  1. Horace Andy - "Fever" (3:47)
  2. Im & The Agg - "The Flue" (2:04)
Review: "Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

  1. The Master Blenda (5:09)
  2. The Master Blenda (Time Cow dub) (5:11)
Review: Nick "Bobby Blackbird" Dean is the Equinoxx producer behind "The Master Blenda" - a new instrumental that nearly never was: in 2015, he was involved in a near fatal car crash that left him hospitalised for three months. Grammy-nominated band Raging Fyah, horn maestro Stingwray and keys legend Franklyn "Bubbler" Wahl all feature on the A side - an upbeat ska anthem with big leads and a high feel good factor. Exile Di Brave takes over the flipside dub, which is an exercise in fantastic studio trickery and oodles of reverb. This is a sweet new 10" from this ever more essential label, especially as it is one that might never have been.

  2. Blundetto - "Echoes Of My Mind"
Review: GrandMagnetto, masters of skanking pop reggae covers,
return with 'Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nilsson, off of
the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack. Blundetto transformed
the track into a killer deep dubby hit. Both tracks are storming.

Captive (7")

  1. Lee Perry - "Captive" (4:13)
  2. The Upsetters - "Dub Cap" (3:43)
Review: Roots Vibration keep up their tireless dub reissue work with another dig into the untouchable back catalogue of the one and only Lee "Scratch" Perry. Back to 1978, this is a slab of gold that was first recorded in the revered Black Ark studios the dub don owned before burning it down in a stoned and paranoid state. "Captive" finds him musing inwardly on the continual enslavement of black people in the West, calling for mental and spiritual liberation. The Upsetters once again dub it out on the flip side in excellent fashion.

  1. I Won't Let You Cry (2:47)
  2. I'm Sorry (2:44)
Review: Rock A Shaka's "Prince Buster Classics" series of seven-inch singles has served up some scintillating Ska of late, mixing tracks from the great man with ones he produced for other artists. The latest "45" in the series is more straightforward and simply gathers together two of the Ska pioneer's greatest cuts. First up on side A is 1966's "I Won't Let You Cry", a super-sweet fusion of mid-tempo ska rhythms, dewy-eyed soul vocals from the man himself and nods towards the American rhythm and blues style that so inspired him. That rhythm and blues influence comes to the fore on flipside "I'm Sorry", a loved-up, organ-rich number that features some of Buster's most heartfelt vocals.

  1. Armageddon (feat Runkus) (4:09)
  2. Armageddon (dub - Gentleman's dub club 8 - track mix) (4:14)
Review: The Skints are a tropical punk four piece from the big smoke riding high off the back of sold out EU and UK tours. This is the second limited-edition 45 to come along with their new album "Swimming Lessons" and it's easy to see why they've chosen "Armageddon". Jamaican rising star Runkus delivers a bold commentary while dark, stepping dub-wise rhythms carry his message. Flip over for the "Gentleman's Dub Club 8-Track Mix" - a trippy one laden with reverb and extra weighty bass.

  1. Baba Roots (2:50)
  2. 150 Seconds (2:33)
Review: The Slackers are a legendary ska outfit for good reason: they've put out more than 20 albums and countless singles across a fine career that dates all the way back to 1991. Now they're back on Names You Can Trust with a pair of irresistible cuts. "Baba Roots" is a feel good and swaggering ska tune with sliding bass and great lead horns that bring the sunshine. "150 Seconds" on the flip is a slower and steadier tune with laidback horn leads that are more loved up and unhurried.

  2. Strength & Power (version) (3:40)
Review: Canada isn't often associated with dub but on this occasion it's where Belgium's Roots Vibration head for a fine reissue. The Uplifter were a duo formed of vocalists Egbert Dennis and Marcel Williams and their poison is heavy bass. On "Strength & Power" they are blissed out and laid back, while the little guitar riffs get you in a trance as the drums boom away. The slick dub on the flipside is even more drenched in warmth and reverb. This is a limited edition of 500 so move quick.

  1. Armagideon Time (Discomix vocal) (2:28)
  2. Armagideon Time (Discomix version) (2:38)
Review: Studio One have put out plenty of big tunes and this is the latest to get a big reissue on a super loud-cut 12" single for extra devastating impact. It's a well-known classic every self-respecting reggae fan should know and blows up any party, especially when tweaked like these two versions. They were originally produced by Studio One bossman Coxsone Dodd and have been covered by The Clash as well as sampled by The Fugees and hip hop MC KRS One. The snaking lead synth, the rumbling drums and classic ska trumpet are all straight up irresistible.

Review: The Aggrolites formed in 2002 and brought together two different Los Angeles reggae and ska bands in the Vessels and The Rhythm Doctors. They started as a backing outfit for Derrick Morgan but soon went on to do their own thing, uncoiling this debut album from 2003. It was laid down in just one day, with each track being done in one take and lyrics being dreamt up on the spot. The results are compelling and take in high speed riddims, swaggering dubs and even a cover of a nursery rhyme.

Review: This newly expanded reissue of classic Desmond Dekker compilation "Double Dekker" includes six rare bonus cuts next to the rest of the material that helped it make such an international impact. There isn't much cross over with other compilations, either, making it a must for fans of the late vocalist. Interestingly, this release was compiled after Dekker had left Trojan for the newly formed rival Creole, and it went on to become one of their biggest sellers, at the same time as putting his newer recordings into the shadows. So sink in and enjoy one of rocksteady's best.

Review: Since debuting in 2002, Honest Jon's series on "the sound of young black London" - entitled "London Is The Place For Me" - has done a terrific job in highlighting the changing sound of Afro-Caribbean music in Britain following the post-war rush of emigration from the Commonwealth to the UK. Here the label offers up a double-disc set boasting volumes seven and eight. The first disc focuses on calypso, mento, Joropo and steel band music from the 1950s and early 60s, with a multitude of former SS Empire Windrush passengers combining island rhythms with anglicized lyrics. Disc two looks at the career of calypso legend Lord Kitchener while he was resident in London (1948-62), offering a welcome celebration of the Trinidadian's rise to fame in his adopted home country.

Here though it's all about the latter, with smash hits like "Sun Is Shining", "African Herbsman," and "Trench Town Rock" all present and correct across five slabs of wax, with a poster also included. Add this to your collection and you'll have all the maestro's greatest work in one place.

It found them move away from their earlier ska days but not quite settle into the slower tempos the rest of the big players were exploring. As such it's a speedy listen with uptempo vocals that most frequently muse on love. There are plenty of standouts such as "Got To Feel," "Koo Koo" and "Pee Pee Cluck Cluck" that still sound fresh today, especially on a limited edition individually numbered orange vinyl.

Review: The Pioneers were pivotal during the skinhead reggae period and their 1970 album Battle Of The Giants on the mighty Trojan Records is as fine as they come. At the time it was released, the band was spending lots of time in the UK and taking cues from ska, but always returned to Jamaica to record. It shows in a record that mixes driving reggae grooves with more pop leaning songs and flourishes of soul. Swaggering rhythms like "Samfie Man" sit next to love struck tunes like "Consider Me" and it's not hard to see why this outfit was one of the first to have international reggae hits in the post-rocksteady era.

"In The Viper's Shadow" is a real hotlist of dub kingpins with the likes of Tippa Irie, George Dekker, Earl 16 and Horseman all contributing to a melting pot of sounds that spans multiple eras and influences. Many of these tracks have been popular during Prince Fatty's live shows over the last couple of years, from the soul infused cover of the Temptations' "Get Ready" to the sun kissed and lumpy drums and endless reverb of "Everything Crash". Timeless stuff.

Known and loved by rocksteady fans round the world, this outfit is led by the captivating vocals of Isa Garcia and since 2005 they've turned out a number of acclaimed albums. This new one is an uptempo affair with energetic grooves, hints of American ska, skinhead and 2 tone, and attitude to spare. The songs are both catchy and dance-y, and the whole album is wonderfully colourful.

Review: Since moving to Sao Paolo from New York nearly two decades ago, in-demand producer and dub mixer Victor Price hasn't released much solo material. In fact, "Drink" is his first solo album since 2002 and has been trailed as a natural successor to that album, "Smoke". This is because it expands on the "samba Ska" blueprint he established on that much-loved set. In practice that means tracks that craftily combine elements of both Brazilian music and Jamaican ska, dub and reggae, with a few jazz and blues influences thrown in. As a result, "Drink" makes for hugely enjoyable, sun-soaked listening, with the Afro-Cuban/Ska fusion of "Bebida", relaxed "Simao", skanking "Because I Can" and pleasingly dubbed-out "Time To Go" standing out.

This particular compilation was first put out in 1970 and was an immediate best seller: it details the transformation of late rocksteady into early reggae and takes in all the essentials from that time, making it a must for fans of the sixties sounds, or those looking to brush up on their knowledge. The orange vinyl features gems from Joya Landis, Tommy McCook, Alton Ellis and Winston Wright.

Review: The latest Studio One release to be released on Soul Jazz Records features another fine selection of classic artists from the foundation label of reggae. Rude Boys are synonymous with Jamaican dancehall culture from the present day going back to the very early days of Sir Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid's first sound-clashes in Kingston. 'Studio One Rude Boy' features artists and songs about rude boys and rude boy culture from all periods of Studio One's history. The album features ska, rocksteady, DJs, roots and dub. The album features classic tracks from Jamaica's finest singers and groups such as The Wailers, John Holt, The Wailing Souls, Dennis Brown alongside super-rare tracks from artists such as Mr Foundation, Dudley Sibbley and The Soul Brothers all recorded under Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. Musical backing comes from the legendary in-house bands - The Skatalites, The Sound Dimension, Soul Vendors and Soul Defenders - who provide the classic Studio One rhythms so influential in the history of reggae. All the eighteen tracks have been newly digitally re-mastered for this album and the album comes with full sleevenotes, photos and text making this another essential Studio One reggae release for connoisseurs of reggae and newcomers alike.

Review: Later this spring, authors Paul 'Smiler' Anderson and Mark 'Bax' Baxter will release "Scorcha!", a coffee table book celebrating the skinhead and suedehead movement of the late 1960s and early '70s. For the uninitiated, it was a largely white British working class movement inspired by both the dress of the Windrush generation and the ska, rocksteady and reggae music they brought with them from the Caribbean. This excellent ten disc seven-inch box set from Trojan has been designed as a musical accompaniment to the book. It boasts a wealth of classic cuts popular within the skinhead and suedehead scenes, both from well-known Jamaican artists and those that have largely been overlooked.

Review: Trojan have pulled together some of reggae's finest moments here, and importantly they come from some of the genre's most vital female talents, who can often be overlooked in favour of their more visible male counterparts. Across four sides of vinyl the likes of Millie Small, Althea & Donna, Marcia Griffiths, Phyllis Dillon, and Susan Cadogan all deservingly feature and personal sleeve notes from musician Rhoda Dakar also add real value. Big hits, unknown rarities and some brilliantly wonky numbers like Sandra Robinson's "Sensi For Sale" make this an instant NEED!

Review: This limited edition 7" box set is a special 40th anniversary reissue from Chrysalis. Compiled by Jerry Dammers, it's a treasure trove of his favourite singles from the label between 1979 and 1984 with standards from Madness, The Beat and Dammers' group, The Specials. From the horn led joy of "A Message To You Rudy" to the uptempo cover of "The Tears Of A Clown" via a bristling live version of The Specials' "The Guns Of Navarone", this is a fine overview of ska's golden age.

Review: Revolution Records has always been one of reggae's most intriguing labels, in part because it was not based in Kingston, Jamaica, but rather a recording studio in South London. The imprint was the work of Dave Hadfield and John Harper, and between 1968 and 1970 released a wealth of British-made rocksteady and reggae that stands up to this day. Aside from showcasing over 40 tracks from the label's catalogue - painstakingly restored from records and tapes - "Unusual Reggae" also comes with a fine 28-page booklet that tells the story of the previously mysterious label in vivid detail. A must-have for reggae fans of all ages.

Review: There isn't much backstory to this new one from Spanish label Metal Bastard Enterprise. They've pull together various unnamed artists to pay tribute to Bob Marley in various weird and wonderful ways - hymnal remakes with electric Rhodes chords and big rock riffs, live sounding cover versions and various other reworkings of the reggae legend's biggest tunes from "Get Up Stand Up" to "I Shot The Sheriff" to "Is This Love?". The music sounds modern, crisp and fresh, and certainly puts a different spin on these tried and tested classics.
