Review: The 4th Street Orchestra is one of several aliases used by Matumbi, which was actually one of Britain's first and most original reggae bands back in 1971 when they were founded initially. For the best showcase of their sound look no further than this landmark roots record Ah Who Seh? Go Deh! which came in 1976 and has been hard to find since. This is a first ever official reissue of it and finds Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell tapping into his vast knowledge of sound system culture and laying down heavy rhythms with plenty of Jah-worshipping, Zion-referencing lyrics and soulful yearnings. It's complex and cultured and packs a true bass heavy punch.

Review: The Aggrolites formed in 2002 and brought together two different Los Angeles reggae and ska bands in the Vessels and The Rhythm Doctors. They started as a backing outfit for Derrick Morgan but soon went on to do their own thing, uncoiling this debut album from 2003. It was laid down in just one day, with each track being done in one take and lyrics being dreamt up on the spot. The results are compelling and take in high speed riddims, swaggering dubs and even a cover of a nursery rhyme.

Review: New school reggae and organic rocksteady sounds from The Appetizers never sounded so good as on this fresh long player. It's on heavyweight vinyl for serious sound system detonation and comes with plenty of catchy hooks and buttery smooth vocals. The guitar riffs are subtle, the bass fat and the rhythms all nice and earthy and original. Lyrics muse on the usual subjects of love, loss social turmoil and are well written even though this band is Italian-born, forming in Milan in 2020.

Review: Bad Manners will always be known for their standout tune but they recorded a great wealth of other superb sounds from the mid-seventies onwards. Back in 2013, Buster Bloodvessel's ska and 2-tone band had some of their best unreleased material pulled together for this album, Rare & Fatty. It arrived back then on picture disc but is impossible to find so this reissue on nice red wax is welcome indeed. It's a wild ride through tongue in cheek 2-tone, traditional dub sounds and characterful ska that reminds us that this outfit is one of the best-loved in recent British music history.

Review: Rhino recently acquired the worldwide rights to The Beat's catalogue, and is marking the beginning of this exciting partnership with the release of an expanded version of the influential ska group's 1980 debut, I Just Can't Stop It. A fixture of ska and two-tone in their day, The Beat laid down an infectious toe-tapper with I Just Can't Stop It, imbuing the natural compulsion to dance with the hidden materiality of class struggle; with deeply socially charged lyrics skirting over the jubilant instrumental likes of 'Best Friend', 'Mirror In The Bathroom' and 'Twist And Crawl', to contrasting but convincing effect. This acclaimed fixture of British ska comes reissued as a 2-LP set on magenta vinyl, following up the RSD crystal clear edition released earlier in 2023.

Review: Max Guiget under his well-established Blundetto guise is one of France's more soulful producers. He dropped a great soundtrack back in February and now returns with the second volume of his superbly emotive dub work. It is infused with all sorts of knowing references from jazz funk and soul to the best of Italian Library music. 'Count Duke' opens with horizontal sounds, 'Mama Genso' is a playful and flute-led jaunt, 'Capuche' has a darker soul to its mellifluous chords and rolling drums and 'West Highland' is the most spaced out of the lot.

Recorded at the famed Record Plant studio in California, the album exudes the essence of Marley's charismatic stage presence and the Wailers' tight musical prowess. Review: Bobby Melody and Singie Singie's Two Uprising Stars was recorded with the Roots Radics band at Channel One studio. It was a classic as soon as it dropped and it has only got more revered over the years as a superb early dancehall album that lay a foundation for the newly emerging sound after the initial reggae revolution. It is an album that has tracks full of space, which allow the hissing hi hats and rumbling drums plenty of room to make their impact, as well as giving the vocals just as much air. This reissue will save you having to track down and pay large sums for an OG so don't sleep.

It finds him working with guest musicians such as Ken Boothe, Delroy Washington, Bob Davis, Gene Rondo and more including some former members of the Cimarons. The late great reggae engineer Lee "Scratch" Perry worked on some of these cuts at his legendary Black Arc Studio so they have a real stamp of authority and quality as they explore 12 sublime and classic reggae sounds. A timeless album for reggae heads old and new.

Review: Byron Lee was an important part of Jamaican music from his first appearance in the 60s and onwards. Amongst his bustling back catalogue is this cheery classic from 1980, which keeps the heart and soul of ska alive, with an emphasis on the soul. The rhythms are reliably skanking throughout, whether stopping by the melancholic 'Shoobe Doobe Doo' or the chirpy 'Bend Down Low'. This is ska in its truest sense, with an infectious energy which speaks universally to young and old, hip and square. You can also hear the strong US RnB roots of the music in Lee's songwriting, and it tugs at the heart strings in just the same way. Grab an immaculate album of honest, earnest songwriting magic with all the irrepressible joy of Jamaica coursing through its veins.

They followed up in 1982 with This Heart Of Mine which celebrated its 40th-anniversary last year with a limited edition reissue and now the original version gets another one. The album is a much sought-after slice of sweet, heavy lovers' rock and roots for serious reggae diggers. It has plenty of smoldering sounds and timeless lovers' rock grooves that still make as much of an impression now as they ever did.

Review: Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces. Their single '007 (Shanty Town)' made him Jamaican music's first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. The Leslie Kong-produced Double Dekker was first issued in 1973 and consists of the best material Desmond recorded during his early years. In 1969 he scored a number-one hit with the legendary song Israelites. You'll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s developed to the Rocksteady sound. This was 'Ska' or 'Blue Beat' - (or its new name for the slower tempo rocksteady) - and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. He was really at his prime from 1969 to 1971 and recorded classics such as 'It Mek' (1969) and 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' (1970), which you'll both find on this record. Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name.

It of course induces the title track which was the first to make them stars on the international stage and even managed to hit the heady heights of #14 on the UK charts. It's an album that shows how ska from the mid-60s had an influence on the rocksteady sound and as well as the 'Spanky Town' classic you'll hear gems like 'Israelites' from 1968 and 'It Miek' from 1969.

Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Hovart is a dab hand at making anything he touches sound scarily authentic, and much of Version Excursions, the band's now reissued debut album, sounds like proper Jamaican rocksteady, roots and ska of the 1970s. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed, with highlights including their covers of 'Seven Nation Army', the Rolling Stones' 'Miss You' (reimagined as a toaster-sporting disco-reggae jam), and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'.

Review: Jamaican singer-songwriter Alton Nehemiah Ellis OD has been inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame since 2006 - just two years before his death - which shows how much he contributed to the genre in his heyday. And that was the early 70s, when most of the music on this new album Valley Of Decision: The Collection is taken from. His style was high-impact reggae, often delivered with extra power from superb horn arrangements. For many, he was an important pioneer in the development of what became known as the rocksteady style and as such was known as the Godfather of Rocksteady.

The ask, rocksteady and reggae group included Leonard Dillon, Stephen Taylor and Aston Morris and worked with the legendary Coxsone Dodd in the sixties before later moving on. This collection includes their biggest hit, "Everything Crash", which criticised the political situation in Jamaica at the time, which included power cuts and rationing and plenty of clashes with the authorities. It is one of many highlights in this fine overview.

Review: Fat Freddy's Drop originally released Blackbird in 2013 on their own The Drop label, and now they're revisiting this surefire classic with a remix package which takes their mellow, soulful dub strain in some surprising directions. The Remix of 'Blackbird' which opens up the album features Kings picking up the mic, while the mighty Nightmares on Wax gets busy with a version of 'Russia'. Yarni and Liv East take 'Silver & Gold' in the direction of loose, earthy house and Feiertag adds some shimmering dub tech, minimal and broken beat touches to his version of 'Mother Mother'. It's an ambitious and expansive collection for home listeners and eclectic DJs alike.

Review: With their high tempo combination of ska, metal, punk, funk, reggae and soul, many elements of Fishbone can be compared to other bands, but the group themselves have always sounded quite inimitable. Consistently invoking good times, they garnered a truly cult following, drawn by their diverse influences (and membership), pithy wit and razor sharp social commentary. A Los Angeles troupe held very close to many hearts, Fishbone, a five track EP, defines all that hyperbole. It's energetic, engaging, fun, but unarguably accomplished lyrically and musically. Featuring 'All We Have Is Now', their first single featuring longstanding member Chris Dowd since 1994 (he was with the band from formation in 1979 then went on hiatus), here's more than enough proof they're still as irresistible as ever.

Review: Frightnrs are considered one of Daptone's best artists but they have put out any new music since 201 after the tragic passing from ALS of the front man, Dan Klein. That wrong is righted here with Always, a new posthumous long player that comes on black wax as well as a coloured version. As fans would expect, it is a raw and soulful offering from the Queens-based reggae outfit that has been built around vocal stems that Klein recorded before his death. It forms a fitting final album from this outfit who also did more than reggae revivalism by adding elements of Motown, doo-wop, Blues and gospel.

It was produced by Jake Sollo - one of Nigeria's premier funk and soul musicians of the '70s and '80s - and recorded in the UK, though it was originally only ever released in his home country. Full of killer grooves (Randy Taylor's bass playing stands out), spacey synths and group vocals from the trio known as the 'Galaxy Girls', the set is packed with highlights. Our picks include a sublime, slow-motion reggae-boogie cover of the Police's 'The Bed's Too Big Without You', the intergalactic, club-ready brilliance of 'Galaxy' and the unbridled, life-affirming sweetness of 'Next To You'.

Production comes courtesy of Dubforce's Ippei Tatsuyama and features vocals from artist Kyoko Abe, making for ear-piquing foray into Japanese dub reworks.

Review: Widely lauded as the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Griffiths emerged onto the Jamaican music scene during the late 60s. She quickly made her mark with a series of popular singles during that period, building up to eventual international fame in the early 70s, side by side with her long-term friend and regular collaborator, Bob Andy. It was Andy and Griffith's uplifting reggae remake of Nina Simone's inspiring song, '(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black' (featured on the second LP) that really cemented Griffiths' position on the world stage. With a long list of successful hits following this initial emergence into international fame - the best of which can be found on this incredible new two-part LP - this collection is a beautiful homage to one of Jamaica's all time music legends.

Review: Peckings salutes the great Justin Hinds - world-renowned as one of the foremost pioneers of ska and rocksteady - with a Treasure Isle showcase of six lesser-sung original vocal tracks, followed by dub or instrumental of each track on red vinyl. Standout among the bunch is the the new organ cut to 'Say Me Say', which to this day carries the torch as one of Hinds' best and pluckiest songs to be recorded with his backing band the Dominoes and first released on Duke Reid way back in 1970. It's exclusive gems like this that verify Peckings; one of the realest labels still out there doing it.

Holt made it onto the world stage in 1974 with his legendary 1000 Volts of Holt album and its raw mix of rhythm and sophisticated orchestral arrangements. He had a global hit with 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' and was one of the standout solo performers of his era. This mighty collection shows just why he was so well-loved and respected.

It is no wonder then that the Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter can be heard on tons of classic tunes and records across the seventies. For the fascinating Peacemaker, he worked with plenty of talented musicians (Sly and Robbie and Lindel Lewis were amongst them) and recorded across Jamaica and the UK. The results take in love-struck ballads, plenty of direct social commentaries and timeless reggae rollers.

He upgrades the Gregory Isaacs Kingston 11 catalogue with a truly a-list selection of talent from Jamaica including Sean Paul, Shaggy, Alborosie, Jesse Royal, Bounty Killer and several more. They all bring the down style to the material and some of Gregory Isaacs's finest performances. Undeniable is an 11-track long player filled with this artist's trademark sense of passion, romance and heartfelt songwriting. The sounds are a contemporary take on reggae with a fresh edge as well as a nod to the originators. The first single 'Everything' featuring Ghanaian star Stonebwoy has already pleased fans. The two collaborators hook up to great effect as they layer up soulful hooks that lament a love gone bad.

This unique album combines Jay Z's famous Black Album acapellas with classic Studio One reggae riddims from the very heart of 1970s Kingston. Review: Honey-voiced mic man Anthony Johnson's classic eighties dancehall album Reggae Feelings was recorded at Channel One with The Roots Radics. It was produced by Delroy Wright and Toyan, and mixed and voiced at King Tubbys, so the credits alone tell you of its quality. These are heavy rhythms with raw drums, hints of digital synthesis and some great mic work that ranges from wordless ad libs to yearning pleads. It still sounds fresh today, with plenty of sci-fi production motifs over the organic drums.

It came in 1993 and took in and spat out many of that era's big sounds - pop, ballads and of course dancehall. His singing is superb throughout as you would expect of someone who worked with all the greats, from Lineal Thompson to Lee "Scratch" Perry. Something of a lost gem, this album is now available again courtesy of Radiation Roots.

His revolutionary super power sound reinvigorated reggae with fresh energy and charged up 80s dancehalls with all new vibes. The British film director, DJ and musician is a vital part of the UK's musical fabric from his days making videos for The Clash and Elvis Costello to his work with the Big Audio Dynamite band he co-founded. All that history is distilled into this sublime selection of sounds across four vital sounds fo wax. There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

Because of copyright restrictions, this version has a new name that differs from the original House In Session but the tunes are all the same and pack just as much of a heavyweight sound. Thing superbly sun-kissed island rhythms with plenty of percussive prickliness and expressive keys. The deeper vibes of 'African Zulu (Sounds Only)' and romantic rhythms of 'Everybody Needs Love' are special indeed.

It is their first new studio work in almost a decade and now it arrives on double vinyl. We're told that the record was written with the mantra 'Let Madness be Madness' and that shows with some real musical freedom and plenty of the quirky charms the band has always dealt in. It is uplifting yet melancholic in all the right places and another fine success for this Great British band.

Review: Six albums in and Madness had firmly established themselves as part of the British pop firmament when they released Mad Not Mad in 1985. It's a divisive album which captures Suggs' Camden Town likely lads in a period of transition as the 80s wore on and musical styles shifted. Moving on from the chirpy ska of their early days they moved into a more polished pop sound which landed them a billing on NME's 'Greatest Albums Of All Time' just weeks after its release. With the singles 'Uncle Sam' and 'Sweetest Girl' nestled amongst some of the bands' most introspective tracks (see 'Mad Not Mad') it's an important part of the Madness legacy, handily repressed on 180 gm wax for your listening pleasure.

Bob Marley & the Wailers' Live! features the complete sets from both July 1975 shows they played in London at the Lyceum Theatre. The reissued version builds on the original reals which has just seven tunes from the second night by adding a further 15 to make it a complete document of the two memorable nights that were said to be so over subscribed some fans climbed onto the venue's roof to listen through an open hatch. They had been famously asked to leave the Sly & The Family Stone tour as Sly thought they were being outperformed every night and getting better reactions from the crowd. Rather the hanging around, the band headed to Los Angeles to perform this session at the famous Capitol Studios. Famed producer Denny Cordell was given full permission to record the band during the session and now the full and intimate session of 12 complete tunes has been remastered for this special release. It comes on limited edition green vinyl and is a fine collector's piece as well as a nice bit of reggae history.

Review: First released as a CD in 2005 - documenting an obscure live show by the reggae second coming and his band - this is Bob Marley And The Wailers' lesser-known 'Studio Recordings In To The Matrix'. This captures the moment at which the troupe performed a revered show at the Matrix in San Francisco; in the midst of an attention war with Sly & The Family Stone, it was one of many key moments that upped the band's status in US markets.

Review: Jamaican reggae heavyweight and his celebrated band The Wailers had some of their best cuts compiled onto this Welcome To Dub Rock collection a few years ago. It's an 18-track collection of dubplate recordings and also rare tracks that are the ultimate for fans of the band as well as dub in general. Some of these were made specifically for sound systems so have some seriously meaty low ends and there are also dub versions of classics like 'Concrete Jungle' and 'Soul Rebel' all packaged up in a picture sleeve and with an obi-strip. Superb stuff by all.

Review: First released as an unofficial bootleg LP way back in 1976 and later officially issued on CD, Bob Marley & The Wailers' 1975 concert at The Quiet Club in Chicago finally gets a 'proper' vinyl release. This time round, the hour-long recording has been stretched across two slabs of wax, pressed at 45rpm, to ensure a loud, bass-heavy cut. It's a fantastic snapshot of one of reggae music's most iconic bands at the peak of their powers, laying down fabulous versions of classic cuts including 'Trenchtown Rock', 'Natty Dread', 'Rebel Music', 'Midnight Ravers' and 'I Shot The Sheriff'. If you're a fan of Marley - and most people are to a certain extent - you need this in your life.

Review: Way back in 2005, P-Vine enlisted the help of Rita Marley to raid the archives of Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studio and record label in search of rare dubs and one-off dubplate mixes. The results were showcased on Welcome To Dubrock, which here finally gets a sequel. The concept remains the same, and the results are equally as impressive. Our picks include a wonderfully skeletal extended take on 'Rastaman Live Up', a tactile, suitably spaced-out dub of 'So Much Trouble', a Lee Perry-esque dub run-through of 'One Drop', and a sub-aquatic, echo-laden version of 'Ride Natty Ride'. It's Bob Marley and the Wailers at their best, but not how you've heard them before.

Review: Africa Unite (named after one of his 1979 tracks) is an album that finds Bob Marley's greatest tunes all reworked in a contemporary Afrobeat style by fine modern African musicians. It's a great project that Marley himself would surely have approved of and would have no doubt been involved with had he still been around. Often times the vocals are left quite similar to the originals, but reworked into languid electronic rhythms with nice noodling synths and plenty of brass and horns. Standouts for us include 'Redemption Song' (feat Ami Faku) and 'Three Little Birds' (feat Teni & Oxlade).

Review: Catch A Fire, Bob Marley and The Wailers' seminal first release on Island Records, universally regarded as the album that put reggae music on the global stage, is being re-issued via UMe on November 3 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its original release in 1973. The album features nine songs, two of which were written by Peter Tosh and the rest by Marley. 'Slave Driver', one of the most powerful tracks on the album, will be released as a single, accompanied by remarkable live performance footage recently unearthed from the legendary Edmonton show in England in 1973.

Review: Bob Marley & The Chineke! Orchestra marked the 60th anniversary of Jamaican Independence with a special concert that showcased Marley's most famous songs all recorded with new instrumentation and orchestration. Trevor Nelson presented the project and he tapped up Skip Marley, an inheritor of his family's famous musical legacy and who made his debut UK performance for this concert which was recorded for this album on Island Records. British singer-songwriter JP Cooper plus Jamaican born and Birmingham based soul, gospel and R&B legend Ruby Turner also featured.
