A Million Miles Away (4:40)
Review: You can trace the roots of Fu Manchu back to the disaffected wastelands of mid-1980s US suburbia. Specifically Palm Desert, California - at the time, a quite unlikely focal point of a loose 'scene' defined by interferential rock & roll, drawing lines between early grunge, psyche, punk, metal and blues, the movement gave us Masters of Reality, Sleep, and, of course, Queens of the Stone Age. Stoner-leaning Fu Manchu were very much at the centre of that, and are now ready to celebrate 30 years since they emerged from the dry heat and bong water of the period, they've been putting out episodic 10" vinyls on limited pressings to mark the occasion. Musically, this is familiar territory, as hard and gnarly as it is exploratory, funky and infectious, which can only be a good thing when you're celebrating a big one.

Review: The Mdou Moctar mixtape series started in 2021. It is music made from sounds captured in the back of a van while on tour including field recordings, cell phone voice memos, interview clips, conversations and more. The Niger EPs now continue on that theme and look closely at the roots of the band, which lay in long bus rides across West Africa sitting next to people and talking about music. As such the music here is solely from recordings in Mdou Moctar's home country of Niger between 2017 and 2020 when the band was at weddings, picnics, rehearsals, and impromptu house concerts.

Review: Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg, Niger musician best known for his personal sound; he calls it Tuareg guitar music, drawing on styles like takamba and assouf. His music was originally circulated not via the internet, but rather an informal trade network of memory sticks and mobile phones in the Sahel region of North Africa. This musical scarcity captured the imagination of the net-based musical audience at large, following Moctar's formation of a four-piece band and emergent touring schedule aided by motorcycle, not to mention his demo music being leaked on a compilation documenting the cellphone based music of the Sahel in the early 2010s. 'Niger EP. Vol. 2' tops up the artist's latest EP series, laying down a further four entrancingly electric songs recorded at various weddings, picnics and house concerts.

Over Under Sideways Down (2:23)
Jeff's Boogie (2:26)
Review: English blues rock group the Yardbirds released many a blues rock and psychedelic rock leg-swayer, and 'Over Under Sideways Down' from 1966 is a particular entry of note. Its songwriting is credited equally to all members of the group and it was a notable inclusion on the ensuing self-titled album. Inspired by the world famous rock 'n' roll anthem by Bill Haley and His Comets 'Rock Around The Clock', the guitar riff backboning this single could be considered the spark that lit the match of Jeff Beck's solo career, having later been described as a "flash of lightning" by bandmate Jim McCarty. It also went on to justify an early precursor to the instrumental B-side, 'Jeff's Boogie'.

Maybe Make It Right (3:50)
Review: To coincide with the Brian Jonestown Massacre's North American & Australasian tour in 2023 is the release of two new exclusive tracks by the band. Recorded in Berlin and remotely in 2023, opening track 'Abandon Ship (Martian Meltdown Mix)' runs at over 11 minutes and plays at 33 rpm. 'Maybe Make It Right', the B-side, is nearly four minutes long & plays at 45. With Anton Newcombe, Hakon Adalsteinsson, and Uri Rennert all playing on this offering, we're more than delighted to welcome the return of the Massacre, this time in incendiary live A-and-B form. The release comes in a heavyweight PVC bag with the artwork doubling up as a J-card, making the vinyl visible.

Review: Count Five were a short lived gem of the Californian psych scene in the late 60s who brushed with fame when their single 'Psychotic Reaction' hit the top five in the US charts in 1966. They may have disbanded by 1969, but their brief moment in the spotlight left a lasting impression which was cemented by their inclusion on the iconic Nuggets compilation series. This reissue on Disc'Az faithfully reproduces the original release that launched them to prominence, featuring the squalling garage rock of 'Psychotic Reaction' alongside a further three cuts that will take you right back to this golden era of breakaway pop.

It's So Hard To Be Happy (2:19)
Review: The Guy Hamper Trio is actually a quartet, formed by Billy Childish on guitar and vocals, Juju Hamper on bass, Wolf Howard on drums and James Taylor on Hammond organ. Together, on 'Cowboys Are Square', the Trio provide a bottom end, Blues-influenced instrumental mayhem for those unafraid of dirt, germs and true grime. With no particular wish other than to be recognised as the best at playing badly, they refuse to obey the usual rules of combat and music. Also subverting the old tradition of releasing blues and punk jazz on acetate, this 7" now barges its way to our cochlears via Spinout Nuggets. Maximal, raucous, gyratory.

Sigmund Jahn Bossa (2:52)
Aquaria (2:27)
Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

Beggin' (instrumental) (3:10)
Review: San Francisco Bay Area soul band Monophonics's 'Beggin' is their own fine cover version of a song originally released by Franki Valli & The Four Seasons. It has been covered and sampled by a number of other acts who have done a fine job of popularising it, but this version by this large and often rotating cast of musicians is one that truly brings something different. It has a retro 60s soul sound in the gauzy guitars, while the rolling drums hit hard with extra texture from further psyched-out guitar lines. An instrumental is included for those who prefer a more direct approach.

Review: Few conversations or analyses surrounding doom metal can begin without mentioning the integral Sleep and their genre-defining opus Dopesmoker. That same analytical discussion cannot be rounded up without OM coming into the fray, as the duo of bassist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Haikus originally worked together as Sleep's rhythm section. The hypnotic 'Gebel Barkal' single would serve as the final recording from the pair following the 2007 full-length Pilgrimage, before 2009's God Is Good would welcome the arrival of current drummer Emil Amos and signal the group's continued expansion into an eventual three-piece.

This is the second 7" in My Only Desire Records' Brit Jazz 45s series, which sees some of their favourite contemporary jazz acts each making brand new studio recordings of two classic compositions from the golden era of 60s and 70s British jazz.

Traffic Sound - "La Camita" (2:48)
Black Sugar - "La Camita 78" (4:27)
Review: Peru has enjoyed a thriving and exciting music scene since the mid-1960s. Bands such as Los Saicos, Los Shain's, and Los York's, to name just a few, released a number of brilliant records that drove young fans crazy and set an example for many to follow. The end of the decade brought about an evolution in sound and new music, as Peruvian bands kept an eye on the groundbreaking British and US artists. One of them was Traffic Sound, founded in Lima in 1967. Over a very short period of time the band managed to successfully develop their career, and by 1971 their Latin influences had overpowered the psychedelic prog vibe of their previous records. The song became a local hit and several versions were recorded by different Peruvian artists. On the other side of this single we find Black Sugar, a Peruvian band considered to be a pioneer group in Latin America in mixing funk influences with rock and Latin rhythms. In 1976, following their gig at Coliseo Amauta in Lima, opening the night for the legendary Spanish band Barrabas, they started to show a growing interest in disco music, resulting in some line-up changes with members leaving the project due to their lack of interest in the new sound and new ones joining in. Their own take on 'La Camita' was released in 1978, and adds a modern twist to the original song.

Traffic Sound - "Meshkalina" (5:29)
Review: This a unique release that features a song that was released by two different bands during within the same year. The song 'Meshkalina' was by a psychedelic and prog band from Peru called Traffic Sound and then, soon after, by Latin duo Paco Zambrano and Reynaldo Murrieta under the name Paco Zambrano Y Su Combo. The latter version is more traditional and Latin while the Traffic Sound version is more psychedelic garage rock band-like. Two formidable and very different versions featured on limited splattered 7" vinyl.

Uzi Kinrot (3:13)
Sea Gull (4:37)
Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.
