unite (named after one of his 1979 tracks) is an album that finds Bob Marley's greatest tunes all reworked in a contemporary Afrobeat style by fine modern African musicians. It's a great project that Marley himself would surely have approved of and would have no doubt been involved with had he still been around. Often times the vocals are left quite similar to the originals, but reworked into languid electronic rhythms with nice noodling synths and plenty of brass and horns. Standouts for us include 'Redemption Song' (feat Ami Faku) and 'Three Little Birds' (feat Teni & Oxlade).

Review: The legend of Bob Marley lives on and is as strong as ever every time a new germination comes along and connects with his universal messages of peace, love and understanding. The man with a million hits of course had the eternal support of The Wailers to help him spread his good vibes and Legend is an album that shows this off best. This special edition picture disc is a real collectors edition and comes with all the standards - "Could You Be Loved", "I Shot The Sheriff", "Buffalo Soldier" and many more.

Review: Old Soul showcases eight-time Grammy-winner Stephen Marley's expanding musical horizons as a singer and songwriter with a new acoustic, soul-leaning album. Boasting an array of special collaborations, including Jack Johnson, Bob Weir, Eric Clapton, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Ziggy Marley, Buju Banton and Slightly Stoopid. Described by close confidants as a coming-of-age journey - expanding on the legacy of his time-honoured father as the second son of reggae legend Bob Marley - this is Stephen's fleshed-out sonic methodology and blueprint in sound, for traversing the trials faced by a family in the limelight of posterity.

Review: Jackie Mittoo is a true legend of Jamaican music, with credits to too many records to count from his days as the go-to keys man in the fabled surrounds of Studio One. From the breakthrough years of The Skatalites to thousands of recordings for the likes of Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, The Wailers, Marcia Griffiths and countless more, his service to reggae is without question. His solo works are a treasure in themselves, which Soul Jazz knew only too well when they put together this dazzling compilation back in 2000. It's been due a repress for some time - a double pack of pure keys-led bliss from a reggae icon given the shine he so thoroughly deserves.

Review: Regarded as "one of reggae's quietest superstars", Jackie Mittoo aka. "The Keyboard King" carved a remarkable path in reggae music. A protege of Sly Stone, he began his career as part of Studio One's in-house recording band, and later went on to work with artists such as Bob Marley, UB40, Barry White, Peter Tosh and Oscar Peterson. This album was the result of a rare occasion of being on tour in Africa and establishing musical connections with musicians from Ghana; it was recorded in Accra and mixed in London. Predominantly instrumental, In Africa is essential to any dub-conscientious record collection, as it culminates the career of a reggae legend under new influences in West Africa, resulting in an unmistakably characteristic modern dub sound. Reissued on vinyl with remixes previously only availably on CD format.
