Review: The Advanced Cookbook Of Mr Selig And Kanzler Z was a short-lived experimental jazz act also known as Cookbook. They put out one EP and two albums, with this 12" being taken from the debut. It came in 1989 and German label the Zoo In You initially and has the vocals of Mr Selig on the A-side, and guitar by Wolfgang Bokelmann and words by Dieter Pougin on the flip. An original will cost you more than a night at the pub and even finding samples online can be hard. Rest assured it is future jazz that still sounds futuristic today.

Catching Stars (4:56)
Review: Estonian rock band Centre El Muusa hail from Tallinn and in vitally started out as experimental electronic duo Centre Electronique Muusa before evolving into the current set up in 2018. They have dropped a couple of tasty albums since 2020 and now contain with their explorations and fusions of the worlds of jazz, rock, folk, world and country with hints of kraut on the new 7" for Funk Night. 'Moonlight Horses' is a psyched out world of campfire guitars and star gazing riffs that leaves you feeling fully hippie-d up. 'Catching Stars' then heightens the trip with more angular guitars and a big wall of garage-rock sound.

Medicine Bag (2:22)
Review: Inner Space Quartet had a busy debut year in 2022: they put out three enthralling funk 7"s between the Far and Dime label and now they arrive on Funk Night outta the US of A. 'Holy Water' sure does have a religious feel to it during the break when some hypnotic chants arrive, but the rest of the tune is defined by psyched-out guitar, Thai funk grooves, and star-gazing cosmic feels. It's a lovely cut followed by 'Medicine Bag,' a dumpy and dubby cut with intoxicating eastern melodies and snaking flute leads.

Delay (3:21)
Review: We aren't sure who Inner Space Quartet are be we are sure you will like them. This is the second new music from them this month and it follows a busy 2022 in which they put out three head-turning 7"s on different labels. They seem to be settling for Funk Night as their home this year but soundwise are harder to pin down - there is Thai funk, space rock, jazz, psyched-out guitars and much more all contained with these two expansive and immersive sounds. 'Paranoia Party' is the really 60s-tinged narcotic opener then 'Delay' brings more rock guitar sounds as if from some secret and tripped-out Stones concert in the desert back in the day.

One Piece: We Are (Soundtrack)

We Are! (4:03)
Music (4:01)
Review: 'We Are!' was the very first opening theme for the TV anime version of One Piece, which first aired in 1999. The first analogue version of the 8cm single CD was released in November of that year. Sung by the franchise's in-house singer Hiroshi Kitadani, and bringing along with her a bursting, emphatic, nearing-on-frenzied composition, the theme instantly captures the vibe of One Piece; that of following Monkey D. Luffy and crew on serial whimsical piracies and carefree adventures, set against a more sinister backdrop of tyrannical secret police forces controlled by a World Government, in constant conflict with a Revolutionary Army.

Carousel (4:59)
Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's joint release with Calico Discos was a superb EP back in 2020 and it still bangs today, hence the reissue. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of 'Dallas', the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener 'Cebando' (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of 'Atlantis'.

Review: Finally, this rare live performance from psych-scenesters Soft Machine gets a vinyl master and pressing. Taking place in Paris in October 1967 for Guy Beart's TV show, then in his twilight years, this smashing selection of acid-tinged electropiano monsters hears one musician advocate for a next generation, and a figurative diamond form from the rough sonic carbon that was psych rock at the time. A strange malaise affects the performance; it was broadcast a full 10 months after being recorded, but nonetheless, we're more than thankful it's seen this limited white vinyl, hand-numbered release, which includes exclusive liners and hand-numbered timelines of the band's progression at the time.

Why Are We Sleeping? (3:35)
Joy Of A Toy (2:49)
Review: Pulled from the earliest days of The Soft Machine when they were closer to a psychedelic rock band than a tripped-out jazz concern, Universal Japan have reproduced a very limited single version of 'Why Are We Sleeping?'. The song itself is still a nebulous, twisting and turning freak ride riding on a satisfyingly heavy rhythm section, embellished with organs and following droll poetry to the pure 60s burst of the chorus, as masterful now as it was mind-blowing back in 1968. On the B-side, 'Joy Of A Toy' is a subtly funky affair laced with languid wah wah guitar and artful dynamic shifts from the mellow beginnings to a rollicking beatdown by the crescendo, and all in under three minutes. Collectors will especially enjoy the Japanese artwork on this unique single, but just having these two gems on a handy 7" is worth the price of entry alone.

Black Apple Pink Apple (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (10:09)
Review: The revival of celebrated space rock, kosmiche and downtempo fusionists A Mountain of One continues apace. Having returned to action last year after a decade away with two tidy singles, the London-based combo has served up another sublime single. 'Black Apple Pink Apple' contains plenty of bold, ear-catching piano work, alongside a rolling, dancefloor-ready space rock groove and some suitably hazy, emotive vocals. The obligatory dancefloor translation is provided by the king of wonkiness, Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully strips things back and creates one of his sparse-but-rubbery workouts out of little more than the band's beats, rubbery bassline and snippets of vocal.
