While nowhere near as well known as other Daptone-signed artists (think the late, great Sharon Jones, the Dap Kings and Charles Bradley), the James Hunter Six has long been one of the revivalist soul label's most consistent acts. For proof, check out Whatever It Takes, the outfit's first full-length since 2016's Hold On. Hunter's throaty, blue-eyed soul vocals naturally take centre stage throughout, with the experienced vocalist brilliantly delivering a range of heartfelt lyrics that mostly focus on various aspects of love. The album's success is undoubtedly helped by the authenticity of the backing tracks, which sound like long lost studio recordings from the early 1960s, when soul was yet to fully break away from the dominant rhythm and blues sound. Speaking of which, the album's bluesy moments are amongst the highlights.
