So Many Ways (reissue)

So Many Ways (3:59)
J'attends Les Marines (3:55)
So Many Ways (Cherrystones Electric So Far I edit) (5:20)
So Many Ways (Cherrystones Slow Many Ways rework) (6:36)
Review: This marks a first ever reissue of this cult-status punk-funk, no wave electro post-punk fusion 45 from 1979. It's by post-Wayne County Electric Chairs and has been produced by David Cunningam and now expanded to 12". The first tune 'So Many Ways' has Val Haller on lead vocals and sounded at the time very different from anything else the band had done. A hypnotic, sure charged groove that still sounds years ahead of its time. 'J'attends Les Marines' is a rework of 'Waiting For The Marines' from the Things Your Mother album but with some added dub and experimental flourishes. Two versions of 'So Many Ways' then close out this fine curio.

Hey You (2:10)
Review: The Exploited are one of the most important Scottish punk bands, period. Their hardcore sound started belting out from Edinburgh in 1979 and by the time they released their second album Troops Of Tomorrow three years later they were UK-wide legends. Of all the tracks on the album, 'USA' is one of the sharpest, calling out the superpower in no uncertain times set to a pile-driving hardcore beat. Now Cleopatra are pressing the tune on 7" for the very first time, backed with 'UK82' and 'Hey You', the latter of which was originally a secret track on Troops Of Tomorrow.

Review: Spin Age Blasters is a compilation album by Electric Eels, a protopunk band from Cleveland, Ohio, active between 1972 and 1975. The album collects 24 tracks from their rare and unreleased recordings, including demos, live sessions, and studio cuts. The Electric Eels' noisy and chaotic blend of garage rock, free jazz, and art punk was influenced by every figure discernible between Captain Beefheart and Ornette Coleman; this is a remarkable breadth, unmistakably heard on this whopper, which captures their haphazard sound and breathtaking live synergy.

Review: Woking based Metalcore behemoths, Employed To Serve, delivered their most precise accomplishment to date with last year's 'Conquering.'

The fourth full-length from the quintet showcases a simultaneous embracing and disregard for their bevvy of influences ranging from Zao and Converge to Machine Head.

It's in the middleground where ruthless bastardisations of frantic mathcore and groove laden nu-metal coalesce to conjure crushing bangers such as 'Twist The Blade' or lead single, 'Mark Of The Grave.'

Review: Enter Shikari belong to a particularly impressive hardcore subset that seem to get better with each passing year and record. A Kiss For the Whole World is their seventh studio outing, but it sounds almost like a band exploding into action for the first time. A high energy declaration of intent and bold approach to stamping their personality down on the planet they so eagerly want to embrace.

Uplifting would be another - far simpler - way to describe what's here. These are anthems in the truest sense, with tracks like 'Dead Wood' reaching for the kind of euphoric sonic heights few outfits can hope to come close to. A rousing, unifying number. Of course, in typical Shikari fashion, it's not actually all so lead- single-worthy, with some of the finest moments far less in your face. Such as the classical-inspired 'Bloodshot (Coda)', or the half-time drum & bass tech of 'Feed Your Soul'.

Review: Another year, another vital repress of Scotland's greatest punk export The Exploited's adored yet overlooked fourth full-length Horror Epics. Originally released in 1985 and arriving two years after the career high-point that was Let's Start A War... (Said Maggie One Day), fan appreciation for the project has only ballooned in the decades since, with a myriad of 7" singles and compilations often boasting at least one of the album's essential cuts such as 'No More Idols' or 'Treat You Like Shit'. For both seasoned heads and newcomers alike, who aren't bothered by the piecemeal approach, take advantage of Radiation Records' tireless efforts to constantly keep such punk classics in circulation in their intended form.

Review: Sludge-inflected noise-rock trio Eye Flys may have whittled themselves down following the departure of second guitarist/founding member Spencer Hazzard (Full Of Hell), but that seemingly hasn't diluted their sonic hubris by one single iota. Following on from their 2020 debut full-length Tub Of Lard and 2021's Exigent Circumstance EP, this self-titled sophomore effort continues their pummelling examination of a broken world and systemic prejudices through grinding, buzzsaw riffs and barrages of fuzzed out grooves that echo the likes of Melvins only if fed through a rusted woodchipper. Ugly music for ugly times.
