Jazzman Don Cherry was well-known for his love of musical experimentation. In the 1960s, he was a free-jazz pioneer who played with Ornette Coleman, but by the 1970s he'd turned his attention to "World Fusion", a style that mixed spiritual and free-jazz with the musical traditions of Africa, the Middle East, South America and India. Om Shanti Om dates from that period and features Cherry and a trio of collaborators mixing handclaps and chants with trumpet, guitar and flute with more exotic instrumentation more often associated with Indian music. It's an unusual, exotic and heady mix that was initially recorded for broadcast on Italian television; this CD marks the first time the music has been commercially available. It's well worth a listen.
