Brazil Primitivo Vol 1: Rhythms Legends & Styles 1899-1963 vinyl

Tired of what they describe as "overseas stereotypes of Brazilian music", the ethnomusicologists and indigenous music diggers at Sound Miracle Recordings have decided to try and put the record straight. The result is "Brazil Primitivo", a new compilation series focusing on archive recordings of traditional Brazilian rhythms and styles from the late early portion of the 20th century. Volume 1 makes for fascinating listening, offering up 34 mostly short and sweet recordings of turn-of-the-20th century accordion-driven Portuguese language folk songs, exotic-sounding traditional dance numbers, crackly field recordings of vocal performances and drum-heavy tribal chant-alongs. For those whose knowledge of Brazilian music extends no further than samba, MPB and Azymuth style jazz-funk, "Brazil Primitivo" is a genuine eye-opener.
