A trilogy some seven years in the making, Otto A Totland delivers the final, third chapter in his series of sparse piano compositions that began with 2014's Pino, and continued through 2017's The Lost. As per those other two parts, this is a spectacular work showcasing a genuine master of the proverbial ivories, in turn rendering the listener speechless once they learn that the man in question never had any formal training on the instrument. A compelling argument for taking kids out of school and setting your own syllabus, if ever there was one. Well, maybe.
The result is something that sounds tangibly personal, unique, and undiluted. Like a mission statement for the artist's life, delivered through beautiful, often reflective and occasionally mournful notes. Just like its predecessors, Companion was recorded at Nils Frahm's studio in Berlin, and again the result is a warm, whole, complete listening experience that sounds as though you're in the room with the musician himself.
