Weezer's last album, OK Human, was a surprisingly sophisticated affair, with luscious orchestration dominating the sound space. They've gone back to basics on Van Weezer, the American alt-rockers 15th album, delivering a set of cheery, guitar heavy pop-rock singalongs laden with the kind of deliciously over-the-top heavy metal riffs more often associated with poodle perm sporting '80s stadium bands. It's not a particularly sophisticated blueprint, but it does guarantee oodles of fun from start to finish. Highlights include 'Hero', 'I Need Some Of That', which boasts some classic eyes-closed guitar solos, and energetic opener 'The End of the Game'. Fans will love it.
