This newly reissued Numero version of The Belles' 'Melvin' is a throwback to the 1966 garage rock riffer by the all-girl group, known for their releases on two released Tiara Records around that time. A monologuing, excitable song, 'Melvin' hears the girls pine after one local stud, Melvin, who visits the narrator at midnight. The track is flanked by 'Come Back' and 'Unchained Melody', an instrumental jumper and a waltzing paean for Melvin's love, respectively.

Taking a lead from Them's 1965 hit 'Gloria', The Belles rework the format to sing about a guy they like. "M-E-L-V-I-I-I... M-E-L-V-I-N, Meeeeelllvviinn" the chorus kind of goes, backing track set to a lackadaisical, classic, jangling, looped rock 'n' roll stomp. Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

Review: Peru has enjoyed a thriving and exciting music scene since the mid-1960s. Bands such as Los Saicos, Los Shain's, and Los York's, to name just a few, released a number of brilliant records that drove young fans crazy and set an example for many to follow. The end of the decade brought about an evolution in sound and new music, as Peruvian bands kept an eye on the groundbreaking British and US artists. One of them was Traffic Sound, founded in Lima in 1967. Over a very short period of time the band managed to successfully develop their career, and by 1971 their Latin influences had overpowered the psychedelic prog vibe of their previous records. The song became a local hit and several versions were recorded by different Peruvian artists. On the other side of this single we find Black Sugar, a Peruvian band considered to be a pioneer group in Latin America in mixing funk influences with rock and Latin rhythms. In 1976, following their gig at Coliseo Amauta in Lima, opening the night for the legendary Spanish band Barrabas, they started to show a growing interest in disco music, resulting in some line-up changes with members leaving the project due to their lack of interest in the new sound and new ones joining in. Their own take on 'La Camita' was released in 1978, and adds a modern twist to the original song.

Review: Ghost Box founder Jim Jupp returns with a new album from his flagship project, Belbury Poly, and this time around he's doing things a bit differently. Compared to the usual winsome minimal synth soliloquies, he's recruited a full band to round out his sound on The Path. As a result, this isn't like any other Belbury Poly record to date, even if past collaborator Christopher Budd returns on bass and guitar. Elsewhere, Midlake's Jesse Chandler lends some flute, clarinet and key tones, Max Saidi holds down the drums and Justin Hopper offers his narration to the record. Striking on a slinky, library-meets-lounge style without losing that hauntological charm, it's a bold new direction for Belbury Poly.

Review: While Jim Jupp's work as the Belbury Poly has always touched on pagan imagery, clandestine atmospherics and vintage electronics - with a dash of pastoral instrumentation thrown in from time to time - it's fair to say that he's never released an album quite like The Path, his seventh full-length excursion. Recorded with the help of a band of musicians - bass, guitar, flute, clarinet and piano all feature alongside his familiar analogue and modular synth sounds - and a narrator (poet and spoken word artist Justin Hopper), the album manages to be atmospheric and alluring whilst also being loose and groovy - all re-imagined folk-rock, eyes-closed psychedelia, breezy jazz and library music chic. It will surprise some fans, for sure, but it's a genuinely fantastic album and a huge step forward from a producer who's not content to just plough the same musical furrow.

Review: Vapor is the fifth album from Sao Paulo Afro-Brazilian heavyweights Bixiga 70, breaking a four-year hiatus to bring you sizzling grooves played with an intensity which is all their own. There's a streak of 70s psych running through these full-bodied jams which splices with the rolling Afrobeat grooves and the piquant brass section - the results are as explosive as you would expect. It's worth noting the changes within the band and in the world around them since they last laid down recordings, so you can consider Vapour a re-birth of sorts for this nine-strong powerhouse.

Review: Hailing from Kingston-Upon-Hull, The Black Delta Movement could be the most inspired psychedelic heavy blues rock band we've encountered for some time in the UK. This time recruiting celebrated guitar slinger Barrie Cadogan, also known as the frontman in Little Barrie, he joins familiar faces in bassist Lewis Wharton and Tony Coote on drums, with legendary producer Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics) also stepping up. Review: Black Rainbows are the quintessential stoner band - they might hail from Italy, but they sound every inch like they hailed from the same arid desertscape as Kyuss and Fu Manchu. Superskull is their eighth studio album, and they sound tighter than ever before shelling down on tracks like 'Superhero Dopeproof'. The riffs are mountainous and the vocals beamed in from space, but above all else the song hit with urgency. Review: There are moments in the spellbinding and often criminally overlooked Blue Cheer anthem, 'Summertime Blues', when it feels like we've descended into the depths of industrial guitar chaos. A cacophony of feedback, growls, and low, rumbling refrains. A pithy reinterpretation of Eddie Cochran's 1958 hit single, here rendered obtuse for the second, decidedly less-radio and commercial-friendly rock 'n' roll generation.
The whole version plays out in a way that's much like we can imagine Jimi Hendrix might have made happen. Grizzled, gritty, fraught and, ultimately, very loud indeed. It's a standout on this triple-A-side of 1967 Blue Cheer demos, three tracks committed to the pantheons when the psychedelic blues and acid rockers were first beginning to focus their energies. But while the aforementioned is the main event, everything here shows why there was so much excitement around them in the first place.

Review: Lo Borges arrived in 1972 as the debut solo album for Brazilian songwriter Lo Borges. He was recording Clube da Esquina with the legendary Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes in the same year and there are plenty of shades of that alaric here. It's a record with lush texture and lots of superbly intricate guitar playing that brings the heat and transports you to a scorched earth world in South America. The vocal arrangements are lush, too, with lots of confounding instrumentals and clever progressions that you will enjoy trying to unpick. Add in melodic brass and jazzy organs and you have a real pearler.

Review: The first of three albums from the Japanese post-everything auteurs titled Heavy Rocks, arrived in 2002 with the second and third installments coming in 2011 and 2022, respectively. These volumes served to allow the group to fully explore their heaviest tendencies with full abandon, and none are as adored or praised (or essential to own on vinyl) than the minimal orange adorned first entry. Plumbing the depths of psychedelic stoner rock, heaving sludge and cavernous doom metal, all whilst retaining accessible grooves and absurdly catchy riffage, this is Boris at their most abrasive, face-melting and imposing, while also serving as a solid entry point into their beastly 20+ album discography.

Review: The first instalment of the three-album cycle from Japanese post-everything auteurs Boris, titled Heavy Rocks, originally landed in 2002 with the second and third volumes arriving in 2011 and 2022, respectively. These projects offered the subversive trio a chance to fully explore and expand their heftiest tendencies with total sonic abandon, with none being more adored or praised (or vital to collect on vinyl) than the minimal orange adorned first entry. Plumbing the depths of psych stoner-doom with forays into heaving sludge metal, all whilst retaining catchy grooves and absurd riffage, this is Boris at their most abrasive, face-melting and imposing, while also serving as a solid entry point into their beastly 20+ album discography. This pressing also comes on orange vinyl for the extra aesthetic-bothered collectors.

Review: After years spent delivering heady fusions of deep funk and Afro-funk on Daptone Records, The Budos Band resurface on Diamond West, an imprint founded by two of the band's key members earlier this year. Their first missive on the California-based imprint is as rousing and fiery as ever, with their usual riotous and heavyweight sound being subtly expanded via nods towards psych-funk, Mariachi Band music and the funk-rock sound made famous by Sly and the Family Stone. The six scorching instrumentals on show are all superb, with our current favourites including the punchy 'The Devil Doesn't Care', the trippy solo-laden explosion that is 'KRITIN' and the deliciously psychedelic and suspenseful 'Curled Steel'.
