As Meninas - "Redondo Sambao" (2:24)
Jorginho Telles - "Brasileiro" (3:02)
Review: You always know what you are going to get from Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series and that is pure fire in musical form. This 100th release suggests the label has no intention of slowing down nor is it running low on top source material. This one from As Meninas on the A-side has beautiful female vocal-group arrangements with flutes that soar up top and plenty of ass-shaking samba shuffles down low. It's a tune that oozes soul and charm and was first released back in 1967. It's a super sweet but short song that is backed with 'Brasileiro' on the flip. It's taken from Jorginho Telles' self-titled 1971 album on Copacabana Records and mixes up raw guitar sounds with r&b vibes into something unusual and alluring.

Tema De Batman (3:01)
Tema De Onibus (2:33)
Review: While Celio Balona's lengthy recording career focused on Brazilian popular music style MPB, this once-rare outing now given a long overdue and much welcome release is about as far from what most would consider 'popular' as you might imagine. Not that the sounds don't reflect what was en vogue at the time, but more to point out the fact that chart-friendliness is married to a real sense of surrealism.

As the cover and title might suggest, inspiration is found, to some extent, in the original Batman series, and specifically its instantly recognisable theme tune. Here, that track is ripped apart, its motifs borrowed and repurposed to craft something that's altogether out there and yet strangely familiar. A great example of how to experiment without making us realise there's a daring experiment going on.

Come Back (2:26)
Review: Not to be confused with the contemporary songwriter Belles, 1960s Canadian soft rockers The Bells, 1980s British pop rockers The Belle Stars, or the seminal Detroit techno anthem by Jeff Mills, Numero Group invite you to step back in time and experience one of the best under-referenced 'response songs' of all time. Taking a lead from Them's 1965 hit 'Gloria', The Belles rework the format to sing about a guy they like. "M-E-L-V-I-I-I... M-E-L-V-I-N, Meeeeelllvviinn" the chorus kind of goes, backing track set to a lackadaisical, classic, jangling, looped rock 'n' roll stomp. Backed with the B-side, 'Come Back', which sets a lighter but brisker mood with its up tempo vocal quartet, delicate snare rolls and catchy six string chords, this is quite the trip to and through another era.

Top Brass (Bare Essentials mix) (3:41)
Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

Review: Turkey has always had a fascinating funk scene and Beybonlar has been at the heart of its contemoorary scene. HIs 2019 album Gelin Aysem on Arsivplak is a gold standard from the genre and one of its key singles gets serve dup on its own 7" with a special insert. The title track 'Gelin Aysem' opens up with psyched out guitars, plenty of lo-fi drums and wailing Turkish vocals that bring the exotic flavours. On the flip, 'Nenni' is a little harder and darker in its mood and groove.

Review: Ahead of Erol Alkan and Richard Norris' debut album as the urban-slanging Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, Phantasy Sound have commissioned remixes two album tracks. "Creation", originally, is a psychedelic folky number reminiscent of '70s group Family Fodder which Psychemagik dub down into fusionists mix of aqueous and cosmic vibes, with its strains of folk kept intact. Meanwhile menacing tones come from London psych group Teeth Of The Sea who turn "Delicious Light" into something you'd imagine hearing on Blackest Ever Black.

Review: For seven years, Matasuna Records has been dedicated to uncovering musical gems from the past. Now, they introduce a thrilling contemporary find: Barcelona-based band Bidaide. Their debut 7" vinyl single features two unreleased tracks, 'Batua' and 'Love Me & Give Up', both of which showcase their eclectic blend of soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae-dub, and library music. 'Batua' on the A-side delivers an energetic fusion of funky rhythms, agile guitar dialogues, and vibrant brass overlays. On the B-side, 'Love Me & Give Up' offers a soulful, relaxed vibe with Motown-esque charm. Bidaide's evolution from a duo to a vibrant band culminates in this dynamic release.

Baby I'm Your Clown (2:37)
Review: Billy Swivs, or William Schalada Jr. as he's also known, has put in plenty of time in groups like The Realistics, The Charade and SWIVS, but now he's breaking out with this delectable slice of overdriven psych-garage rock. Carried on the ever trustworthy Wick Records, this 7" leads in with the organ-charged big beat of 'Time Is Not On My Side', which channels the 60s to perfection. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to tell it's not a curio from six decades prior. 'Baby, I'm Your Clown' is a party starter on the B side which calls to mind 'Louie Louie' and a whole clutch of other mod-championed classics from back in t' day.

Gift Of Life (3:23)
Review: We have always got time for new heat from Big Crown and that's just what we have here from Brainstory. This trio of artists take cues from the label's co-owner Leon Michels and his work interpreting the Wu-Tang but with this own energy. They dropped a first EP back in 2014 and since then have looked to jazz, hip-hop old and new, soul and cinematic opulence for their inspiration. This new 7" comes as the outfit is finishing off its second full length and is a fine taster of what to expect with a show stopping two-sider that will soon find its way into you heart.

Review: Germany's mighty fine Tramp label asks you to enjoy some Sax on The Rocks here courtesy of mod-soul monster Gus Brendel. This classic of the genre has never been available on 45rpm before now and is sure to fly off the shelves as a result. It's a sax laced - obviously - seducer with a funky rhythm and steaming hot organ chords doing a busy dance. If you flip it over, you'll find a real ass-wiggler in the form of 'Arabian Nights' which was actually recorded a couple of years before the title track on the A-side. It's another steamy dance floor gem.

Where Do We Go From Here? (4:06)
Review: The 60s Liverpudlian rock quartet are famed for their song '6 Day War', which has been sampled from the likes of DJ Shadow in Tokyo Drift and Pusha T on his album released earlier this year. This track is undoubtedly a classic, written in the aftermath of the ongoing Arab-Israeli war of 1967, '6 Day War' is one of the best anti-war tracks of all time. The slow jam-rock ballad comes from the band's album 'Oh What a Lovely War!' released in 1973 which has not been released in Britain until now, making this a landmark pressing. The record is a psychedelic soft-progressive rock LP with emphasis on heavy guitars like in 'Lay it Down' and even pulls from folk rock in 'Dirty Delilha Blues'. Colonel Bagshot were almost criminally overlooked, though their music seems to consistently stand the test of time and it's easy to hear why. The sound is quintessential Liverpool rock, even down to the naming conventions being evocative of The Beatles.

Review:  The Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded this new single in Berlin, remotely, over 2020 and 2021. It is the first taster single from their upcoming album 'Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees', while the flip side cut 'Where Do We Go From Here?' is exclusive to this limited and numbered white 10". Band members Anton Newcombe, Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt on keys, Hakon Adalsteinsson on guitar and Hallberg Dadi Hallbergsson and Uri Rennert all contribute to this single, which comes 30 years since the release of their first. That was 'She Made Me / Evergreen' black in 1991 and since then the band has only gone on to greater things and bigger acclaim, and rightly so.

Review: The Budos band might sound like they were from the '70s and hailed from Nigeria, but they're actually live and kicking these days around the Greater New York area. The majority of their music has come out thanks to Gabriel Roth's sublime Daptone Records, which also seen a vast number of incredible reissues land on its catalogue. "Maelstrom" is the lead tune on this fine 7", an instantly seductive psych track who electric guitar will have you shivering from head to toes from the very first verse - a total killer of a tune! "Avalanche", on the flip, isn't as visionary or grandiose in sound, but it is still perfectly capable of making you shed a tear thanks to its driving horns and hazy flutters of FX-laden guitar flying around like UFOs. Warmly tipped.

Opener 'Viemos De Longe' is a dense and busy mix of warped synth wobbles and steamy jungle effects, humid pads and mystic melodies that take you deep into overgrown flora where all manner of birds and frogs await with their weird and wonderful calls. Two of the devilishly delightful disco tracks from it now make their way onto this tidy 7" from Groovin, who are following up their much loved rare groove Italo 7" series in style. Review: Hailing from one of Europe's undisputed capitals of cool - Denmark, albeit Aalborg rather than Copenhagen - The Fabulous Courettes, aka The Courettes, are nothing if not nostalgia driven. No criticism or attempt to label them old hack, as this two track outing proves, their music feels specially made for turntable listening, summoning the spirit of classic US garage rock & roll with just a hint of psyche and 1960s about them.

Perhaps what's most remarkable is the ensemble sound they manage to create with just the two members. This is loud and decidedly epic stuff that goes straight for the heart like the movie soundtrack you've always wanted to hear but never found. Lost in space somewhere between The Ronettes, The Ramones and The Milkshakes, its technicolour guitar goodness for the ears.

Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. Review: You can trace the roots of Fu Manchu back to the disaffected wastelands of mid-1980s US suburbia. Specifically Palm Desert, California - at the time, a quite unlikely focal point of a loose 'scene' defined by interferential rock & roll, drawing lines between early grunge, psyche, punk, metal and blues, the movement gave us Masters of Reality, Sleep, and, of course, Queens of the Stone Age. Stoner-leaning Fu Manchu were very much at the centre of that, and are now ready to celebrate 30 years since they emerged from the dry heat and bong water of the period, they've been putting out episodic 10" vinyls on limited pressings to mark the occasion. Musically, this is familiar territory, as hard and gnarly as it is exploratory, funky and infectious, which can only be a good thing when you're celebrating a big one.

Review: Phil South's Golf Channel has developed a fine relationship with Portuguese band Gala Drop over the years with the 2014 LP II the highlight of this union. Before the year is out, band and label reunite for Nova, a killer 12" which sees the band reworked by some of their talented compatriots. First up are Niagara, delivering their first ever remix after a year in which they've excelled on records for Principe, FTD, and their own Ascender label. In the trio's hands, "Nova" is granted the big band disco treatment, Lisbon-style, and it's nice to see how different their vibe is to the subsequent remix from Tiago. The Lux legend veers off into soulful broken beat house territory, channelling the vibes of old Bugz in the Attic and Kaidi Tatham material and we're loving it!

It is a single taken originally from their 2019 album A Song For Paul which was written, arranged, and performed by Seth Applebaum with plenty of sidemen on cello, violin, trombone and trumpet all making it a fulsome and raw funk sound. Review: If you've ever been to the Calder Valley, in West Yorkshire, then The Goa Express won't exactly come as a big surprise. The band name of course references India's site of hallucinatory pilgrimage, while the landscape these youngsters hail from is home to towns such as Todmorden, where legend has it more people claim to spot UFOs each year than anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

In many ways the two tracks on this release are far less out there than all that may suggest, but there's a definitely psyche edge to the jangly garage rock on offer here. For some at first glance 'Second Time' shares more in common with bands of the Britpop era, but once you're deep into 'Overpass' the glassy-eyedness of it all becomes incapable, instrumentation rising to intense levels in a full on cacophonous freak out.

With producers Kif-Kif Le Batteur (Here And Now / Planet Gong) and Grant "Showbiz" Cunliffe (Blue Midnight / The Fall), their open-minded techniques allowed Adams to develop his increasing interest in the "studio as instrument" principles he loved from the likes of Brian Eno and Lee Perry.

Model Village (feat Slowthai) (3:57)
Review: RECOMMENDED
'Model Village' is IDLES at their most unapologetic best - giving subtlety a wide berth in favour of an on-the-nose observational diatribe that delivers a knock-out-blow to the Broken Britain we see before us today. Arguably one of their most accessible tracks in terms of musicality, firmly sitting in the rock 'n' roll camp (albeit with flashes of punk-ish fangs), it's also (mostly) radio friendly, and yet utterly unforgiving and uncompromising with its message.

"Got my head kicked in in the village / There's a lot of pink skin in the village / Hardest man in the world in the village / He said he got with every girl in the village" could be the lines that summarise what we're talking about best. Basically a cutting, sardonic, honest and depressingly accurate take on these islands of ruin, racism and exceptionalism. Simply put, we really don't know where we would be without this band.

This is the second new music from them this month and it follows a busy 2022 in which they put out three head-turning 7"s on different labels. They seem to be settling for Funk Night as their home this year but soundwise are harder to pin down - there is Thai funk, space rock, jazz, psyched-out guitars and much more all contained with these two expansive and immersive sounds. 'Paranoia Party' is the really 60s-tinged narcotic opener then 'Delay' brings more rock guitar sounds as if from some secret and tripped-out Stones concert in the desert back in the day.

Medicine Bag (2:22)
Review: Inner Space Quartet had a busy debut year in 2022: they put out three enthralling funk 7"s between the Far and Dime label and now they arrive on Funk Night outta the US of A. 'Holy Water' sure does have a religious feel to it during the break when some hypnotic chants arrive, but the rest of the tune is defined by psyched-out guitar, Thai funk grooves, and star-gazing cosmic feels. It's a lovely cut followed by 'Medicine Bag,' a dumpy and dubby cut with intoxicating eastern melodies and snaking flute leads.

Review: The sounds of Johnny! have played a significant part in the popularity of afro beat over the last fifteen years. Quietly and tastefully, JJ Whitefield has been responsible for releasing a plethora of Ghanaian rock, including the country's most recent sensations, the incredibly talented Ebo Taylor. Since the 90s, this guys hasn't stopped releasing heat for a single minute, and his collaboration with Now Again has been one of the best and most consistent partnerships of the last decade. Along with Ebo Taylor, his on Henry, and percussionist-singer, Eric Owusu, Whitefield's Johnny! can do absolutely now wrong and, if this new single "Ago" is anything to go by, these guys are among the few making quality afro rock in the present day. The tune is rugged, lo-fi and a little hazy, bringing together elements of Zamrock and psych in the best possible way; there's also an instrumental for you on the flip.

Selected Extracts From The Original Soundtrack Of A Degree Of Murder
Track 1 (6:56)
Track 2 (6:22)
Review: A little-known fact related to Brian Jones is that the Rolling Stone and 27 club member once sorted the soundtrack for a cult crime film, 'Degree Of Murder'. The film stars his then-partner Anita Pallenberg in its lead role as Marie, who kills her boyfriend in self-defense. Now some 50-odd years on from its original release, Rhythm And Blues reissue some selected cuts from the soundtrack and press it to hi-def wax, showing off Jones' indelible riffing and shreddage. An innovative rock soundtrack, it features Jones on a virtuosic slew of self-taught instruments: sitar, organ, recorder, guitar, bass, banjo, dulcimer, Mellotron and harmonica. In 2012, his collaborator Jimmy Page said "Jones knew what he was doing... He was moving forward."

Christmas Time Is Here (version Mary) (3:24)
Review: Supremely laid back funksters Khruangbin are having a busy close to the year - not only have they put together a fine entry into the iconic Late Night Tales series, due in December, but now they've served up a sizzling festive 7". 'Christmas Time Is Here' is a serene dn starry eyed as usual from this Texan outfit, with glassy eyed chords and sweet, subtly funky bass. There are vocal coos on the a-side to add depth and warmth, and on the flip a dub is a little more paired back. Both tunes fill you with seasonal cheer and then some.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Please Don't Be There For Me (2:57)
Review: Oddball hauntologists Ghost Box present one of their first band cover versions. First appearing to the label's A&Rs when Large Plants posted the song - a Madonna cover - to social media as an April fool's joke, Ghost Box refused to take it as such, and it is now being released as a 7" single. This is a no-nonsense psych take on the Madonna's classic bit of 80s balearism, except in good Ghost Box fashion, it sounds like it should have preceded the original. Clock the B-side 'Please Don't Be There For Me', a more driving, stimulating original blues bit.

Sea Gull (4:37)
Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.

Los Desposeidos (3:16)
Tu Deseo (3:11)
Review: Bolivian psyche-surf rock, anyone? Welcome to the world of Los Laser, a beguiling yet immediately infectious outfit. Vuelven! first hit in the 1970s, at which point most of our fact-checked knowledge about this release comes to a sudden stop. And all the better for it. Rather than getting bogged down in brief biopics, then, let's just say this is definitely one for the guitar-loving diggers, who won't find it many other places. Sonically speaking there's plenty of reference points to what was happening across South America musically at the time. While steeped in conservative traditions (often due to the enforced religion through colonialism situation), the decades after World War II were fertile ground for anti-establishment youth movements across the world, and this continent was no different. So, while the exotic lyrics and jangling six strings don't scream "smash the system" today, you'd better believe this was well against the grain back in 1971.

Review: The Lovely Eggs are teasing their new album Eggsistentialism which arrives on Egg Records at the end of April with this lovely 7" release, 'Nothing/Everything'. It is the third time they have worked with Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Fridmann and is another masterful mystic and psychedelic sound that shows a new sound f the band. Ban member Holly has said the singles reprint the yin and yang of life in that they capture "hope and despair, patience and frustration, birth and death, the mundane and the extraordinary." It's a great direction that has got us even more ready for the album later in the month.

Review: San Francisco Bay Area soul band Monophonics's 'Beggin' is their own fine cover version of a song originally released by Franki Valli & The Four Seasons. It has been covered and sampled by a number of other acts who have done a fine job of popularising it, but this version by this large and often rotating cast of musicians is one that truly brings something different. It has a retro 60s soul sound in the gauzy guitars, while the rolling drums hit hard with extra texture from further psyched-out guitar lines. An instrumental is included for those who prefer a more direct approach.

Hold On To Your Mind (5:18)
Review: Mr. K (Danny Krivit) transports us to the golden era of David Mancuso 's New York Loft with two disparate but equally heavyweight classics from the Mancuso oeuvre mastered and cut loud, deep, and clear for club play. First up is an edit of a track that embodies the spirit of early '80s downtown NYC. Originally released in 1982, 'Konk Party' was Konk's calling card and first hit and represented their multicultural, no wave, hip-hop/disco hybrid perfectly, the opening sax riff itself a giving sly nod to Wild Sugar's breakbeat classic 'Bring It Here' that the Beastie Boys would later sample. It was considered such a Loft staple that the video was even filmed there, as well as being played widely across the influential clubs of the day. The easy-going groove, heavy percussion and low-slung bass, complimented by bilingual lyrics from Angel QuiNones, still sounds ready for action, especially In this new edit from Mr. K. On the flip, 'Hold On To Your Mind' was first released in 1970 by Northern Irish rock group Andwella, is a heavy, psychedelic tour de force. Mr. K outdoes himself with his new mix, a supercharged blend of extended percussion breaks absent on previous 7-inch mixes, plus driving vocals, and fuzz guitar.

Review: Not to be confused with indie starlets the Mystery Jets, New York five piece The Mystery Lights continue to channel the modern day back into the '70s. This slick 7" sees the Brooklynites in surf mode once again with the uptempo and staccato-driven "Thick Skin", a dancey number with fresh vocals sharing a fresh cadence akin to Ozzy Osbourne circa Black Sabbath's Paranoid album. "In The Darkness" offsets the A-side with an alternative vibe that's lazy, relax and chill, perhaps even drunk. Cocktails or whiskey, you choose.

Review: The Oscillators say they are not a band but instead "an experimental recording collaboration that turned out swimmingly." Back in June they dropped a brilliantly psyched-out soul and funk album that represents their native Seattle scene and was as deep and raw as you can imagine. Now they are back on Tramp with a potent 7" featuring two more super tight cuts. Led by drummer oLLi kLoMp with other members from bands like Rippin' Chicken, the Pulsations, Lucky Brown, the Trueloves and 45th Street Brass, this debut 45rpm features the horn-led heavy funk of 'Cosmonaut' and more percolating and deep cut sounds of 'Off The Clock'.

Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

Review: La Munai Records is an independent record label and shop from Jakarta who bring the sounds of the far East to your decks with this fiery 7" from The Panturas and Sundancer. It is The Panturas who open up with an intension wall of sound made from busy percussion, heavy rock guitars and vicars lyrical deliveries. There is an exotic sense of high speed 60s funk in the grooves, too, that races you along at one hundred miles hour. On the flip is Sundancer's 'Dedare Tanjung' which also has an uptempo sense of funk to it, like it could have been used in the soundtrack to one of Kill Bill's gorier scenes.
