Review: If you've caught either Khruangbin or Leon Bridges live before, or indeed listened to anything by either band or producer-singer-songwriter, you'll know where this 20-minute EP is heading. The sleeve art, which gives more than a nod to the 1960s hippy movement, also offers a major clue.

Tripped out, smoked out, lackadaisical, bliss-infused overtures, honied and syrupy, easing you in so far that you don't quite realise how hard it is to crawl back out of the sugar-coated opiate haze. A collection of heady, hallucinogenic work for 21st Century high plains drifters, it's jazzy, psychy, lush soulful fare you'll be wanting to hear again and again, capturing the heat and slow pace of America's southern states with heartfelt songwriting from genuine masters. The result is something very special indeed.

  1. Fosas Limitadas (3:47)
  2. Lux, Lumina (CC Crain remix) (4:42)
  3. El Olivo (3:59)
  4. Unificado (Pye Corner Audio remix) (7:57)
Review: Beguiling, intriguing, immersive and about as far from obsolete as you could ask for in an age when so much music seems happy to exist in a kind of pointless no man's land lacking anything like innovation, if not defined by total uselessness. Prepare to commend Lorelle, your new favourite psychedelic aural adventure, not to mention the much-loved London label Sonic Cathedral, if you're not already obsessed with it. There's more depth and substance to the four tracks offered here than many artists can manage in an album. '"Fosas Limitadas" has shades of Powell's earthier scuzz, "Lux, Lumina" is straight up hallucinatory fare, or at least CC Crain's remix - included here - fits that description. "El Olivo" is a tripped out odyssey that's at once beautiful and unnerving, while the closer, a Pye Corner Audio version of "Unificado" grows into a subtle but highly emotive wall of atmosphere over eight stunning minutes.

  1. Phantom Band/Linear Johnson & The Protons - "Rush Rush"
  2. Drums Off Chaos - "Drums Off Chaos"
Review: The sadly departed Jaki Liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: When it comes to plugging in mega stacks of amplified prog-rock, Vancouver-area band Black Mountain deliver a retro-futuristic sound that's as large as any Godzilla soundtrack. With Destroyer presenting a fifth LP on Bloomington label Jagjaguwar, Black Mountain go someway in delivering a bold cross reference of only the best and most legendary points of 60s, 70s and 90s rock n roll regalia. With keys and piano mixed with guitars, distortion and vocoders giving the band a futuristic, krautrock (Deutsche elektronik musik) edge, British psychedelic and raw but atmospheric arrangements give the band their own undeniable identity. With songs passing the bottle from slow dancing rock, flashy hair metal, to synthy guitars and cosmic arpeggios, the best metal of today is still way up there, on Black Mountain.

Review: This 1972 classic has been cited as a major influence by the likes of Beck, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and even Kanye West. The fourth album from the group, its release came at a time of growing exposure with lead single, '"Spoon", topping the German Top 10 and selling over 300,000 copies. It was this success that offered the opportunity to record the remainder of the album in their makeshift "Inner Space" home studio, an old former cinema. With bassist Holger Czukay on engineering and producing duties, several daily chess games between vocalist Damo Suzuki and keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, and a frantic recording process, Can delivered their piece de resistance - a dense, sprawling work of wild imagination, where their psychedelic adventuring intersected most perfectly with their pop sensibilities.

Review: Swedish heavy psychedelic rockers Dungen are pretty incredible live on stage. Even if you've never seen them, the contents of this record are enough to assure you of that. There's palpable energy emitting from the speakers, a grungy but cosmic barrage of sounds that grab you almost from the off (aptly-titled opener "Track 1" introduces things via a gentile, bluesy warm up) before we're plunged into Led Zep-esque territories. To make that comparison would likely have the devout on both sides up in arms - it's lazy but nonetheless relevant. What's here is far from your average live-on-record offering; it's a true showcase of their famed and largely improvised shows, and real evidence of what they are capable of bestowing on us to keep if it weren't for the nature of studio albums themselves. A creative tour de force in action, laid down for all time.

Review: It's hard not to see this offering from hallucinogenic and highly visual psych-rockers The Flaming Lips as a "here's what you could have won" release. And that's "here's what you could have won had you been able to attend this performance of one of our most treasured albums in one of the world's most aesthetically astounding venues". FOMO abounds, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a proper bucket list muso haunt, setting gigs halfway up a Colorado mountain. Throw in live orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, and you've got yourself a truly life-affirming evening. Even on record, there's a tangible difference between the sonics here and the original, still it's an incredibly beautiful and grand album. Perhaps most pronounced during the heart-rendering string sweep of opener "Race For The Prize" (expect shivers), tracks such as "A Spoonful Weighs A Ton" and, of course, "Waitin' For A Superman" feel as though they have finally found their home.

Review: It's not everyday you find psyche rock that sounds like it is genuinely going somewhere with purpose. The sense of urgency on tracks like the chugging and propellant 'I'm Not Living In The Past Anymore' jump off the record and grab you by the scruff of the neck, impact slowly increasing as the waves of synth and harmonised vocals build towards ever higher heights. There are certainly plenty of dreamy moments to counterbalance some of that energy - opener 'Schmetterling' feels lighter than air, 'R&B' nods to the ethereality of Spiritualized. But this Austin, Texas outfit seem altogether more rooted in the physical rather than trippy world, with tracks like 'Hell Bastards' belonging to a rawer end of the spectrum, owing as much to early prog prototypes as woozy, hazy, blissed out business.

Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: Inspired by the slightly unlikely collision of the Thai music of the '70s and The Shadows, Khruangbin - the name means 'aeroplane' in Thailand - are purveyors of a deliriously mellow and beguiling form of jammed-out power-trio guitar music - far removed from standard notions of psych and dreampop, partly owing to its pan-global influences, its nonetheless both psychedelic and dreamy, not to mention possessed of an unhurried, reflective and spacious lilt that renders this Texan-London outfit a rare treat in an information-saturated age, taking on delicate soul and funk with exotic atmospheres and making the journey feel both blissful and effortless.

  10. Shida (4:02)

Review: In 2015, Texas & London-based trio Khruangbin's debut album 'The Universe Smiles Upon You' garnered wide critical acclaim and captured attention for its seamless genre-blending and internationally shaped sound - one that evidently has deep roots in Thai-funk cassette culture. Similarly to their debut, sophomore record 'Con Todo El Mundo' is a cocktail of largely instrumental surf-rock, afro-funk, middle-eastern and far-eastern influences, mixed with warmth and soul. As if their pallette wasn't diverse enough, the additions of the pared back boogie on 'Evan Finds The Third Room', the widescreen dream-pop of 'A Hymn' and deeply intricate writing of closer 'Friday Morning', are illustrative of a band who have worked hard to broaden their horizons while keeping their roots in mind and, despite transatlantic bases, clearly remain a stunningly cohesive and well-matched outfit.

Review: It's Gizzard, baby, but not as you've perhaps heard them before. Unless you caught them on stage at one of the shows these live recordings were captured at (namely London, Manchester, Madrid, Utrecht, Milan, Barcelona and Brussels). It's impossible to truly reflect the ferocity and fun of the mighty King in the flesh, but the combination of 'Evil Star''s brooding doom guitars and 'The River''s smooth jazz funk do enough to convey the breadth and scope of what the band are about. The decision to combine multiple concert takes into one (almost) coherent whole makes more sense when you know this LP accompanies a movie of the same name. These are snapshots of life on the road from stage eye view, complete with breakneck heavy metal, stomach-smashing drum solos, and the anthemic pop of 'Let Me Mend The Past'. Concluding with the epic, 20-minute juggernaut of emotion that is 'Brief History of Planet Earth', it's in the exclusive club of live records you need to own.

Review: Ruud Lekx, the Dutch musician behind a string of releases as Rude 66 on Creme Organisation, has opted to ditch aliases for this haunting full-length. It's a well-tempered sonic barrage that pivots between experimental post-rock, cleaner coldwave moments, and industrial noise. The range of sounds, polyrhythmic 808 programming and discordant harmonies Lekx uses is impressive alone, but becomes chillingly arresting when coupled with his wife Shaunna's computerized and pseudo-schizophrenic vocals. This is not one for the faint of heart.
