A contemporary of Hugh Masekela, whom he played with in the Jazz Epistles, Kippie Moketsi was a South African saxophonist whose solo career briefly burned brightly in the late 1970s. The most notable items in his all-too-slender discography are two albums for acclaimed South African jazz imprint The Sun, of which Blue Stompin - here reissued for the first time - is the standout. A joint release with American jazzman Hal Singer, it sees the pair exchange alto and tenor sax solos over backing provided by an expansive collective of musicians. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the jaunty, sun-kissed positivity of 11-minute opener 'Blue Stompin', to the wild electric piano solos and jazz-funk bass of 'Scrap Iron' and the expressive, slow-burn delight of 'Yes Baby'.
