According to the extensive and enlightening accompanying liner notes, few groups did more to modernize Zimbabwean music during the 1970s than the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band. Take One, the first international compilation of the band's work, does a good job in showcasing their then revolutionary approach. Musically, they eschewed the then popular sounds of Afro-rock, cha-cha-cha and Congolese rumba in favour of a vibrant, electrified take on indigenous Zimbabwean music complete with politically charged lyrics delivered in the local Shona language. It's basically what would become known as Chimurenga, and as Take One makes clear, nobody did it better. A genuinely essential musical history lesson that entertains from start to finish.
