You May Dream (3:22)
Batman Theme (2:36)
Review: A double bill of Japanese surf rock, direct from Tokyo, with the stars from "Kill Bill" (the 5.6.7.8's) playing Sheena & The Rockets' 1979 hit 'You May Dream', with the 'Batman Theme' on the B-side. The Rockets' track is rendered in new reality, with anhedonic vocals and a rollicking tambourine on every fourth beat lending it a sweet sheen. The dark knight, meanwhile, is lent an instrumental funk tailwind, propelled into crime-fighting mode by bass brasses and a staunchly unswung backbeat.

As Meninas - "Redondo Sambao" (2:24)
Jorginho Telles - "Brasileiro" (3:02)
Review: You always know what you are going to get from Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series and that is pure fire in musical form. This 100th release suggests the label has no intention of slowing down nor is it running low on top source material. This one from As Meninas on the A-side has beautiful female vocal-group arrangements with flutes that soar up top and plenty of ass-shaking samba shuffles down low. It's a tune that oozes soul and charm and was first released back in 1967. It's a super sweet but short song that is backed with 'Brasileiro' on the flip. It's taken from Jorginho Telles' self-titled 1971 album on Copacabana Records and mixes up raw guitar sounds with r&b vibes into something unusual and alluring.

Tema De Batman (3:01)
Tema De Onibus (2:33)
Review: While Celio Balona's lengthy recording career focused on Brazilian popular music style MPB, this once-rare outing now given a long overdue and much welcome release is about as far from what most would consider 'popular' as you might imagine. Not that the sounds don't reflect what was en vogue at the time, but more to point out the fact that chart-friendliness is married to a real sense of surrealism.

As the cover and title might suggest, inspiration is found, to some extent, in the original Batman series, and specifically its instantly recognisable theme tune. Here, that track is ripped apart, its motifs borrowed and repurposed to craft something that's altogether out there and yet strangely familiar. A great example of how to experiment without making us realise there's a daring experiment going on.

Review: Founding Bees members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher recorded the original Sunshine Hit Me on the Isle of Wight in their own home garden studio which they called The Shed. A year after release in 2003 it got recognised with a Mercury Music Prize nomination and spawned some big singles. Now, 20 years on, it arrives once more but in an all-new and dubbed-out fashion. The six cuts include three which have never previously been released in any physical format and bring a fresh dimension to the originals.

Come Back (2:25)
Review: First came the digital exclusive, then the 7" repress. This newly reissued Numero version of The Belles' 'Melvin' is a throwback to the 1966 garage rock riffer by the all-girl group, known for their releases on two released Tiara Records around that time. A monologuing, excitable song, 'Melvin' hears the girls pine after one local stud, Melvin, who visits the narrator at midnight. The track is flanked by 'Come Back' and 'Unchained Melody', an instrumental jumper and a waltzing paean for Melvin's love, respectively.

Come Back (2:26)
Review: Not to be confused with the contemporary songwriter Belles, 1960s Canadian soft rockers The Bells, 1980s British pop rockers The Belle Stars, or the seminal Detroit techno anthem by Jeff Mills, Numero Group invite you to step back in time and experience one of the best under-referenced 'response songs' of all time. Taking a lead from Them's 1965 hit 'Gloria', The Belles rework the format to sing about a guy they like. "M-E-L-V-I-I-I... M-E-L-V-I-N, Meeeeelllvviinn" the chorus kind of goes, backing track set to a lackadaisical, classic, jangling, looped rock 'n' roll stomp. Backed with the B-side, 'Come Back', which sets a lighter but brisker mood with its up tempo vocal quartet, delicate snare rolls and catchy six string chords, this is quite the trip to and through another era.

Top Brass (Bare Essentials mix) (3:41)
Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

HIs 2019 album Gelin Aysem on Arsivplak is a gold standard from the genre and one of its key singles gets serve dup on its own 7" with a special insert. "Creation", originally, is a psychedelic folky number reminiscent of '70s group Family Fodder which Psychemagik dub down into fusionists mix of aqueous and cosmic vibes, with its strains of folk kept intact. Their debut 7" vinyl single features two unreleased tracks, 'Batua' and 'Love Me & Give Up', both of which showcase their eclectic blend of soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae-dub, and library music. Review: Billy Swivs, or William Schalada Jr. as he's also known, has put in plenty of time in groups like The Realistics, The Charade and SWIVS, but now he's breaking out with this delectable slice of overdriven psych-garage rock. Carried on the ever trustworthy Wick Records, this 7" leads in with the organ-charged big beat of 'Time Is Not On My Side', which channels the 60s to perfection. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to tell it's not a curio from six decades prior. 'Baby, I'm Your Clown' is a party starter on the B side which calls to mind 'Louie Louie' and a whole clutch of other mod-championed classics from back in t' day.

Gift Of Life (3:23)
Review: We have always got time for new heat from Big Crown and that's just what we have here from Brainstory. This trio of artists take cues from the label's co-owner Leon Michels and his work interpreting the Wu-Tang but with this own energy. They dropped a first EP back in 2014 and since then have looked to jazz, hip-hop old and new, soul and cinematic opulence for their inspiration. This new 7" comes as the outfit is finishing off its second full length and is a fine taster of what to expect with a show stopping two-sider that will soon find its way into you heart.

Review: Germany's mighty fine Tramp label asks you to enjoy some Sax on The Rocks here courtesy of mod-soul monster Gus Brendel. This classic of the genre has never been available on 45rpm before now and is sure to fly off the shelves as a result. It's a sax laced - obviously - seducer with a funky rhythm and steaming hot organ chords doing a busy dance. If you flip it over, you'll find a real ass-wiggler in the form of 'Arabian Nights' which was actually recorded a couple of years before the title track on the A-side. Review: To coincide with the Brian Jonestown Massacre's North American & Australasian tour in 2023 is the release of two new exclusive tracks by the band. Recorded in Berlin and remotely in 2023, opening track 'Abandon Ship (Martian Meltdown Mix)' runs at over 11 minutes and plays at 33 rpm. 'Maybe Make It Right', the B-side, is nearly four minutes long & plays at 45. Where Do We Go From Here? (4:06)
Review: The 60s Liverpudlian rock quartet are famed for their song '6 Day War', which has been sampled from the likes of DJ Shadow in Tokyo Drift and Pusha T on his album released earlier this year. This track is undoubtedly a classic, written in the aftermath of the ongoing Arab-Israeli war of 1967, '6 Day War' is one of the best anti-war tracks of all time. The slow jam-rock ballad comes from the band's album 'Oh What a Lovely War!' released in 1973 which has not been released in Britain until now, making this a landmark pressing. The record is a psychedelic soft-progressive rock LP with emphasis on heavy guitars like in 'Lay it Down' and even pulls from folk rock in 'Dirty Delilha Blues'. Colonel Bagshot were almost criminally overlooked, though their music seems to consistently stand the test of time and it's easy to hear why. The sound is quintessential Liverpool rock, even down to the naming conventions being evocative of The Beatles.

It is the first taster single from their upcoming album 'Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees', while the flip side cut 'Where Do We Go From Here?' is exclusive to this limited and numbered white 10". Band members Anton Newcombe, Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt on keys, Hakon Adalsteinsson on guitar and Hallberg Dadi Hallbergsson and Uri Rennert all contribute to this single, which comes 30 years since the release of their first. Review: The Budos band might sound like they were from the '70s and hailed from Nigeria, but they're actually live and kicking these days around the Greater New York area. The majority of their music has come out thanks to Gabriel Roth's sublime Daptone Records, which also seen a vast number of incredible reissues land on its catalogue. "Maelstrom" is the lead tune on this fine 7", an instantly seductive psych track who electric guitar will have you shivering from head to toes from the very first verse - a total killer of a tune! "Avalanche", on the flip, isn't as visionary or grandiose in sound, but it is still perfectly capable of making you shed a tear thanks to its driving horns and hazy flutters of FX-laden guitar flying around like UFOs. Warmly tipped.

They have dropped a couple of tasty albums since 2020 and now contain with their explorations and fusions of the worlds of jazz, rock, folk, world and country with hints of kraut on the new 7" for Funk Night. Review: Return to Disorder is the new label from Hamburg producer and DJ Helena Hauff, known for her dark brand of EBM and electro-infused music and without doubt one of the best selectors currently playing in clubs. The act responsible for the debut release from Return to Disorder is Children Of Leir, a Leicester-based psych rock outfit whose influences come from "mystical horror". Not the sort of music one would immediately associate with Hauff's floor pummelling DJ sets and a hint that Return To Disorder will be dictated by Hauff's tastes as opposed to a need to satisfy the beat. The four tracks present here are a fine introduction to Children of Leir, with their feedback-laden sound perfectly enhanced by the mastering skills of Pete 'Sonic Boom' Kember.

Review: A five-track EP of rarities by Alex Chilton, the American singer and songwriter best known as the lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star, but whose later efforts led to an extended ambassadorship of the US avant-garde underground. The bulk of the tracks on ‘My Rival’ originate from Chilton’s earliest days, circa. 1975; at this critical juncture, Big Star was no more, and Chilton was teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Saved by his former bandmate, but still confidant, Chris Bell, they soon found themselves re-roused by the power of music, holing up together in Chilton’s bedroom and recording this short but wild set of bluesy experiments. Easily mistaken as the early murmurations of a Big Star reunion, this project should be taken as an eccentricity unto its own, and wholly deserves its 12” debut after an initial RSD run.

Opener 'Viemos De Longe' is a dense and busy mix of warped synth wobbles and steamy jungle effects, humid pads and mystic melodies that take you deep into overgrown flora where all manner of birds and frogs await with their weird and wonderful calls. Nev Cottee's 2013 debut for the label, the sublime "Oslo", was particularly special. It's great to see him return to the fold, two years on, with the similarly superb "If I Could Tell You" - a weary but heartfelt and picturesque chunk of hazy West Coast folk-rock goodness smothered in evocative strings and psychedelic guitar solos. Review: Emotional Rescue is proud to reissue one of Germany's best - if most underrated - bands.
As the Krautrock explosion of the 1970s came to an end, a new collective was formed from the embers of
the 1970's explosion of experimention and openness.
With an ideal that all members had equal rights to composition and decision making,
Dunkelziffer was formed out of the original sessions that created the classic Phantom Band.
Centred around Dominik Von Senger, Reiner Linke and Helmut Zerlett, the flating line up also
included contributions from Can's Damo Suzuki and Jaki Liebetzeit, as well as The Unknown Cases'
Stefan Kratchen and Reebop Kwaku Baah.
This true "supergroup", over a 6 year period, made 4 ground breaking albums that covered the classic
Krautrock triumphrat of heavy, repetitive drumming, intricate, overlapping melody and sonic intonation,
but added in to the melting pot heavy dub, soul and jazz elements to expand the sound in to the new
decade.
A secret for the likes of DJ / Collectors such as Phil South (Golf Channel / No Ordinary Monkey) and Tako
(Redlight Records / Music From Memory) this timely reissue is as always fully licensed and remastered.
Split across 3 separate 12"s to fully cover the highlights and varied styles of their career, this limited

Review: No one knows much about the history of The Engineers, but they were a curio of psych rock from Iran in the late 60s or early 70s. The band members are credited as Abbas Miraftab and Reza Agah, and they have a sound which is raw and dynamic, capturing everything exciting about that golden era for fuzzy, overdriven rock with a liberal dose of funk in its bones. This reissue of their insanely rare single is coming on Juzz Records, a label from Tehran which has been set up to carry this incredible artefact.

Review: This desirable 7" record by Fabio, originally released in 1968 and reissued in 2024, is a true gem of psychedelic rock. With its raw, garage-infused sound, the record transports listeners to the vibrant counterculture era. The title track, 'LSD Lindo Sonho Delirante,' embodies the album's trippy, dreamy atmosphere. Its distorted guitars and hypnotic rhythms create a swirling soundscape that evokes the surreal experiences of psychedelic rock.. 'O Reloginho' offers a more upbeat contrast with its catchy melody and playful lyrics. Fabio's unique blend of psychedelic rock and garage aesthetics makes this album an essential addition to any collector's library. Its rarity and sonic charm will undoubtedly appeal to enthusiasts of the genre.

Review: The Fabulous Courettes' 'Shake!' unleashes a whirlwind of retro-inspired rock 'n' roll energy in a compact package. This Danish-Brazilian duo ignites the airwaves with their electrifying blend of garage rock and 1960s girl-group aesthetics. 'Shake!' is a sonic explosion of fuzzy guitar riffs, infectious drumbeats and irresistible vocal harmonies that compel listeners to move. With its raw, unbridled energy and infectious hooks, this track embodies the essence of rebellion and liberation and makes for a sonic adrenaline rush that transports listeners to the heyday of rock 'n' roll, leaving them craving more of its infectious charm.

Review: Garage rock band The Courettes are of Danish and Brazilian make-up and are based in Denmark. They head to Japan in October, the same month this special 7" drops with 'Daydream' on one side and a special Japanese version of their 'Track 2' on the other side which has been re-sung in Japanese. The original in the A-side is a classic garage-rock sound with big guitar licks and sleazy textures beneath the yearning vocals. This is a mini bit of history that fans will well want to sweep up.

Review: Hailing from one of Europe's undisputed capitals of cool - Denmark, albeit Aalborg rather than Copenhagen - The Fabulous Courettes, aka The Courettes, are nothing if not nostalgia driven. No criticism or attempt to label them old hack, as this two track outing proves, their music feels specially made for turntable listening, summoning the spirit of classic US garage rock & roll with just a hint of psyche and 1960s about them.

Perhaps what's most remarkable is the ensemble sound they manage to create with just the two members. This is loud and decidedly epic stuff that goes straight for the heart like the movie soundtrack you've always wanted to hear but never found. Lost in space somewhere between The Ronettes, The Ramones and The Milkshakes, its technicolour guitar goodness for the ears.

Review: The Flaming Lips' The John Peel Session of October 17, 1996, marked a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the Flaming Lips. Just before their rise to international prominence, the session captured their essence through four tracks that showcased their eclectic blend of neo-psychedelia, experimental rock, and indie influences. Peel, renowned for his astute ear for new talent, played a crucial role in introducing the band's unique sound to a broader audience. The session serves as an audio bookmark to their innovative approach and the impact of Peel's support in propelling them towards global recognition.

Review: Ximeno Records are among the cream of international rarities reissuers, moving at a steady pace to reproduce a large catalogue of old psych rock, funk, and disco oddities on 7" vinyl. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. The B-side hears American greats Robert Holzer and Pure Love (William Kamarra) lay down mega-energetic love-kindling on the semi-eponymous track 'Pure Love'.

Review: You can trace the roots of Fu Manchu back to the disaffected wastelands of mid-1980s US suburbia. Specifically Palm Desert, California - at the time, a quite unlikely focal point of a loose 'scene' defined by interferential rock & roll, drawing lines between early grunge, psyche, punk, metal and blues, the movement gave us Masters of Reality, Sleep, and, of course, Queens of the Stone Age. Stoner-leaning Fu Manchu were very much at the centre of that, and are now ready to celebrate 30 years since they emerged from the dry heat and bong water of the period, they've been putting out episodic 10" vinyls on limited pressings to mark the occasion. Musically, this is familiar territory, as hard and gnarly as it is exploratory, funky and infectious, which can only be a good thing when you're celebrating a big one.

Nova (Tiago remix) (5:13)
Review: Phil South's Golf Channel has developed a fine relationship with Portuguese band Gala Drop over the years with the 2014 LP II the highlight of this union. Before the year is out, band and label reunite for Nova, a killer 12" which sees the band reworked by some of their talented compatriots. First up are Niagara, delivering their first ever remix after a year in which they've excelled on records for Principe, FTD, and their own Ascender label. In the trio's hands, "Nova" is granted the big band disco treatment, Lisbon-style, and it's nice to see how different their vibe is to the subsequent remix from Tiago. The Lux legend veers off into soulful broken beat house territory, channelling the vibes of old Bugz in the Attic and Kaidi Tatham material and we're loving it!

Review: Swedish theatrical death-rock icons in the making, Ghost, dropped one of the most ludicrously entertaining metal releases of 2022 with, 'Impera'. Now, while initially released in 2019, Tobias Forge (Papa Nihil during this incarnation) and his horde of nameless ghouls, have opted to re-distribute their excellent (and brilliantly titled), 'Seven Inches of Satanic Panic', EP. Credited as "two special tracks from the 1969 archives", even though the group formed in 2006; both the anthemic crunch of, 'Kiss the Go-Goat', and fan favourite, 'Mary On A Cross', have become essential staples of the Ghost banner, while the project served as a much-needed building block and source of replenishment following 2018's Prequelle.

Review: Seth Applebaum's NTC outfit Ghost Walk Orchestra originally released 'Brownout' on the Night Walker tape in 2016, distilling their hazy, psych-leaning funk sound into a perfect two-minute groove that shows off the band at their best. Now Karma Chief have pulled the track out of cassette obscurity and given it a pressing as a 7", backed up by 'Boneyard Baile' released the same year as a digi-only drop. If you love a moody funk jam played with finesse by a crack team, this record is a must.

Review: Karma Chief takes strict instructions from Ghost Funk Orchestra here to 'Walk Like A Motherfucker'. It is a single taken originally from their 2019 album A Song For Paul which was written, arranged, and performed by Seth Applebaum with plenty of sidemen on cello, violin, trombone and trumpet all making it a fulsome and raw funk sound. The vocals are coated in sleazy reverb to add some menace to the sensuality of the tones and on the flip is 'Issac Hayes', another reverb heavy funk chaser.

Isaac Hayes (2:46)
Review: Ghost Funk Orchestra are a mystery. Plain and simple. Dirty, soulful production, verbed and fuzzed out guitars, mysterious vocals that feel like a lost score to a Quentin Tarantino film. Here Karma Chief do thorough justice to this elusive troupe's efforts, bringing together two excellent psych-funk encounters, 'Walk Like A Motherfucker' and 'Isaac Hayes'. The A is an incredible take on, well, "ghost funk", evoking a kind of Creedence-via-Khruangbin wash, in which we can only vaguely register the lyrics as a kind of subliminal, unconscious message (they really are that drowned in echo). The B is even more dreamlike, blurring various boundaries between hallmarks of 60s exploitation film music, modern dream pop and what can only be described as math funk.

Overpass (2:56)
Review: If you've ever been to the Calder Valley, in West Yorkshire, then The Goa Express won't exactly come as a big surprise. The band name of course references India's site of hallucinatory pilgrimage, while the landscape these youngsters hail from is home to towns such as Todmorden, where legend has it more people claim to spot UFOs each year than anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

In many ways the two tracks on this release are far less out there than all that may suggest, but there's a definitely psyche edge to the jangly garage rock on offer here. For some at first glance 'Second Time' shares more in common with bands of the Britpop era, but once you're deep into 'Overpass' the glassy-eyedness of it all becomes incapable, instrumentation rising to intense levels in a full on cacophonous freak out.

Review: Geese tend not to be many twitchers' favourite taxonomic family of bird, but when it comes to music, many of the best artists pay homage. Goose, for example - the Connecticut indie folkers with a penchant for jammy freakouts - have unveiled the Undecided EP, a four-track studio collection of live favorites. The album tends towards the instrumental side of things, with climaxes emerging out of minimal slow jams, culminating in great brown washes of guitar and sumptuous, melodious crooning. Or honking, if you will; emotive and cathartic stuff.
